To join a credit union, first confirm that you fit its field of membership—the employer, profession, association, geographic area, or family or household relationship the institution is allowed to serve. Then provide the identity and eligibility information the credit union requests, complete its membership application, and deposit the required share amount. For a federal credit union, NCUA guidance requires a qualifying person to deposit and maintain one share; the credit union sets that share’s par value.
This is a U.S.-focused guide. Exact documents, opening deposits, fees, application channels, and processing times vary by institution, and state-chartered credit unions may follow additional state rules. Verify the live terms with the credit union you plan to join.

What a credit union membership actually is
A credit union is a member-owned financial cooperative. You do not simply open an account at any institution that advertises itself as convenient; you must first belong to a group the credit union is authorized to serve. That group is defined in the institution’s field of membership.

NCUA describes three federal-credit-union charter structures: single common bond, multiple common bond, and community. A common bond can be occupational or associational. A community charter covers a defined geographic community. The approved field of membership for a particular credit union—not a generic label such as “open to the public”—controls eligibility. See the NCUA field-of-membership guidance.

Membership is separate from choosing a checking, savings, loan, or credit-card product. You generally become a member by opening the institution’s required share account and keeping the required share in it. Other products may have their own underwriting or account rules.
Eligibility routes you may be able to use
There is no single nationwide eligibility test. Look for the exact wording in the credit union’s membership page, bylaws summary, or account-opening disclosures, then ask the institution if your circumstances fit before submitting an application.
Employment or profession
An occupational common bond can cover employees of a named company, a group of related employers, a profession, or another defined workplace category. A job title alone may not be enough: the employer or occupational group must match the approved wording. If you recently changed jobs, ask whether former employees, contractors, retirees, or employees of affiliated entities are included rather than assuming they are.
Association or organization membership
An associational common bond may be based on membership in a specified association, club, faith community, school community, labor organization, or similar group. The association named in the field of membership matters. Ask whether you must already belong, whether joining the association as part of the credit-union application is permitted, and what evidence the institution accepts.
Residence, work, worship, or school in a community
A community-chartered credit union serves a defined geographic area. The area can be described by counties, cities, neighborhoods, census-defined boundaries, or another approved description. “Community” does not mean every person in the country can join. Confirm whether your home address, workplace, school, or place of worship falls inside the stated area and how the credit union verifies it.

Family or household connection
NCUA’s Charter Application Guide, updated March 30, 2026, gives immediate family or household membership as an example of a possible eligibility route. It is not a promise that every credit union accepts every relationship. Ask which relationships qualify—for example, a spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, or household member—and whether the existing member must be in good standing or provide information.
Other categories written into the charter
Some fields of membership combine several categories or use specialized language. Read the complete eligibility description instead of relying on a search result, a social-media post, or an employee’s informal summary. If the description is unclear, call or message the credit union and request a decision before you gather documents.

For a federal credit union, NCUA guidance says a qualifying applicant must deposit and maintain one share. The credit union determines the share’s par value, so there is no universal dollar amount that applies to all federal credit unions. The share is commonly held in a regular share account, but the institution’s current disclosures control the account type and terms. Review the explanation in the NCUA guidance on bank-to-credit-union conversions and ask the institution for its current minimum.
Do not confuse the membership share with a minimum balance for every product. A checking account, money-market account, certificate, or loan can have separate balance, fee, or underwriting requirements. The share is the gateway to membership; it does not guarantee approval for another product.
How to join a credit union: a practical sequence
- List your possible eligibility connections. Write down your employer, profession, association memberships, home and work locations, school or worship location, and family or household relationships to existing members.
- Shortlist institutions you can realistically use. Consider branch and ATM access, online and mobile services, hours, products you need, and whether you can meet the field-of-membership wording. A convenient branch is not useful if you are ineligible.
- Read the precise field-of-membership description. Look for the named employer or association, the geographic boundary, or the qualifying relationship. The NCUA overview of federal credit-union charters explains why each institution has a defined service group.
- Ask how eligibility is proved. Contact the credit union before applying. Ask which evidence it accepts for your particular route, whether documents must be current, and whether electronic uploads, mailed copies, or an in-branch review are available.
- Ask for the share and account terms. Confirm the required share amount, the account in which it will be held, whether the amount must remain on deposit, and any account-opening or ongoing fees. For a federal credit union, at least one share must be deposited and maintained, but the par value is institution-specific.
- Prepare identity information. The credit union will conduct its own identity and regulatory checks. Ask which personal details and documents it needs, how it protects uploaded information, and what to do if your legal name or address differs across records.
- Submit the membership application through the available channel. Follow the institution’s online, phone, mail, or branch process. This is the selected credit union’s workflow, not one NCUA-mandated form used everywhere.
- Fund the required share. Use an accepted funding method and save the confirmation. If the transfer is pending, ask when membership becomes effective and whether the share must be funded before other accounts can be opened.
- Record your membership status and next steps. Keep the welcome notice, account disclosures, member number, and contact details. Ask how to access digital banking, order payment instruments, add a joint owner, or apply for other products.
Documents and information: what to expect
Official sources do not establish one cross-industry checklist. Requirements differ by eligibility route, charter, application channel, and the credit union’s identity-verification process. Treat the following as questions to ask, not universal mandates.

| Item | Why the credit union may request it | What is not standardized |
|---|---|---|
| Government-issued identification | To verify identity and comply with the institution’s account-opening controls. | The accepted document types, expiration rules, and whether a branch visit is required. |
| Legal name, date of birth, address, and contact details | To create the member record and perform identity checks. | Which supporting records are needed when information cannot be verified electronically. |
| Employment or professional information | To show that you fit an occupational field of membership. | Whether a pay stub, employer letter, badge, license, or another record is accepted. |
| Association information | To establish membership in a named qualifying organization. | Whether a membership number, card, receipt, or direct confirmation is required. |
| Address or location evidence | To show residence, work, school, or worship in a community field of membership. | The geographic boundary and the form of proof the institution accepts. |
| Family or household member details | To document a relationship to an eligible member where the charter permits it. | Which relationships qualify and whether the existing member must participate. |
| Opening-funds information | To deposit the required share and any selected account opening balance. | The minimum amount, payment methods, holds, and any separate fees. |
Before uploading sensitive documents, confirm that you are using the credit union’s official website or a verified branch or phone number. If a representative asks for something that conflicts with published disclosures, pause and request an explanation.
Costs, minimums, and processing time
The required share is the one amount addressed consistently for federal credit unions: one share, with a par value set by the institution. The sources do not establish a universal dollar minimum, recurring membership fee, application fee, opening balance, or processing-time standard.
Ask these questions in one conversation so you can compare institutions accurately:
- What exact amount must be deposited for the membership share?
- Must that amount remain in the share account to keep membership active?
- Are there account-opening, monthly, paper-statement, overdraft, or other fees?
- Is an additional opening balance required for checking or another product?
- Which funding methods are accepted, and when are funds available?
- How long does identity and eligibility review usually take for this application channel?
- What happens if the application is incomplete or eligibility cannot be verified?
Do not treat a promotional amount or a representative’s estimate as a permanent term. Read the current fee schedule and account agreement before funding the account.
Membership, account ownership, and share insurance
Membership status and account ownership are connected but not identical concepts. NCUA says primary owners on share accounts at federally insured credit unions must fall within the institution’s field of membership and be recorded as members. Review the NCUA frequently asked questions about share insurance for the ownership rule and discuss joint-owner arrangements with the credit union.

If you are adding another person, ask whether that person must independently qualify, whether the person will be a member or merely an authorized user, and how ownership is recorded. Do not assume that being related to an eligible applicant automatically makes every account owner eligible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Federal versus state-chartered credit unions
NCUA materials cited here focus especially on federal credit unions. A state-chartered credit union may have a different approved field of membership and may also be subject to state-specific requirements. The same practical sequence still helps—confirm eligibility, ask about proof, review the share requirement and disclosures, complete identity checks, and fund the account—but the exact legal and account terms come from the institution and its chartering authority.
Ask whether the credit union is federally chartered or state chartered, whether it is federally insured, and which regulator’s disclosures govern your account. That distinction matters when you interpret eligibility language and insurance information.
How to compare credit unions before applying
Compare actual institutions only after confirming that each one serves you. Use the same questions for every candidate and record the answers from current disclosures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Comparison axis | Questions to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility route | Which employer, association, community, or relationship qualifies? | An attractive product lineup is irrelevant if you cannot join. |
| Geographic reach | Where are branches, shared access points, ATMs, and service areas? | Access affects deposits, cash withdrawals, and problem resolution. |
| Membership share | What is the par value, where is it held, and must it remain on deposit? | This is the basic funding requirement for federal-credit-union membership. |
| Eligibility and identity proof | Which documents or electronic checks are accepted for your route? | Missing proof can delay or stop an application. |
| Fees and balances | What are the opening, monthly, transaction, and service fees? | A low share amount does not mean the overall account is free. |
| Application method | Can you apply online, by phone, by mail, or in a branch? | The channel changes what you need to submit and how quickly issues are resolved. |
| Charter and insurance | Is it federal or state chartered, and what insurance disclosures apply? | Charter and insurance status affect the governing information you should read. |
If a cell cannot be confirmed from a current disclosure or a direct answer from the institution, mark it “not stated” and follow up rather than guessing.

Common problems and how to resolve them
The website says “open to the public,” but you are unsure you qualify
Ask for the full field-of-membership description and the geographic or organizational limits. “Open to the public” may describe broad access within a defined community, not unlimited national eligibility.
Your employer or association is not listed
Do not infer eligibility from a similar name. Ask whether the organization is covered under a broader category, whether a family or household route applies, or whether another credit union serves your group.
You have a family connection but cannot prove it
Ask which relationships the credit union recognizes and what evidence it accepts. The family or household example in the NCUA guide is a possible route, not a universal rule.

The application is rejected or placed on hold
Request the specific missing information or the eligibility category the reviewer could not verify. Correct inconsistent names or addresses, submit the requested evidence through the approved channel, and ask whether you may reapply after resolving the issue. If the institution determines that you are outside its field of membership, look for another credit union rather than repeatedly submitting the same application.
The required share amount is unclear
Ask for the current account agreement or fee schedule and the exact par value. For a federal credit union, one share must be deposited and maintained, but the amount is set by that institution.
After you become a member
Save the membership and share-account disclosures, confirm that the share posted, and learn how the institution communicates changes. Before opening additional products, check their separate eligibility, balance, fee, and underwriting terms. Keep your address, email, and employment or association information current if the credit union uses them for membership verification.
If you move, change jobs, leave an association, or your qualifying family relationship changes, ask whether your existing membership continues and what rules apply to new products. Do not close the required share account until you understand the effect on membership and any linked accounts.
