To invest in an electric-vehicle index fund in India, first verify that a live scheme actually tracks the Nifty EV & New Age Automotive Index (or identify the different overseas benchmark used by an international fund of fund). Then use either a SEBI-registered broker and demat account to buy an exchange-traded fund (ETF), or the asset-management company (AMC) or regulated distributor to buy an index mutual fund or fund of funds (FoF). Before placing an order, check the current ticker, exchange listing, plan type, benchmark variant, total expense ratio, tracking difference, liquidity, exit load and current tax rules.
This is a narrow thematic allocation, not a substitute for a diversified Indian equity portfolio. The index limits individual and group weights, but it remains exposed to vehicle demand, battery technology, commodity prices, regulation, execution and valuation risk.

What the Nifty EV & New Age Automotive Index represents
The Nifty EV & New Age Automotive Index is an index, not an investment account. It is designed to represent Nifty 500 companies involved in electric vehicles and new-age automotive activity. Eligible businesses can include vehicle manufacturers, hybrid and hydrogen-vehicle businesses, batteries, battery components, relevant raw materials, autonomous vehicles and suppliers of autonomous-vehicle technology.
NSE Indices gives the index a base date of April 2, 2018 and a base value of 1,000. Those figures describe how the benchmark was launched and calculated; they are not a return promise or a minimum price for a fund.

Weight limits and maintenance
| Methodology feature | Rule | What it means for an investor |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible universe | Nifty 500 companies involved in EV or new-age vehicle production or supply, batteries, components, raw materials or related technology | The portfolio can contain several types of companies rather than only car manufacturers. |
| Group A aggregate cap | Vehicle manufacturers classified in Group A are capped at 40% in aggregate | Manufacturers cannot occupy the entire index, although the remaining constituents may still be correlated. |
| Individual Group A cap | Each Group A stock is capped at 8% | A single large manufacturer is limited, subject to the methodology in force at the time. |
| Other-stock cap | Each stock outside Group A is capped at 4% | Smaller suppliers, materials and technology companies also have individual limits. |
| Rebalancing | Quarterly | Weights can change during the year as the index is rebalanced. |
| Reconstitution | Semi-annually | Constituents can be added or removed twice a year. |
The 40%, 8% and 4% limits are diversification controls, not safety guarantees. Companies in different categories can still fall together when interest rates, vehicle demand, regulation or technology expectations change.
At the index’s launch, NSE Indices CEO Mukesh Agarwal said it “will pave the way for asset managers to invest in the electric vehicle and new-age automotive market, thus offering investors a new investment avenue.” The statement describes the intended opportunity; it does not establish future performance.
Which investment products and routes exist
The NSE’s official directory lists the Nifty EV & New Age Automotive benchmark with ETF products associated with Groww Mutual Fund and Mirae Asset Mutual Fund. SEBI filing records also show product families involving a Groww ETF or ETF FoF, a Mirae Asset ETF, and ICICI Prudential ETF or ETF FoF filings. A filing or directory entry confirms that a product family and regulatory record exist; it does not prove that a particular scheme is currently open for fresh purchases, listed with adequate liquidity or available under every plan type.

Domestic ETF tracking the Nifty EV index
An ETF holds a portfolio intended to track the benchmark and trades on an exchange during market hours. You need a trading account and demat account with a SEBI-registered broker. The market price can be above or below the fund’s underlying net asset value (NAV), particularly when trading is thin or the market is moving quickly.
Domestic index mutual fund or ETF FoF
An index mutual fund is bought from the AMC or a regulated distributor at the applicable NAV rather than through an exchange order. An ETF FoF buys units of an ETF and gives you a mutual-fund route, which can be operationally simpler for some investors but adds another layer of fund expenses and tracking considerations. Check whether the scheme offers direct and regular plans, systematic investment plans (SIPs), an exit load and the applicable cut-off time.
Overseas electric-vehicle fund of fund
A separate scheme document describes Navi Electric Vehicles and Driving Technology FoF. It is an open-ended FoF investing in overseas ETFs or index funds based on the STOXX Global Electric Vehicles & Driving Technology Net Index. The document labels this product “Very High Risk.” It is international thematic exposure, not a fund tracking India’s Nifty EV & New Age Automotive Index. Because the underlying investments are overseas, evaluate foreign-market, currency, jurisdiction and applicable tax considerations in addition to ordinary equity risk.

Decide whether this belongs in your portfolio
Start with the purpose of the investment. If you need a core holding for long-term wealth building, a broad, diversified equity allocation generally addresses that job more directly than a single industry theme. An EV index fund can instead be considered a satellite allocation for an investor who accepts large fluctuations and wants targeted exposure after establishing an appropriate diversified portfolio.

- Time horizon: Use only money that can remain invested through a complete business and technology cycle. The index can experience prolonged periods of weak performance.
- Risk capacity: A high tolerance for loss is necessary; the methodology’s weight caps do not remove equity-market or sector risk.
- Portfolio overlap: Check existing holdings. A separate automobile, battery, technology or materials fund can make your combined exposure much more concentrated than the index appears.
- Goal and liquidity: Do not use a volatile thematic fund for a near-term expense or an emergency reserve.
- Geographic choice: Decide whether you specifically want Indian companies or are comfortable with an overseas benchmark and its additional operational risks.
How to buy a Nifty EV ETF through a demat account
- Open or verify the account. Use a SEBI-registered broker with an active trading and demat account. Complete the broker’s identity, bank and segment requirements before attempting an order.
- Identify the live scheme. On the AMC and exchange websites, match the fund’s full legal name and verified ticker to the Nifty EV & New Age Automotive benchmark. Confirm whether the benchmark is a price index or a total-return index and read the latest SID and factsheet.
- Check tradability. Look at the current bid, ask, quoted quantity, recent volume and indicative NAV if provided. A narrow spread and meaningful volume can reduce the cost of entering or exiting, but liquidity can change.
- Review costs. Record the total expense ratio, brokerage, exchange and statutory charges, any applicable account charges, and the fund’s tracking difference. The broker’s tariff and the scheme documents are the controlling sources.
- Choose an order type. A limit order lets you specify the maximum purchase price and can be prudent when the spread is wide or volume is low. A market order can execute at an unexpectedly different price in a thin market. The order screen’s live data, not a delayed article, should guide the decision.
- Place and verify the order. Select the correct exchange, quantity and product type, submit the order, and confirm the execution. Check that the units appear in the demat account after the exchange’s stated settlement process.
- Keep the records. Save the contract note, trade confirmation, charges and periodic holding statement. These records are needed to reconcile the position and support tax reporting.
Settlement timing, brokerage and other charges are intermediary-specific and can change. Confirm them in the broker’s current tariff and contract note.
How to buy an index mutual fund or FoF
- Confirm the scheme structure. Determine whether you are buying a fund that directly tracks the Nifty EV index, an ETF FoF, or the separate overseas electric-vehicle FoF. Do not treat these benchmarks as interchangeable.
- Read the current documents. Obtain the SID, key information memorandum (KIM) and factsheet from the AMC or regulated distributor. Check the objective, benchmark variant, portfolio rules, direct or regular plan, total expense ratio, exit load, minimum investment and redemption rules.
- Check NAV and cut-off rules. Mutual-fund orders receive the NAV determined under the applicable rules and cut-off time. The NAV may not be known when you submit the order. Confirm how payment realization affects the applicable NAV.
- Choose the purchase method. Use the AMC or a regulated distributor. If an SIP is available, verify its minimum amount, instalment date, mandate process, pause or cancellation rules and whether the option applies to the exact plan you selected.
- Submit and retain confirmation. Check the folio, plan, option, amount and bank details before confirming. Keep the account statement, transaction confirmation and tax documents.
- Check layered costs in an FoF. An FoF can incur its own expenses as well as expenses in the underlying ETF or index fund. Read the documents for the combined effect and any restrictions on the underlying investment.
Comparison checklist before choosing a scheme
| Factor | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | ETF, direct index mutual fund or FoF? | Determines how you transact, how NAV is applied and whether another fund layer exists. |
| Benchmark | Nifty EV & New Age Automotive, STOXX Global Electric Vehicles & Driving Technology Net Index, or another benchmark? | Defines geography, constituents and risk; similarly named funds can have materially different portfolios. |
| Benchmark variant | Price-return or total-return version? | Dividends and performance comparisons differ between variants. |
| Tracking quality | What are the latest tracking difference and tracking error figures? | Shows how closely the fund has followed its stated benchmark after costs and implementation effects. |
| Total expense ratio | What is the current TER, and does an FoF add underlying-fund expenses? | Expenses reduce the return delivered to investors. |
| ETF liquidity | What are the live spread, quoted depth and recent volume? | Thin trading can increase execution cost and make exits harder. |
| Plan and channel | Direct or regular plan? AMC, distributor or broker? | Plan expenses, service arrangements and transaction processes can differ. |
| Exit load | Is a fee charged for redeeming within a specified period? | Affects the cost of changing the allocation. |
| Minimum and SIP | What is the minimum lump-sum amount and is an SIP offered? | Determines whether the route fits your cash flow and investing habit. |
| Tax treatment | How is this exact product taxed for your investor status and holding period? | ETF, equity mutual fund and overseas FoF rules can differ and can change with law. |
| Operational history | When did the scheme launch, and is there enough trading or NAV history? | New or thinly traded products provide less operating history and can have wider spreads. |
Costs, taxation and record-keeping
Costs you can see at purchase or sale
For an ETF, account for the bid-ask spread, brokerage, exchange charges, statutory levies and any broker or demat fees. The spread is an economic cost even when it is not shown as a separate invoice. For a mutual fund, review the TER, any exit load and distributor-related plan costs. For an FoF, inspect both the FoF’s expenses and the expenses of the underlying funds.
Do not compare a fund’s headline TER alone. A low TER does not compensate for a wide ETF spread, persistent tracking difference, poor execution or a benchmark that does not match your objective.
Tax questions to verify
The appropriate tax treatment depends on the product structure, the underlying assets, your tax residence and the holding period. Rules can change, and overseas FoFs may not receive the same treatment as a domestic equity ETF or equity-oriented mutual fund. Read the current scheme tax disclosure and verify the position under the tax law in force when you transact. Keep contract notes, account statements, purchase dates, sale dates, expenses and redemption records; consult a qualified tax professional for a personal calculation.

Risks specific to an EV and new-automotive theme
Demand and economic cycles
Vehicle purchases are sensitive to income, financing costs, fleet investment and economic conditions. A slowdown can affect manufacturers, component suppliers and technology companies at the same time.
Commodity and supply-chain exposure
Battery and vehicle economics depend on materials, processing capacity and supply chains. Changes in input prices, availability or trade policy can affect margins and project economics.
Technology and substitution risk
Battery chemistry, charging systems, software, autonomous-driving capabilities and hydrogen technologies can develop unevenly. A company that appears well positioned today can lose share if another technology or supplier becomes more effective.

Regulatory and policy risk
Subsidies, emissions rules, safety requirements, import duties and local-content policies can alter demand and costs. Policy changes can affect several index constituents simultaneously.

Valuation and execution risk
Thematic enthusiasm can push valuations ahead of earnings. Companies also face manufacturing, scaling, warranty, software, capital-allocation and governance challenges. A capped weight can limit the damage from one holding without preventing a broad sector re-rating.
Liquidity and tracking risk
A newly launched or lightly traded ETF may have a wide spread and limited order-book depth. An index fund or FoF can diverge from its benchmark because of expenses, cash balances, taxes, corporate actions, transaction costs or implementation constraints. Review tracking figures rather than assuming that the word “index” means exact replication.
How to monitor the holding after purchase
- Review the official factsheet periodically. Check the latest constituents, weights, TER, tracking difference and risk disclosures.
- Watch your total portfolio exposure. Include direct shares and other funds with automobile, battery, materials or technology holdings when calculating the theme’s size.
- Check ETF trading conditions before each additional order. Spreads and volume are live market conditions, not permanent characteristics.
- Rebalance by allocation, not by headlines. Set a target range appropriate to your plan and consider reducing or adding when the holding moves outside that range, subject to tax and transaction costs.
- Reconfirm documents when the scheme changes. Read notices about benchmark changes, mergers, plan changes, fees, exit loads or fund-manager and service-provider changes.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying a similarly named fund: Match the legal scheme name and benchmark in the SID, not just the word “EV” in an app search.
- Assuming an index is diversified enough: Read the actual sector and constituent exposures; the index is still a concentrated theme.
- Using a market order in a thin ETF: Inspect the live spread and consider a limit order.
- Confusing a filing with availability: Confirm that subscriptions and exchange trading are currently open.
- Ignoring the direct/regular distinction: Check the plan selected and its expense and distributor arrangements.
- Comparing unlike benchmarks: A domestic Nifty EV fund and an overseas STOXX-based FoF answer different portfolio needs.
- Projecting past returns: The 2018 base date and a historical chart do not predict future returns.
- Forgetting tax and exit costs: Check current rules and loads before switching or redeeming.
A practical decision rule
Proceed only when you can identify a currently available scheme, explain its benchmark and structure, tolerate a large thematic drawdown, and document the costs and tax treatment. For a domestic ETF, that means a verified ticker, acceptable spread and volume, and a broker account ready for settlement. For a mutual fund or FoF, it means a current SID, clear NAV and cut-off rules, and an understanding of direct or regular plan costs. If you cannot verify those points, wait rather than buying an unconfirmed product.
The Nifty EV & New Age Automotive Index can provide focused exposure to India’s electric and new-automotive ecosystem, but its caps and maintenance rules do not turn it into a low-risk core holding. Treat it as one component of a diversified plan and review whether the allocation still matches your objective after the purchase.
