How to Invest in GIFT City Funds as a Resident Indian (2026 Guide)

A resident Indian may be able to invest in a GIFT-IFSC fund by remitting money through the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) using an authorised dealer (AD) bank. The route is not automatic: each fund sets its own eligibility, minimum investment, currency, dealing schedule and redemption rules. Before sending money, identify the exact scheme, verify its fund-management entity (FME) and authorisation on current International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) records, obtain the latest offer documents, and confirm the bank and tax process for your circumstances.

“GIFT City fund” is not a single product. GIFT-IFSC contains multiple fund structures and strategies. IFSCA registration confirms a regulatory status, not the quality, solvency or performance of a fund. Treat the steps below as a due-diligence and transaction framework, then rely on the scheme’s current documents, your AD bank and a qualified tax professional for the final decision.

What a resident Indian is actually investing in

GIFT City is the common name for Gujarat International Finance Tec-City’s International Financial Services Centre (GIFT-IFSC). Funds operating there are governed by the IFSC regulatory framework administered by IFSCA. The investor subscribes to a particular authorised scheme managed by a registered FME; there is no standard “GIFT City fund” with one set of rules.

A scheme may be an open-ended or closed-ended vehicle, a retail or restricted-investor product, an equity, debt, private-market or multi-asset strategy, and may accept subscriptions in US dollars or another permitted currency. Those differences determine who can invest, how much is required, when units can be bought or redeemed, how currency movements affect returns and what documents the bank requests.

IFSCA’s fund-management pages provide the regulatory framework and links to registered FMEs and authorised schemes. Use those records to verify the legal entities, but do not treat listing as a recommendation. Jio BlackRock International AMC’s official FAQ states: “The registration with the IFSCA does not imply approval or endorsement by the IFSCA of the Fund Management Entity, of any scheme, or of the financial soundness or performance thereof.”

Can a resident Indian invest in a GIFT City fund through LRS?

For the DSP Retail Fund example examined, the manager describes resident Indian individuals as eligible investors and presents an outbound-fund investment through an AD bank under LRS. The investor submits the bank’s prescribed forms, including Form A2, together with KYC information. That is an issuer explanation for a particular product, not a universal rule for every IFSC scheme.

Your eligibility can change with the fund’s legal category, investor classification, source of money, subscription currency, minimum commitment and whether the scheme is open for dealing. A resident individual should obtain written confirmation from the manager or its authorised distributor before initiating a remittance. Do not assume that eligibility for one DSP scheme, or for an FME’s retail category, applies to another fund.

How to invest: the practical sequence

1. Name the exact scheme and share class

Start with the fund’s legal name, not a broad label such as “GIFT City equity fund.” Obtain the latest private placement memorandum, offer document or other binding scheme materials and record:

  • the legal fund category and whether it is retail or restricted-investor;
  • investment objective, permitted assets, geographic exposure and concentration limits;
  • share class, subscription currency and minimum initial and subsequent amounts;
  • subscription cut-off, valuation point and dealing frequency;
  • redemption notice period, gates, lock-ins, suspension rights and settlement timing;
  • management fees, performance fees, operating expenses, entry or exit loads and any other charges; and
  • the trustee, custodian, administrator, auditor and other key service providers.

Marketing pages can help you locate a product, but the current offer document controls. Save the version and date you relied on because terms and subscription windows can change.

2. Verify the FME and scheme with IFSCA

Open IFSCA’s current fund-management records and check both sides of the relationship: the FME must appear in the relevant register, and the specific scheme must appear in the authorised-scheme information where applicable. Confirm the legal name and registration details match the offer document and the bank’s beneficiary instructions.

IFSCA also links a SEBI circular dated 27 June 2024 concerning participation by resident Indians, non-resident Indians and Overseas Citizens of India in certain SEBI-registered foreign portfolio investors based in an IFSC. That FPI arrangement is a different route from subscribing to an IFSCA-authorised fund scheme. Do not use an FPI circular as proof that a particular retail fund accepts you.

3. Confirm eligibility and complete onboarding

Ask the fund manager or authorised distributor to confirm, in writing, that the scheme accepts your exact status as a resident Indian individual and your source of funds. The DSP material reviewed describes KYC and CKYC onboarding and says a valid CKYC number is required. Other schemes may request additional identity, address, tax-residency, beneficial-owner or source-of-funds information.

Typical onboarding questions include whether your PAN and CKYC details match, whether the bank account is in your own name, whether joint holders are permitted, and whether a power of attorney or nominee arrangement is accepted. Resolve discrepancies before remittance; a payment can be delayed or returned if the beneficiary name, investor name or documentation does not match.

4. Confirm the remittance route with your AD bank

Speak to the bank’s foreign-exchange or remittance desk before signing the application. Give the bank the fund’s offer document and beneficiary instructions and ask it to confirm:

  • that the proposed subscription is permitted under the current LRS and FEMA process;
  • which LRS purpose code and Form A2 version the bank requires;
  • the current annual LRS headroom available to you and how the bank calculates it;
  • supporting KYC, PAN, tax-residency and source-of-funds documents;
  • beneficiary name, account number, SWIFT or other payment details and acceptable remittance currency;
  • bank fees, correspondent-bank charges, foreign-exchange spread and expected settlement time; and
  • any tax collection at source (TCS), declaration or reporting the bank applies to the transaction.

DSP’s explanation describes the transaction as an overseas investment through LRS and mentions Form A2 and KYC documents. It does not replace current RBI rules or your bank’s operating instructions. Obtain the bank’s confirmation immediately before payment because forms, codes, thresholds and processing requirements can change.

5. Submit the application and retain the audit trail

Complete the scheme application exactly as the offer document instructs. Keep the signed application, KYC acknowledgement, CKYC details, Form A2, remittance advice, bank debit confirmation, allotment statement, investor number and all fee disclosures. Ask when the NAV will be determined, when units will be allotted and how the manager will notify you if the payment is rejected or partially accepted.

For a foreign-currency subscription, retain both the currency amount and the rupee amount debited by the bank. Those records are useful for cost-basis, exchange-rate and tax calculations and for reconciling future redemptions.

How to evaluate the fund before committing money

Understand the portfolio, not just the label

Read the permitted-investment and risk sections. A fund described as “global equity” may have limits on individual issuers, sectors, countries, derivatives, cash and unlisted securities. Check whether exposure is direct or through other funds, whether leverage is allowed and how temporary cash holdings are handled.

Measure currency exposure

If you remit rupees and subscribe in US dollars or another foreign currency, your result in rupees depends on both the fund’s investment return and exchange-rate movement. Determine whether the fund hedges currency, which currency its NAV uses, and whether conversion occurs at the bank, the fund or both. Compare the manager’s dealing currency with the currency in which you will eventually spend the money.

Check liquidity and redemption mechanics

“Open-ended” does not necessarily mean same-day liquidity. Read the dealing calendar, notice period, cut-off time, gates, suspension powers, side-pocket provisions and settlement cycle. Private-market or less-liquid holdings can lengthen redemptions. Ask how holidays in India, the IFSC and overseas markets affect valuation and payment dates.

Calculate the full cost

Look beyond the headline management fee. Include performance or incentive fees, fund expenses, custody and administration charges, transfer fees, bank remittance costs, foreign-exchange spreads, distributor commissions and any redemption or exit charge. Ask whether expenses are charged to NAV and how often they accrue. A fee that appears small annually can materially affect a long holding period, especially when combined with currency conversion costs.

Assess structure and oversight

Identify the trustee, custodian, administrator, auditor and legal form. Confirm how investor assets are held, how NAV errors are corrected, what conflicts policy applies and where complaints must be directed. Regulatory registration is not a guarantee of performance or financial soundness, so review audited information and risk disclosures rather than relying on the registration label.

Worked example: the DSP Global Equity Fund information

DSP describes its Global Equity Fund as an open-ended Retail Fund constituted as an irrevocable determinate trust, with an FME, trustee and custodian. Its stated objective is long-term capital appreciation through primarily global equity and equity-related instruments. The article reviewed gives an indicative allocation of at least 65% and up to 100% of NAV in global equity or equity-related instruments, with up to 35% in other securities, including cash and cash equivalents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those percentages are issuer-provided descriptions from the material reviewed, not a substitute for the current offer document. Confirm the present allocation limits, minimum subscription, currency, dealing terms and charges before applying. DSP’s product pages also describe India-focused strategies; some are restricted-investor schemes with high minimum subscriptions and should not be presented as generally available retail funds.

The product information says US dollars are the preferred currency for inbound funds and lists other major currencies as accepted. “Preferred” is not the same as “available for every scheme”: obtain the exact fund’s payment currency and beneficiary instructions from the current application pack and your AD bank.

Tax, TCS and Indian reporting: what is and is not established

Tax treatment cannot be answered reliably by saying that a fund is located in GIFT City. The sources reviewed do not establish a complete, current rule for an individual resident’s gains, distributions, foreign-asset disclosures or TCS on a remittance into every GIFT-IFSC scheme.

DSP says taxes are discharged at fund level for the particular fund example it describes and that the NAV reflects a tax provision. Another product structure may make different tax disclosures. Fund-level tax accounting does not automatically settle your personal Indian income-tax, reporting or withholding obligations.

Before subscribing, ask the manager for the scheme’s current tax note and ask a qualified tax professional to assess your facts. Obtain written answers to:

  • how subscriptions, redemptions, dividends or other distributions are classified for you as a resident individual;
  • which exchange rate and transaction date should be used to compute Indian rupee cost and proceeds;
  • whether the investment, income or foreign-currency balance belongs in any foreign-asset or account disclosure in your Indian return;
  • whether TCS applies to the proposed remittance, what threshold and rate the bank uses, and how credit is claimed; and
  • what records must be retained for basis, holding period, losses and subsequent repatriation.

Do not rely on an old tax article or on a fund-level statement as a personal filing conclusion. Tax law, reporting forms and bank implementation can change independently of the fund’s investment strategy.

What the official records establish about providers

Item Established information What you still need to verify
IFSCA fund-management records IFSCA publishes the framework and links to registered FMEs and authorised schemes. The exact legal entity, current authorisation, subscription status and terms of the scheme you want.
DSP Global Equity Fund example DSP describes an open-ended Retail Fund, global-equity objective, indicative 65%–100% global equity allocation and an LRS onboarding route for resident individuals. Current offer document, minimum, currency, fees, dealing terms, tax treatment and whether applications are presently accepted.
Jio BlackRock International AMC Its FAQ identifies the company as an IFSCA-registered Registered FME (Retail). An available scheme’s resident eligibility, live subscription status, minimum, liquidity and all commercial terms.

The table separates a provider’s regulatory status from the facts needed to make a transaction. A registered FME does not prove that a particular fund is open, suitable or accessible to you.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every GIFT fund is retail

Some India-focused or alternative strategies are restricted-investor products with high minimums. Verify the investor category and minimum in the scheme document.

Confusing an IFSC FPI route with a fund subscription

The SEBI circular linked from IFSCA concerns certain SEBI-registered FPIs based in IFSCs. It does not establish that you can subscribe to an IFSCA-authorised retail fund on the same terms.

Using a manager’s marketing page as the contract

Marketing pages can become outdated when a share class closes, fees change or a redemption window is suspended. Use the dated offer document and written confirmation from the manager.

Sending money before the bank approves the route

A remittance can be delayed, rejected or returned if the purpose code, beneficiary details or documents are wrong. Obtain AD-bank instructions first and confirm the available LRS headroom.

Assuming fund-level tax means no investor filing

Fund-level provisions affect NAV; they do not answer every investor-level tax and reporting question. Get scheme-specific advice before investing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring currency and liquidity risk

A positive foreign-currency NAV can still produce a different rupee result after conversion costs and exchange-rate movement. A nominally open-ended fund can also impose notice periods or suspension provisions.

Pre-subscription checklist

  1. Write down the exact legal scheme name, share class and FME.
  2. Match the FME and scheme against current IFSCA records.
  3. Download and date the current offer document and fee schedule.
  4. Confirm resident-individual eligibility, CKYC status, PAN and source-of-funds requirements.
  5. Record objective, asset limits, geography, currency, concentration and leverage rules.
  6. Record minimums, dealing cut-offs, valuation, notice periods, gates, lock-ins and settlement.
  7. Ask your AD bank to confirm LRS permissibility, Form A2, purpose code, documents, charges, TCS treatment and beneficiary details.
  8. Obtain a tax review covering gains, distributions, exchange rates, foreign-asset reporting and records.
  9. Keep every application, bank and allotment document in one permanent file.
  10. Recheck authorisation, subscription status and payment instructions immediately before remitting.

When to pause or decline

Pause the transaction if the manager cannot provide a current offer document, if the scheme or FME cannot be matched to IFSCA records, if the beneficiary account differs from the legal entity without a clear explanation, or if the bank will not confirm the remittance route. Decline if you cannot explain the fund’s assets, liquidity, currency exposure and total costs in your own words. A regulated location does not remove investment risk or make an unsuitable product appropriate.

Bottom line for a resident Indian

The workable route is fund-specific: verify the scheme and FME with IFSCA, confirm that the fund accepts your resident status, complete KYC/CKYC, obtain your AD bank’s current LRS and Form A2 instructions, then assess liquidity, currency, costs and tax consequences from the binding documents. The DSP materials show one possible resident-individual process, not a universal guarantee. Check every detail again at the time of investment because authorisations, subscription windows, bank procedures and tax rules can change.
