The practical answer is to treat semiconductors as a value chain, not as an AI-only trade. Keep a broad-market or multi-sector portfolio as your core, then make semiconductor exposure a measured satellite allocation. Within that satellite, examine whether you own a mix of chip designers, foundries, memory producers, analog and networking companies, equipment makers, and electronic-component businesses—or whether one AI-linked company or business model drives nearly all of the result.
No single semiconductor percentage is suitable for every investor. The appropriate size depends on your existing holdings, time horizon, liquidity needs, and ability to tolerate a sharp industry drawdown. Diversifying across several semiconductor companies can reduce single-company risk, but it does not turn a narrowly focused industry fund into a diversified portfolio.

What counts as semiconductor exposure?
Semiconductor investing covers much more than the companies best known for AI accelerators. A semiconductor business may design chips, manufacture them in its own plants, operate a contract foundry, produce memory, supply analog or networking components, or sell the specialized equipment and materials needed to make wafers.

It also describes related electronic-component and equipment businesses. That broad definition is useful when you are trying to avoid an AI-only portfolio: the fund’s name may say “semiconductor,” while its actual holdings can span several parts of the production chain.

The main roles in the value chain
| Role | What the company provides | How it can diversify an AI-heavy position | Distinct risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chip designers and fabless firms | Architectures and chip designs manufactured by another company | May include processors for phones, cars, industrial systems, networking, or data centers rather than only AI accelerators | Fast product cycles, customer concentration, and valuation sensitivity |
| Foundries and integrated manufacturers | Wafer fabrication for their own products or for outside designers | Adds manufacturing exposure instead of another design business | Very high capital requirements, utilization swings, and geopolitical exposure |
| Memory producers | Commodity and specialized memory used across servers, devices, and industrial equipment | Performance can be driven by memory supply and pricing cycles rather than one AI-platform franchise | Pronounced boom-and-bust pricing and inventory cycles |
| Analog and electronic-component companies | Power-management, sensing, connectivity, and other components used in many end markets | Broadens demand beyond large-scale AI data centers | Industrial and automotive slowdowns can reduce orders |
| Networking and communications suppliers | Connectivity chips and systems that move data between devices and facilities | Adds a different exposure to data infrastructure than accelerator designers | Customer concentration, technology transitions, and capital-spending cycles |
| Semiconductor-equipment companies | Tools used to deposit, etch, inspect, test, and package chips | Benefits from fabrication investment across many chip categories, not just one chip designer | Orders can be delayed abruptly when manufacturers cut capital spending |
These categories are not mutually exclusive. A single company can design chips and operate factories, or sell several types of components. Use the company’s revenue mix and the fund’s classification rules rather than relying only on a ticker or marketing label.
Why a semiconductor ETF can still leave you concentrated
Owning an ETF spreads your money across the securities in its portfolio, but it may not spread risk across the economy. Investor.gov puts the limitation plainly: “But a mutual fund or ETF won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).” The same guidance says that spreading investments across asset classes and industry sectors can help one area offset weakness in another, and that investors should inspect holdings and costs.
A sector ETF can therefore reduce the damage from one company’s product failure while leaving you exposed to a common semiconductor shock. A downturn in electronics demand, a disruption in wafer supply, export restrictions, or a broad cut in factory investment can affect many holdings at once. If you already own large technology positions in a broad-market fund, buying a semiconductor ETF may also increase your exposure to the same companies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMarket-cap weighting can amplify the leading AI names
In a market-cap-weighted index, companies with the greatest market value receive the largest positions. When a few AI-linked companies rise faster than the rest of the industry, they occupy a growing share of the fund. That can maximize exposure to established winners, but it also means one company or theme can dominate your outcome.
Equal and capped methods spread weight differently
An equal-weight index assigns similar starting weights to its constituents. A capped index limits the largest position or group of positions. Both methods can reduce single-company dominance, but they may underweight the largest winners, produce different returns from a market-cap index, and require more frequent rebalancing. Neither method guarantees a higher return or lower volatility.

Start with your whole portfolio, not a ticker
Before selecting a fund or individual stocks, map every source of semiconductor exposure. Include direct holdings, broad-market and technology funds, employer stock, retirement accounts, and concentrated positions created by past gains. A fund can appear diversified in isolation while duplicating your largest existing holding.
- List current positions. Record each holding, its market value, and the percentage of your investable assets it represents.
- Identify indirect exposure. Open the latest holdings files for broad-market, technology, and thematic funds. Note semiconductor companies that appear among their largest positions.
- Separate financial goals. Keep emergency cash and money needed for near-term spending outside a volatile industry allocation.
- Set a risk boundary. Decide how much loss you could withstand without selling in panic. The answer should reflect income stability, debt, liquidity, and investment horizon—not a generic rule.
- Choose a satellite size. Add semiconductor exposure only after the broad-market or multi-sector core is in place. Increase it gradually if you want to manage timing risk.
This process does not produce a universal percentage. It produces a position size that is coherent with the portfolio you actually own.
Choose between an ETF and individual semiconductor stocks
An ETF is usually the simpler way to obtain several value-chain roles at once. Individual stocks give you more control over which businesses you own, but they demand company-level research and leave you responsible for maintaining diversification.
| Approach | What you control | Where concentration can hide | Work required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad semiconductor ETF | Fund methodology, fees, and overall sleeve size | Top holdings, one dominant business model, or one country | Review the prospectus and holdings periodically |
| Several role-specific ETFs | Exposure to designers, memory, equipment, or other groups | Large overlapping holdings can make two funds behave like one | Compare holdings, index rules, and rebalancing schedules |
| Individual-stock basket | Each company, role, geography, and position weight | Your largest positions and correlated end markets | Analyze financial statements, valuation, execution, and news |
| Active fund | Manager’s security selection and portfolio limits | Manager may still favor the same AI leaders or style exposures | Read the mandate, turnover, holdings, and reporting history |
Do not assume that two ETFs diversify each other because they have different names. Compare their top holdings and index methodologies. If the same companies account for most of both portfolios, adding the second fund may add fees without adding much risk diversification.
How to compare semiconductor ETFs
Use the current prospectus, index document, holdings file, and trading data. Fund characteristics change through rebalancing, corporate actions, and market movements, so a historical fact is not a substitute for the latest disclosure.

1. Business-model breadth
Count how many holdings are designers, foundries, memory companies, analog or networking suppliers, equipment makers, and electronic-component businesses. A fund that owns many companies but almost all of them are accelerator designers is narrower than one with fewer names spread across the chain.

2. Top holding and top-ten weight
Record the largest position and the combined weight of the ten largest positions. Compare those figures with your direct holdings and other funds. A low number of holdings does not automatically mean poor diversification, and a high number does not guarantee broad exposure; the distribution of weights matters.
3. Index construction
Determine whether the index is market-cap weighted, equal weighted, capped, sampled, or actively managed. Read the rebalancing frequency and any rules that limit one company, industry group, or country. The methodology tells you how concentration will change after a large price move.
4. Geographic and currency exposure
Check where the companies are incorporated, where they generate revenue, and in which currency the fund trades. A U.S.-listed ETF can own companies headquartered elsewhere. Geographic diversification may reduce dependence on one market, but it introduces political, regulatory, currency, and settlement risks.
5. Expense ratio and tracking difference
The expense ratio is the stated annual operating cost. Tracking difference shows how the fund actually performed relative to its index after fees, trading costs, withholding taxes, and portfolio frictions. Consider both; a low headline fee does not guarantee close index tracking.

6. Liquidity and trading spread
Check average trading volume and the bid-ask spread before placing an order. A liquid fund generally makes it easier to enter or exit near its quoted value. Use limit orders when the spread is wide or markets are moving quickly.
7. Premium or discount to net asset value
ETF shares fluctuate during the trading day and can trade above or below net asset value, as State Street warns in its fund disclosures. Review the fund’s premium-and-discount history, especially during market stress, rather than assuming the exchange price always equals the value of the underlying holdings.
8. Tax characteristics
In a taxable account, review distributions, turnover, and the tax treatment that applies in your country. In a retirement account, tax deferral may change the relative importance of distributions, but it does not remove market or concentration risk.

Several dated figures illustrate why semiconductor exposure requires a risk discussion rather than a simple growth narrative.
| Published figure | Date and source | Portfolio implication |
|---|---|---|
| More than 40% of global semiconductor sales represented industry research and development plus capital expenditure | 2023 report from the Semiconductor Industry Association and Boston Consulting Group | The industry is unusually capital- and innovation-intensive; demand weakness can pressure both profits and factory investment |
| 40 stocks in the S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index | State Street/SPDR prospectus; index composition as of July 31, 2025 | A fund can hold dozens of companies and still remain a single-sector allocation |
| At least 80% of total assets invested in securities comprising the index | State Street/SPDR 2025 prospectus | The stated policy keeps the fund closely tied to its semiconductor index rather than functioning as a broad-market fund |
The 40-stock example is not a recommendation or a permanent count. Holdings and rules can change, so verify the current prospectus before investing.

Understand the risks that travel across the whole sector
Demand cycles
Chip demand moves with consumer electronics, autos, industrial equipment, communications infrastructure, and data-center budgets. Customers may reduce orders quickly after inventories build, even when long-term chip use is growing.
Capital intensity
Factories and equipment require large, continuing investments. The 2023 industry estimate that research and development plus capital expenditure exceeded 40% of global semiconductor sales demonstrates the scale of that commitment. High fixed costs can magnify both profits in strong periods and losses when utilization falls.
Supply-chain dependence
Production relies on specialized materials, equipment, packaging, testing, logistics, and a limited number of manufacturing locations. A disruption at one point can affect companies that appear unrelated by ticker.
Geopolitical and regulatory exposure
Trade restrictions, export controls, subsidies, sanctions, and tensions around manufacturing hubs can alter which products a company may sell and where it can build capacity. Geographic diversification does not eliminate these risks because the supply chain is globally interconnected.
Valuation and expectation risk
When investors price in years of AI-related growth, even a profitable company can fall if orders, margins, or guidance fail to meet expectations. A diversified basket cannot prevent a sector-wide valuation reset.
How much semiconductor exposure is too much?
There is no authoritative percentage that fits every investor. A suitable allocation depends on the rest of your portfolio, your time horizon, liquidity requirements, and risk capacity. A household whose broad-market fund already has substantial chip exposure has a different starting point from one with no technology holdings.
Use these tests instead of a universal rule:
- Overlap test: After adding the fund, do one or two companies become an outsized share of your total portfolio?
- Drawdown test: Could you continue paying bills and meeting goals if the entire semiconductor sleeve suffered a prolonged decline?
- Income test: Is your salary, employer stock, or business already tied to chip manufacturing, technology, or data centers?
- Time-horizon test: Will you need this money before you can tolerate a full industry cycle?
- Behavior test: Would a sharp fall cause you to abandon a long-term plan?
If the answer to any test is unfavorable, reduce the sleeve, broaden the core, or hold more liquid assets before buying more semiconductor securities.

A practical purchase and review process
- Write an investment policy for the sleeve. State its purpose, maximum size in your portfolio, preferred value-chain roles, and the conditions that would make you rebalance.
- Shortlist funds or stocks. Use an ETF screener or brokerage research page to gather expense ratios, holdings, index methodology, geography, and trading data. Treat the screener as a starting point; verify every figure in the issuer’s current documents.
- Measure overlap. Export the top holdings of each candidate and compare them with your existing funds. Look at combined exposure, not just each fund’s percentage in isolation.
- Select an implementation method. Choose one broad fund, several complementary funds, or a deliberately diversified stock basket. Avoid adding a second product unless it contributes a role or geography you do not already own.
- Place the order carefully. Check the bid-ask spread, market conditions, and premium or discount to net asset value. A limit order can specify the highest price you are willing to pay.
- Review on a schedule. Recheck holdings, weights, fees, index rules, and overlap at least when the fund rebalances or publishes a new prospectus. Rebalance for a predefined reason, not merely because a headline is exciting.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Mistake: treating “semiconductor” as a synonym for AI. Fix: Read the holdings and classify companies by role and end market.
- Mistake: choosing the fund with the most holdings. Fix: Compare top-ten weight, position caps, and business-model breadth.
- Mistake: buying two funds without checking overlap. Fix: Compare the actual top holdings and index methodologies.
- Mistake: assuming a U.S.-listed fund is U.S.-only. Fix: Review company domiciles, revenue geography, and currency exposure.
- Mistake: focusing only on the expense ratio. Fix: Add tracking difference, bid-ask spread, liquidity, taxes, and premium/discount behavior to the comparison.
- Mistake: using a fixed sector percentage copied from someone else. Fix: Size the position after considering your complete portfolio, cash needs, and ability to withstand losses.
- Mistake: assuming industry growth guarantees returns. Fix: Separate long-term demand potential from the price you pay and the cycle you enter.
Bottom line
Invest in semiconductors without overconcentrating in AI by combining a broad-market core with a deliberately sized semiconductor satellite. Select exposure across designers, foundries, memory, analog and networking, equipment, and electronic components; then check top-holding overlap, index construction, geography, costs, liquidity, taxes, and premium-or-discount behavior. Market-cap, equal-weight, and capped approaches each make a different trade-off between exposure to leaders and concentration control. The right allocation is the one your entire portfolio and risk capacity can support—not a percentage detached from your circumstances.
