To invest in a mutual fund for a child in India, open a minor folio with the child as the sole unitholder and a parent or court-appointed guardian recorded to operate it. Complete the guardian’s KYC, use an allowed bank account for subscriptions, and arrange for redemption proceeds to reach the child’s verified bank account. The guardian’s authority ends when the child turns 18, so the now-adult must complete the AMC’s minor-to-major status change, KYC and bank-detail updates before transactions restart.
A folio in the child’s name is not automatically a tax-saving device. Some minor income can be clubbed with a parent’s income under Section 64 and reported in Schedule SPI, while the treatment of distributions and redemptions depends on the facts and the tax year. Keep records and obtain current tax advice for the family’s situation.

What a mutual-fund folio for a minor means
A minor folio is an investment account in which the child is the sole unitholder. The child cannot be added as a joint holder. A parent acting as a natural guardian, or a court-appointed guardian where applicable, is recorded in the folio to act for the child. This ownership distinction matters: the guardian is an operator, not a co-owner of the units.

It also creates a hard handoff at majority. Until the folio is changed from minor to major and the required documents are accepted, the guardian cannot continue normal transactions after the child’s 18th birthday.

Decide who should own the units
Before completing an application, decide whether the units should legally belong to the child or whether an adult should invest in the adult’s own folio for a child-related goal. The minor-folio route is useful when the family wants the child’s ownership recorded now, but it brings age-18 administration and bank-account restrictions. An adult-owned folio may be simpler to operate, but its ownership, control, tax reporting and estate consequences are different.
| Issue | Child’s minor folio | Parent’s or another adult’s folio |
|---|---|---|
| Legal owner | The child is the sole unitholder; the guardian is recorded to act for the child. | The adult named as unitholder owns the units. The child is the goal beneficiary, not the folio owner. |
| Who can transact now | The eligible guardian operates the account while the child is a minor. | The adult owner transacts under the normal rules for that folio. |
| Change at age 18 | Guardian authority ends. The folio must be changed from minor to major, with updated KYC and bank details, before transactions resume. | No minor-to-major conversion is required merely because the goal is for a child. |
| Subscription bank account | SEBI’s July 2025 circular text permits payment from the minor’s account, the parent’s or legal guardian’s account, or a joint account with that parent or guardian. | The applicable payment and third-party-payment rules for the adult’s folio apply. |
| Redemption bank account | Redemption proceeds must be credited to the minor’s verified bank account under the cited SEBI text. | Proceeds normally follow the verified bank mandate of the adult folio. |
| Tax and reporting | Some minor income may be clubbed with a parent’s income under Section 64 and reported in Schedule SPI. Distributions and redemptions require fact-specific analysis. | Tax is generally considered in the adult owner’s circumstances, but this article does not establish a universal advantage for either ownership route. |
| Administration | Requires guardian KYC, relationship or court-appointment evidence, and a majority conversion. | Usually avoids the minor-status conversion, but the adult remains the legal owner. |
Do not choose the minor route solely because the application is in the child’s name. Select the ownership arrangement that matches the family’s intended control, succession plans, cash-flow needs and tax position. Where significant assets or multiple guardians are involved, take independent legal and tax advice.
How to open and fund a minor folio
- Define the goal and time horizon. Write down what the money is for, when it may be needed and how much flexibility the family needs. A university goal ten years away has a different risk capacity from a fee payment due next year. Separate the target amount from the amount the family can actually invest without disrupting emergency savings.
- Choose the ownership route. If the child is to own the units, proceed with a minor folio. If an adult will retain ownership and control, use the adult’s folio instead. Record the decision so later contributions are not split across inconsistent ownership arrangements.
- Shortlist an AMC and scheme. Compare the scheme’s stated objective, asset mix, risk level, diversification, costs, liquidity and suitability for the time horizon. A scheme labelled a “children’s fund” is not automatically appropriate, guaranteed or safer. The material available for this guide does not establish current scheme returns, fees or a best-performing option, so do not select on a label alone.
- Confirm guardian eligibility and documents. A parent may act as a natural guardian. A non-parent or other person may need evidence of court appointment. The AMC can request proof of the guardian-child relationship or court order, identity and address records, the child’s details and other supporting documents. Ask for the current minor-folio and KYC checklist before submitting anything; requirements can vary by service channel.
- Complete the guardian’s KYC. The parent or legal guardian opening the folio on the child’s behalf must complete KYC. Ensure the name, date of birth, address, signatures and document numbers match across the application, KYC record and bank mandate. Resolve a mismatch before investing, because it can delay redemptions or the later majority conversion.
- Fill in the folio application with the child as sole holder. Enter the minor’s details as the unitholder and identify the eligible guardian in the guardian field. Do not add the child as a joint holder or describe the guardian as a co-owner. Select the scheme, option and investment method only after checking the current scheme documents and the family’s objective.
- Set the bank mandate and make the first contribution. Under the payment routes described in SEBI’s July 2025 circular text, the subscription can come from the minor’s own account, the parent’s or legal guardian’s account, or a joint account with that parent or guardian. Confirm the exact account-name and verification rules with the AMC before sending money. Keep the payment confirmation and folio acknowledgment.
- Set up a SIP only after the folio is active. Check that the standing instruction is linked to the correct minor folio and an allowed payer account. Save the SIP date, amount, mandate reference and cancellation procedure. Treat a SIP as a contribution method, not a guarantee of returns; review whether the amount still fits the goal and household cash flow.
- Store a complete record. Keep the application, KYC acknowledgment, guardian evidence, bank verification, folio number, transaction statements, scheme documents, SIP mandate and nomination or transmission records where available. A digital folder plus an offline backup makes the age-18 handoff easier.
Subscription and redemption bank rules
Payment direction is one of the most common sources of rejected transactions in a minor folio. The July 2025 SEBI circular text distinguishes money going into the folio from money coming out.

| Initial or additional subscription | Payment may come from the minor’s own bank account, the parent’s or legal guardian’s bank account, or a joint account with the parent or legal guardian. | Use the exact account and payment method accepted by the AMC; retain proof showing the source. |
| Redemption | Proceeds must be credited to the minor’s verified bank account. | Verify the child’s bank details early. A guardian’s account should not be assumed to be an acceptable redemption destination. |
If a payment is rejected, first compare the payer’s name, account type, mandate, folio status and bank verification with the AMC’s current instructions. Do not repeatedly retry from an unrelated third-party account; ask the AMC or registrar which correction is required.
How to choose a scheme for a child-related goal
Match risk to the date the money is needed
Longer horizons can tolerate more interim fluctuation than a goal that is only a few months away, but the family still needs a plan for reducing risk as the spending date approaches. Write down a review date and a point at which contributions or asset mix will be reassessed. A goal with an uncertain date should retain more liquidity than one with a fixed, distant date.
Assess diversification rather than a sales label
Review what the scheme actually owns, how concentrated it is and whether it duplicates other funds the family already holds. Combining several funds with the same underlying exposure does not automatically diversify the portfolio. A “child” or “education” name says nothing by itself about volatility, guarantees or suitability.
Check costs, liquidity and operational features
Read the current scheme information for recurring charges, exit conditions, dealing cut-off times, settlement expectations and any restrictions that matter to the goal. The available official material does not provide a current fee comparison, so obtain the numbers from the AMC’s latest documents rather than relying on an old article or a marketing illustration.

Keep the number of holdings manageable
A child-related portfolio should be understandable to the guardian and, eventually, to the young adult. A small set of purposeful holdings is easier to monitor than a collection chosen from fund names. Document why each holding exists and what would cause a change; do not switch because of a single short-term performance period.
Running contributions and monitoring the account
Automated contributions work only when the linked bank account is funded and the mandate remains valid. Keep a cash buffer for the SIP date, update the AMC if the guardian’s bank account changes, and check statements after the first debit. A failed installment can create a gap in the goal plan even though the folio itself remains open.
Review the portfolio at a planned interval rather than reacting to daily market movements. Recheck the target date, contribution amount, risk capacity, diversification and liquidity. If the goal moves closer, discuss whether the portfolio should become less volatile; make any change through the AMC’s permitted process and record the reason.

Prepare for the child’s 18th birthday
Majority is an operational deadline, not just a birthday. The guardian’s authority to transact ends when the child becomes an adult. Existing SIP, systematic transfer plan (STP) and systematic withdrawal plan (SWP) standing instructions stop at majority, so a family that does nothing can see scheduled transactions interrupted.
- Set a reminder well before the birthday. Note the date shown in the child’s records and contact the AMC or registrar for its current minor-to-major procedure. Starting early gives time to correct a KYC or bank mismatch.
- Obtain the conversion forms and checklist. The AMC will specify the status-change request, identity and address evidence, signatures, photographs or other records it currently requires. Requirements are provider-specific; use the latest version rather than an old form.
- Have the now-adult complete KYC and furnish bank details. The former minor must provide updated KYC and a verified bank account in the adult’s name. The guardian’s old authority and bank mandate do not substitute for the adult’s documents.
- Submit the request and wait for confirmation. Until the AMC records the folio as major, transactions may remain blocked. Keep the acknowledgment, reference number and copies of every document.
- Re-establish future instructions. After conversion, set up a new SIP, STP or SWP only if the adult wants one and the AMC confirms that the folio is operational. Review the goal, risk and bank mandate with the young adult rather than automatically carrying over the old instruction.
There is no safe assumption that a guardian can redeem, switch or change a mandate on the day the child turns 18. Plan for a processing interval and avoid scheduling a goal payment that depends on a same-day transaction.
Tax treatment: why the child’s name is not a guaranteed tax benefit
Putting units in a child’s name does not, by itself, create a blanket exemption or reduce the family’s tax bill. Income Tax Department return materials recognize that certain minor-child income is clubbed with a parent’s income under Section 64 and reported in Schedule SPI when it is includable. The parent to whom the income is attributed, the nature and timing of the income, and the applicable tax year can affect the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMutual-fund distributions, gains on redemption, transfers, and exceptions to the clubbing rules require a fact-specific calculation. The official material cited here does not establish every distribution or redemption case, a universal rate, or a complete list of exceptions. Do not copy a tax treatment from another family’s return or from an older tax year.

For each financial year, retain purchase confirmations, account statements, distribution records, redemption statements, bank credits and the child’s and guardian’s tax identifiers. Ask a qualified tax professional, or consult the current Income Tax Department instructions, how the family’s particular income should be attributed and reported. Keep the advice with the folio records so the child can understand the history after majority.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Listing the guardian as a joint holder. A minor cannot be a joint holder in the folio. Correct the application so the child is the sole unitholder and the eligible adult is recorded as guardian.
- Using an unrelated payer account. Subscription money is restricted to the routes described in the July 2025 SEBI text. Stop the failed payment, confirm the accepted payer and submit a fresh instruction only after the AMC explains the correction.
- Expecting redemption into the guardian’s account. Verify the minor’s bank account before a withdrawal is needed. Update the bank record through the AMC’s process if the child’s account has changed.
- Waiting until the 18th birthday to start conversion. The guardian’s authority ends at majority and standing instructions stop. Start the status-change process in advance and retain proof of submission.
- Assuming a children’s scheme is guaranteed. A label does not establish safety, suitability or returns. Read the objective, holdings, risk information, costs and liquidity terms.
- Choosing for tax alone. Minor-income clubbing can apply, and the available material does not support a universal tax advantage. Compare ownership and tax consequences with professional advice.
- Letting records become inaccessible. A missing folio number, bank proof or guardian document can delay service. Keep a current archive and tell the child where it is stored.
- Confusing a SIP with a locked investment. A SIP schedules contributions; it does not remove the scheme’s market risk or replace a review of the goal. Check the mandate and portfolio separately.
An illustrative operating plan
Suppose a parent wants to build a fund for a child’s education several years away. The parent first records the target date and amount, confirms that the child should own the units, and selects a diversified scheme whose risk and liquidity fit that horizon. The parent then opens a minor folio with the child as sole holder, submits the relationship evidence and guardian KYC, and verifies the child’s bank account.
The first subscription is paid from one of the permitted accounts. A SIP is established only after the folio and mandate are confirmed, and the family stores each statement. At each planned review, the parent checks contributions, goal timing, diversification, costs and liquidity rather than chasing a recent return. Before the child’s 18th birthday, the parent contacts the AMC, the young adult completes the status change and KYC, and any new standing instruction is created after the folio is confirmed as major.
This example describes the sequence, not a recommended fund, return or contribution amount. The right scheme and amount depend on the family’s objective, risk capacity and tax facts.
