Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo buy Indian IT shares, you need three linked services: a bank account to move money, a trading account with a SEBI-registered broker to place orders, and a demat account with a registered depository participant to hold the shares electronically. After completing KYC, you transfer funds, select a listed company, place a delivery (CNC) order, verify the contract note and confirm that the shares appear in your demat statement.
The account-opening process is straightforward; deciding what to buy and how much requires more work. You can research individual companies such as Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), HCL Technologies or Wipro, or use an IT-sector index fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) for broader exposure. Neither a particular broker nor a particular stock is universally best, so your choice should reflect your objective, risk tolerance, willingness to research companies and need for diversification.

What a demat account does—and what it does not do
A demat account is the electronic holding account for your securities. As the National Stock Exchange of India explains, “The Demat account is where your securities will be held digitally.” It does not, by itself, place buy or sell orders or transfer money to the exchange.
Your investing setup has three parts:
- Bank account: supplies and receives investment money through normal banking channels.
- Trading account: connects you to the stock exchange through a SEBI-registered broker and is used to submit orders.
- Demat account: records your ownership of shares and other securities in electronic form through a registered depository participant.
India has two securities depositories: NSDL and CDSL. Your broker or participant will connect your demat account to one of them. You may see the depository name and your demat identification details on account statements and contract documentation.

For an ordinary share purchase intended to be held beyond the trading day, choose the broker’s delivery or CNC (cash and carry) product. Intraday products are designed for positions that are squared off according to the broker’s rules and are not the same as taking delivery of shares in your demat account.
Before opening an account: decisions that affect your setup
Choose a SEBI-registered intermediary
Check that the broker and the entity providing demat services are properly registered before submitting documents or transferring money. Review the broker’s current tariff sheet rather than relying on an old advertisement. A low advertised brokerage rate does not necessarily mean the lowest total cost because statutory levies and depository charges may still apply.
Decide whether you need a regular demat account or BSDA
A Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA) can reduce annual maintenance charges for eligible individual investors with relatively small holdings. The SEBI Investor Charter states that no minimum balance is required in a demat account and that opening one carries no charge. For a BSDA, the charter states:
| Value of holdings | Maximum annual maintenance charge under the charter |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹50,000 | ₹0 |
| ₹50,001 to ₹2,00,000 | Not more than ₹100 |
Eligibility and conversion conditions are set by the applicable rules and your intermediary. Ask the participant whether your account qualifies, how holdings are valued and what happens if you exceed the threshold.
Set an investment objective and risk limit
Write down why you are investing—such as long-term wealth building, a specific goal or sector exposure—and how much of your portfolio you are prepared to place in IT. A sector portfolio can lose value when technology spending, overseas demand, currency rates, wage costs or market valuations move against the industry. A position-size limit and diversification can reduce the damage from one company or one sector falling, but neither can eliminate losses.

Documents and KYC requirements
KYC is mandatory. SEBI’s investor education material and NSE’s account-opening guidance identify the usual requirements as a PAN, an officially valid identity document, an address document and a photograph. Depending on the intermediary and the verification route, examples of acceptable identity or address documents can include:
- Aadhaar
- Passport
- Voter ID
- Driving licence
- PAN card
Use the exact name and date of birth shown on your official records. If your address, mobile number or bank details have changed, update them through the intermediary’s prescribed process. A mismatch can delay approval or trigger a request for additional evidence.
Recommended Free Tools
During onboarding, you will normally provide bank details and complete the required client agreements, risk disclosures and e-sign or in-person verification steps. Read the permissions you grant, especially those concerning power of attorney, demat debits and communication preferences.
Step-by-step: buying an Indian IT share
- Open and verify the accounts. Apply with a SEBI-registered broker and depository participant, submit PAN and officially valid identity and address documents, complete the photograph and verification steps, and wait for approval.
- Link your bank account. Add the bank account from which you will fund purchases and to which sale proceeds may be credited. Use only the banking channels and beneficiary details supplied by the intermediary.
- Transfer funds. Move the amount you intend to invest into the broker’s trading account. Keep enough cash for the purchase price and applicable brokerage, exchange charges, taxes, stamp duty, GST and any depository debit fee shown in the order preview or tariff sheet.
- Find the listed security. Search the NSE or BSE symbol for the company you have researched. Verify the company name and exchange before proceeding; similar symbols and multiple listings can cause avoidable errors.
- Select delivery/CNC. Choose the product that results in delivery when your objective is ownership. Do not select an intraday product merely because it appears first in the order ticket.
- Enter quantity and order type. Enter the number of shares. A market order seeks execution at the best available prices but does not guarantee the exact price you saw. A limit order lets you specify the highest price you will pay, but it may not execute if the market does not reach that price.
- Check the live quote and order preview. Review the displayed price, quantity, product, exchange, estimated value and every charge shown. Confirm that the order will use available funds and that the limit price, if any, is correct.
- Submit and monitor the status. After authentication, check whether the order is open, partially filled, fully executed or rejected. A submitted order is not the same as an executed trade.
- Keep the contract note. SEBI advises investors to insist on a contract note or confirmation memo within 24 hours. Check the trade date, security, quantity, price, order type and charges against your own record.
- Confirm demat credit. Once settlement is complete, look for the shares in the demat statement or holdings screen. If the position is missing or the quantity is wrong, contact the broker or participant promptly and retain the order and contract records.
What to do when an order is rejected
Read the rejection message before resubmitting. Common causes include insufficient available funds, an invalid or changed price band, a quantity restriction, an incorrect product type, a trading halt or incomplete account permissions. Correct the stated issue, recheck the symbol and charges, and avoid repeatedly sending an order when you do not know why the first one failed.

How to research an individual IT company
Read the company’s latest exchange filings and annual report, then compare companies on the same measures. A high share price does not by itself mean a company is expensive, and a low price does not make it cheap.
Growth and profitability
- Track revenue growth across several reporting periods rather than one unusually strong quarter.
- Compare operating and net margins, and investigate whether changes come from pricing, business mix, utilisation, wage costs or one-off items.
- Examine cash generation alongside reported profit. Accounting earnings that do not convert into cash deserve closer scrutiny.
Demand, clients and geography
- Look at order book, bookings or contract momentum where the company reports those measures.
- Assess concentration among major clients and industries. Losing one large customer can affect a company more than a diversified client base.
- Review geographic revenue exposure. Many Indian IT companies earn substantial revenue overseas, making local and international economic conditions relevant.
Currency and employee costs
Overseas billing and currency movements can influence reported revenue and margins. Employee costs are also central to an IT services business. Compare hiring, attrition, utilisation and wage trends with the company’s own guidance and prior periods instead of treating a single currency move as a complete investment thesis.
Valuation, capital allocation and governance
Use more than one valuation measure and compare the result with the company’s growth, margins, cash flow and business quality. Review dividends, buybacks, acquisitions, cash balances and debt. Read governance disclosures, related-party information, auditor commentary and material exchange filings. SEBI’s guidance is to research a company’s background, future prospects and financial strength before investing.
Individual stock or IT index fund/ETF?
The choice is less about finding a universally superior product and more about deciding how much company-specific risk and research you want.

| Consideration | Individual IT stock | IT index fund or ETF |
|---|---|---|
| Diversification | Depends on the number of companies you buy; one holding can dominate results. | Spreads exposure across the index constituents, subject to index weights. |
| Research burden | Requires ongoing work on business performance, valuation, filings and governance. | Requires checking the index methodology, fund costs, tracking quality and portfolio changes. |
| Fees | Trading and account charges apply; there is no fund management fee for directly holding the shares. | Includes the product’s expense ratio and trading costs; an ETF can also have bid-ask spreads and tracking differences. |
| Liquidity | Depends on the particular share and the exchange market. | Depends on whether it is an exchange-traded product or a mutual-fund format and on the available dealing arrangements. |
| Tax treatment | Depends on the current rules and your holding period. | Depends on the product structure and current rules; verify before investing. |
| Control | You choose the companies and position sizes. | The index methodology determines constituents and weights. |
A direct portfolio may suit an investor who can read filings and tolerate company-specific volatility. An index product may suit someone who wants sector exposure without selecting a single winner. Either way, check the product documents, current costs, liquidity and tracking performance before placing an order.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Costs you should check before buying
Opening a demat account does not automatically make trading free. The total debit can include several separate items:
- Brokerage charged by the intermediary.
- Exchange transaction charges.
- Securities transaction tax.
- GST on applicable services.
- Stamp duty.
- Depository participant charges, particularly for debiting securities when selling.
- Account maintenance or other tariffs that apply to your account type.
Rates and applicability vary by broker, transaction type and current regulation. Read the current tariff sheet and the order preview for the exact transaction. Compare the all-in cost for the trade you actually make rather than a headline brokerage rate. Keep copies of contract notes and periodic statements so you can reconcile debits and holdings.
Risk controls for an IT-sector portfolio
Limit concentration
Set a maximum percentage for one company and for the IT sector as a whole. If you already own broad-market funds or receive income from the technology industry, count that economic exposure when deciding how concentrated your investments are.
Stage purchases when appropriate
Staged purchases can reduce the risk of committing all your money immediately before a price decline. They do not guarantee a better return and can underperform a lump-sum purchase if prices rise. Use a schedule that matches your cash flow and objective, not a promise that markets will become predictable.

Do not borrow without understanding the consequences
Borrowing or using leveraged products can magnify losses and create repayment obligations even when the share price falls. Do not use borrowed money unless you fully understand the product, costs, collateral rules and worst-case outcome.
Separate a thesis from a tip
Unsolicited messages, social-media calls and assured or fixed-return claims are not substitutes for research. Verify information through exchange filings, the company’s reports and regulated intermediary communications. Avoid dabba trading and any arrangement that does not create a properly documented exchange trade.
Records, monitoring and investor protection
Keep your account-opening documents, contract notes, confirmation memos, bank transfer records, demat statements and tax records in an accessible place. Review holdings and transaction statements regularly. Check daily exchange alerts and investigate any trade or debit you do not recognise.
