None of them guarantees an ad-free feed or stops every form of tracking.
Use the current menus described below, search a platform’s settings for ads or personalization if labels have moved, and recheck after major app or operating-system updates.

What these controls can—and cannot—change
Personalized advertising is assembled from several kinds of signals. A service may use activity inside your account, information you supplied at signup, activity shared by other businesses, selected ad topics, app suggestions or measurement data. Because the controls are split across services, turning off one setting does not disable the others.

- Account controls apply to one service, such as Meta or X. They can limit particular uses of activity for ad personalization.
- Google account controls apply to Google ad surfaces when you are signed in, including Search, Discover and YouTube.
- Device controls govern categories such as ad topics, app-suggested ads and ad measurement on the device. Menus vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Browser choices can provide an additional opt-out for the browser you are using. A choice made in one browser does not automatically follow you to another browser or device.
Opting out changes relevance, not the existence of advertising. X says, “Opting out of X’s interest-based ads won’t stop you from seeing X ads altogether.” Google likewise says that turning off ad personalization leaves ads in place, although they should be less relevant to your interests.

Prepare before changing settings
- Sign in to each account. Personalization controls usually affect the account you are viewing. If you use multiple accounts, repeat the review for each one.
- Update the app only if you normally do so. A current version may use different labels from older instructions, but updating does not guarantee that every control is available in your country.
- Record your starting point. Note which controls are enabled, especially if you share a device or manage accounts for a family member. This makes it easier to tell whether a later update changed a setting.
- Search instead of guessing. In a platform’s settings search, try ads, ad preferences, personalization, activity from other businesses or tracking. A search result is safer than following an old menu path that no longer exists.
Meta: Facebook and Instagram
Use the current Accounts Center control
Meta announced on June 9, 2026 that it is expanding Activity from other businesses, previously called Activity information from ad partners, and discontinuing the separate Your activity off Meta technologies control. The expanded setting is intended to let people manage how activity shared by other businesses is used to personalize ads and other content.
Rollout is staged. Meta said the change would begin in the United States and a number of other countries the following month, with additional countries later; it did not publish a complete country-by-country schedule. Therefore, open your own Accounts Center and use the control that is actually displayed rather than assuming the new name is available everywhere.
Steps
- Open Facebook or Instagram and go to Settings and privacy.
- Open Accounts Center, then look for the advertising or ad-preferences area.
- Find Activity from other businesses. If your account has not received the staged change, you may see older wording instead.
- Review the explanation of what data is used and switch the relevant activity-sharing or personalization option off.
- Check any separate ad-topic or sensitive-category controls shown in the same area and adjust them to your comfort level.
This setting addresses activity supplied by other businesses. It does not erase information you have given Meta, remove activity that occurs within Facebook or Instagram, or guarantee that ads will stop appearing. A missing control can reflect rollout timing or regional availability rather than a problem with your account.

X: turn off personalized ads
Account setting
- Open X and enter Settings and privacy.
- Select Privacy and safety, then Ads preferences.
- Turn off Personalized ads.
X says personalization may still use information supplied at signup and activity on X, including posts, follows, device type, location and links clicked. Turning off the interest-based option therefore reduces one source of targeting but does not create an anonymous or ad-free account.

Browser and device choices mentioned by X
X also points users toward the Digital Advertising Alliance’s choice tool for the browser currently in use. Treat that as a browser-specific choice: repeat it in other browsers and do not assume it changes an account setting inside X.
For Apple devices, X distinguishes older iOS 13-and-earlier instructions labeled Limit Ad Tracking from iOS 14-and-later controls labeled Allow Apps to Request to Track. For Android, X refers to Opt out of Ads Personalization. Labels can differ by iOS release, Android version and manufacturer, so use the current operating-system wording on your device.
Google services: My Ad Center and ad topics
Turn off personalized ads
- Open Google My Ad Center while signed in to the Google Account you use for Search, Discover or YouTube.
- Open the personalized-ads control and switch personalization off.
- Review sensitive categories and limit any category you do not want used to tailor ads, where those choices are offered.
- Open ad-topic controls to view, add or remove topics that Google associates with your advertising experience.
Google says My Ad Center settings apply wherever you are signed in with that Google Account. The control is useful for shopping ads shown across Google services, but it does not change the ad-preference setting in a separate social-media account.
Review data segments and audience uses
Google Ads help also describes controls for viewing, adding or removing ad topics and opting out of personalization based on data segments built from website visitors and app users. If you manage advertising or multiple Google accounts, check each account separately; an adjustment in one account is not a universal browser switch.

After opting out, expect ads to continue. Google characterizes them as likely to be less relevant, not absent. A shopping ad may still appear because it is contextual to the page, search or video rather than selected through the personalized setting you changed.
Android: separate ad topics, app suggestions and measurement
Open Ads privacy
- Open Settings on the Android device.
- Choose Google, then All services.
- Open Privacy & security, then Ads and Ads privacy.
- Review the three areas shown there: Ad topics, App-suggested ads and Ad measurement.
Choose what to disable
- Ad topics: turn off the feature or remove individual topics you do not want used for ad selection.
- App-suggested ads: turn off suggestions or block listed apps where the control allows it.
- Ad measurement: review the measurement permission and disable it if you do not want the device to contribute to the supported measurement process.
Google cautions that removing a topic or blocking an app does not necessarily remove every ad related to that topic or app. These settings also do not replace an account’s own ad preferences. If a menu item is missing, your Android release, manufacturer software or region may not support the same controls.
Browser and iOS layers
A browser-level choice is a separate layer from a social account. If you use an opt-out tool offered for the current browser, make the choice in every browser you regularly use. Private browsing windows, app web views and other devices may not share the same state.
On iOS, the wording changed between major releases. X’s guidance refers to Limit Ad Tracking on iOS 13 and earlier and Allow Apps to Request to Track on iOS 14 and later. Those labels describe different generations of Apple’s controls, so follow the label displayed by your version rather than searching for an older phrase. An operating-system choice can limit a class of app tracking requests, but it does not substitute for changing the ad settings inside each social app.

Other social platforms: use dated paths only as clues
A peer-reviewed study titled Navigating Social Media Privacy: Awareness, Preferences, and Discoverability recorded iOS menu paths in November 2024. It listed Facebook and Instagram under Account Center → Ad preferences → Manage info, X under Privacy and safety → Ad preferences, TikTok under Settings and privacy → Ads, and Snapchat under Settings → Ads preferences.
Those paths are a dated snapshot, not a promise that the same labels remain live. Current official instructions for TikTok and Snapchat, and a complete country-by-country account of Meta’s rollout, are not established here. For those apps, open the current settings search, look for ads or personalization, read the explanation beside each switch, and avoid assuming that a 2024 path still works.
A practical order for reducing shopping-ad personalization
- Start with the accounts you use most. Open each social app’s current ad-preferences page and disable personalized or interest-based ads where available.
- Handle Meta separately. In Accounts Center, look for Activity from other businesses and use the control shown for your region. Do not treat an older off-Meta label as universal.
- Review Google My Ad Center. Turn off personalized ads, limit sensitive categories and remove ad topics you do not want associated with your account.
- Review Android Ads privacy. Decide separately about ad topics, app-suggested ads and measurement. Removing a topic is not the same as blocking every related ad.
- Apply browser choices. Use a browser-level choice where offered, then repeat it in each browser and on each device you use.
- Check operating-system tracking prompts. Use the current iOS or Android wording; do not rely on directions written for another release.
- Test expectations. Browse normally for several days. You should not expect every shopping ad to vanish. Look instead for fewer ads that reflect the particular interests or sites you previously visited.
- Document the date. Save a note with the account, device and controls changed. This is useful after an app redesign or phone replacement.
What can still be personalized or measured
Turning off a specific control does not delete your account, erase posts or prevent a service from showing advertising. X explicitly retains the possibility of personalization from signup information and on-platform activity after its interest-based opt-out. Google describes a similar outcome in practical terms: ads remain, but should be less relevant.

A browser choice does not necessarily apply to an app. These distinctions explain why two people can change apparently similar switches and see different results.

Measurement is also distinct from personalization. Android exposes ad measurement as its own area, so changing an ad-topic setting should not be described as disabling measurement. Review each category separately and read the on-screen explanation before confirming.
Troubleshooting when a control is missing
The menu name is different
Use the settings search for ads, ad preferences, personalization or privacy. Platform redesigns often move a control without removing the underlying choice.
The control is not available
Check whether you are signed in, whether you are viewing the correct account and whether your country is included in a staged rollout. Meta’s June 2026 change is explicitly geographic and phased; the absence of Activity from other businesses does not prove that your account is malfunctioning.
Ads did not disappear
That result is expected. The controls reduce selected personalization signals; they do not promise an ad-free feed. Contextual ads, ads based on remaining account information and ads selected through another service can continue.
Settings changed after an update
Compare the current screen with your saved note, then review the new explanation before switching anything. Recheck after major app and operating-system updates because menu paths and control names are volatile.
Maintain the settings
- Review each major social account twice a year or after a privacy-policy or app-interface change.
- Repeat browser choices when you install a new browser, clear relevant settings or replace a device.
- Check Android Ads privacy after a major Android update or manufacturer interface change.
- When a platform introduces a renamed control, read whether it covers partner activity, on-platform activity, topics or measurement; do not assume the scopes are interchangeable.
For personal-finance purposes, the practical benefit is control over how strongly shopping interests follow you between services. Pair these settings with a spending plan and a pause before buying; privacy controls can reduce some triggers, but they cannot make purchasing decisions for you.
