The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. To insure a larger cash balance, either place deposits at separately chartered FDIC-insured banks or use additional ownership categories that you genuinely qualify for. Trust accounts can provide substantial additional coverage, but they have beneficiary, recordkeeping and per-owner limits.
Start by identifying the legal owner of every account, confirming each institution’s FDIC insurance status, grouping balances by ownership category, and checking the result with the FDIC’s BankFind and Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE). Treat investment products and bank-branded cash programs separately: only qualifying deposits receive deposit insurance.

The FDIC limit in one sentence
FDIC insurance is calculated separately for each depositor, each insured bank and each ownership category. Accounts in the same category at the same bank are added together before the $250,000 limit is applied.
Recommended Free Tools
| Factor | What it means |
|---|---|
| Depositor | The person, trust, business, employee-benefit plan or government entity that legally owns the deposit. |
| Insured bank | A separately chartered bank covered by the FDIC. A different branch or a marketing brand of the same bank does not create another limit. |
| Ownership category | The legal capacity in which the funds are held, such as a single account, qualifying joint account, trust account, certain retirement account or business account. |
| Limit | $250,000 of combined deposits for that depositor, bank and category. |
For example, if you have $180,000 in a savings account and $120,000 in a checking account as an individual at one insured bank, the bank treats the $300,000 as one single-account category balance. $250,000 is insured and $50,000 is above the standard limit. Renaming the accounts, opening them at different branches or obtaining several certificates of deposit at that bank does not change the calculation.

What actually creates additional coverage
Use separately chartered FDIC-insured banks
Deposits at separately chartered insured banks are calculated independently. A depositor with $250,000 in a single account at Bank A and $250,000 in a single account at Bank B can have $500,000 insured, assuming both institutions are independently insured and the balances are in the same qualifying category at each bank.
Do not assume that two names on websites, two mobile apps or two branches represent two banks. Confirm the legal institution in FDIC BankFind. Some financial companies offer accounts through one or more underlying banks, and a program’s insurance depends on how deposits are actually placed and recorded. The institution’s records, not the appearance of the account interface, control the analysis.
Use genuinely different ownership categories
A single insured bank can provide more than one $250,000 limit when you hold qualifying deposits in different ownership categories. The categories are legally defined; you cannot create a new category merely by changing an account nickname or adding an unauthorized person.
Common categories include:
- Single accounts owned by one person.
- Joint accounts that meet the FDIC’s co-owner requirements.
- Certain retirement accounts.
- Trust accounts.
- Employee-benefit plan accounts.
- Accounts owned by a corporation, partnership or unincorporated association.
- Government accounts.
Each category has its own eligibility and recordkeeping rules. A deposit can be separately insured only when the account’s legal ownership and the bank’s records support the category.
Qualifying joint accounts
For a qualifying joint account, each co-owner receives up to $250,000 for that co-owner’s share across all qualifying joint accounts at the same bank. The co-owners’ interests are combined for the calculation; opening several joint accounts does not give each account a separate limit.
FDIC qualification generally requires that each co-owner have equal withdrawal rights and sign the account signature card, subject to the stated exception for certain certificates of deposit. If you and one other owner meet the requirements, the category can provide up to $500,000 at one bank. If the same two people hold $400,000 in one qualifying joint account and $200,000 in another at that bank, the combined $600,000 exceeds the two-owner limit by $100,000.

Ownership documents and account records matter. A person listed for convenience, a payable-on-death beneficiary or an authorized signer is not automatically a co-owner for joint-account insurance.

Trust accounts
Trusts can create substantial coverage, but the calculation is narrower than many advertisements imply. For trust deposits, the general calculation is:
Number of owners × number of eligible beneficiaries × $250,000
The result is subject to a maximum of $1,250,000 per owner for all trust accounts at the same bank when there are five or more eligible beneficiaries. Naming more than five beneficiaries does not raise that per-owner cap.
| Trust example | Calculation | Maximum insured at one bank |
|---|---|---|
| One owner, two eligible beneficiaries | 1 × 2 × $250,000 | $500,000 |
| One owner, five eligible beneficiaries | 1 × 5 × $250,000, subject to the cap | $1,250,000 |
| Two owners, five eligible beneficiaries | Each owner is capped at $1,250,000 | $2,500,000 total |
Revocable and irrevocable trust deposits are combined for this purpose. For an informal revocable trust, such as a payable-on-death account, the beneficiaries must be specifically named in the insured bank’s deposit-account records. A formal trust account must satisfy its applicable title and trust requirements. A trust document alone does not guarantee that the bank’s account coding supports the intended coverage.
Deposit-insurance rules do not decide who ultimately receives the money or override state-law estate planning. Adding beneficiaries does not create unlimited insurance, and a beneficiary who is not eligible under the FDIC rules does not increase the calculation.

Certain retirement accounts
Certain retirement accounts are a separate ownership category from ordinary single accounts when they meet the applicable FDIC requirements. The category has its own $250,000-per-depositor, per-bank limit. Confirm that the account type and titling qualify rather than assuming every account described as “retirement” receives separate coverage.
Business, employee-benefit and government accounts
Corporation, partnership and unincorporated-association accounts can be treated as a separate category from the owners’ personal accounts when the entity is validly formed and the account is held in the entity’s legal name. Employee-benefit plan and government-account categories also have specific rules. Do not move personal funds into an entity account solely to obtain a second limit; the legal owner, purpose and records must be genuine.
Deposits that are covered—and products that are not
FDIC insurance protects qualifying deposits at an insured bank. Covered examples include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Checking accounts.
- Savings accounts.
- Money market deposit accounts.
- Time deposits, including certificates of deposit.
The following are not FDIC-insured deposits:
- Stocks and bonds.
- Mutual funds.
- Life-insurance policies.
- Annuities.
- Municipal securities.
A bank may distribute an investment or insurance product, but the sales channel does not turn it into an insured deposit. Read the account agreement and product description. “Money market” is especially important: a money market deposit account is a bank deposit, while a money market mutual fund is an investment product and is not an FDIC-insured deposit.
A repeatable process for protecting a large cash balance
- List the legal depositor. For every account, record whether the owner is you individually, you and another person jointly, a trust, a retirement plan, a business, an employee-benefit plan or a government entity. Use the title on the account and governing documents, not the nickname shown in an app.
- List every deposit at each institution. Include checking, savings, money market deposit accounts, CDs and deposits held through other services if the underlying bank is the same. Record current balances and, for CDs, the amount that will be payable under the contract.
- Group balances by ownership category. Add all accounts in the same category at the same bank. Separate a qualifying joint category or trust category only when the requirements are met.
- Confirm the bank’s legal identity. Use FDIC BankFind to verify that the institution is insured and determine whether accounts that look separate are actually held by the same charter. Separate branches do not count as separate banks.
- Apply the $250,000 limit. For ordinary categories, subtract the combined category balance from $250,000. For joint accounts, calculate each qualifying co-owner’s share. For trusts, apply the owner-and-beneficiary formula and the $1,250,000 per-owner cap.
- Check the account records. Ask the bank how it has coded the ownership category, whether all trust beneficiaries appear in its deposit records and whether any intermediary or sweep arrangement maintains required records.
- Run the result through EDIE. The FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator can estimate coverage from the ownership and balance information you enter. Treat the output as a check on your information, not a substitute for correcting inaccurate titles or records.
- Document the arrangement. Keep a current list of banks, charters, owners, beneficiaries, balances and maturity dates. Recheck after opening, closing, retitling or transferring an account.
Worked examples
Several accounts at one bank
Alex has $140,000 in checking, $90,000 in savings and a $70,000 CD, all titled solely in Alex’s name at one insured bank. The single-account category total is $300,000. The insured amount is $250,000; $50,000 is above the limit. Moving the CD to another branch of the same bank changes nothing.
Two separately chartered banks
Alex instead keeps $250,000 in the single-account category at Bank A and $250,000 in the single-account category at separately chartered Bank B. Each bank applies its own limit, so the full $500,000 can be insured, assuming the institutions are FDIC-insured and the balances remain within the category limit at each bank.

Single and qualifying joint categories
Jordan has $250,000 in a single account at one bank and, with a qualifying co-owner, $400,000 in joint accounts at that same bank. Jordan’s single category is fully insured. In the joint category, each of the two co-owners can receive up to $250,000, creating a $500,000 category limit; the $400,000 joint balance therefore fits within that limit. The joint account must meet the co-owner and record requirements.

Trust with five beneficiaries
A revocable trust has one owner and five eligible beneficiaries, all named in the bank’s deposit-account records. The formula produces $1,250,000, and the per-owner cap is also $1,250,000. Depositing $1,400,000 in that owner’s trust accounts at the same bank would leave $150,000 above the trust-category limit. Adding a sixth beneficiary would not increase the cap.

Counting branches as separate banks
Branches of the same insured bank share the same depositor and category limit. Consolidate all branch balances under the bank’s legal charter before calculating coverage.
Assuming account number equals coverage
Ten single accounts at one bank are still one single-account category. Account numbers organize the bank’s ledger; they do not create ten insurance limits.
Confusing an authorized signer with an owner
An employee, family member or adviser who can transact on an account is not necessarily a depositor or co-owner. Verify the legal ownership and signature-card treatment.

Calling an investment “FDIC-insured” because a bank sells it
Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, life insurance and municipal securities are not deposits insured by the FDIC. Reclassify the holding correctly when calculating insured cash.
Assuming every cash-management or sweep program has the same protection
Expanded-insurance claims are program-specific. The participating banks, account titling, allocation method and pass-through recordkeeping determine the result. Obtain the program’s current terms and identify every underlying insured bank; do not rely on a generic statement that a service provides “expanded FDIC insurance.”
Ignoring balances that change over time
Interest, payroll, sale proceeds and CD maturities can push a category over $250,000 after the original calculation. Set a review trigger for large deposits and keep a buffer below the limit when balances fluctuate.
How to maintain coverage as circumstances change
- Review balances whenever a CD matures, a trust changes, a beneficiary is added or removed, or a business account is opened or closed.
- Recheck the FDIC insurance status of every institution in BankFind after a merger, charter change or account migration notice.
- Ask whether a new product is a deposit account, a security or an insurance contract before counting it as insured cash.
- For trusts and entities, keep the bank’s account title, governing documents and beneficiary or ownership records consistent.
- Use EDIE after material changes and retain a dated copy of your assumptions and results.
When professional confirmation is worthwhile
Routine single and joint accounts can often be organized from the account agreements and FDIC guidance. Obtain direct confirmation from the bank and qualified legal or tax advisers when a plan involves a formal trust, multiple owners, an employee-benefit plan, a corporation with unusual ownership, an intermediary, or a cash-management program that places deposits at several institutions. Ask specifically which legal bank holds each dollar, which ownership category the bank records, and what records are maintained for insurance purposes.
The practical objective is not to create as many account numbers as possible. It is to match each dollar to a real FDIC-insured bank and a qualifying ownership category, keep the records accurate, and recalculate whenever the legal owner or balance changes.
