Do not move an AI-picked portfolio to cash merely because markets are falling. Keep it when its goal, time horizon, risk level, diversification and costs still fit your situation. Change the plan when your circumstances or objective changed, the original risk answers were wrong, or the service no longer meets your needs. A market decline by itself does not prove that an automated recommendation is unsuitable, and no investor can know the bottom in advance.
What an “AI-picked” portfolio usually is
“AI-picked” is often a marketing description for a robo-adviser or hybrid advice service. In practice, the service normally asks about objectives, time horizon, risk tolerance, income, assets, debts and liquidity needs, then maps those answers to a model portfolio. The portfolio may use exchange-traded funds or other pooled investments, apply a target allocation and automatically place trades.

Unless a provider publishes detailed evidence about a particular machine-learning system, you cannot infer how “intelligent” the selection is from the label. The useful question is whether the recommendation process collects the information that matters, applies a coherent investment strategy and remains suitable as your life changes.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor Bulletin on robo-advisers puts the central issue plainly: understand how the service develops a recommendation and what information it does—and does not—use. An automated answer is only as relevant as the inputs and assumptions behind it.

Start with a downturn triage, not a trade
Before changing anything, separate a market event from a change in your personal ability to take risk. Write down the answers rather than relying on how the latest account statement feels.
| Question | If the answer is “no change” | If the answer is “changed” |
|---|---|---|
| Is the money still for the same goal? | Keep evaluating the existing plan against that goal. | Recalculate the amount and timing required for the new goal. |
| Is the time horizon still long enough for the portfolio’s volatility? | A temporary decline may be consistent with the plan. | Consider whether the allocation now exposes a near-term need to losses. |
| Can you still meet essential spending without selling investments? | Liquidity pressure is not forcing an immediate portfolio change. | Build or restore an appropriate cash reserve and review withdrawals. |
| Were the original risk answers accurate? | The recommendation can be assessed on its original terms. | Correct the profile; the prior allocation may never have been suitable. |
| Does the service still provide the features and support you need? | Continue the service review without a panic trade. | Compare alternatives or seek qualified human advice. |
This is a review framework, not a universal rule that every investor should remain invested. Suitability depends on your facts, including your capacity for loss and need for liquidity.
Reconstruct what the service actually recommended
Many investors remember a risk label such as “balanced” but not the assumptions that produced it. Open the account’s recommendation, questionnaire history and disclosures. Save a copy before editing answers so you can identify what changed.

Confirm the goal and dollar date
Identify whether the account is intended for retirement, a home purchase, education, a general reserve or another objective. Record the target amount, contribution schedule and the date you expect to use the money. A portfolio for a goal 25 years away faces a different sequence of risks from one funding a tuition payment next year.
Check the time horizon used by the algorithm
Some services use a single horizon; others model several goals. Verify which account and goal generated the recommendation. If a planned withdrawal moved closer, update the service rather than assuming the old mix remains appropriate.

Review risk tolerance and risk capacity separately
Risk tolerance is how much fluctuation you can emotionally accept. Risk capacity is how much loss your finances can withstand while still meeting obligations. A questionnaire may measure one better than the other. A high tolerance cannot compensate for a near-term cash need, unstable income or insufficient emergency savings.
List the information the service did not ask for
Check whether it considered debts, guaranteed income, concentrated holdings outside the account, tax status, dependents, insurance needs and upcoming expenses. A short questionnaire can produce a neat allocation while omitting facts that materially change your ability to take risk. If a missing fact matters, provide it through the service’s update process or discuss it with a qualified, appropriately registered adviser.

Read the target allocation
Record the percentage assigned to each major asset class, such as domestic shares, international shares, government or corporate bonds, cash and any alternatives. Ask whether the displayed percentages are strategic targets or merely current weights after market movement. Do not assume a “conservative” label has the same meaning across providers.
Look for concentration and overlap
Count the underlying funds and examine what they own. Several funds can hold many of the same large companies, creating more concentration than the dashboard suggests. Check geographic exposure, currency exposure, credit quality, duration and sector weights. Diversification reduces dependence on one holding or risk factor; it cannot eliminate losses during a broad decline.
Understand the investment choices available
The SEC warns that some automated services use a limited menu of investments. Limited choices are not automatically defective, but you should know what is excluded and why. A narrow menu may leave you with less exposure to an asset class you expected, or with a strategy that does not account for a holding you keep elsewhere.

Separate advisory fees from fund expenses
Calculate the total recurring cost: the service’s advisory fee, expense ratios charged by underlying funds, account fees, trading costs and any cash-sweep spread or other charge. Ask whether fees are tiered, waived temporarily or charged on cash. A low advisory fee does not guarantee a low all-in cost.
What a market decline does to an automated portfolio
Prices do not fall evenly. If shares decline while bonds hold up, the portfolio’s actual percentages can drift below or above their targets. That drift changes the risk you are carrying even when you have not placed a trade. A service may also use cash flows, scheduled reviews or threshold bands to restore the mix.
Volatility is an expected feature of assets with higher long-term return potential, but the size and duration of a decline are unknowable in advance. Remaining invested does not promise a recovery or a positive return. It simply avoids making a market-timing decision based on a forecast that may be wrong. Charles Schwab’s investor guidance notes that no one can know the market bottom beforehand.
Understand rebalancing before you let automation trade
Rebalancing restores a chosen target
Suppose your stated target is 60% shares and 40% bonds. If shares fall and the account becomes 52% shares and 48% bonds, rebalancing would buy shares, sell some bonds or direct new contributions toward shares until the target—or an allowed range—is restored. It does not mean the service has changed your long-term risk objective.
Allocation changes are different
Changing the target from 60/40 to 40/60 is a new investment decision. It may be justified if your goal, horizon, liquidity need or ability to withstand loss changed. It is not the same as rebalancing after a price move. Ask the provider to show which action it is taking.

Find the trigger and schedule
Read the service agreement for the exact rule: calendar-based review, percentage threshold, cash-flow rebalancing or a combination. Find out whether the platform can alter targets automatically, whether it pauses trades in unusual conditions and how it treats deposits and withdrawals. There is no single industry-wide trigger or frequency.
Check tax consequences
In a taxable account, selling a position to rebalance can realize a capital gain or loss. Tax-loss harvesting may sell a losing investment and replace it with another that is not substantially identical, subject to applicable rules and your circumstances. The SEC advises considering a tax professional when evaluating tax-loss-harvesting implications. Do not assume an automated tax feature is available, suitable or beneficial in every account.
Should you move the portfolio to cash?
Moving everything to cash removes market exposure but creates a new decision: when and how will you reinvest? Because the bottom is unknowable, a cash move can turn a temporary decline into a realized loss and leave you waiting for a recovery that is difficult to time. It can still be reasonable to raise cash for a known, near-term obligation or because the original risk level was unsuitable. In that case, change only the amount and allocation required by the need, and document the plan for future contributions and withdrawals.
Cash held inside an investment account may also have a different yield, protection, tax treatment and fee structure from a bank deposit. Read the account disclosures before treating it as an emergency fund.
Should you lower the allocation to minimize volatility?
Lowering exposure to volatile assets can make statements easier to tolerate, but it also lowers the portfolio’s potential growth and may create a shortfall for a long-term goal. First determine whether the issue is emotional discomfort, a changed capacity for loss or an incorrect recommendation. If the allocation is still suitable, consider using the service’s written risk profile and rebalancing policy rather than repeatedly changing targets after each market move.

If you cannot accept the losses implied by the current mix, that is useful information—not a personal failure. Update the risk answers honestly and model the effect on the goal before confirming a new target.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When changing the plan is warranted
- Your goal moved closer or became larger. A purchase, tuition bill or planned retirement date can reduce the time available to recover from losses.
- Your income, job security or debt changed. Lower risk capacity can justify a new allocation even if your emotional tolerance is unchanged.
- You need liquidity. An investment portfolio should not be the only source for an expense that must be paid soon.
- The questionnaire was incomplete or inaccurate. Correcting the inputs may produce a different recommendation for a valid reason.
- The strategy or service no longer fits. Limited investment choices, unclear volatility procedures, excessive total costs or unavailable support are reasons to reassess the provider.
Make a deliberate change, record why it was made and set a date to review it. Do not keep changing the target solely to chase the most recent market winner or avoid the latest loser.
Audit the robo-adviser during a volatile period
Use the provider’s disclosures, account agreement and support responses to answer these questions. Features, prices, eligibility and tax treatment can change, so verify the current terms directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Area to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Information collected | Which goals, horizons, income, assets, debts, tax details and liquidity needs affect the recommendation? Can you see and correct the answers? |
| Portfolio choices | Which asset classes and funds are available? How are diversification and concentration monitored? |
| Risk setting | How is risk scored, and what events trigger a review? Can the target change without your approval? |
| Rebalancing | Is it calendar-based, threshold-based or cash-flow driven? What trades occur after a large decline? |
| Volatility procedures | Has the service explained how it operates in stressed markets? Are there trading pauses, restrictions or communication procedures? |
| Costs | What are the advisory fee, fund expenses, account charges, trading costs and cash charges? Which are recurring? |
| Tax features | Is tax-loss harvesting offered, for which account types, and with what limitations? Who is responsible for tax reporting? |
| Human assistance | Can you reach a qualified representative, what can that person advise on, and what does the service cost? |
| Stress-test evidence | What assumptions or historical periods were used to evaluate the approach? The SEC notes that some services may not have been tested under stressed conditions. |
These questions identify differences; they do not establish that one provider is superior. A service that cannot clearly explain its process deserves extra scrutiny before you rely on it for an important goal.
Practical responses to common downturn situations
| Your situation | Reasonable next step | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Long-term goal, stable finances, accurate risk profile | Confirm the target, review rebalancing and continue the agreed contribution plan. | Moving entirely to cash based only on headlines. |
| Goal date is within a few years | Model required withdrawals and review whether the current mix exposes that money to unacceptable loss. | Assuming a long-term allocation automatically suits a near-term expense. |
| Job loss or major debt increase | Protect essential liquidity, update the service’s financial information and obtain personalized advice if needed. | Treating the investment account as a substitute for a cash reserve. |
| Risk questionnaire answers were rushed | Retake or correct the questionnaire and compare the new recommendation with the old one. | Keeping an allocation you never understood. |
| High fees or unclear holdings | Request a complete cost and holdings breakdown and compare services on the same basis. | Comparing headline advisory fees alone. |
| Taxable account with large gains or losses | Estimate tax effects before selling and consult a tax professional for complex situations. | Assuming an automated sale has no tax consequence. |
Questions to send customer support
- “What goal, horizon and risk score are currently attached to this account?”
- “Show my target allocation, current allocation and the drift that would trigger a trade.”
- “Will your system change my target during a downturn, or only rebalance back to the existing target?”
- “Which funds do I own, what are their expense ratios and where is the complete holdings list?”
- “What happens to new deposits, withdrawals and automatic contributions when markets move sharply?”
- “What taxes could result from selling, rebalancing or harvesting losses in my account type?”
- “What human support is available, and is that support investment, tax or financial-planning advice?”
- “What limitations, investment exclusions or stressed-market assumptions should I know about?”
Keep the answers with your account records. Clear explanations make it easier to distinguish a normal rebalance from an unexpected change in strategy.
A repeatable downturn checklist
- Pause reactionary trades. Give yourself a short cooling-off period unless an immediate cash need requires action.
- Write down the goal and date. Include the amount you expect to need and any withdrawals already planned.
- Verify the inputs. Review the questionnaire, risk score, income, debts, liquidity and outside holdings.
- Compare target with current weights. Identify whether the account has drifted and by how much.
- Read the rebalancing rule. Note the schedule, thresholds, eligible investments and tax handling.
- Calculate total costs. Include advisory charges, fund expenses and account-level fees.
- Decide whether circumstances changed. If they did, update the plan; if not, follow the suitable strategy you selected.
- Get personalized help when necessary. Use a qualified, appropriately registered adviser or tax professional for decisions that depend on your complete financial or tax situation.
- Set the next review date. Review after a material life change or at a sensible interval, not after every alarming headline.
Limits of automated investing
An algorithm cannot know facts you did not provide, predict the next market move or guarantee that a model portfolio will meet its objective. Provider assumptions, fund menus, fees, eligibility and account treatment may change. The SEC also cautions that some services have limited investment choices and may lack testing in stressed conditions.
Staying invested is therefore conditional, not automatic: keep the portfolio when it remains suitable; change it when your objective, finances, risk capacity or confidence in the service has materially changed. That distinction lets you respond to a real planning problem without turning a temporary market decline into an impulsive investment decision.
