The simplest way to invest in the quantum-computing theme without selecting individual shares is to use a thematic exchange-traded fund (ETF) that holds a basket of companies. The important qualification is that a fund with “quantum” in its name may also own machine-learning businesses, semiconductor makers, software companies and other technology enablers. Before buying, compare the index definition, current holdings, concentration, annual charge, listing and currency, then confirm that the fund is available in your country and account.
This is educational information, not personalized investment advice. Quantum funds are equity investments: their prices can fall sharply, and commercial adoption of quantum technology is not assured.

What you are actually buying
An ETF pools investors’ money and uses it to hold a portfolio of securities. Buying one share gives you exposure to the fund’s basket rather than to one company. That reduces the company-specific risk of choosing a single stock, but it does not eliminate market risk, technology risk or thematic risk.
Recommended Free Tools
“Quantum ETF” is a marketing description, not a universal definition. Some indexes require a substantial quantum-computing connection; others include businesses that supply chips, materials, cloud services, artificial-intelligence tools or data software. A broad fund can be more diversified while giving you less direct exposure to companies whose primary revenue comes from quantum computing.

For a US investor, QTUM is an established listed route, but its official index covers both quantum computing and machine learning. International investors may encounter UCITS funds such as QANT, WQTM and QNTM, each with its own index, domicile, exchange and eligibility rules.
Funds to investigate
The figures below are issuer-published charges and fund details checked on October 13, 2026. Expense ratios, holdings and product terms can change, so review the latest factsheet and prospectus immediately before trading.
| Fund | Scope and structure | Published annual charge | Availability note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Defiance Quantum ETF (QTUM) | US-listed ETF tracking a BlueStar index covering quantum computing and machine learning; the official page showed 90 holdings. | 0.40% gross expense ratio; the summary prospectus reports 0.40% total annual fund operating expenses. | US listing. Access depends on your broker, country and account type. |
| Defiance Pure Quantum ETF (QTUP) | Narrower quantum-focused strategy. Its holdings page shows positions in quantum-associated companies, with larger individual weights than QTUM in the October 13 snapshot. | 0.77% gross expense ratio on the surfaced fund page. | US fund. Read its prospectus and concentration disclosures before treating it as diversified. |
| iShares Quantum Computing UCITS ETF (QANT) | Tracks the STOXX Global Quantum Computing Index, which weights companies by quantum-theme exposure and rebalances semi-annually. The page reported 30 holdings as of September 9, 2026. | 0.50% total expense ratio. | UK/international issuer page; eligibility varies by country. |
| WisdomTree Quantum Computing UCITS ETF (WQTM) | Tracks the WisdomTree Classiq Quantum Computing UCITS Index. | 0.50% total expense ratio. | International UCITS listing; eligibility varies. |
| VanEck Quantum Computing UCITS ETF (QNTM) | Quantum-computing UCITS theme combining pure-play innovators with larger technology firms; the issuer describes company-weight caps. | 0.55% total expense ratio. | UK/international issuer page; do not assume US availability. |
These are examples for comparison, not recommendations or a ranking. A lower charge does not guarantee better returns, and a narrower theme is not automatically a better expression of the opportunity.
How to choose between a broad and a narrow quantum fund
Broad technology-and-enabler exposure
QTUM illustrates the broad approach. Its index description includes companies involved in quantum computers or computing chips, superconducting materials, applications built on quantum computers, embedded artificial-intelligence chips and data-related software. It also explicitly includes machine learning. This can spread exposure across more established technology businesses, but some holdings may derive little or no current revenue from quantum products.
Narrower quantum exposure
QTUP is presented as a “Pure Quantum” alternative. Its October 13 holdings snapshot had materially larger weights in some quantum-linked names than QTUM. That may make its performance more sensitive to a small number of companies, financing conditions and changes in investor enthusiasm. The 0.77% gross expense ratio is also higher than the published charge for QTUM.

UCITS options
QANT, WQTM and QNTM are UCITS products aimed at international markets. QANT uses a semi-annual rebalance and reported 30 holdings on September 9, 2026. WQTM reported a 0.50% TER and an inception date of August 27, 2025; its fund characteristics were dated August 28, 2026. QNTM reported a 0.55% TER and describes both pure-play innovators and larger technology firms, with company-weight caps. Their labels do not make them interchangeable: index rules, share classes, exchanges, currencies and tax treatment can differ.
A practical decision process
- Confirm legal and account access. Search your broker’s instrument list for the exact ticker, exchange and share class. A US-listed ETF and a UCITS ETF may not be available to the same investor. Check whether your country permits the purchase in your particular account, including retirement or tax-advantaged accounts.
- Define the exposure you want. Decide whether you prefer a broad basket of quantum, machine-learning and enabling technology companies or a narrower portfolio intended to concentrate on quantum businesses. Write this down before looking at recent performance so a short-term price move does not make the decision for you.
- Read the index methodology. Look for the eligibility test, revenue or activity thresholds, liquidity requirements, rebalancing schedule, security caps and treatment of companies with several business lines. The fund name alone cannot tell you how much quantum exposure you receive.
- Inspect live holdings and weights. Download the latest holdings file and identify the largest positions. Ask what percentage of each major holding’s business is plausibly connected to quantum computing. Holdings change, so an old article or launch presentation is not a substitute for the current file.
- Calculate total trading cost. Start with the annual expense ratio or TER, then add your broker’s commission, bid-ask spread, currency-conversion charge and any account fee. QTUM’s prospectus says brokerage commissions and financial-intermediary fees may be additional to fund operating expenses.
- Check trading mechanics. Note the exchange, trading currency, normal market hours, order type and typical spread. A market order can execute at a less favorable price when the underlying securities or the ETF itself are thinly traded. A limit order can control the maximum price you pay, but it may not fill.
- Set a portfolio limit before purchase. Treat the position as risky thematic equity exposure. Decide in advance how much volatility and potential loss you can tolerate, without assuming that quantum adoption will occur on a particular timetable. Do not use an allocation rule from a generic article as a substitute for your own plan.
- Record your reason and review date. Save the fund’s factsheet, prospectus, index rules, purchase price and intended holding period. Review the thesis and the fund documents periodically rather than reacting to every headline.
What each fund’s published information tells you
QTUM: broad scope and a 0.40% charge
QTUM’s official description is unusually important because it spells out the breadth of the strategy. The index seeks liquid global companies associated with quantum computing and machine learning, including hardware, materials, applications, chips and data-related software. The page showed 90 holdings in early October 2026, while the full holdings snapshot dated October 13 included large technology and software firms alongside quantum-associated companies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That structure can reduce dependence on a handful of early-stage quantum specialists, but it also means the fund may behave partly like a broader technology ETF. The 0.40% gross expense ratio is deducted inside the fund and is not normally billed as a separate invoice to you. The prospectus’ warning about commissions and intermediary fees means your all-in cost can still be higher.
QTUP: a higher-cost, more concentrated contrast
QTUP is marketed as a pure-quantum option and carries a published 0.77% gross expense ratio. The October 13 holdings snapshot showed materially larger weights in some quantum-linked names than QTUM. Larger weights can increase the effect of a single company’s earnings, technical setback, capital raise or regulatory event on the ETF’s price. Before buying, read the current prospectus for concentration limits, principal risks and any changes since the surfaced fund page.
QANT: a 30-holding UCITS portfolio
QANT seeks to reflect the STOXX Global Quantum Computing Index. Its methodology weights companies by their quantum-theme exposure and rebalances twice a year. The issuer reported 30 holdings as of September 9, 2026 and a 0.50% TER. Listed risks include rapid technology change, intellectual-property protection, regulation, competition and concentrated sector or country exposure.

Because QANT is presented on a UK/international page, a US reader should not assume that the ticker is tradable in a domestic account. A non-US investor should check the local listing, settlement currency and tax documents rather than relying on a US comparison table.

WQTM: index and date matter more than the label
WQTM tracks the WisdomTree Classiq Quantum Computing UCITS Index. The issuer reported a 0.50% TER, an inception date of August 27, 2025 and fund characteristics dated August 28, 2026. Its relatively recent inception means investors should focus on the written index rules, holdings and liquidity rather than infer a long operating history from the theme’s popularity.
QNTM: capped company weights
QNTM reports a 0.55% TER and describes exposure to pure-play innovators as well as larger technology firms. Its issuer materials call out liquidity, concentration and smaller-company risks and describe company-weight caps. Read the cap percentage and rebalance rules in the current documents: a cap can limit one holding’s influence, but it cannot remove the risks of a falling sector, weak liquidity or an immature technology.
Costs beyond the expense ratio
The annual fund charge is only one line in the cost calculation. A useful comparison separates recurring fund costs from costs created by your transaction.
- Expense ratio or TER: QTUM 0.40%, QANT 0.50%, WQTM 0.50%, QNTM 0.55% and QTUP 0.77% were the published figures checked on October 13, 2026. These charges can change.
- Commission: Your broker may charge a fixed or percentage-based dealing fee. QTUM’s prospectus specifically says brokerage commissions may be additional.
- Bid-ask spread: The difference between the price at which you can buy and sell is a trading cost, even when commission is zero.
- Currency conversion: Buying a fund in a currency different from your cash balance can create a conversion spread or fee. Currency movement can also affect your return when your home currency differs from the fund’s trading currency.
- Intermediary and account fees: Financial-intermediary charges, custody fees or account minimums can apply. Confirm them in your own account schedule.
- Taxes: Dividend withholding, capital-gains rules, reporting requirements and treatment of foreign funds depend on your country, residence and account type. A UCITS label does not make a fund tax-neutral everywhere.
Compare costs over the period you actually expect to hold the fund. A small annual difference can matter over many years, while a wide spread or currency fee can matter immediately on a small trade.

Risks specific to quantum-computing ETFs
Technology and commercialization risk
Quantum computing remains a developing field. A technically promising approach may fail to reach useful scale, or a different architecture may become dominant. Revenue forecasts, product timelines and customer demand can change quickly. No fund structure can guarantee that the underlying technology will become commercially successful.
Concentration risk
Even a fund with many holdings can be concentrated in its largest positions, one country, one exchange or one industry group. Smaller-company funds may have less trading liquidity and greater sensitivity to capital-market conditions.
Equity-market and valuation risk
ETF shares trade like equities. Rising interest rates, recession fears, a technology sell-off or a broad market decline can lower prices even when a company makes technical progress. A popular theme can also become expensive relative to current revenue.
Intellectual-property, regulatory and competitive risk
QANT’s published risk discussion highlights intellectual-property protection, regulation and competition. Patent disputes, export controls, privacy rules, procurement changes or a rival technology can affect several holdings at once.

The ETF may not match the performance of its index exactly because of fees, trading costs, sampling, rebalancing and corporate actions. Rebalancing can force the fund to buy or sell at unfavorable times, especially in less-liquid securities.

Currency, domicile and settlement risk
A fund’s exchange currency is not necessarily the same as the currencies of its holdings or your home currency. Domicile affects legal documents, withholding and investor protections. Settlement conventions and trading hours can differ across markets.
How to place a purchase responsibly
- Open or use a brokerage account that legally permits the selected ETF for your residence and account type.
- Confirm the exact ticker, exchange, currency and share class. Similar names can represent different listings.
- Read the latest key information document, prospectus, holdings file and fee schedule.
- Check the current bid-ask spread and trading volume during the relevant market session.
- Choose a limit price if you want a maximum purchase price and understand that an unfilled order may expire.
- After execution, verify the number of shares, average price, commission and currency conversion shown in the account.
- Keep the trade confirmation and tax documents. Note whether distributions are paid in cash or reinvested under your account’s rules.
When an ETF may not fit
An ETF may be unsuitable if you need the money soon, cannot tolerate a large drawdown, lack access to the relevant exchange or would be forced to pay unusually high currency and trading costs. It may also fail to meet your objective if you want direct exposure to one specific company, although choosing that company would reintroduce the single-stock risk this approach is intended to avoid.
If your goal is general long-term diversification rather than a thematic bet, a broadly diversified equity portfolio may serve that goal more directly than a quantum-focused fund. The decision is not “quantum ETF versus no investment”; it is whether this specific risk and exposure belong in your overall plan.
Questions to answer before you buy
- What percentage of the fund is in its five largest holdings?
- How does the index define a quantum-related company?
- How often are holdings rebalanced, and are there company or sector caps?
- Which exchange and currency will you trade?
- Is the fund permitted in your country and account?
- What will your broker charge for commission, spread, custody and currency conversion?
- How would you respond if the fund fell sharply while the technology thesis remained intact?
- What evidence would make you reduce or close the position?
Answering these questions turns a label-driven purchase into a deliberate investment decision. The available funds differ more in methodology, breadth, concentration and access than their shared “quantum” wording suggests.
