The safest approach is to avoid a live connection when you can. If an AI feature needs financial data, connect only the specific account or source required for the task, use a provider login with the narrowest practical access, read the authorization screen, and disconnect the account when you are finished. Then separately review chats, uploaded files, and memories, because revoking a connection does not necessarily delete information the AI service has already retained.
Start with the narrowest possible connection
Before an AI app asks for access to a bank, brokerage, card, loan, or credit-report account, decide whether it needs live data at all. A manually prepared summary—such as monthly spending totals, a debt balance, or a list of recurring bills—may be enough for budgeting or planning. Sharing a limited summary avoids creating an ongoing connection, although each service handles manually entered information under its own data controls.

If live access is genuinely useful, connect only what the task requires. A budgeting question may need one checking account, not every account at the same institution. A credit question may require a credit-report connection but not transaction feeds. Availability of individual account choices, data categories, and permission settings varies by service, app, account type, region, plan, and workspace.
- Choose the provider account that already has access to the needed information, rather than a broad administrator or household login when a narrower login is available.
- Read the provider’s authorization screen before approving it. Check the listed accounts, data categories, date range, and whether the request includes actions as well as reading.
- Reject requests that are unfamiliar, broader than the task, or impossible to explain.
- Set a reminder to remove the connection when the task or project ends.
Two controls are involved—and they do different jobs
Financial-data protection is often misunderstood because an AI product can expose two separate sets of controls.

Provider authorization controls the underlying access
When you sign in through a bank, data aggregator, credit bureau, or other provider, that provider’s authorization determines which accounts and categories can be made available. Selecting an account, approving a scope, or allowing a data feed creates the underlying connection. If the authorization screen offers account-level choices, use them. If it offers only an institution-wide choice, assume the connection may cover everything listed there unless the screen says otherwise.
AI-app permissions control use and prompts
Inside the AI service, app-permission settings may determine whether the service asks before reading connected information, performing an action, or using data in a particular feature. They can help you control when the app uses an already authorized connection. They do not grant the app new provider access, and they do not shrink the access you approved at the provider. OpenAI’s Help Center states this directly: “App permissions do not grant an app new access.”
For that reason, changing an AI app’s prompt or permission setting is not a substitute for narrowing the bank-side or provider-side authorization. Review both layers.

The labels differ among AI services, but the sequence below is a reliable way to minimize exposure.
- Define the task. Write down the exact answer you need and the minimum data needed to produce it. “Categorize transactions from one checking account for March” is narrower than “analyze my finances.”
- Try a no-connection method first. If totals or a redacted transaction sample will answer the question, use that instead of a live feed.
- Open the AI feature’s connection flow. Use the service’s account or connected-apps settings, not an unsolicited link in an email or message. Confirm that you are in the intended personal or work account.
- Select the least-privileged provider login. If you have separate personal, business, family, or read-only identities, choose the one that can see only the required source. Do not use an administrator identity merely because it is convenient.
- Inspect every authorization screen. Record which institution, individual accounts, data types, historical period, and action permissions are listed. Look for checkboxes, expandable details, and links to the provider’s privacy terms.
- Decline or cancel if the scope is unclear. A useful AI feature is not a reason to accept an authorization you cannot describe in plain language.
- Complete the task and limit reuse. Turn off optional app permissions or prompts if the service provides those controls, while remembering that this does not alter the provider authorization.
- Disconnect when the need ends. Remove the individual account if only one source is no longer needed, or disconnect the whole feature if no connected financial data should remain available.
- Review retained information separately. Check conversation history, archived chats, uploaded files, saved projects, and memories for financial details and delete anything you no longer want stored.
No connection versus selective connection
| Approach | Financial data exposed | AI usefulness | Control points | What remains afterward |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Do not connect an account | No live account feed is created. You may still share information manually. | Works for questions that can be answered from a limited summary or redacted sample. | You control exactly what you type or upload; there is no provider authorization to revoke. | Anything manually entered or uploaded remains subject to the AI service’s chat, file, and memory controls. |
| Connect selectively | Only the accounts and categories shown on the provider authorization screen, subject to that service’s design. | Enables current balances, transactions, or other connected-data features. | Provider authorization sets the underlying scope; AI-app settings govern use and prompts. | Disconnecting stops future access through that connection, but existing chats, files, and memories may require separate deletion. |
Do not assume a connection is read-only, limited to recent transactions, or restricted to one account unless the current authorization screen explicitly says so. A permission label that sounds narrow may still cover more data than the task requires.
Manage connected accounts and workspace access
Remove one account when possible
If an AI service lets you manage connected accounts individually, remove the account that is no longer needed instead of disconnecting every source. This is useful when you want to keep a separate connection for an active task but eliminate an old checking, card, or credit-report feed.

Disconnect the feature when no financial source is needed
A feature-level disconnect is appropriate when you no longer want the AI service to access any connected financial account. OpenAI’s Help Center describes the principle as: “Disconnecting stops future access through that account.” Stopping future access does not necessarily erase information already copied into conversations, files, or memories.

Check managed workspaces
In a workplace, school, or family-managed environment, an administrator may control connected apps or disable a connection for everyone. If you cannot remove an account yourself, ask the workspace administrator to disable it. A personal setting may not override an organization-managed connection.
Also check for duplicate connections. Disconnecting one account does not necessarily remove other accounts connected to the same AI service, and disabling a workspace connection may not affect a personal connection you authorized separately.
Revocation is not the same as deletion
Think of access and retention as separate questions:
- Can the service obtain new data? Disconnecting or revoking the provider authorization should stop future access through that connection, subject to the service’s documented behavior.
- What data did the service already receive? Previously synchronized information may remain in chats, logs, files, projects, or memories.
- Where else was the data shared? An aggregator or provider may have separate connections to other apps. Removing one app’s connection does not automatically remove those other authorizations.
After revocation, search your conversation history for account numbers, balances, transaction exports, and credit information. Inspect saved files and memory features separately. Use the service’s documented deletion controls rather than assuming that disconnecting an account purges every copy.

| Documented control or fact | What it means for a user |
|---|---|
| Account connections can be managed individually | Remove a particular bank or other financial account when that source is no longer needed, rather than treating all connected sources as one undifferentiated feed. |
| Finances can be disconnected | Use the feature-level disconnect when no connected financial data should remain available through Finances. |
| U.S. financial-account connections use Plaid | The available institutions and account choices depend on the connection flow and can change; inspect the current authorization screen. |
| Credit-report connections use Experian | Credit data is a separate source from bank-account transaction data. Review and remove it separately if the interface presents separate controls. |
| Deletion after disconnection | OpenAI states that, after disconnecting Finances or removing an account, synced account data is deleted from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days, and data associated with the ChatGPT connection is deleted from Plaid within 30 days under Plaid policies. |
| Other Plaid connections | Disconnecting ChatGPT Finances does not affect separate Plaid connections you authorized elsewhere. |
The 30-day period is a statement about this documented service behavior, not a universal deadline for AI apps. It also does not mean that every copy in a conversation, uploaded file, export, backup, or separately connected service disappears automatically. Follow the service’s instructions for deleting those records.
OpenAI’s documentation relays Plaid’s description that it helps people share financial data with more than 9,000 apps and services and maintains connections to more than 12,000 financial institutions. The page does not state a year or methodology for those figures, so they should not be treated as a current independently verified count. The practical lesson is to check for other authorizations at the aggregator itself.
How to stop an AI app from seeing bank transactions
If the app is already connected, use this order:
- Open the AI service’s connected-apps, account, or Finances settings.
- Identify every bank, card, brokerage, or credit-report source listed.
- Remove the individual bank account that contains the transactions you no longer want available, if account-level removal is offered.
- If no financial connection should remain, use the feature-level disconnect.
- Sign in to the underlying provider or aggregator and verify that the authorization is no longer active. Remove a duplicate authorization there if one exists.
- Ask a workspace administrator to disable a managed connection you cannot control yourself.
- Search chats, files, and memories for transaction details and delete those records through their own controls.
Do not rely on uninstalling the mobile app, signing out, or changing a notification setting. Those actions may change local access or prompts without revoking the provider authorization.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
Approving an institution-wide connection for a one-account task
Problem: You selected a login that exposes several accounts because the connection flow did not make the distinction obvious.
Fix: Return to the provider authorization screen and look for individual-account selection. If it is unavailable, treat the broader scope as a limitation and use a manual summary or a narrower provider login instead.
Assuming an app-permission toggle reduces bank access
Problem: You turned off a prompt or permission inside the AI service but left the provider authorization active.

Fix: Revoke or disconnect the underlying account. Use the app-level setting only to govern when the service uses the connection.
Disconnecting one source and forgetting another
Problem: A separate card, credit-report, or workspace connection remains active.
Fix: Review the connected-account list source by source, then check the aggregator or provider for authorizations made outside the AI service.
Expecting revocation to erase a conversation
Problem: You disconnect the account but transaction details remain searchable in a chat or saved file.
Fix: Delete the relevant conversation, file, project item, or memory using the AI service’s data controls. Confirm whether archived items and backups have separate retention rules.
Using a managed account without checking the administrator
Problem: An organization controls the connection, so personal settings do not remove it.

Fix: Contact the workspace administrator and request disablement. Avoid adding additional financial data to that workspace until its retention and access rules are clear.
Assuming every service offers the same controls
Problem: You expect account-level removal, read-only access, a fixed deletion period, or a particular data category because another app offered it.
Fix: Read the current authorization and help documentation for the specific service. Availability and labels can change by region, plan, account, and product version.
Regulatory context: what the CFPB rule does—and does not—answer
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describes a final rule implementing personal financial data rights. In the agency’s summary, covered financial providers must make a consumer’s data available on request to the consumer and authorized third parties, and third parties accessing that data have obligations that include privacy protections.
This context explains why a consumer may be able to authorize a data connection, but it does not establish a universal switch that blocks every AI service from every bank account. The summary also does not, by itself, resolve current litigation, effective dates, implementation schedules, or every institution’s controls. Check the CFPB’s current rule page and your provider’s present settings before relying on a regulatory deadline or assuming a particular opt-out exists.
A practical review checklist
- Can the task be completed with a manually prepared, limited summary?
- Which exact account, data category, and date range are necessary?
- Does the provider authorization screen list more accounts or permissions than the task needs?
- Am I using the narrowest personal, business, family, or workspace login available?
- Which AI-app settings control prompts or use, and which provider setting controls the underlying access?
- Have I removed individual accounts that are no longer needed?
- If no connected data is needed, have I disconnected the entire feature?
- Could a separate aggregator, personal account, or workspace connection still be active?
- Have I reviewed chats, archived conversations, uploaded files, projects, and memories for retained financial data?
- For a managed workspace, have I confirmed the administrator’s retention and disablement process?
The decision rule
Use no live connection when a limited summary will do. When live data adds real value, authorize only the specific source needed, verify the scope on the provider’s screen, and treat app permissions as a use-and-prompt control rather than a data-scope control. Disconnect promptly when the task ends, then handle retained chats, files, and memories separately. That sequence limits both the amount of financial data exposed and the length of time the connection remains available.
