Why Amazon can use your Citi ThankYou Points
Citi’s ThankYou Rewards FAQ says, “You’ll automatically be enrolled in Shop with Points when you add your eligible Citi credit card to your Amazon account.” Once the link is active, ThankYou Points may be available for eligible Amazon purchases when you pay with that Citi card. The enrollment is tied to the rewards connection between Amazon and Citi; it is not simply a choice of which card Amazon uses for an order.
You can read Citi’s explanation of automatic enrollment and eligible-card behavior in the Citi ThankYou Rewards FAQ. Citi’s terms also say that, after automatic enrollment, the retailer sends an email explaining how to de-enroll. That message can be useful when the account page does not show an obvious option.

Shop with Points and Amazon’s default card are different settings
Many people change Amazon’s default payment method and expect the points behavior to stop. These are separate controls with different purposes.

Amazon’s payment help documents Your Payments > Settings for changing the Default Purchase Preference. That path is useful if you want another card selected for regular purchases, but it should not be treated as proof that Shop with Points has been disabled.
How to turn off Citi points for Amazon purchases
Use the following process from the Amazon account that contains the Citi card. Amazon may present slightly different labels, and the Shop with Points feature is not necessarily available for every rewards program.
- Sign in to the correct Amazon account. Use the account where you added the eligible Citi card. If your household has multiple Amazon accounts, switching settings on a different account will not change the link you are trying to stop.
- Open Your Account. From the account menu, look for a section named Shop with Points, a rewards-management page, or a similar area that lists linked rewards programs. The exact placement can change as Amazon updates its account interface.
- Locate the rewards-use control. Look for a toggle beneath wording such as Use rewards, or for an action that manages the Citi enrollment. Amazon customer guidance describes opting out by switching this toggle off. The guidance says, “To opt out of this feature, select the toggle off button.” See the Amazon Shop with Points customer guidance for that instruction.
- Turn the toggle off or choose de-enrollment. If the page offers a specific Citi option to de-enroll, use that action. If it shows only a general Use rewards switch, turn it off and follow any confirmation prompt.
- Check the final state. Reopen the page or refresh it and verify that the control remains off, disabled, or marked as unenrolled. A browser back button or an abandoned confirmation screen is not enough to establish that the change saved.
- Keep the enrollment email. Search your email for the Shop with Points enrollment notice. Citi’s ThankYou terms say the retailer’s message explains how to de-enroll, so its instructions may provide an account-specific route if Amazon’s current menu is different.
Do not remove the Citi card from every Amazon payment method merely to disable rewards unless you also want to stop using that card for ordinary purchases. Removing a payment card and turning off Shop with Points address different things.
What happens when you add, replace, or remove a Citi card
The automatic-enrollment statement applies when an eligible Citi credit card is added to an Amazon account. That means adding a replacement card, a second eligible card, or a card on another Amazon account can produce a different rewards link from the one you are trying to change. Check the exact account and card shown in the Shop with Points area before assuming one switch covers every card you own.
If a card expires, is replaced, or is removed, the controls displayed for that card may change. The absence of a card entry is not, by itself, proof that an earlier transaction was reversed or that every rewards connection has been cancelled. Ask support to confirm the status of the specific card-to-account link when the history is unclear.

Also distinguish enrollment from an individual order. A setting that prevents future rewards use is different from a points amount already displayed on a past order. Keep the order confirmation and rewards activity details if you need to ask about a transaction later.

A missing control does not necessarily mean that the enrollment is absent. Amazon says the feature may not be available for all rewards programs, and the reviewed customer guidance does not guarantee one universal screen path for every Citi-linked account. Work through these checks before changing payment methods.
Confirm the account and card
- Verify that you are signed in to the Amazon account where the Citi card was originally added.
- Check whether the card is still present in the account’s payment methods. A card that was replaced, expired, or removed may no longer display the same rewards controls.
- Search email for terms such as “Shop with Points,” “Citi,” “ThankYou,” “enrollment,” or “de-enroll.” The enrollment message may contain the retailer’s current instructions.
Look in the rewards area, not only in payment settings
The Your Payments > Settings page controls the Default Purchase Preference. It is not documented as the Shop with Points enrollment page. Return to Your Account and inspect sections related to rewards, points, or Shop with Points separately.
Use support when the link is unclear
If the linked Citi entry or an opt-out action is absent, contact Amazon or Citi support and ask them to check the status of the specific Citi card-to-Amazon account link. Give support the email address or account identifier they request, but do not send a full card number or security code through an unsolicited message. Ask whether the account is enrolled in Shop with Points and what exact action will disable rewards use.
Because account controls, eligible cards, and reward terms can change, rely on the labels currently displayed in your account and on the enrollment email rather than an old screenshot or a menu path copied from another account.

It stops the rewards default, not necessarily the card itself
Turning off the Use rewards control or de-enrolling the Citi link is aimed at preventing ThankYou Points from being selected or made available as the default rewards payment for eligible Amazon purchases. The Citi card can remain in Amazon’s wallet for ordinary card payments if you want to keep using it that way.

It does not select a new ordinary payment card
If you also want Amazon to charge a different card by default, change Default Purchase Preference under Your Payments > Settings. Treat that as a separate task and verify both settings independently.
It does not establish a universal point value
Citi says ThankYou Point value varies according to the Citi card and the reward selected. The value you receive through Amazon, a statement credit, a direct deposit, or another option should be checked in the redemption screen for your card. There is no single cents-per-point figure that can be applied to every Citi account or redemption.
How to verify that points are no longer being selected
After changing the Shop with Points setting, verify the result before placing an expensive order:
- Open the Shop with Points or rewards page again and confirm that Use rewards remains off or that the Citi link is marked unenrolled.
- Add an item to your cart and proceed to the payment-selection step without submitting the order.
- Inspect the payment summary for any line showing ThankYou Points, rewards, or a points-applied amount.
- If points still appear selected, stop before placing the order. Recheck the rewards setting, then contact Amazon or Citi if the account status and checkout behavior conflict.
- For a later order, inspect the payment summary again. A saved checkout choice can differ from the account-level setting, so the order review page is the final place to catch an unwanted points application.
This check confirms what the current account is presenting at checkout; it does not create a guaranteed permanent interface layout. Amazon can revise labels and controls, and some rewards programs may not expose the same options.
Common mistakes when trying to stop points use
Changing only the default card
Selecting another card under Default Purchase Preference may change which card Amazon proposes for a purchase, but the available documentation does not say that it de-enrolls Shop with Points. Check the rewards page as a separate step.
Deleting the Citi card before recording the account state
Removing the card may also prevent you from using it for normal Amazon purchases, while leaving uncertainty about the rewards enrollment itself. If your goal is only to preserve ThankYou Points, try the Shop with Points control first.

Assuming every account has the same toggle
Amazon’s guidance describes a toggle below Use rewards but also warns that Shop with Points may not be available for every rewards program. If your page has different wording, look for a Citi-specific de-enrollment action and use the enrollment email as an additional reference.

Assuming that an off switch changes past orders
The opt-out procedure is for future rewards use. It does not, by itself, document a reversal of points already applied to an order. For a disputed or unexpected redemption, review the order and rewards activity and ask Amazon or Citi what correction options apply to that transaction.
Using an old help page as the only evidence
Account interfaces change. Use the current controls shown after signing in, and treat the linked Amazon guidance and Citi terms as explanations of the feature rather than a promise that every account will show identical labels.

If you want to keep points away from Amazon, you can leave the Shop with Points setting off and choose another Citi redemption when you are ready. Citi’s FAQ lists cash-oriented options including a statement credit, direct deposit, or a check by mail. It also explains that point value depends on the card and the reward, so compare the choices shown for your own account rather than relying on a general conversion rate.
The practical decision is whether you want points available for a different redemption, not whether one option has a universally higher value. Before confirming a redemption, read the current terms, minimums, and delivery method displayed by Citi for your card.
