How to Keep Investing in VTI During a Market Drop

Short answer: If recurring purchases of VTI were appropriate for your time horizon, risk tolerance, cash needs, and target allocation before the decline, a falling market alone is not a personalized reason to stop them. Continue only if the original plan still fits. Do not treat the drop as proof that VTI has reached a bottom or as an automatic reason to invest extra money.

What VTI is—and what a market drop changes

Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) is an equity exchange-traded fund designed to represent the broad U.S. stock market. Vanguard lists it on NYSE Arca and says it seeks to track the Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index. Because it owns stocks, its share price moves with the value of those holdings. Vanguard warns that investment returns and principal fluctuate, and that shares sold may be worth more or less than their original cost.

A market drop changes the price at which your next purchase executes; it does not, by itself, change your investment objective, retirement date, need for cash, or ability to tolerate losses. The useful question is therefore not “Has VTI fallen enough to buy?” but “Does my written plan still make sense, and can I follow it while prices are lower?”

Fund details can change. Vanguard’s current VTI page reports a 0.03% expense ratio as of April 28, 2026 and identifies the Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index as the tracked benchmark. Check Vanguard’s latest fund page and prospectus before relying on those details.

First decide whether your original plan still fits

Continuing a scheduled contribution is a plan decision, not a market prediction. Before changing anything, reassess the four conditions that made VTI suitable in the first place.

Time horizon

Stocks can remain depressed or volatile for an extended period. Money needed soon has less capacity to absorb a prolonged decline than money earmarked for a distant goal. If the date you need the money has moved closer, the appropriate response may be to revisit the overall portfolio rather than simply keep buying the same equity exposure.

Risk tolerance

Ask how you would react if the account value fell further after your next purchase. A plan that looks comfortable after a long rise may be too aggressive when losses are visible. Risk tolerance is about your ability and willingness to stay invested through an uncertain recovery, not about finding a percentage decline that predicts the future.

Cash needs

Do not direct money to VTI that you may need for near-term bills, an upcoming purchase, taxes, or an unexpected expense. A lower share price does not make invested cash immediately available. If a contribution would force you to sell at an inconvenient time, the contribution is not consistent with the plan’s cash requirements.

Target allocation

VTI is a broad U.S. equity holding, not a complete financial plan for every investor. Compare its current role with your intended mix of stocks, bonds, cash, and any other assets. A decline can make the percentage allocated to stocks smaller, but whether to rebalance depends on your target allocation and the rules you selected in advance—not on a belief that the market must rebound next.

How continuing purchases works during a decline

When you invest a fixed amount on a recurring schedule, each purchase buys a different number of shares because the price changes. At a lower price, the same dollar amount buys more shares; at a higher price, it buys fewer. This is the basic arithmetic of dollar-cost averaging (DCA), not a guarantee that the investment will recover or profit.

Vanguard describes DCA as making continuous investments despite fluctuating price levels. Its investor-education guidance says: “You should consider whether you would be willing to continue investing during a long downturn in the market, because dollar-cost averaging involves making continuous investments regardless of fluctuating price levels.” Vanguard also cautions that “Dollar-cost averaging does not guarantee that your investments will make a profit, nor does it protect you against losses when stock or bond prices are falling.”

What stays constant What changes What that means
Your scheduled dollar contribution VTI’s market price The number of shares purchased varies from one transaction to the next.
Your investment rule Your account’s market value The account can decline even while new shares are being added.
Your long-term objective The eventual result Continuing contributions does not assure a profit, recovery, or protection from losses.

A practical decision framework

Use this sequence before you alter a recurring VTI instruction. It is designed to separate a change in your circumstances from an emotional response to a headline.

  1. Write down the original rule. Record the amount, frequency, account, purpose, target allocation, and the conditions under which you planned to review it.
  2. Check whether the goal or deadline changed. If you need the money earlier, have a new cash obligation, or lost income, those facts matter more than the day’s market move.
  3. Test a deeper decline. Consider whether you could keep making the same contribution if VTI fell further or stayed below its previous high for a long time. If the answer is no, revise the overall risk level rather than pretending the current price is a safe floor.
  4. Compare the account with your target allocation. Determine whether the drop moved you away from your chosen stock percentage. Use a pre-set rebalancing method, if you have one, instead of inventing a new threshold during stress.
  5. Confirm the money is available. Keep the contribution separate from funds needed for ordinary spending or foreseeable obligations.
  6. Review the recurring order’s status. Verify the amount, date, funding source, account eligibility, and whether your brokerage still supports the instruction for that account. Provider features and controls differ, so use the current terms for your account.
  7. Document the decision. Note why you continued, reduced, paused, or changed the allocation. A written reason makes it easier to evaluate the plan later without rewriting it after every price move.

Continue, increase, reduce, or pause?

These are different decisions. Continuing an already selected schedule is not the same as trying to time the market with an extra contribution.

Situation Reasonable next step What the evidence does not establish
Your horizon, cash position, risk tolerance, and allocation are unchanged. Keep the existing recurring purchase if it remains affordable and intentional. That the decline has ended or that recovery is imminent.
You have more investable cash and want to make an unplanned purchase. Evaluate it as a new allocation decision under your written risk rules. That buying extra during a drop is suitable for everyone.
Your income, deadline, or cash needs changed. Reassess the portfolio and contribution amount before the next order. That a lower price solves a liquidity problem.
The current stock exposure is too volatile for you. Consider a broader allocation change that matches your capacity for loss. That stopping VTI temporarily will reliably identify a better re-entry price.
You cannot tolerate a prolonged downturn. Seek qualified advice about an appropriate risk level and implementation. That any specific decline percentage is a universal trigger.

No market percentage, valuation level, or technical signal is established as a trigger for a change. Avoid turning an arbitrary threshold into a promise about what happens next.

How to keep the process mechanical

Use a fixed contribution rule

Choose an amount that remains sustainable in ordinary months and in stressful ones. A fixed-dollar rule is easier to audit than changing the amount whenever the market feels frightening or exciting. If your plan uses a percentage of income, define how often that percentage is reviewed and what would count as a genuine change in circumstances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate contribution decisions from market commentary

News can explain why prices moved, but it cannot tell you your personal cash requirement or risk capacity. Check your plan on the review dates you selected. Between reviews, change it only when a documented life or financial condition changes.

Turn off the urge to watch every quote

Frequent price checks can create pressure to cancel a sound instruction or add money impulsively. A recurring order should be checked for accuracy and funding, not repeatedly redesigned because the last trading session was negative.

Keep records

Save the contribution amount, schedule, allocation target, and review date. Include the reason for any exception. Records help you distinguish a planned rebalance from a reaction to fear and make future tax or account discussions more orderly.

What risks remain when you continue

Market loss

Every new purchase remains exposed to equity-market risk. VTI can lose value after you buy it, and a lower purchase price does not establish a minimum future price. Selling while prices are down can realize a loss relative to your purchase cost, but refusing to sell does not guarantee recovery.

Long-duration downturns

DCA requires the ability to continue through a long downturn. If contributions stop because the decline lasts longer than expected, the strategy may not match the assumptions under which you chose it. This is why Vanguard specifically asks investors to consider their willingness to keep investing through an extended decline.

Concentration in one country and asset class

VTI provides broad exposure within the U.S. stock market, but it is still an equity ETF tied to that market. Broad diversification among U.S. companies does not remove the possibility that U.S. stocks as a group fall. Review whether your complete portfolio includes the other assets your plan requires.

Liquidity and behavior risk

Money invested in VTI is not a cash reserve. The practical danger is not only a lower quotation; it is being forced to sell or abandon a plan because the contribution exceeded what your budget and emotions could sustain.

  • What fees, minimums, cash-settlement rules, or failed-payment procedures apply.

When stopping may be a rational plan change

Stopping or reducing contributions can be appropriate when the plan’s premises no longer hold. Examples include a changed time horizon, a need for cash, an income interruption, a risk level that is demonstrably too high, or a target allocation that you have deliberately revised. The justification should be the changed circumstance, not the assumption that a particular price is the bottom.

If you pause, decide in advance what event will prompt a review. “I will restart when the market feels safe” is not a measurable rule; prices and news can remain unsettling for a long time. A written date, cash-flow condition, or allocation test is easier to follow and evaluate.

When increasing contributions deserves extra scrutiny

An additional purchase during a decline is a new investment decision. It may alter your target allocation, reduce cash available for other goals, and increase the amount you could lose if prices continue falling. The fact that the purchase price is lower than a previous price does not prove that it is attractive or affordable for you.

Before adding money, identify its source, the goal it serves, the maximum loss you could tolerate, and how the purchase fits your complete allocation. If you cannot answer those questions without relying on a predicted rebound, treat the extra purchase as speculation rather than as an extension of your recurring plan.

A review schedule that avoids market timing

Set a regular review interval appropriate to your plan, then use the same checklist each time:

  1. Confirm that the goal and time horizon are unchanged.
  2. Check cash needs and the sustainability of the contribution.
  3. Compare the portfolio with the target allocation.
  4. Review the recurring instruction and account funding.
  5. Record any change and the reason for it.

Outside that schedule, intervene for a real change in circumstances—such as a job loss, a new near-term obligation, or a deliberate allocation decision—not merely because VTI rose or fell on a given day.

Questions to take to a financial professional

General information cannot determine whether VTI or a particular contribution is suitable for your circumstances. Consider consulting a qualified financial professional if you are unsure about your target allocation, cannot estimate how much cash you need, are approaching the date you will spend the money, or are tempted to make a large change based on fear. Ask the professional to explain the trade-offs, downside scenarios, costs, and the rule that would govern future changes.

The decision in one sentence

Keep investing in VTI during a market drop only when the same contribution still fits your time horizon, risk tolerance, cash needs, and target allocation; continue because it is your tested plan, not because the decline guarantees a bargain or a recovery.
