Then set up a bank account with C-ASBA and a CRN, a CDSC demat account, MeroShare access and, if you will trade listed closed-ended units, an account with a licensed stock broker. Read the fund’s current prospectus before applying: its objective, portfolio limits, tenure, dealing schedule, fees, exit load, dividend policy, risks and tax treatment determine how and when your money can be invested or withdrawn.
Open-ended funds generally issue and repurchase units using a daily net asset value (NAV), subject to the scheme’s dealing and settlement terms. Closed-ended funds run for a stated tenure and trade on the stock exchange, so their market price can be above or below NAV. The steps below show how to choose, buy, monitor and exit either type without assuming a universal minimum investment, return, tax rate or settlement period.

What a mutual fund is in Nepal
A mutual fund pools investors’ money and invests it according to a published scheme document. A professional fund manager selects securities and publishes NAV and reports. The fund is normally organised with a manager and a depository/custodian structure overseen by regulated entities.

SEBON states that its functions include registering mutual funds, permitting collective investment schemes, licensing fund managers and depository companies, and supervising and monitoring them. Confirm that both the scheme and the entities named in its documents appear in SEBON’s current registers before sending money.

Accounts and documents you need
Bank account, C-ASBA and CRN
A bank that supports C-ASBA (the application channel that blocks or debits funds in your bank account) is required for primary fund issues that use that system. Obtain the bank’s Customer Registration Number (CRN) and keep the linked account funded before the offer closes. The exact application fields and minimum amount are set by each offer; use the current offer notice rather than relying on a general figure.
Demat account with a CDSC-licensed DP
Units held electronically are credited to a demat account maintained through a CDSC-licensed depository participant (DP). Complete the DP’s KYC and identity checks. Document lists, photographs, signatures, address evidence and any minimum balance or service charges vary by DP, so obtain its current checklist.
Recommended Free Tools
MeroShare access
Ask the DP to activate MeroShare and check that your mobile number, email, bank details and demat information are correct. MeroShare is used for eligible applications and for viewing holdings, transactions and notices. CDSC’s official services also provide current issue information, IPO results, DP lists and C-ASBA information; use the live portal rather than an old bookmark or forwarded message.

Broker account for listed units
Buying or selling a listed closed-ended fund is a stock-market transaction. Open a relationship with a SEBON-licensed broker, complete its KYC and trading-account or TMS setup, and learn its payment, settlement and collateral rules before placing an order.
Step-by-step: investing in a Nepalese mutual fund
1. Confirm your eligibility and identity
- Choose a bank and DP licensed for the services you need.
- Complete KYC with the bank, DP and, where applicable, broker. Make sure names and identity details match across accounts.
- Collect the account identifiers the intermediary requests, including your demat number and CRN.
- Check the fund’s offer notice for investor categories, application limits, closing time and required documents. Do not infer a universal minimum investment or allotment probability.
2. Activate your digital access
- Request MeroShare credentials from your DP and change the initial password.
- Verify that the bank account used for C-ASBA is linked correctly and that contact details can receive alerts.
- Test login before an issue opens. A last-minute password reset or unverified account can prevent a valid application.
3. Verify the scheme and manager
- Check the scheme and the named fund manager, depository or custodian against SEBON’s current mutual-fund and intermediary information.
- Download the latest prospectus, offer notice, periodic report and any amendment. Confirm that the document identifies the same scheme name, manager and issue terms.
- Be cautious of social-media messages or payment requests that bypass the bank, authorised collection channel or broker.
4. Select the purchase route
- Primary issue: Follow the offer notice and submit through the permitted C-ASBA/MeroShare or designated collection route before the stated closing time. Confirm the application status and retain the acknowledgement.
- Listed closed-ended unit: Search the correct ticker in your broker’s system. Check the latest market price, published NAV, trading volume and bid–ask spread, then place an order. Complete payment and settlement exactly as the broker instructs.
- Open-ended unit: Apply through the manager or its designated collection channel. The cited regulation summary provides for daily-NAV repurchase, but each scheme states dealing days, cut-off times, settlement and any exit load.
5. Compare before committing money
Put the following facts side by side for every candidate fund:
- Investment objective and permitted asset mix.
- Open-ended or closed-ended structure, tenure and liquidity arrangements.
- Current NAV; for a listed fund, the exchange price and its discount or premium to NAV.
- Manager, depository and other disclosed charges.
- Exit-load terms, dealing frequency and settlement process.
- Dividend or distribution policy and whether payments are automatic or require instructions.
- Risk disclosures, concentration limits, borrowing or derivative permissions and reporting frequency.
- Quality of investor notices, statement access and complaint-handling channels.
A single strong past period does not establish future performance. Compare several reporting periods and understand what the portfolio held during them.

Neither structure removes investment risk. An open-ended NAV can fall when portfolio assets fall; a closed-ended unit can also trade at a discount even when its NAV is unchanged. A 2020 SEBON Mutual Fund Regulation amendment summary cited for these rules records the following ceilings. Treat them as regulatory limits, not as a promise that every scheme charges the maximum. The current prospectus, tariff and any later amendment control your investment. You may also encounter broker commission and statutory market or settlement charges when trading listed units, plus DP or bank service charges. Ask the relevant intermediary for its current tariff. Do not assume a fee is absent because it is not shown in an advertisement. The cited regulation summary describes limits intended to diversify scheme exposure: The summary notes stated exceptions near scheme maturity. Read the current regulation and prospectus for the exact exception and calculation. A limit reduces concentration in one permitted investment; it cannot prevent market, credit, interest-rate, liquidity or management risk, and it does not guarantee a profit. The Tool Desk A market order can execute at an unexpectedly different price when liquidity is thin. A price below NAV may reflect limited demand, time remaining to maturity or doubts about portfolio value; it is not automatically a bargain. For a closed-ended fund, monitor maturity, extension, delisting and redemption notices. Follow the stated procedure and deadlines; an exchange sale before maturity is a normal market transaction and may produce a price different from NAV or the eventual redemption value. Common avoidable errors include sending money to an unauthorised account, using mismatched KYC details, overlooking an exit load, confusing market price with NAV, buying without checking tenure, and ignoring maturity or dividend notices. SEBON’s homepage counters, accessed in 2026, showed 24 mutual funds, 17 fund-manager and depository entities, 125 depository participants, 43 C-ASBA banks or financial institutions and 90 stock brokers. CDSC’s homepage counters, also accessed in 2026, showed 8,116,484 beneficial-owner demat accounts, 7,208,020 registered MeroShare users and 5,120,895 active MeroShare users. These are live operational counters, not permanent totals; refresh the official pages before relying on them. For electronic holdings and eligible primary applications, you generally need a CDSC demat account and MeroShare access activated through your DP. The fund’s current offer notice determines the permitted application channel. A broker account is additionally required to trade listed closed-ended units. Not necessarily. Repurchase is made through the manager’s stated channel on its dealing days and cut-off times, using the applicable daily NAV and any disclosed exit load. Check settlement terms in the current scheme document. Its exchange price is set by supply and demand. Limited trading volume, a wide spread, time remaining to maturity or investor expectations can produce a discount or premium to NAV. There is no universal amount established here. The applicable primary offer, open-ended application form or broker order screen states the current minimum and any category-specific limits. No. Portfolio values and distributions can vary, and a dividend policy is not a promise of payment. Read the scheme’s risk and distribution disclosures and do not infer future results from one past period. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
