To add Aadhaar or PAN to your EPF records, sign in to the official EPFO member/UAN portal and use its current KYC or profile-update function. Enter the details exactly as they appear in your EPF record and submit them for verification. You can then monitor the document status online and respond to any employer-approval request.
This is not the same as linking PAN with Aadhaar for income-tax purposes. EPFO KYC records a document against your Universal Account Number (UAN); PAN–Aadhaar linking is a separate Income Tax Department process.

What “linking” means in an EPF account
EPFO uses your UAN as the umbrella account for employment-linked provident-fund records. Aadhaar and PAN are KYC documents that can be recorded against that UAN through the member portal. A successful KYC update helps EPFO and your employer verify the identity attached to the account and process services that depend on accurate member information.
There are two different tasks that are often confused:
#1 Best Overall
| Task | Where you do it | Purpose | If information is wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Add Aadhaar or PAN to EPF records | Official EPFO member/UAN portal | Store the document as KYC against your UAN | Correct the EPF profile or resolve employer verification |
| Link PAN with Aadhaar for tax purposes | Income Tax Department service | Connect your tax identity documents under income-tax rules | Follow the Income Tax Department’s correction and linking guidance |
Completing one process does not automatically complete the other. If your goal is an EPF KYC update, start with the EPFO member portal. If your goal is tax compliance, use the Income Tax Department’s service separately.
Before you submit: check the records that EPFO will compare
EPFO’s FAQ says the name on Aadhaar and PAN must match the name in your provident-fund records for KYC to complete successfully. Compare the spelling, order of names, initials, date of birth and other identifying details before you submit. Even a small difference can leave a request pending or rejected.
- Check the name shown in your EPF/UAN profile.
- Check the name printed on your PAN card and the name held in the Income Tax database. EPFO notes that these two PAN names can themselves differ.
- Check the name and demographic details held with Aadhaar.
- Use the same form of the name consistently when a correction is required; do not submit repeated KYC requests hoping a mismatch will disappear.
If your legal name has changed, the appropriate remedy may be an EPF profile or name-change request rather than another KYC submission. Keep any supporting records required by the live portal or your employer.

EPFO confirms that members can update KYC details online through the UAN portal. The service has undergone database and portal changes, so button names and the exact sequence can change. Use the current labels displayed after you sign in rather than relying on an old screenshot or an employer booklet.
- Open the official EPFO member service. Start from EPFO’s official website and choose the member/UAN sign-in service. Avoid links sent by unknown callers or agents.
- Sign in with your UAN credentials. Use the mobile number and authentication method already registered with your UAN. If you cannot sign in, recover access through the portal’s own account-recovery options before attempting KYC.
- Locate the KYC or profile-update area. Look for a menu labelled KYC, Manage KYC, Profile, or a similar current label. The exact post-migration menu path is not fixed in the official guidance, so follow the label currently shown on your account.
- Select the document to add or correct. Choose Aadhaar or PAN, enter the number exactly as it appears on the document, and complete any additional fields the portal requests.
- Review the name and other details. Compare the entry with your EPF profile and with the issuing authority’s record. Correct an obvious typing error before submitting. A portal submission cannot substitute for correcting an underlying name mismatch.
- Submit and complete authentication. Follow the on-screen verification steps. Do not disclose an OTP to an employer, agent, caller or anyone claiming to be EPFO.
- Record the request status. Save the acknowledgement or take a screenshot for your own records. Check the KYC-status area after submission and watch the mobile number registered with your UAN for an EPFO message.
A successful submission may initially show as pending rather than approved. That status means the request is in the verification workflow; it is not proof that the document has already been accepted.
What to do when Aadhaar or PAN KYC is pending
EPFO’s FAQ says members can view KYC status against the updated document and may receive an SMS on the registered mobile. If the status indicates that employer approval is awaited, contact your employer’s HR or administration team and ask them to review the request in the employer workflow.
Employer has not acted
Give the employer the request details shown in your account and ask for a specific review rather than submitting duplicates. If there is no response, escalate within the organisation to the person responsible for EPF administration. Keep copies of your request and correspondence.
There is still no resolution
EPFO’s FAQ directs members to use EPFiGMS when an employer does not respond. Submit the grievance through the official EPFO grievance channel, describe the document, the UAN request date and the status displayed, and attach only the records the official form requests. Check the live portal for the current grievance steps and required fields.

The request is rejected
Read the rejection reason before trying again. Correct the underlying issue—such as a name mismatch, incorrect number or inconsistent demographic data—then submit the appropriate correction or a new KYC request. Repeatedly resubmitting unchanged information usually does not solve a records mismatch.
When the name on Aadhaar, PAN and EPF does not match
The common complaint is: “My name is same in PAN card and Aadhaar card but I am not able to link it with my UAN.” Matching the two identity documents is not enough if the EPF record differs, or if the name on the PAN card differs from the name in the Income Tax database.
All documents appear to match, but the request fails
- Compare the EPF profile character by character, including initials, spaces and surname order.
- Check whether the PAN database record uses a different name from the card itself.
- Confirm that the number entered belongs to you and contains no transcription error.
- Check the portal’s rejection or error message and follow the correction route it identifies.
EPF has an old or incorrect name
Use the portal’s profile or name-correction process, or ask HR/administration which correction workflow applies to your case. EPFO’s FAQ indicates that a name-change request may be needed when records do not align. Do not treat KYC approval as a substitute for correcting the member profile.

Profile corrections are not the same as KYC approval
In an announcement dated 19 January 2025, the Ministry of Labour & Employment said that members whose UAN had already been validated through Aadhaar could self-update certain profile fields without uploading documents. The relaxation is conditional, not universal. Some cases—including certain UANs obtained before 1 October 2017—still require employer certification.
That announcement concerns specified demographic or profile corrections. It should not be read as a promise that every Aadhaar or PAN KYC request will be self-approved. Whether you can change a field directly depends on Aadhaar validation, the field being changed and the facts of your UAN. Use the option presented in your account and provide employer certification when the portal requires it.
What the 2025 announcement reported
The figures below describe the EPFO situation cited in that announcement, not a current approval rate or guarantee for an individual request:

| Figure | Context and period |
|---|---|
| 8 lakh requests | Profile-correction requests handled by EPFO in financial year 2024–25 |
| Almost 45% | Share of those correction requests that could be self-approved, according to EPFO data quoted in the announcement |
| Nearly 28 days | Average delay the change was expected to eliminate for eligible self-approved corrections |
| Approximately another 50% | Cases without full e-KYC that could be approved at employer level, according to the announcement |
| Around 3.9 lakh members | Members expected to benefit from the simplification |
| Around 27% | Share of grievances related to member-profile or KYC issues in the announcement’s cited context |
These historical figures explain why EPFO introduced a simpler route for eligible corrections, but they do not establish how long your particular KYC request will take. The status shown in your account and any employer response remain the practical indicators for your case.

How to check whether the update worked
- Sign in to the UAN member portal after submitting the document.
- Open the current KYC or profile-status view.
- Look specifically at the status beside Aadhaar or PAN, rather than assuming that a submission receipt means approval.
- Check the registered mobile for an EPFO SMS and compare it with the portal status.
- If the status remains pending, follow the employer and EPFiGMS escalation steps described above.
Portal labels and status wording can change after service updates. Use the current status displayed for your account as the controlling information.
Common mistakes and practical fixes
Using the tax-linking service for an EPF update
PAN–Aadhaar linking on the Income Tax Department’s service does not add PAN to your UAN. Complete the EPFO KYC request separately.
Submitting a second request without fixing the first error
Duplicate submissions do not correct a mismatch. Read the status or rejection reason, correct the EPF profile or source record, and then submit the appropriate request.
Relying on an old menu path
Older EPFO employer material describes a KYC process, but its navigation labels may not match the current member portal. Use the live portal’s KYC or profile area instead of treating legacy instructions as guaranteed navigation.
Assuming every profile field is self-service
The 2025 simplification applies only to eligible Aadhaar-validated UANs and specified fields. A case can still require employer certification or another correction workflow.
Ignoring the registered mobile
EPFO says an SMS may be sent after a KYC update. Keep access to the registered number and update it through the official account process if it is no longer yours.
Entering details from memory
Have the original PAN and Aadhaar records available while completing the form. Transposed digits, omitted middle names and an old surname can create a failed or delayed request even when the documents themselves are valid.

Assuming one approved document approves the other
Aadhaar and PAN are separate KYC entries. Approval of one does not mean the other has been added to your UAN. Check each document’s individual status.

Protect your Aadhaar, PAN and UAN credentials
Use only official EPFO services for sign-in, KYC and grievances. Never send an OTP, password, Aadhaar number, PAN, bank details or payment to an intermediary who contacts you unexpectedly.
The EPFO Member Passbook portal carries this warning: “Please never respond to any call for sharing any personal details like Aadhaar, PAN, Bank details, OTP or request for any payment. EPFO never calls members/pensioners to deposit any amount.” Treat an unsolicited demand for money or credentials as a fraud warning, end the call and use the official portal instead.
- Type the official EPFO address yourself or use a trusted bookmark.
- Check that the sign-in page is secure before entering credentials.
- Do not allow another person to submit KYC using your OTP.
- Keep acknowledgement numbers and screenshots privately; do not post them publicly.
Decision guide: which process should you use?
- You want Aadhaar or PAN recorded against your UAN: use the EPFO member portal’s KYC function.
- You want to satisfy PAN–Aadhaar tax-linking requirements: use the Income Tax Department’s service.
- Your EPF name is wrong: start a profile or name correction, then update KYC when the records align.
- Your KYC is waiting for employer action: contact HR or administration, escalate internally, and use EPFiGMS if there is no response.
- You received a call asking for an OTP or payment: do not respond; EPFO says it does not call members or pensioners to collect deposits.
What happens after you submit a correction?
The next step depends on the type of change and the status of your UAN. A straightforward KYC entry may move through the portal’s verification workflow, while a demographic correction may be eligible for self-update only when your UAN has been Aadhaar-validated and the field falls within the permitted category. Other records may be routed to your employer for certification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not assume that a pending entry indicates a technical failure or that a short delay means rejection. First read the status and any message attached to the request. If the portal asks for employer action, give HR or the EPF administrator the exact request details. If it identifies a mismatch, fix the record that is actually wrong instead of repeatedly uploading the same document.

Is linking PAN with Aadhaar the same as linking PAN with UAN?
No. PAN–Aadhaar linking is an Income Tax Department process for connecting tax-identity records. Adding PAN to your EPF account is an EPFO KYC update against your UAN. Use the service belonging to the outcome you need; one does not automatically complete the other.
Why is my Aadhaar or PAN KYC still pending?
A request can remain pending while verification or employer approval is outstanding. Check the document-specific status and your registered-mobile messages, then contact HR or administration if employer action is shown. Escalate inside the organisation and use EPFiGMS if there is no response.
My name is the same on PAN and Aadhaar, so why did the UAN update fail?
EPFO compares those documents with the name and demographic data in your PF record. The PAN card name can also differ from the name in the Income Tax database. Compare every record, including initials, spaces and surname order, and start the relevant profile or name-correction process if the EPF record is wrong.
How do I know whether the update was approved?
Sign in to the UAN portal and check the status beside the Aadhaar or PAN entry. A submission acknowledgement is not the same as approval. EPFO may also send an SMS to your registered mobile, so compare that message with the portal status.

Can every Aadhaar-validated member correct profile details without the employer?
No. The 19 January 2025 simplification covers specified fields and eligible Aadhaar-validated UANs. Certain UANs obtained before 1 October 2017 and other cases may still require employer certification. Follow the option and document requirements displayed for your account.
Should I use an agent to submit Aadhaar or PAN KYC?
There is no need to hand your credentials to an intermediary. Use the official EPFO portal yourself, keep your OTP private and ignore anyone asking for payment or personal details by phone. EPFO’s Member Passbook warning says it does not call members or pensioners to collect deposits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is linking PAN with Aadhaar the same as linking PAN with UAN?
No. PAN–Aadhaar linking is handled by the Income Tax Department, while adding PAN to an EPF account is an EPFO KYC update against your UAN. Complete the relevant process separately.
Why is my Aadhaar or PAN KYC pending?
The request may still be in verification or awaiting employer approval. Check the document-specific status and registered-mobile message, contact HR or administration, and use EPFiGMS if the employer does not respond.
What should I do if my name does not match?
Compare the EPF profile with Aadhaar, the PAN card and the Income Tax database, including initials, spaces and surname order. Correct the underlying profile or name record before submitting KYC again.
How do I know whether the update was approved?
Return to the UAN portal and check the status beside the Aadhaar or PAN entry. A submission receipt only confirms that you sent a request; it does not prove approval. An SMS may also be sent to your registered mobile.
Can I self-update every profile field after Aadhaar validation?
No. The 19 January 2025 simplification applies to specified fields and eligible Aadhaar-validated UANs. Some cases still require employer certification.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

No. Keep your OTP, password, Aadhaar, PAN and bank details private. EPFO warns that it does not call members or pensioners to request personal details or deposits.
The Bottom Line
Use the official EPFO member/UAN portal to add Aadhaar or PAN as KYC against your EPF account. Before submitting, make the name and identifying details consistent with your PF record, Aadhaar and PAN records. Check each document’s status after submission and involve HR or administration when employer approval is pending.
Keep EPF KYC separate from PAN–Aadhaar tax linking. If a mismatch or stalled request remains unresolved, use the applicable profile-correction route and EPFiGMS. Never share an OTP or pay someone who claims to represent EPFO.
