DICGC covers up to ₹5 lakh per depositor, per insured bank, in the same right and capacity. The ceiling includes principal and interest, and every branch and eligible account at one bank is aggregated.
A two-bank split of exactly ₹5 lakh each protects the principal but leaves no room for accrued interest. Use the calculation and checks below before opening or renewing any deposit.

What the ₹5 lakh DICGC limit actually covers
The Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) limit is ₹5,00,000 per depositor, per insured bank, in the same right and capacity. The amount was increased with effect from February 4, 2020. It is a combined ceiling for principal and interest, not a separate ₹5 lakh allowance for each account or each type of deposit.
DICGC’s own example shows how interest consumes the ceiling: a principal of ₹4,95,000 plus ₹4,000 of accrued interest totals ₹4,99,000 and remains within the insured amount. A principal of ₹5,00,000 leaves no insured headroom for any interest that accrues above it.

Aggregation is done across the whole bank
Savings, current, fixed and recurring deposits in the same capacity are added together. Deposits at different branches are also added together. Opening several fixed deposits, using multiple account numbers or visiting another branch therefore does not create additional insurance.
DICGC describes the rule this way: “The deposits kept in different branches of a bank are aggregated for the purpose of insurance cover and a maximum amount of upto Rupees five lakhs is paid.” Deposits held at separate insured banks receive separate limits.
The calculation to use
For each bank and each applicable capacity, calculate:
Same-capacity balance = existing eligible deposits + new principal + accrued or expected interest.
Keep that result below ₹5,00,000 if you want room for interest and account changes. A balance exactly at ₹5,00,000 may be within the ceiling at the calculation date but can exceed it as interest is credited.
Why two banks are not enough for a fully protected ₹10 lakh investment with interest
Two insured banks provide a combined principal capacity of ₹10 lakh, but only if each bank is at or below ₹5 lakh. Putting ₹5 lakh in each therefore uses the entire principal capacity and leaves no insured room for interest. If either deposit earns interest, the amount above ₹5 lakh at that bank is outside the DICGC ceiling.
There is no way to place the full ₹10 lakh principal into two banks while keeping both principals below ₹5 lakh: two amounts each below ₹5 lakh add to less than ₹10 lakh. Consequently, a saver who wants the ₹10 lakh principal and normal interest to remain within the limits needs at least three insured banks, or must accept that some interest may be uninsured.

A practical three-bank allocation
When the selected banks have no other deposits from you, an illustrative starting point is approximately ₹3.33 lakh at each of three insured banks. Each bank then has roughly ₹1.67 lakh of nominal room under the ₹5 lakh ceiling for accrued interest and other same-capacity balances. The exact room depends on the rate, tenure, compounding method, deposit dates and any later credits.
| Illustrative allocation | Principal per bank | Nominal room before the cap | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two banks | ₹5,00,000 each to place all ₹10 lakh | ₹0 per bank | Principal fits, but interest above ₹5 lakh is not insured. |
| Three banks | About ₹3,33,333 each | About ₹1,66,667 each | Leaves substantial room for interest, subject to actual balances. |
| Four banks | ₹2,50,000 each | ₹2,50,000 each | More headroom and diversification, but more accounts to administer. |
The figures in the table are illustrations, not a promise that a particular bank will remain available, insured or suitable. Recalculate before investing and whenever a deposit is renewed or interest is credited.
Example with existing balances
Suppose you already hold ₹1,80,000 in savings and a ₹70,000 fixed deposit at Bank A. Both are in your individual name, so the bank’s starting same-capacity balance is ₹2,50,000. Only about ₹2,50,000 of additional principal could be placed there before reaching the nominal ceiling, and less should be added if interest will accrue. The ₹10 lakh investment would then need to be distributed among other insured banks after their existing balances are checked.
Step-by-step method for investing the ₹10 lakh
- List every deposit by bank. Record savings, current, fixed and recurring deposits, including those at different branches. Include deposits that are about to mature if they will be renewed.
- Separate balances by legal capacity. Start with individual accounts, joint accounts, sole-proprietor business accounts and any trustee, guardian, partner or director capacity shown in the bank records. Do not assume that a different product or branch is a different capacity.
- Verify insurance status. Check DICGC’s current official insured-bank list for each institution. The list search result showed an update date of September 22, 2026; use the live list when making the deposit. If the status is unclear, ask the branch for confirmation before transferring funds.
- Estimate interest through the holding period. Ask the bank for the maturity value or use its stated compounding schedule. A simple planning estimate can be made from principal × annual rate × days ÷ 365, but a bank’s actual schedule is preferable for a fixed or recurring deposit.
- Calculate available capacity. For each bank, subtract existing same-capacity balances and the expected interest on the new deposit from ₹5,00,000. The remainder is the maximum new principal that keeps the projected total within the ceiling.
- Choose the number of banks. Use three or more insured banks when the goal is to protect ₹10 lakh plus interest. More banks create more headroom but also mean more statements, renewal dates and documentation.
- Allocate the principal below each calculated ceiling. Leave a buffer rather than targeting ₹5 lakh exactly. Ensure the sum of the proposed allocations is ₹10 lakh and that each bank’s projected total remains below ₹5 lakh.
- Keep evidence. Save deposit receipts, account statements, interest schedules and the insurance-status check. These records make it easier to recalculate after a maturity, transfer or change in ownership.
- Recheck at every renewal. A deposit that was within the limit can cross it when interest is added or when a matured amount is automatically renewed. Recompute before accepting a renewal instruction.
How ownership and account capacity can change the calculation
DICGC treats some deposits in different rights and capacities separately. Its examples include individual holdings, a partner’s account, a guardian’s account, a director’s account, a trustee’s account and qualifying joint-account holdings. The separation depends on the real legal capacity in which the deposit is held, not simply on a label chosen to obtain more insurance.

Joint accounts
Joint accounts with the same people listed in the same order are aggregated for insurance purposes. A changed order or changed membership can qualify as a different right and capacity under DICGC’s examples. Because the outcome depends on the exact names, order and bank records, ask the bank to confirm the treatment before relying on it.
Sole-proprietor deposits
A sole proprietor’s business deposit and that proprietor’s personal deposit are aggregated rather than automatically receiving separate limits. A business name on the account does not by itself create another ₹5 lakh ceiling.
Do not rearrange ownership on paper solely for insurance
Changing names or account descriptions without a genuine legal and economic distinction can create operational, tax, succession and access complications. Use a distinct capacity only when it reflects the real ownership or fiduciary relationship, and obtain written confirmation from the bank about how it will be recorded for DICGC purposes.

Which deposits are eligible
DICGC lists savings, fixed, current and recurring deposits among covered deposit types, subject to its rules and the ₹5 lakh ceiling. Eligibility of the deposit type does not remove the aggregation rule; all eligible balances in the same capacity at one bank are combined.

DICGC states that all commercial banks, including foreign-bank branches in India, local area banks and regional rural banks are insured, and that cooperative banks are covered. Primary cooperative societies are not insured. The institution still must appear on the current official insured-bank list, so check the specific bank rather than relying on its category alone.
What DICGC insurance does not cover
The following are outside the deposit-insurance framework described in DICGC’s official materials:
- Deposits of foreign governments.
- Deposits of the Central or State Governments.
- Inter-bank deposits.
- Deposits received outside India.
- Amounts specifically exempted with approval of the Reserve Bank of India.
- Mutual funds, stocks, bonds and exchange-traded funds. These are investments, not bank deposits, and are not protected by DICGC deposit insurance.
Putting ₹10 lakh into a combination of a bank deposit and market securities therefore requires two separate risk and protection assessments. Only the eligible bank-deposit portion is tested against the DICGC limit.
Choosing between banks after the insurance calculation
Insurance capacity is the first screen, not the only decision. For each candidate deposit, compare:
- Insured-bank status: confirm the institution on the current DICGC list.
- Total same-capacity balance: include every existing account at that bank and all branches.
- Projected principal plus interest: leave headroom below ₹5 lakh.
- Deposit rate and tenure: a higher rate can consume the available insurance room faster.
- Premature-withdrawal rules: check penalties, reduced interest or restrictions before locking funds.
- Liquidity and maturity dates: stagger maturities if you may need access at different times.
Rate and access terms are product choices; they do not increase the DICGC ceiling. A bank offering a higher rate may require a smaller principal allocation to maintain the same insurance buffer.

Mistake: assuming that every institution called a bank, or every cooperative entity, has identical insurance status.
Correction: check the current DICGC list and obtain branch confirmation if an institution is not clearly listed.
Access, claims and the limit’s practical boundary
DICGC insurance defines the amount protected under the applicable trigger and cut-off rules; it is not a guarantee that money will be immediately withdrawable during every bank event. A depositor may face administrative or processing delays. Amounts above the ₹5 lakh ceiling, including excess interest, are not made insured merely because they appear on the same deposit receipt.
Keep account and nominee records current, retain deposit receipts and monitor notices from the bank. These steps do not raise the limit, but they reduce confusion if a bank event requires records to be reconciled.
A worksheet for your ₹10 lakh plan
Complete this table before transferring funds:
| Bank | Existing same-capacity balance | New principal proposed | Expected interest through maturity | Projected total | Below ₹5 lakh? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank 1 | Enter statement total | Enter allocation | Enter bank estimate | Existing + new + interest | Yes/No |
| Bank 2 | Enter statement total | Enter allocation | Enter bank estimate | Existing + new + interest | Yes/No |
| Bank 3 | Enter statement total | Enter allocation | Enter bank estimate | Existing + new + interest | Yes/No |
Add rows for every bank you use. The proposed-principal column must total ₹10 lakh, while every projected-total cell should remain below ₹5 lakh if full principal and estimated interest are to fit within the limit.
