You can get indirect quantum-computing exposure by buying shares of diversified technology companies that operate quantum programs or provide access to quantum systems through their cloud platforms. You do not own a quantum-computing asset separately: you own the entire company, so its other businesses, valuation, debt, regulation and execution determine most of your investment outcome.
IBM is the clearest documented example in the available disclosures. On June 2, 2026, IBM announced a plan to invest more than $10 billion in quantum computing over five years. That is a management plan, not confirmed spending, quantum-specific revenue or a forecast of shareholder returns. A disciplined approach is to verify each company’s latest filings, identify whether quantum activity is financially material, and size any position so that a long development timeline or failed roadmap does not jeopardize your broader portfolio.

What “investing through an established company” actually means
Buying an established technology company for quantum exposure is an indirect strategy. The share represents a claim on the company’s consolidated assets, earnings and risks, not on its quantum division alone. A company may spend heavily on research while quantum remains too small to change total revenue or profit for years. Conversely, a technically important announcement may have little effect on the share price if investors already expected it or if the company’s larger businesses move in the opposite direction.

This distinction matters because quantum computing is still a developing technology. Hardware architecture, error correction, software, customer adoption and useful commercial applications are all moving targets. A company can make genuine technical progress without producing a material return for shareholders. Your investment case therefore needs two separate tests:

- Program evidence: Is the company funding research, building systems, selling access or forming partnerships?
- Financial materiality: Can you see quantum-related revenue, costs, assets or risks in filings, and are they large enough to influence the parent company?
The first test tells you whether a quantum effort exists. The second tells you whether owning the stock gives meaningful economic exposure rather than a largely symbolic connection.
IBM: the most clearly documented established-company example
What IBM announced
On June 2, 2026, IBM said it planned to invest more than $10 billion in quantum computing over five years. The announcement described spending across research and development, capital expenditure, manufacturing, partnerships and mergers and acquisitions. Because the statement describes intended activity, treat the figure as a forward-looking corporate plan rather than money already spent.
IBM also reported more than 340 organizations in its IBM Quantum Network and more than 90 deployed quantum systems. Those are IBM’s own reported figures. They indicate the scale IBM associates with its program, but they do not independently prove commercial quantum advantage, sustainable profits or a particular investment return.

IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna said, “The quantum era is no longer ahead of us, it has started.” He continued that clients, partners and users were using IBM quantum computers for work that had been impossible a few years earlier. This is an executive’s characterization of the company’s progress, not an independent measurement of industry-wide commercial value.
What the announcement does not tell you
The announcement does not establish IBM’s quantum-specific revenue, operating profit, cash return, backlog or share-price impact. It also does not guarantee that the entire planned amount will be spent, that acquisitions will close, or that the roadmap will reach a commercially useful level of performance on schedule.
Do not convert “more than $10 billion” into an annual quantum budget by dividing it by five. The mix of research, equipment, manufacturing, partnerships and acquisitions may vary substantially from year to year, and some spending may support broader technology capabilities rather than a separately reported quantum business.

How to assess IBM with filings
IBM’s investor-relations site provides its 2025 annual report and Form 10-K. Read the latest filing available when you invest, because a newer report may change the picture. Focus on:
- Consolidated revenue and operating income, so you understand the scale against which quantum spending must be measured.
- Research and development expense and capital-expenditure disclosures, looking for explanations of major changes rather than assuming every increase is quantum-related.
- Segment reporting and business descriptions, noting whether quantum activity is separately quantified or embedded in a broader segment.
- Risk factors covering technology development, intellectual-property protection, cybersecurity, supply chains, regulation and customer adoption.
- Cash flow, debt and acquisition commitments, which determine how comfortably the company can fund a multiyear program.
- Management’s stated milestones and the language used to distinguish targets from completed results.
If the filing does not isolate quantum revenue or profit, record that fact rather than estimating a number. The absence of a separate figure means the financial materiality of quantum cannot be measured precisely from that disclosure.
Cloud platforms: access to quantum systems is not hardware ownership
Cloud distribution can give an established platform company a role in quantum computing without making it the owner or manufacturer of every system available through the service. IonQ’s fiscal-year 2025 Form 10-K says its systems can be accessed through AWS Braket, Microsoft Azure Quantum and Google Cloud Marketplace. That supports an ecosystem and distribution relationship.
The disclosure does not show that those cloud platforms own IonQ’s hardware, nor does it quantify quantum revenue earned by any platform. A cloud provider may earn usage fees, provide software tools, host a partner’s system or simply make access easier for customers. Those activities have different economics and should not be treated as equivalent.
Questions to ask about a platform relationship
- Who owns the hardware? Separate the cloud service from the specialist company that designs or operates the quantum machine.
- What is the commercial arrangement? Look for disclosed revenue-sharing, hosting, reseller or marketplace terms; do not infer them from a logo or availability statement.
- How much usage exists? Customer access and developer interest are useful indicators, but they are not the same as material revenue.
- Is quantum reported separately? If the platform’s filing does not quantify quantum sales, costs or bookings, its financial exposure may be impossible to isolate.
- Could the relationship end? Partnerships can change as hardware improves, customers switch providers or a platform develops an internal alternative.
For investors focused on established companies, cloud access is best viewed as one piece of ecosystem evidence. It should not replace a review of the platform company’s overall financial statements.

Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, NVIDIA and Intel are often mentioned in discussions of quantum computing. However, a company name alone is not evidence that quantum activity is financially significant. The available material does not provide comparable current quantum-revenue or profitability figures for these companies, so it does not support ranking them by quantum investment merit.

Before making a company-specific claim, check the latest official annual report, quarterly filing, investor presentation and quantum announcement. Confirm whether the company:
- Builds quantum processors, supplies enabling components or provides software and cloud access.
- Reports quantum activity in a business segment or only discusses it in research material.
- Discloses spending, revenue, contracts, deployments or customer usage that can be compared over time.
- Describes a funded plan with dates and amounts, rather than a broad aspiration.
Use consistent standards across companies. It is not meaningful to compare one company’s detailed spending plan with another’s publicity about a research milestone if neither discloses comparable financial data.
A thematic ETF is a different route, not a substitute for selecting established companies
A quantum-themed exchange-traded fund can spread exposure across a basket of companies, but it changes the investment decision. Instead of choosing one diversified technology company, you accept the fund’s index methodology, holdings, rebalancing rules, jurisdiction and costs.

A step-by-step process for researching a company
- Define the exposure you want. Decide whether you want a company with a direct hardware program, a cloud-distribution role, enabling components or simply broad technology diversification. Write the definition before reading promotional material.
- Start with the latest regulatory filing. Read the annual report or Form 10-K, then check subsequent quarterly filings for changed guidance, spending, acquisitions or risk disclosures.
- Locate quantum-specific evidence. Record the date, amount, business activity and source of every claim. Label each item as completed, ongoing or planned.
- Test financial materiality. Search the filing for separately reported quantum revenue, operating costs, assets, capital expenditure or customer contracts. If none is disclosed, mark the item “not stated” rather than estimating it.
- Map the business connection. Identify whether the company owns hardware, licenses technology, supplies components, operates cloud access or partners with another provider.
- Read the risks and funding capacity. Compare the program with cash flow, debt, existing capital commitments and management’s other priorities.
- Check valuation independently. Quantum progress does not tell you whether the share price is attractive. Review the company’s total earnings, cash flow, balance sheet and valuation using current market data.
- Set a monitoring rule. Choose specific updates to follow, such as a new filing, a disclosed milestone, a change in spending or evidence of customer revenue. Avoid changing the position solely because of a headline.
How to judge a quantum program without overreading milestones
Technology milestones
Claims about processor size, error rates, circuit depth or algorithm performance can show engineering progress, but the metric must be understood in context. A larger system is not automatically more useful, and a laboratory demonstration is not the same as a repeatable customer product. Look for definitions, measurement conditions and whether results were independently reproduced.
Customer and deployment evidence
Network membership, cloud availability and deployed-system counts can indicate engagement. They do not by themselves show recurring revenue or profitable demand. Stronger evidence would include named commercial use cases, paid contracts, usage growth and a clear explanation of how the company recognizes revenue.

Spending and capital allocation
A large budget signals commitment but also creates execution and opportunity costs. Ask what portion is research, equipment, manufacturing, partnerships or acquisitions; whether the spending is incremental; and what return or milestone management expects. A plan should be assessed against later actual spending and results.
Roadmap credibility
Compare each new milestone with earlier commitments. Record when targets were announced, revised or achieved. Repeatedly delayed dates, changing definitions or unexplained metric changes increase execution risk even when the underlying research remains promising.

Quantum exposure should normally sit inside a broader allocation rather than replacing diversified savings. Established technology companies can still experience large declines because of cloud competition, advertising or enterprise demand, chip cycles, regulation, interest rates or management decisions unrelated to quantum.
- Limit concentration: Avoid allowing one company’s quantum narrative to dictate your entire technology allocation.
- Separate horizon from liquidity: Quantum development may take many years, so do not use money needed for near-term expenses.
- Use a written thesis: State what evidence would confirm or weaken your reason for owning the shares.
- Rebalance deliberately: Set a schedule or threshold instead of trading on every research announcement.
- Account for total costs: Include brokerage commissions where applicable, bid-ask spreads, fund expenses, taxes and currency conversion.
No source here establishes a suitable allocation percentage, expected return or current valuation. Those decisions depend on your finances, jurisdiction, risk tolerance and the market price when you invest.
Costs, accounts and tax considerations
To buy a public company or ETF, you need an account that offers the relevant exchange and security. Availability, minimums, currency handling and tax treatment vary by country and account type. A fund’s expense ratio reduces returns over time; an individual stock has no fund expense ratio but still carries trading costs and company-specific risk.
Check your broker’s current fee schedule and the fund’s prospectus. For taxes, verify how dividends, capital gains, foreign withholding and transactions inside a tax-advantaged account are treated where you live. The quantum disclosures do not establish any tax outcome, and tax rules can change.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: treating a spending announcement as revenue
Correction: Keep planned investment, realized expenditure, revenue and profit in separate columns in your notes. IBM’s more-than-$10-billion figure is a five-year plan announced in 2026, not quantum revenue.
Mistake: assuming cloud availability means ownership
Correction: Identify the hardware owner and the platform’s disclosed role. IonQ’s filing supports access through named marketplaces; it does not establish ownership or material platform earnings.
Mistake: ranking companies from publicity alone

How to monitor an investment after buying
Review the company’s next annual and quarterly filings for changes in quantum spending, segment reporting, customer activity, capital commitments and risk language. Compare actual results with the original plan. For an ETF, check each updated holdings file, expense ratio, index methodology and prospectus rather than relying on a past snapshot.
Keep a dated investment log containing the announcement, the evidence it supports, what it does not prove and the condition that would make you sell or reduce the position. This prevents a compelling quote or milestone from silently replacing your original financial analysis.
