When interest rates rise, prices of existing fixed-rate bonds generally fall. The practical response is not to sell everything: match maturities to your cash needs, limit duration when you need stability, stagger reinvestment dates, and consider floating-rate or inflation-linked securities only when their mechanics fit your objective. Every choice still carries trade-offs involving reinvestment, credit, inflation, liquidity, call and market-price risk.
Why rising rates push existing bond prices down
A bond’s coupon is fixed when it is issued. If newly issued bonds begin offering higher yields, an older bond with a lower coupon becomes less attractive at its original price. Its market price usually has to fall until the buyer’s expected return is competitive with current yields. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission summarizes the relationship this way: “A fundamental principle of bond investing is that market interest rates and bond prices generally move in opposite directions.”

For example, an SEC Investor Bulletin from June 26, 2013, illustrates a 10-year bond with a 3% coupon. If the market rate rises to 4% one year later, the example shows the bond trading at $925 and providing a 4% yield to maturity. That is an educational illustration, not a current quote or a forecast for a particular security.
The price change is a market-value change. It becomes an actual gain or loss if you sell before maturity. If you hold a bond that pays its promised interest and principal at maturity, interim quoted prices matter less to the final cash flows, but holding does not remove inflation, default, call or opportunity-cost risk.

Start with the date you need the money
Your first decision should be the time until the money is needed, not the direction of the headline rate. A bond that matures near a known spending date can reduce the chance that you must sell during an unfavorable price move. Shorter maturities generally have less interest-rate sensitivity than comparable longer maturities, although they mature sooner and expose you to reinvestment risk.
Money needed within about a year
Treasury bills mature in one year or less. They can limit the price sensitivity associated with a long-term bond, particularly when you intend to hold to maturity. The trade-off is that the proceeds become available quickly and must then be reinvested at whatever rates are available. A bill is not a guaranteed way to lock in today’s yield for several years.
Money needed in several years
Use the expected spending date to select a maturity rather than buying a long bond simply because its quoted yield is higher. A two- or five-year security may fit a liability better than a 10- or 30-year security whose price could move substantially before you need the funds. Check whether the bond can be called, whether you may need liquidity before maturity and whether the issuer’s credit quality matches your tolerance for default risk.

Longer maturities can provide longer income commitments, but they generally have greater interest-rate risk. If rates continue rising, a long, low-coupon bond can lose more market value than a shorter bond with otherwise similar credit quality. Duration helps estimate that exposure; it does not guarantee the exact result because yields, cash flows, credit spreads and embedded options can change.
Use maturity and duration to measure rate sensitivity
Maturity is the date principal is scheduled to be repaid. Duration is an estimate of how much a bond’s price may change for a given change in yields. Longer maturity and lower coupon generally mean greater sensitivity, all else equal, because more of the bond’s value depends on cash flows received farther in the future.
FINRA’s March 3, 2017, educational article gives a simplified illustration: a bond fund with a 10-year duration could decline about 10% if rates rose one percentage point. This is a rule-of-thumb illustration, not a prediction. Actual fund results depend on the holdings, yield-curve movements, credit spreads, fees, cash balances and investor flows.

When comparing bonds or funds, ask:
- What is the effective or modified duration, and is it measured for the current portfolio?
- How much of the expected return comes from coupon income versus a possible price change?
- Are there call, prepayment or other options that make the duration estimate less stable?
- Could credit spreads widen at the same time that Treasury yields rise?
Strategies that can fit a rising-rate environment
Keep maturities short for near-term cash
Short-term bonds or Treasury bills can reduce the size of a price decline relative to comparable long-term bonds. They also mature sooner, allowing you to reinvest at potentially higher rates. That benefit is not guaranteed: rates could fall before the reinvestment date, and repeatedly reinvesting short securities can produce a lower long-run return than a longer bond purchased earlier.
Build a maturity ladder
A bond ladder is a group of bonds with different maturity dates. Instead of having all principal mature at one time, you might schedule portions to mature in successive years. Each maturity can fund a planned expense or be reinvested at the then-current rate.
A ladder can spread reinvestment timing and reduce dependence on one interest-rate decision. It does not guarantee a higher return, protect principal if you sell early, eliminate credit or inflation risk, or outperform a bond fund. A ladder also requires you to track individual securities, cash flows and any call provisions.
Use a barbell when you need both liquidity and duration
A barbell combines short-term holdings with longer-term holdings rather than concentrating everything in the middle of the maturity range. The short side can provide liquidity and frequent reinvestment opportunities; the long side can provide longer income exposure. Because the long side remains rate-sensitive, this is not a way to remove risk. It is a deliberate trade-off that should match your cash-flow plan.
Consider floating-rate securities for variable income
Floating-rate notes reset their interest payments rather than locking one coupon for the entire term. The reset feature can make their income more responsive to short-term rates, but it does not make their market price or return risk-free. Future reference rates may fall, and non-Treasury floating-rate issuers still have credit risk.

What Treasury securities offer as rates change
| Security | Maturity terms described by Treasury | Key rate behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Treasury bills | One year or less | Short maturity can reduce price sensitivity relative to longer bonds; proceeds must be reinvested at maturity. |
| Treasury notes | 2, 3, 5, 7 or 10 years | Fixed-rate payments with price sensitivity that generally increases with maturity and duration. |
| Treasury bonds | 20 or 30 years | Long maturities generally carry greater interest-rate sensitivity. |
| Treasury floating-rate notes | Two years | Quarterly interest based on the 13-week Treasury bill index plus an auction-set spread; Treasury says the index resets weekly. |
Treasury securities are obligations of the U.S. government, but that guarantee concerns payment according to the security’s terms at maturity. It does not guarantee the market value you would receive if you sell earlier.

How Treasury floating-rate notes work
TreasuryDirect states that “The interest rate of an FRN changes, or ‘floats,’ over the life of the FRN.” The coupon is tied to the 13-week Treasury bill index plus a spread established at auction. Treasury says the index is reset weekly, while interest is paid quarterly.
This structure can make an FRN’s income more responsive to short-term Treasury rates than a conventional fixed-rate note. It does not ensure that your payments always rise. If the reference rate declines, the coupon and interest payments can decline as well. The note’s market price can also move before maturity, and a sale can involve a bid-ask spread or other transaction cost.
For a non-Treasury floating-rate bond, add issuer credit risk to the analysis. A higher spread may compensate for greater default risk rather than represent a free improvement in return.

TIPS and I bonds: inflation protection is different from rate protection
Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities
TIPS adjust their principal with changes in the Consumer Price Index. Interest is calculated using the inflation-adjusted principal, so the cash interest amount can change as principal changes. The inflation adjustment addresses a different risk from a rise in nominal market yields. A TIPS position can still lose market value if sold before maturity, particularly when real yields rise.
Series I savings bonds
Series I savings bonds combine a fixed rate with an inflation component that resets every six months. TreasuryDirect listed a 4.26% composite rate for bonds issued May 1 through October 31, 2026, including a 0.90% fixed rate. That was a dated rate snapshot; check the current TreasuryDirect terms before buying because rates change.
I bonds have separate purchase, redemption and holding rules from marketable Treasury securities. Confirm the current limits, redemption conditions and tax treatment that apply to your situation. Their inflation-linked formula does not guarantee that you will avoid every loss associated with rising nominal market rates, especially if your alternative is a marketable bond that can be sold at a different price.

Bond funds behave differently from individual bonds
A bond fund does not mature as a whole on one date. It continually buys and sells securities, so its net asset value changes as market yields change. A fund can lose value when the yields on its holdings rise, even if the fund continues paying income.
Duration is a useful first estimate of that sensitivity. The FINRA illustration of a 10-year-duration fund declining about 10% after a one-percentage-point rate increase is intentionally simplified and dated to 2017. It should not be used as a forecast for a particular fund. Review the fund’s current duration, maturity distribution, credit quality, call exposure, inflation exposure, fees and turnover.
A fund can provide diversification and daily liquidity, but you cannot lock in a specific principal repayment date for your shares. An individual bond held to maturity can have a known contractual repayment amount subject to issuer performance; a fund does not provide that same maturity outcome.
Compare an investment using the return you actually receive
The coupon is the bond’s stated interest rate on its face value. Yield to maturity incorporates the purchase price, coupon payments, time to maturity and repayment of principal, assuming the bond is held to maturity and payments occur as scheduled. A bond purchased below par can have a yield to maturity above its coupon; a bond purchased above par can have a lower yield to maturity.
| Question | Why it matters when rates are rising |
|---|---|
| When is the money needed? | A maturity near the spending date can reduce the need to sell during a price decline. |
| What is the duration? | It provides an estimate of price sensitivity to yield changes. |
| What is the yield to maturity? | It is more complete than the coupon for comparing a purchase price and scheduled cash flows. |
| Who is the issuer? | Credit quality and default risk can outweigh the benefit of a higher stated yield. |
| How liquid is it? | A thin market can make selling slower or more expensive; broker markdowns and commissions reduce proceeds. |
| Is inflation a concern? | Nominal payments may lose purchasing power; TIPS and I bonds use different inflation-linked mechanisms. |
| Can it be called? | The issuer may repay a callable bond early, forcing reinvestment when rates may be lower. |
| Which account and tax rules apply? | After-tax income and reporting can differ by jurisdiction, account type and security; use current rules for your circumstances. |
There is no universally best choice without a dated market comparison and the investor’s tax and cash-flow details. A higher yield may simply reflect higher credit, liquidity, call or duration risk.

A practical process for investing while rates rise
- List each cash need. Record the amount, date and how certain the date is. Separate emergency reserves from money that can remain invested.
- Set a maximum acceptable price fluctuation. Decide whether you could hold through a temporary decline or would need to sell. This determines how much duration you can tolerate.
- Choose the maturity structure. Use shorter maturities for near-term needs, a ladder for staggered obligations, or a longer maturity only when the added rate sensitivity fits the objective.
- Check the security’s yield and terms. Compare yield to maturity, coupon, duration, credit quality, call provisions, liquidity and transaction costs.
- Decide between individual bonds and a fund. An individual bond can have a scheduled maturity; a fund offers diversification and liquidity but continually reprices and has no single maturity date.
- Place the order with cost information in hand. Ask how the quoted price, markup or markdown, commission and spread affect your yield. For a secondary-market purchase, confirm whether the displayed price includes accrued interest.
- Document the plan. Note maturity dates, expected cash flows, reset rules and what would cause you to sell. Do not make a rate forecast the sole reason for a transaction.
- Review at scheduled intervals. Recheck duration, credit quality, inflation assumptions and upcoming cash needs rather than reacting to every rate announcement.
Should you sell existing bonds because rates are rising?
Not automatically. Selling converts an unrealized market decline into a realized result and may create a broker markdown, commission or bid-ask cost. Before selling, compare the bond’s remaining cash flows with the replacement investment after all costs and taxes that apply to you.

Ask whether the bond still matches your time horizon, whether the issuer’s credit quality has changed, whether a call is likely, how much duration remains and whether you need the money before maturity. If the bond is held to maturity and the issuer performs as promised, the contractual principal and interest schedule may still meet your objective despite a lower interim quote. Holding, however, does not protect purchasing power or eliminate the opportunity cost of owning a below-market coupon.
Risks that do not disappear when rates rise
- Interest-rate risk: Market value can fall when yields rise, including for U.S. Treasury bonds.
- Reinvestment risk: A maturing bond may have to be replaced at a lower rate than the original investment.
- Credit and default risk: The issuer may delay or fail to make payments. Higher yields can signal greater risk.
- Inflation risk: Fixed payments may buy less in the future. Inflation-linked securities address this risk through specific formulas, not through a guarantee against all losses.
- Liquidity risk: A security may be difficult or costly to sell when you want to exit.
- Call risk: An issuer may repay a callable bond early, leaving you to reinvest sooner than planned.
- Transaction and tax risk: Commissions, markups, markdowns, spreads and changing tax rules can reduce the return you keep.
Common mistakes to avoid
Chasing the highest coupon
Coupon alone does not reveal the purchase price, yield to maturity, duration or issuer risk. Compare the complete cash-flow and risk profile.
Assuming short-term means risk-free
A short maturity can reduce interest-rate sensitivity, but it still leaves reinvestment, inflation, liquidity and credit risks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTreating a floating rate as a fixed floor
An FRN’s reference rate can fall, and its price can move before maturity. The reset formula is a mechanism, not a promise of increasing income.
Confusing an inflation adjustment with a stable market price
TIPS principal adjusts with CPI, while market prices still fluctuate before maturity. I bonds follow separate purchase and redemption rules.
Using a duration estimate as a prediction
Duration gives an approximate first-order relationship. Actual results can differ because yields move unevenly across maturities and because credit, calls, fees and fund transactions affect returns.
How to monitor a rising-rate bond allocation
- Update the date and amount of each planned withdrawal.
- Check the current duration and maturity distribution of every bond fund.
- Confirm whether individual bonds remain investment-grade for your objective.
- Track upcoming maturities and decide in advance whether proceeds will be spent or reinvested.
- Review callable bonds for changed call probabilities.
- Verify current Treasury rates, I bond terms and tax rules before making a new purchase.
- Compare the expected after-cost, after-tax result rather than relying on a headline yield.
The bottom line for rising-rate markets
Investing in bonds while rates rise is mainly a matching exercise. Keep near-term money in appropriately short maturities, use a ladder when staggered cash flows matter, measure duration before accepting long-term price risk, and understand exactly how FRNs, TIPS, I bonds, individual bonds and funds reset or reprice. No structure removes every risk, and a decision to sell should follow your cash needs, credit assessment and transaction costs—not the rate headline alone.
