How to Invest in Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC) From the U.S.

For direct exposure from a U.S. brokerage account, search for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s New York Stock Exchange American Depositary Share under ticker TSM. TSMC’s ordinary shares trade in Taiwan under ticker 2330; buying TSM gives you a depositary security rather than a direct Taiwan Stock Exchange trade. One TSM ADS represents five ordinary shares. Before placing an order, compare market access, currency and trading charges, depositary fees, Taiwan dividend withholding, U.S. tax treatment and the risk of concentrating your portfolio in one semiconductor company.

The two tickers: TSM in New York and 2330 in Taiwan

TSMC has two relevant securities for an investor deciding how to gain exposure:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • TSM: TSMC’s American Depositary Shares (ADSs) listed on the New York Stock Exchange. TSMC says these ADSs began trading on the NYSE in 1997.
  • 2330: TSMC’s ordinary shares listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.

An ADS is a depositary security representing ordinary shares held through a depositary arrangement. One TSM ADS represents five ordinary shares. When you buy TSM, your order is for the NYSE-listed depositary security; it is not an order sent directly to Taiwan’s exchange.

The practical choice is usually determined first by your brokerage account. Most U.S. investors who want the simplest dollar-denominated route will investigate TSM. Buying 2330 requires a brokerage service that accepts Taiwan-market orders and handles the related currency conversion, market access and documentation.

How to buy TSM through a U.S. brokerage

The exact screens differ by brokerage, but the decision sequence is broadly the same.

  1. Confirm that the account can trade the NYSE. A standard U.S. brokerage account may support TSM, but availability, order types, fractional-share rules and account eligibility are account-specific. Check the security’s trading status and the broker’s current terms before funding an order.
  2. Search the ticker, not only the company name. Enter TSM and verify that the result identifies Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and the NYSE-listed ADS. Do not assume that a result labeled 2330 is the same tradable instrument; 2330 is the Taiwan-listed ordinary share.
  3. Review the quote and the order details. Check the displayed price, bid-ask spread, market status and any currency or foreign-security notices. A market order prioritizes execution at available prices; a limit order sets the highest price you will pay for a buy order, but it may not execute.
  4. Choose the position size deliberately. Decide how much of your portfolio can reasonably be exposed to one company and one semiconductor manufacturer. Your broker’s position-sizing or recurring-investment tools do not remove the underlying concentration risk.
  5. Submit and verify the order. Before sending it, review the estimated trade value, commissions, regulatory charges and any account-specific fee disclosure. After submission, confirm whether the order is filled, partially filled, canceled or still open.
  6. Save confirmations and tax records. Keep the trade confirmation, cost basis, dividend statements and any disclosure of depositary or foreign-tax charges. Your broker’s year-end tax forms may not answer every question about foreign withholding or the treatment of an ADS, so retain the original records.

These steps explain access, not whether TSM is attractively valued. A company can be financially strong while its stock price still produces a poor return if you pay too much, buy at an unsuitable time or hold more risk than your plan allows.

When buying 2330 may be possible from the U.S.

Direct trading of 2330 requires an account with Taiwan-market access. Ask the brokerage, in writing if necessary, whether it supports:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Orders for Taiwan Stock Exchange securities, including ticker 2330;
  • New Taiwan dollar conversion and the exchange rate used for your transaction;
  • Foreign-market commissions, custody charges, local taxes and other pass-through costs;
  • Dividend collection, tax documentation and corporate-action processing for Taiwan-listed shares; and
  • Transfers, sales and repatriation of proceeds back to U.S. dollars.

Available company filings do not establish a particular broker’s charges or service availability. Treat every fee schedule and eligibility statement as time-sensitive. An account that can buy U.S.-listed TSM may not be able to buy 2330, and an account that supports 2330 may present a more complicated currency and tax workflow.

What differs between TSM and 2330

Factor TSM ADS 2330 ordinary share
Listing New York Stock Exchange Taiwan Stock Exchange
Trading symbol TSM 2330
Security form American Depositary Share representing five ordinary shares Ordinary share
Typical quote currency U.S. dollars on the NYSE New Taiwan dollars on the Taiwan exchange
Account requirement A brokerage account that permits the NYSE security A brokerage account with Taiwan-market capability
Depositary structure Yes; the ADS arrangement can involve depositary service fees No equivalent ADS fee structure for a direct ordinary-share trade
Costs to investigate Broker trading charges, spread, possible ADS fees and Taiwan dividend withholding Broker trading and custody charges, currency conversion, Taiwan-market fees and dividend withholding

The two instruments are linked economically, but their quoted prices will not be identical because an ADS represents five ordinary shares and the exchange rate, market hours, liquidity and local costs differ. Compare the total cost and the account’s operational convenience rather than assuming that one ticker is automatically cheaper.

Fees you can encounter

Depositary service fees on TSM

TSMC’s 2025 Form 20-F states that ADS holders may pay depositary service fees. The listed ceilings are up to US$0.05 per ADS issued and up to US$0.05 per ADS canceled. Brokers commonly pay certain issuance or cancellation fees for clients and may pass those costs through to the client. Your actual charge depends on the broker, the account agreement and the transaction, so the ceiling is not a promise that every trade will incur exactly US$0.05.

Brokerage and market charges

Trading commissions, regulatory charges, custody fees, foreign-market levies and currency-conversion spreads vary by provider. The available company filings do not establish a universal U.S. fee schedule. Read the current fee table for the account you will use, including charges that may appear when a dividend is processed rather than when the shares are purchased.

Currency effects

TSM trades in U.S. dollars, but TSMC’s operations, ordinary shares and dividends are linked to Taiwan and the New Taiwan dollar. The ADS price can therefore move because of the company’s results, market sentiment, the exchange rate and changes in the value investors assign to Taiwan-linked assets. Buying 2330 adds a more visible conversion step, but owning TSM does not eliminate currency exposure from the underlying business.

Dividends and Taiwan withholding tax

TSMC’s investor FAQ states: TSMC intends to maintain a sustainable quarterly cash dividend, and to distribute the cash dividend each year at a level not lower than the year before. This is a stated company policy, not a guarantee that a future board will approve a specific amount or that an investor will earn a particular return.

The same FAQ states that dividends distributed to holders of TSMC’s ADSs are subject to R.O.C. withholding tax at 21%. “R.O.C.” refers to the Republic of China, the company’s designation for Taiwan. The withholding is taken at source before the net dividend reaches the investor’s account.

For a specific historical example, TSMC listed an ex-dividend date of September 16, 2026, and a distribution date of October 8, 2026, for its 1Q26 distribution. The company reported US$1.0962510 per ADR before at-source withholding and US$0.8660380 per ADR after that withholding. Those figures describe that distribution only; they are not a forecast of future payments.

Dividend amounts can also be affected by the ADS-to-ordinary-share ratio, exchange rates, the company’s declared amount, depositary processing and account-level charges. Check each dividend notice instead of extrapolating from one payment.

U.S. tax questions to resolve before trading

Buying TSM creates both an investment decision and a tax-reporting question. TSMC’s SEC-filed 2025 Form 20-F describes U.S. federal tax consequences, including different treatment for distributions and gains and the relevance of possible passive foreign investment company (PFIC) classification. The correct treatment depends on your facts, the account type, holding period and applicable rules.

  • Foreign withholding is not the whole U.S. tax answer. The 21% Taiwan withholding reported by TSMC is a source-country deduction. Whether any amount can be claimed as a U.S. foreign-tax credit, and how, depends on the investor’s circumstances and current tax rules. Do not assume the withheld amount is automatically or fully recoverable.
  • Dividends and sale proceeds are different events. A dividend distribution and a gain or loss when you sell can have different U.S. tax treatment. Keep the gross distribution, withholding amount and net amount shown on your statement.
  • Account type matters. Taxable brokerage accounts, individual retirement accounts and other structures can produce different reporting obligations. Your broker’s form may not capture every issue relevant to a foreign security.
  • PFIC analysis may be relevant. The Form 20-F discusses PFIC considerations. A tax professional can determine whether the rules apply to your holding and which elections or forms, if any, are required.

Use the latest issuer filing and your broker’s year-end statements, then consult a qualified tax adviser who can apply the rules to your residence, filing status and account. This article cannot determine your personal tax result.

What TSMC’s recent results tell you—and what they do not

TSMC’s 2025 annual report provides historical context, not a valuation verdict or a promise of continued growth. It reported the following figures:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Measure 2025 reported amount How to read it
Consolidated revenue US$122.42 billion Reported in U.S. dollars by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited for 2025
Net income US$55.21 billion Reported in U.S. dollars for 2025
Consolidated revenue NT$3,809.05 billion Reported in New Taiwan dollars for 2025
Net income attributable to shareholders of the parent NT$1,717.88 billion Different currency and accounting line item from the U.S.-dollar net-income figure
Total cash dividend payments NT$18.0 per ordinary share 2025 total for an ordinary share, not a forecast for future years

Do not add or compare the U.S.-dollar and New Taiwan dollar rows as though they were duplicate measures in one currency. The figures also do not establish that TSM is fairly valued. To assess valuation, you would need a current share price, exchange rate, earnings expectations, balance-sheet information and a method appropriate to semiconductor manufacturing.

Arizona expansion and the limits of company plans

TSMC’s 2025 annual report said its first Arizona fab entered high-volume production in the fourth quarter of 2024. The report expected the second fab to enter high-volume manufacturing in the second half of 2027 and said construction of the third fab began in 2025.

Those dates are company expectations stated in the annual report, not guaranteed completion or production dates. Construction schedules, permitting, equipment installation, customer demand, labor, costs and technology qualification can change. Treat the Arizona program as a business development and execution factor to monitor, not as a certain future source of returns.

Risks of owning one Taiwan-linked semiconductor company

Company and execution risk

TSMC’s results depend on demand for the products made by its customers, the company’s ability to manufacture advanced and mature technologies, capital spending, operating costs and successful execution of expansion plans. A strong past year does not remove the possibility of weaker future results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Semiconductor-cycle risk

Semiconductor demand can change quickly as customers adjust inventories, product launches shift and end markets strengthen or weaken. Revenue, margins and investor expectations can move in different directions during a cycle.

Geopolitical and economic risk

TSMC’s annual report warns that actual results can differ materially from forward-looking statements and identifies risks involving its business, financial markets and geopolitical, economic and financial conditions. An investor in TSM is exposed to conditions affecting Taiwan-linked operations and international technology supply chains.

Foreign-exchange risk

The company reports in multiple currencies and has exposure to financial-market risks, including foreign-exchange rates. Even if the ADS is quoted in U.S. dollars, exchange-rate changes can affect the value of the underlying shares, dividends and reported results for a U.S. investor.

Single-stock concentration

TSM gives direct exposure to one issuer. It does not automatically diversify you across chip designers, equipment makers, memory producers, software companies or other industries. A position can be reasonable in size yet still be unsuitable if your other assets already depend on the same technology cycle or region.

TSM versus a semiconductor-sector ETF

An investor who wants broader semiconductor exposure can research the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH), a fund listed on Nasdaq. SMH is a different product from TSM: it owns a portfolio selected under the fund’s mandate rather than giving you a direct claim on one company’s shares.

Question TSM ADS Semiconductor ETF such as SMH
Exposure One company, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company A fund portfolio of semiconductor-related holdings
Company-specific upside and downside High; your result is closely tied to TSMC Spread across holdings, but still tied to the semiconductor industry
Fund expenses No ETF expense ratio, though brokerage and depositary costs can apply Fund-level expenses and trading costs apply; current figures must be checked in the prospectus
Current holdings and TSM weight Not applicable Not stated here; verify the latest holdings and weight before investing
Currency and issuer exposure Direct Taiwan-linked company exposure through a U.S.-listed ADS Depends on the fund’s current holdings, mandate and implementation

Do not treat an ETF as a cash substitute or as guaranteed diversification across the entire stock market. Industry funds can remain highly concentrated in one sector, and their holdings, weights and expenses change. Read the latest prospectus and holdings file before comparing SMH with a direct TSM position.

A decision framework before placing an order

Choose TSM when direct company exposure is intentional

TSM may fit an investor who specifically wants one-company exposure, accepts the volatility of a semiconductor manufacturer and is comfortable tracking Taiwan-related business, currency and geopolitical risks. That is a portfolio decision, not merely a ticker lookup.

Investigate 2330 when market access justifies the extra complexity

Direct ordinary shares can be relevant when your account already supports Taiwan trading and you understand the currency, custody, local-market and tax processes. Compare the all-in cost and administrative workload with the NYSE ADS before choosing it solely because its local ticker is familiar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider a sector fund when concentration is the main concern

A semiconductor ETF can spread issuer-specific risk across a group of companies, but it does not remove semiconductor-cycle, valuation, market or fund-structure risk. Verify the fund’s current mandate, holdings, expense ratio and tax documents.

Use position size as a risk control

Rather than starting with a target share count, set a maximum portfolio percentage consistent with your time horizon, emergency savings, debt obligations and ability to tolerate losses. Recheck that percentage after price changes; a position can become oversized without any new purchase.

What to verify before and after buying

  • Confirm the exact security: TSM ADS on the NYSE or 2330 ordinary shares in Taiwan.
  • Read the current brokerage fee schedule, currency-conversion terms and foreign-security disclosures.
  • Check whether depositary service fees can be passed through to your account.
  • Record the gross dividend, 21% Taiwan withholding stated by TSMC for ADS dividends, net payment and any additional account charge.
  • Review the latest TSMC annual report, Form 20-F and dividend notice for updated results, risks and dates.
  • For an ETF comparison, verify the latest prospectus, holdings, expense ratio and tax information instead of relying on an older fund description.
  • Ask a tax adviser how the ADS, foreign withholding and any PFIC considerations apply to your account.

Bottom line

The straightforward U.S. route to direct TSMC exposure is the NYSE-listed ADS under ticker TSM. Ticker 2330 is the Taiwan-listed ordinary share and requires a brokerage account with Taiwan-market capabilities. One ADS represents five ordinary shares, and the ADS route can involve depositary fees in addition to ordinary trading costs. TSMC reports 21% Taiwan withholding on ADS dividends, while your final U.S. tax treatment depends on your personal facts. Use the company’s dated financial results and Arizona plans as context, not as a valuation signal or guarantee, and weigh single-stock, semiconductor-cycle, geopolitical and currency risks before deciding how much—if any—to allocate.
