The simplest route is to buy a low-cost index mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that explicitly tracks the Nifty 50 or SENSEX. Choose the benchmark first, then compare the scheme’s total expense ratio (TER), tracking error or tracking difference, fund size and— for an ETF—trading liquidity and all transaction charges. Index funds are purchased from a mutual-fund platform at the next applicable net asset value (NAV); ETFs are bought and sold on an exchange through a trading and demat account.
Both products remain equity investments. Indexing can make portfolio construction and costs easier to understand, but it does not prevent the underlying market from falling. Tax treatment is date-sensitive in India, so classify the sale correctly and check the current Income Tax Department rules for your assessment year before redeeming.

What you are actually buying
An index product does not try to select tomorrow’s winning shares. It is designed to hold the securities in a published index, in approximately the index’s weights, so that its return follows the benchmark after expenses and implementation differences.
Nifty 50
The Nifty 50 is the National Stock Exchange’s diversified 50-stock index. It represents 13 sectors and is used as a benchmark for portfolios, derivatives and index funds. A Nifty 50 scheme should identify its benchmark clearly in its offer documents and periodic disclosures. Check whether the stated benchmark is the price-return index or the total-return version, where that information is disclosed; dividends are treated differently in those two versions.

SENSEX
SENSEX is a BSE index calculated with the free-float market-capitalisation methodology. Free-float weighting uses the portion of each company’s shares available for public trading rather than every share issued by the company. A SENSEX fund therefore follows a different basket and weighting process from a Nifty 50 fund, even though the two indexes are broad large-company Indian equity benchmarks.
Why the choice of benchmark matters
You are choosing exposure to an index, not merely a fund label. Two schemes with similar names can have different benchmarks, plans, tracking records and costs. Read the scheme’s benchmark line, index version, investment objective and portfolio disclosure before placing an order.
Index mutual fund or ETF?
Both vehicles seek to replicate an index, but the way you buy, price and sell them is different.

| How it trades | You submit a purchase or redemption to the fund platform. The transaction is processed at the applicable NAV, subject to the scheme’s cut-off and settlement rules. | You place an order on a stock exchange during market hours. The price changes with trading and can be above or below the latest indicative value. |
| Account needed | A mutual-fund account or platform with completed KYC. A demat account is generally not required for a conventional index-fund purchase. | A trading account linked to a demat account, plus completed KYC. |
| Recurring investing | Regular contributions can be set up through the platform’s systematic-investment facility when the scheme supports it. | You must place exchange orders for whole units; an automatic monthly purchase depends on the broker’s facilities and the ETF’s trading conditions. |
| Ongoing fund cost | TER is deducted within the NAV. AMFI requires TER disclosure each day. | TER is also deducted within the ETF’s value, while your actual result additionally depends on the buy-sell spread and execution price. |
| Trading costs | There is no exchange bid-ask spread for your order, although the scheme has its own operating and transaction expenses. | Brokerage, exchange and other applicable charges, demat costs and the bid-ask spread may apply. SEBI specifically notes that brokerage and demat charges can be payable. |
| Minimum purchase | Determined by the scheme and platform. Fractional units may be possible through the platform’s NAV-based process. | ETFs cannot be bought in fractions; you purchase whole units at the quoted market price. |
| Liquidity consideration | Redemption is handled by the fund according to its scheme rules and NAV process. | Your ability to enter or exit at a fair price depends on trading volume, spread and available bids and offers. |
When an index fund is usually the easier implementation
An index fund is straightforward if you want to invest a fixed amount periodically, do not want to watch market quotes, or do not already maintain a demat account. You transact at NAV rather than trying to choose an intraday price. Compare direct and regular plans, their TERs and the service arrangement shown by the fund platform or asset-management company.
When an ETF can be useful
An ETF can suit an investor who already has a trading and demat account and wants exchange-hour control over the order. That control comes with responsibilities: check the quote, spread, average volume and indicative NAV before trading, and account for brokerage, demat and other charges. A low TER alone does not guarantee a low total cost if the spread is wide or the order is large relative to the available liquidity.

A selection checklist before you invest
Use the following sequence rather than choosing solely from a recent-return ranking.
1. Confirm the target index
- Decide whether you want the Nifty 50 or SENSEX exposure.
- Read the scheme name, investment objective and benchmark disclosure to ensure the product actually tracks that index.
- Note whether the benchmark is a total-return version where disclosed.
2. Compare replication and costs
- Record the TER. AMFI explains that TER covers operating, transaction, management, registrar, custodian and audit expenses and is reflected in the daily NAV.
- Check tracking error or tracking difference over multiple periods, not only the latest month or year. Lower tracking error generally indicates that the product has stayed closer to its benchmark.
- Look for explanations of cash balances, corporate actions, index rebalances, constituent changes and investor flows, all of which can make a fund’s return differ from the index.
3. Check scale and administration
- Review fund size, portfolio disclosure frequency, dealing cut-offs, redemption terms and customer-service details in the asset-management company and AMFI materials.
- For an ETF, add the exchange ticker, average trading volume, typical bid-ask spread and availability of indicative NAV information to your checklist.
4. Calculate the all-in cost
For an index fund, consider the TER and any platform or transaction charge shown before you invest. For an ETF, combine the TER with the spread, brokerage, exchange charges, demat charges and the price impact of your order. A scheme with the lowest headline TER can still be more expensive to trade.

How to invest, step by step
Step 1: Set the purpose, horizon and risk capacity
Decide what the money is for and when you may need it. Keep emergency cash and near-term obligations separate from an equity allocation. The Nifty 50 and SENSEX can both decline, so your contribution schedule should be affordable even during a prolonged market fall.
Step 2: Choose Nifty 50 or SENSEX
There is no need to own both solely because the names are different. Compare their index methodologies, constituent exposure and the diversification you want. If you do select both, understand that large Indian companies can appear in each, so the combination may overlap substantially.
Step 3: Complete KYC and use regulated infrastructure
Complete the required KYC and invest through a SEBI-regulated mutual-fund platform or broker. Use the exact legal name and plan of the scheme you researched; similarly named products are not interchangeable.

Step 4: Shortlist a fund or ETF
- Write down the benchmark and index version.
- Compare TER and the available tracking-error or tracking-difference history.
- Review fund size, portfolio disclosure and service information.
- If it is an ETF, verify the ticker, recent volume, spread, indicative NAV and every charge that your broker and demat provider will apply.
Step 5: Place an index-fund order
- Select the exact scheme and plan on the mutual-fund platform.
- Enter either a one-time amount or a recurring contribution that fits your cash flow and risk capacity.
- Review the applicable cut-off, NAV and settlement information before confirming.
- Save the confirmation and monitor units and NAV in your account statement.
Step 6: Place an ETF order
- Search the verified exchange ticker in your broker’s order screen.
- Look at the current bid, offer, traded volume and indicative NAV information.
- Use an order type and size that reflects the available liquidity; avoid assuming that the last traded price is always an executable price.
- Confirm brokerage, exchange, demat and other charges, then submit the order for whole units.
- Check the executed price and quantity in the contract note and demat account.
Step 7: Keep contributions and reviews disciplined
Automate a suitable index-fund contribution where available, or establish a repeatable ETF process. Review the product periodically for benchmark changes, TER, tracking difference, liquidity and operational changes. A review is not a reason to trade every time the market moves.
Understanding TER, tracking error and tracking difference
What TER pays for
The total expense ratio is the recurring operating cost charged to the scheme. AMFI states that it includes operating, transaction, management, registrar, custodian and audit expenses. It is deducted through the NAV, so you do not normally receive a separate bill; the NAV you see is after those expenses.
What tracking error measures
SEBI’s investor explanation defines tracking error as the difference between the returns of a portfolio, such as a mutual fund or ETF, and its benchmark index. NSE describes it as the annualised standard deviation of the difference between fund and index returns. A smaller figure generally means more consistent replication, but it does not mean the investment is safer or less volatile than the index.
Why returns diverge from the index
Expenses are only one source of divergence. NSE identifies transaction costs, cash held for subscriptions and redemptions, corporate actions, changes in index constituents and investor flows as additional causes. An ETF also introduces the market spread and execution price you receive. Compare tracking results over comparable periods and read the explanation for unusual deviations.
| Check | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| TER | The recurring scheme expenses deducted through NAV. | Your exact ETF execution cost or the future return of the index. |
| Tracking error | How variable the fund-to-index return difference has been. | Whether the underlying equity market will rise or fall. |
| Tracking difference | The realised gap between a product’s return and its benchmark over a stated period. | That the same gap will persist in the future. |
| ETF spread and volume | How easily an exchange order may be filled near the displayed quote. | The fund’s long-term replication quality by themselves. |
Risks you should accept before buying
Market and concentration risk
Both products are equity investments. A broad index can fall sharply when the companies or sectors it contains decline. Diversification across 50 Nifty constituents or the SENSEX basket reduces single-company dependence compared with owning one share, but it does not remove market risk or guarantee a positive return.

Implementation risk
Cash, expenses, rebalancing, corporate actions and trading frictions can leave the product below or above the benchmark for a period. Tracking quality is a management and execution issue, not a promise that the index return will be delivered exactly.
ETF execution risk
An ETF may show a quote that is stale, thinly traded or materially different from indicative value. A wide spread increases the cost of entering or exiting. Whole-unit orders can also leave a small amount of cash uninvested when your contribution does not match the unit price.
Behavioural risk
Frequent switching after a fall can turn a temporary market decline into a realised loss. Choose an amount and horizon you can maintain, and define in advance when a review is warranted—such as a persistent tracking problem or a change in your financial objective.

The Income Tax Department’s current individual-tax table lists a 20% short-term capital-gains rate under section 111A for qualifying transfers of equity shares and equity-oriented mutual-fund units made on or after 23 July 2024. This is not a blanket rate for every sale: confirm that your index-fund or ETF units and transaction meet the section’s conditions, and account for any applicable surcharge and cess.

Long-term gains
Section 112A governs qualifying long-term gains on equity shares and equity-oriented fund units. The statutory threshold and rate can change, so use the Income Tax Department’s table for the relevant assessment year and your facts rather than relying on an old calculator or article.
A practical tax calculation workflow
- Identify each lot’s purchase date and cost, including any charges that the tax rules allow you to include.
- Determine whether the transfer is short-term or long-term under the rules that apply to that security and date.
- Calculate the gain or loss from the sale proceeds and the allowable cost for that lot.
- Apply section 111A or section 112A only if the transaction qualifies, then add the applicable surcharge and cess.
- Retain statements and consult a qualified tax professional when facts are unusual, losses are being set off, or your residency or tax status is complex.
Which route fits common situations?
You invest a fixed amount each month
An index mutual fund is usually operationally simpler because the platform can process a recurring amount at NAV and you do not need to manage an exchange order or whole-unit constraint. Still compare the scheme’s TER and tracking record before starting.
You already trade and hold securities in demat
An ETF may be convenient if its ticker is liquid and the spread is reasonable for your order size. Include all brokerage, demat and exchange costs in the comparison rather than selecting on TER alone.
You want the fewest moving parts
Choose one clearly identified benchmark and one well-understood implementation, document your contribution plan and review it on a set schedule. Owning several nearly identical products can add administration without materially changing your exposure.
You are deciding between Nifty 50 and SENSEX
Start with the index methodology and the exposure you want, then compare available products on replication quality and cost. The index label is the first decision; the fund or ETF’s implementation determines how closely your result follows it.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes and fixes
- Buying the wrong benchmark: Recheck the scheme’s benchmark and index version on the official disclosure before confirming the order.
- Choosing only by the lowest TER: Add tracking difference, trading spread and other transaction costs to the comparison.
- Ignoring ETF liquidity: Review volume, bid-ask spread and indicative NAV before each sizeable order.
- Assuming index investing is risk-free: Treat the product as equity exposure and match the allocation to your ability to tolerate losses.
- Using an outdated tax rate: Check the transfer date and current Income Tax Department table; the 20% section 111A rate cited above applies to qualifying transfers on or after 23 July 2024.
- Trading because of short-term noise: Use a written contribution and review rule instead of reacting to every price move.
A maintenance checklist
- Once or twice a year, confirm that the benchmark and index version still match your objective.
- Review TER, tracking error or tracking difference and the fund’s explanation for any widening gap.
- For ETFs, check current liquidity and the costs charged by your broker and demat provider.
- Keep statements, contract notes and lot-level purchase information for tax reporting.
- Reassess the allocation when your time horizon, cash needs or risk capacity changes—not merely when the index is up or down.
