If one company’s shares have grown to dominate your portfolio, your results depend unusually heavily on that company. You can reduce the concentration by directing new money to other holdings, changing ongoing contribution allocations, selling part of the position and reinvesting the proceeds, or combining those approaches. The suitable mix depends on your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, taxes and trading costs; U.S. regulators do not prescribe one universal percentage or rebalancing schedule.

This guide explains how to measure the exposure, choose a target allocation, compare the available methods and review the decision without treating general education as an individualized investment or tax recommendation.

Why one stock creates a different kind of risk

A broad stock-market investment spreads ownership across many companies. Owning one company’s stock concentrates your outcome in that company’s business and share-price behavior. Investor.gov explains that management decisions, product strength, customer demand, economic conditions, labor and supply-chain costs, and changing investor preferences can all affect an individual company’s price: Introduction to Investing: Asset Allocation and Diversification.

That company-specific exposure is separate from the general ups and downs of the market. A diversified portfolio can still fall during a market decline, but a concentrated holding can suffer an additional shock if the company misses expectations, loses a major customer, faces a lawsuit, changes leadership or encounters an industry problem. A rising share price can make the concentration larger even when you have not bought additional shares.

Employer shares can create the same dependence. Count stock held in a brokerage account, retirement plan or other account, and consider other exposure to the same company when it is relevant to your financial situation. The objective is to understand how much of your overall outcome is tied to one issuer, not just how many shares sit in one account.

What diversification does—and does not—promise

Investor.gov defines diversification as spreading money among different investments and asset types. Diversification can reduce reliance on any single holding, but it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses. A mutual fund or exchange-traded fund may still be narrowly focused on one industry, one country or a small group of companies, so its name alone does not prove that it is broadly diversified. Review the fund’s holdings and stated strategy before counting it as a replacement for a concentrated position. See Asset Allocation and Diversification.

There is no official single-stock percentage that applies to every investor. An appropriate allocation reflects risk tolerance and time horizon, along with goals and overall financial circumstances. A percentage that is tolerable for someone with a long horizon, substantial diversified assets and high capacity for loss may be unsuitable for someone who needs the money soon or whose job and benefits already depend on the same employer.

Start with an exposure inventory

Before choosing a remedy, make a complete list of the assets and cash flows that connect your finances to the company. This prevents a sale in one account from giving a misleading picture of your actual concentration.

  • List the current market value of the company shares in each taxable, retirement and other investment account.
  • Record the value of the rest of the portfolio and identify whether those holdings are broad, narrowly focused or tied to the same company or industry.
  • Include additional company exposure that matters to your plan, such as employer shares held elsewhere or compensation that will be paid in company stock.
  • Note upcoming cash needs, planned contributions and the account types in which a sale would occur.

To estimate the position’s share of the portfolio, divide the current value of all shares in that company by the current value of all investments you are evaluating, then express the result as a percentage. Use current values and repeat the calculation after market movements or transactions. The number describes your present exposure; it does not by itself tell you what the target should be.

Choose a target that fits your plan

A target allocation is a range or percentage you are willing to maintain for the company and for the other asset categories in your plan. Set it by asking:

  • What is the money for? A near-term purchase or emergency reserve generally leaves less room for a large volatile position than a distant goal.
  • How long can the money remain invested? A longer horizon may provide more time to recover from a fall, but it does not remove company-specific risk.
  • How much loss could you withstand financially and emotionally? Consider both your ability to absorb a loss and your willingness to stay invested through one.
  • What else already depends on the company? Employment, bonuses or other benefits can make a stock position more consequential than its portfolio percentage suggests.
  • What are the tax and trading consequences? A target that looks attractive on paper may be expensive or impractical to reach in one transaction.

Do not treat a rule of thumb from another investor, website or social-media post as an official limit. Investor.gov’s guidance describes allocation as personal and does not establish a universal single-company cap. Document why your target fits your goals, then use that target consistently when deciding where new money goes and when a sale is considered.

Compare the three main ways to reduce concentration

The SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing describes several general rebalancing methods. They differ mainly in how quickly they reduce the existing position and whether they create a sale.

Approach How it reduces concentration Key trade-offs When it may fit
Direct new contributions to other holdings New money increases the value of the rest of the portfolio while the concentrated shares remain in place. Usually gradual; the dollar value of the original holding is not reduced. It requires available contributions. An investor who wants to avoid an immediate sale and has regular money to invest elsewhere.
Change ongoing contribution allocations Future deposits are directed toward underweight categories rather than the already oversized position. Progress depends on the size and frequency of contributions and on having a suitable target allocation. An employee or saver who can change payroll, automatic-investment or retirement-plan elections.
Sell part of the concentrated holding and rebalance The position is reduced directly and sale proceeds are invested in underweight holdings. A sale can create transaction fees and tax consequences; the personal effect depends on account type, basis, holding period and current rules. An investor who needs a faster reduction or does not have enough new cash flow to dilute the position.

No row is best for everyone. Compare speed, tax consequences, fees, available cash flow and fit with your stated target before acting. A staged combination—for example, redirecting future contributions while selling portions over time—can also be evaluated, but it still requires a plan for taxes, costs and review dates.

Direct new money to underweight holdings

If you are adding money regularly, send it to the asset categories or diversified holdings that are below your target rather than buying more of the concentrated stock. This can lower the stock’s percentage of the portfolio as the other holdings grow. It does not protect you from a decline in the existing shares during the transition, and the process may take a long time if contributions are small relative to the position.

Before using this method, confirm that the destination investments actually provide the breadth you want. A narrowly focused fund may leave you exposed to a different concentration rather than solving the original problem.

Change automatic or payroll contribution elections

Many investors can change the destination of future deposits without selling current holdings. Review the contribution or investment-election screen for each account and direct new money toward the categories that are below your target. Check the resulting allocation after the change; an election may affect only future contributions, not balances already held.

This route depends on having continuing deposits. If contributions stop, or if the concentrated stock continues to appreciate much faster than the rest of the portfolio, the position may remain larger than intended.

Sell part of the position and reinvest

A partial sale reduces the company’s share of the portfolio immediately. The proceeds can be directed to the underweight holdings in your allocation plan. You do not have to choose between selling everything and doing nothing; a partial transaction can be sized to move toward a target while preserving some exposure if that is consistent with your plan.

Use the account’s order-entry details carefully, including the number of shares, order type, settlement information and the destination for proceeds. Confirm that the replacement investments are the ones in your written allocation plan, rather than a new narrow bet that merely changes the issuer.

Account for taxes and transaction costs before a sale

The SEC guide advises considering transaction fees and tax consequences before rebalancing. The impact cannot be determined from the portfolio percentage alone. Relevant facts can include whether the shares are in a taxable or tax-advantaged account, your cost basis, holding period, other gains or losses, the type of compensation involved and the tax rules in force when you transact.

  • Identify the lots or basis information your account provides before placing an order.
  • Ask whether the trade will generate a reportable gain or loss and when it will be reported.
  • Review commissions, spreads, account fees or other trading charges that apply to the transaction.
  • Consider whether selling in stages changes the timing of gains, losses or cash needs.
  • For a decision with material tax consequences, consult a qualified tax adviser; for allocation design, a financial professional may help you compare alternatives.

Do not assume that a tax result described for one account or taxpayer applies to you. Current federal, state and local rules, as well as account-specific terms, can change the outcome.

A practical decision process

  1. Measure the current position. Add the market value of the company shares across relevant accounts and compare it with the portfolio value you are managing. Record other meaningful exposure to the same company.
  2. Write down the objective. State whether you are trying to reach a target range, reduce dependence before a spending need, or stop adding to an already large position. A clear objective prevents an impulsive trade after a one-day price move.
  3. Set an allocation consistent with your circumstances. Consider goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, financial situation and existing employment or benefit exposure. Treat the result as a personal planning choice, not a regulatory threshold.
  4. Map the underweight destinations. Identify the diversified holdings or asset categories that would receive new money or sale proceeds. Check their actual holdings and strategy so you know what risks you are adding.
  5. Compare contribution changes with a partial sale. Estimate how long new contributions would take to change the percentage and compare that with the speed you need. Include the possibility that the stock rises or falls during the transition.
  6. Estimate costs before execution. Review basis, holding period, account type, transaction charges and tax questions. Obtain professional advice when the consequences are material or unclear.
  7. Execute the chosen method deliberately. Change contribution instructions, place the planned partial sale, invest proceeds or combine the actions according to your written plan. Keep records of confirmations and updated balances.
  8. Check the result against the target. Recalculate the company’s share after trades settle and note any remaining gap. If the result differs from the plan, determine whether the difference came from market movement, an omitted exposure or an execution issue.

Decide how often to review and rebalance

Investor.gov describes two common frameworks: review on a regular calendar, such as every six or 12 months, or rebalance when an allocation moves beyond a preset percentage from its target. These are examples rather than universal rules. The SEC guide notes that rebalancing generally works best when it is done relatively infrequently, rather than in response to every market fluctuation.

Choose a review approach you can follow consistently. At each review, revisit the factors that can make the target obsolete:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  • Your investment time horizon or the date of a planned withdrawal.
  • Your willingness or ability to tolerate losses.
  • Your income, employment, benefits or other financial circumstances.
  • Your goals, emergency-reserve needs or major spending plans.
  • Changes in the company exposure held outside the account you are reviewing.

A preset trigger can create discipline, but it does not eliminate the need to consider taxes, fees and current circumstances. A calendar review can be easier to administer, while a threshold review may respond more directly to a large market move. Either way, write down the trigger and the action you will evaluate instead of making a decision only when emotions are high.

Do not replace one concentration with a riskier product

A single-stock exchange-traded fund is not a diversified substitute for owning a broad group of companies. SEC staff warns that leveraged and inverse single-stock ETFs track one stock, eliminate diversification benefits and may have greater volatility and risk than the stock itself: Statement on Single-Stock Levered and/or Inverse ETFs.

Using leverage, an inverse strategy or a complex derivative to try to offset a concentrated position can introduce path-dependent results, financing costs and additional risks that are different from simply reducing the holding. Read the product’s prospectus and structure carefully; do not count a single-stock product as diversification merely because it trades on an exchange.

Illustrative ways the choices can play out

Steady contributions, no urgent cash need

An investor whose position is large but who has regular contributions and no near-term need for the money might stop adding to the stock and direct new deposits to broad, underweight holdings. The position’s percentage can decline as those holdings accumulate, but the investor remains exposed to a fall in the original shares while the adjustment is underway.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large position, limited future contributions

If contributions are small or expected to stop, dilution may be too slow to meet the investor’s objective. A partial sale can reduce the position directly, after checking basis, taxes, fees and the account’s trading rules. The investor can then direct future deposits to the underweight holdings.

Employer dependence as well as portfolio dependence

Someone whose wages, bonus or benefits are tied to the same company may face a larger overall financial impact than the brokerage percentage shows. In that case, the allocation discussion should include the employment exposure and the household’s goals, not just the securities account. A financial or tax professional can help analyze the personal consequences without assuming a universal limit.

Questions to resolve before you act

  • What percentage of the investments I am managing is tied to this company after including relevant accounts?
  • What other financial interests or income depend on the same issuer?
  • What target or acceptable range fits my goals, time horizon and ability to withstand loss?
  • How quickly must the concentration change?
  • Would changing future contributions be fast enough, or is a partial sale necessary?
  • Which holdings would receive new money or sale proceeds, and are they genuinely diversified?
  • What taxes, fees and record-keeping obligations could the transaction create?
  • When will I review the allocation, and what change would prompt an earlier review?
