To remove a saved card, open that card in Your Payments, choose Remove from wallet, and follow Amazon’s prompts. A card change in the wallet does not automatically change the payment method on open orders, and Amazon may require you to replace a default card or update subscriptions and pending transactions before removal.
The labels below reflect the official Amazon, Amazon Pay and American Express instructions available for U.S. accounts. Amazon and American Express can change screen names, and regional or mobile-app layouts may differ. If a label is missing in an app, use Amazon’s website or the American Express website and look for the equivalent account, card-management or wallet control.

Choose where to start
There are two supported ways to link an American Express card. The normal Amazon route is the most direct when you are already signed in to Amazon: add the card under Your Payments. American Express also documents a route that begins in the Amex app or on the Amex website and then sends you to Amazon to finish authorization.

You do not need to apply for another card to complete either task. The procedure concerns a card you already hold and the payment methods saved to your Amazon account.

Before you link the card
- Have the American Express card information available if you are adding it directly on Amazon.
- Sign in to the Amazon account that should store the card. A card added to a different Amazon account will not appear in the account you intended to use.
- If you are starting in the Amex app or website, identify the specific card you want to connect before opening the wallet or merchant controls.
- Expect the exact wording to vary by device, app release and region. The official Amex route uses labels such as Card Management, Manage This Card on Devices and Sites, and Add to Wallets & Merchants; Amazon’s website uses Your Payments.
Link an American Express card from Amazon
Use Your Payments
Amazon’s account settings are the general-purpose place to add, edit or remove a saved payment method. Follow this sequence on Amazon’s website:
- Sign in to the Amazon account where you want the card saved.
- Open Your Account.
- Select Your Payments.
- Choose Add a payment method.
- Follow the prompts to enter the American Express card information and any requested billing details.
- Submit the form and wait for Amazon to return you to the payment-method list.
The card should then be listed among the payment methods available for future Amazon purchases. If Amazon asks you to select a billing address, use the address associated with the card so the payment method can be processed correctly.
Amazon’s account-help page is the controlling reference for the current website flow: Manage Payment Methods. Buttons can move as Amazon changes its account design, but the relevant destination remains the payment-method area.
Add it during checkout
Amazon also allows a customer to add a card while placing an order. At the payment step of checkout, choose the option to add a payment method, enter the American Express details, and continue with the order. Amazon says a card added during checkout can be saved for later use. This is useful when you are already buying something and do not want to leave checkout to open Your Payments.
Adding a card during checkout does not change the payment method on other orders that are already open. Those transactions must be handled individually if their payment method needs to change.

Link through the American Express app or website
American Express provides an alternative flow that starts with the card issuer. It is useful when you want to select a particular Amex card from your account and connect it to Amazon’s wallet and merchant controls. The names of controls can change, so treat the labels below as the documented path rather than a guarantee that every device displays identical wording.
American Express app path
- Open the American Express app and sign in.
- Go to Account.
- Open Account Services.
- Select Card Management.
- Choose Manage This Card on Devices and Sites.
- Select Add to Wallets & Merchants.
- Choose Amazon, then select the American Express card you want to link.
- Review the terms shown on screen and accept them if you agree.
- Sign in to Amazon when prompted.
- Continue through the remaining confirmation screens to finish the connection.
American Express describes this sequence on its U.S. card-linking page: Link Amex Card to Amazon. If an app update uses a different label, look for the card’s device, site, wallet or merchant-management area rather than assuming the card cannot be linked.

American Express website path
- Sign in to your American Express account on the website.
- Open Account Services, then Card Management.
- Open the controls for managing the card on devices and sites.
- Choose the wallets and merchants option, then select Amazon.
- Select the card to connect and review the terms.
- Accept the displayed terms, sign in to Amazon and continue until the linking process reports completion.
The website route and the app route serve the same purpose: they identify the card at American Express, obtain your consent to the displayed terms, and then use an Amazon sign-in to complete the link. You can also add the card directly from Amazon instead; the two routes are alternatives, not two required stages.
Check that the card was added
After either route finishes, open Amazon’s Your Account → Your Payments page and look for the American Express card in the saved payment-method list. Confirm the card ending digits and billing information before using it for a new order.
If the card does not appear, verify that you completed the final confirmation screen and that you signed in to the intended Amazon account. If you started in the Amex app, return to Amazon through the link provided there rather than opening a separate Amazon account in another browser tab. If the labels or screens do not match, use the Amazon website’s Your Payments page, because the official material does not establish one universal set of mobile-app labels for every version and locale.

Remove an American Express card from Amazon
Standard removal steps
- Sign in to Amazon.
- Open Your Account.
- Select Your Payments.
- Find the saved American Express card and select it to open its details.
- Choose Remove from wallet.
- Follow the on-screen confirmation instructions.
Removal deletes the saved payment method from the Amazon wallet. The official Amazon instructions are available at Manage Payment Methods. Once the card is removed, it will not be offered as a saved method for a new checkout unless you add it again.
If Amazon will not let you remove it
Amazon Pay says deletion can be blocked when the payment method is the account’s default or is connected to active subscriptions or pending orders. The block is a transaction or account relationship issue, not necessarily a problem with the American Express card itself.
- Add another valid payment method if the Amex card is the only one available.
- Make the replacement method the default payment method.
- Review active subscriptions and memberships that use the card, and change their payment method where necessary.
- Review pending orders and any other transaction linked to the card. Update each affected transaction according to its own options.
- Return to Your Payments, open the American Express card and select Remove from wallet again.
Amazon Pay’s deletion guidance explains these constraints and the related account checks: Deleting payment methods. Amazon Pay also recommends reviewing orders, memberships or subscriptions, and Amazon Pay activity when a payment method remains connected.
Replace an expired card or a card with a new number
Changed card number or expired card
When American Express issues a replacement with a different card number, or the saved card has expired, Amazon Pay’s guidance is to remove the old payment method and add the new one. Use the removal procedure above, then return to Your Payments → Add a payment method and enter the replacement card.
The relevant Amazon Pay instructions are in Editing payment methods. Do not assume that changing an expiration date on the old entry will convert it into a new card number; a changed number requires the remove-and-add process described by Amazon Pay.

Details that can be edited
For editable information such as the cardholder name, expiration date or billing address, select the saved payment method and choose the edit option shown for that field. Save the change, then check the payment-method entry again.
Editing the saved entry affects the wallet record. It does not rewrite the payment method on an open order that has already been placed. Handle an affected order separately.

Open Amazon orders
Amazon’s account-help guidance states that updating a payment method in Your Payments does not change the payment method on open orders. If an order has not yet completed and needs a different card, open that order and use the order-specific payment option Amazon provides. A wallet edit alone is not a substitute for updating the transaction.
Subscriptions and memberships
A saved card may be attached to recurring charges or memberships. Before removing it, identify those services and assign another payment method where the service permits it. If Amazon blocks removal, this relationship is one of the conditions Amazon Pay says to check.
Amazon Pay transactions
Amazon says changes made to payment methods on its website apply to both Amazon and Amazon Pay. That means a card removed or edited in the account-level payment settings can affect its availability for Amazon Pay transactions, but an existing transaction still needs to be managed according to its own status and options.

Troubleshoot the most common problems
The card is not listed after linking
- Check that you used the intended Amazon account and completed the final confirmation screen.
- Open Your Payments directly on Amazon’s website and look for the card there.
- If you began in the Amex app, repeat the documented path through Card Management and Add to Wallets & Merchants, then sign in to Amazon when prompted.
- Confirm that the card number and requested billing details were entered without errors.
The Remove from wallet option is missing or fails
- Check whether the card is the default payment method and assign another default first.
- Review subscriptions, memberships, pending orders and Amazon Pay activity for links to the card.
- Update each linked transaction or recurring payment, then retry removal.
The new card works for future purchases but an existing order still shows Amex
This is expected when only the wallet entry was changed. Amazon says open orders retain their existing payment method until you update those orders separately. Open the affected order and follow its payment-update controls.
The card number changed but editing does not solve the issue
Use Amazon Pay’s remove-and-add instruction for changed numbers: remove the old entry, then add the replacement under Your Payments. Editing is intended for details such as name, expiration date or billing address, not for converting one card number into another.

The app labels do not match
Interface wording can change by app version and locale. The official material does not establish one universal mobile sequence. Use the website versions of Amazon or American Express, where the documented account and card-management destinations are easier to locate, and look for equivalent wallet or merchant controls if a label has moved.

Final checklist
- Use the intended Amazon account before adding or removing the card.
- For direct setup, go to Your Account → Your Payments → Add a payment method.
- For the issuer-originated setup, use the Amex card-management and wallets/merchants controls, then complete the Amazon sign-in.
- To delete the saved entry, open the card and select Remove from wallet.
- If deletion is blocked, replace the default method and update subscriptions, memberships, pending orders or Amazon Pay activity connected to the card.
- For a new card number, remove the old entry and add the replacement; for ordinary details, use edit.
- Check open orders separately because wallet changes do not automatically update them.
