How to Invest in AI Without Picking Individual Companies

You can invest in the growth of artificial intelligence without selecting individual stocks by using a broad-market index fund or ETF, an AI or technology thematic ETF, or a direct-indexing portfolio. The choice is mainly a trade-off between diversification, the amount of AI exposure you want, customization, fees, taxes, and how much tracking error you can tolerate.

A broad fund gives you the widest spread but may have only indirect or uneven exposure to AI. A thematic fund makes the AI bet more explicit, but its holdings can be concentrated and volatile. Direct indexing owns many securities from an index in your own account and can allow customization, but it adds implementation decisions, possible tax complexity, and potentially higher costs. None of these options removes the risk of losing money.

What “investing in AI” means when you do not pick stocks

Artificial intelligence is an industry theme, not a single security. Companies that design computing hardware, provide cloud infrastructure, develop software, collect data, build industrial systems, or use AI in their ordinary businesses may all benefit from the technology. Their businesses, valuations, geographic exposure, and sensitivity to economic conditions can be very different.

Instead of trying to identify the one company that will win, you can buy a portfolio that owns many securities. The portfolio may be assembled by a fund provider, by a direct-indexing service, or by a broad market benchmark. You still decide how much of your overall portfolio to put at risk and which type of exposure fits your objectives.

The three practical routes

Route What it does What to compare Main risks
Broad-market index mutual fund or ETF Tracks a broad benchmark and spreads exposure across many holdings Total expense ratio, benchmark, holdings, concentration, tracking difference, and account tax treatment Market loss, indirect or uneven AI exposure, and overlap with other funds
AI or technology thematic ETF Targets companies selected by a custom or thematic index Index rules, top holdings, sector and geographic concentration, fees, turnover, liquidity, and tracking history Theme concentration, volatility, complexity, overlap, and higher costs
Direct indexing Buys many or all securities in an index directly and may let you customize the portfolio Minimums, trading costs, tax-loss-harvesting process, customization limits, tracking difference, and advisory fee Higher fees, tax complexity, deviations from the index, and missed rebounds

A pooled fund avoids choosing a single company, but “AI fund” does not automatically mean diversified. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has cautioned that non-traditional index funds can behave differently from the overall market and may be less diversified than investors expect. Its practical instruction is: “Make sure your investments are as diversified as you think they are.”

Choose the exposure before choosing the product

Start with the role AI should play in your portfolio. This prevents a product label from making the decision for you.

Use a broad-market fund for a core portfolio

A broad-market index mutual fund or ETF owns a wide set of companies according to a published benchmark. You are accepting the market’s mix rather than making a concentrated technology bet. AI exposure may appear through companies that are obvious technology providers, but it may also come through financial, health-care, industrial, consumer, or other businesses that use the technology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This route is appropriate when your priority is diversification and simple maintenance. It does not give you a guaranteed or precisely measurable percentage of AI exposure. No current AI exposure percentage is published for any broad fund, and holdings change; check the fund’s current holdings and prospectus rather than relying on a description or a past allocation.

Use a thematic ETF for a deliberate AI tilt

An AI or technology thematic ETF uses a custom index or selection process to target a theme. The index might emphasize particular parts of the value chain, but the name alone does not tell you how the portfolio is built. Two funds with similar names can have different eligibility rules, weighting methods, rebalancing schedules, countries, sectors, and top holdings.

A thematic fund can be a satellite position around a diversified core. It should not be treated as a substitute for checking concentration. Read the index methodology, list the largest holdings, inspect sector and geographic weights, and look for repeated holdings in the rest of your portfolio. A fund can hold dozens of securities while still being driven by a small number of positions or one industry.

Use direct indexing when customization has a clear purpose

Direct indexing purchases many or all of the securities in a specified index directly in your account instead of buying one fund share. FINRA notes that fractional-share technology has made this approach more accessible to retail investors. Depending on the service, you may be able to exclude companies, manage a concentrated legacy position, or use a tax-loss-harvesting process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Direct indexing is not identical to owning the index fund. Your account may omit securities, trade at different times, hold cash temporarily, or apply your customization rules. FINRA warns that investor choices can make returns differ markedly from the index and that fees may be higher than for a typical passive portfolio. A tax feature is not automatically a benefit: selling and replacing positions can create wash-sale, tax-reporting, or future-gain considerations that require professional advice.

A step-by-step process for selecting an approach

  1. Define the objective. Decide whether you want a diversified long-term portfolio, a measured technology tilt, or customization for taxes and personal constraints. Write down your time horizon, ability to tolerate losses, need for withdrawals, and existing exposure to technology.
  2. Map your current holdings. List every fund, retirement account, taxable account, and major employer stock position. Look through fund holdings where available. This reveals whether a new AI fund would duplicate companies you already own.
  3. Choose a route. Select a broad-market fund when diversification is the priority, a thematic ETF when you intentionally accept concentration for a limited tilt, or direct indexing when customization or tax management justifies the added complexity.
  4. Read the primary documents. Obtain the current prospectus, shareholder report, holdings file, and index methodology for a fund. For direct indexing, read the advisory agreement, fee schedule, trading policy, tax-loss-harvesting disclosures, and customization rules.
  5. Measure concentration. Record the largest holdings, sector weights, geographic exposure, number of positions, and how often the portfolio changes. Compare these figures with your existing investments, not in isolation.
  6. Compare all costs. Note the expense ratio or advisory fee, trading costs, bid-ask spread where relevant, account fees, and any tax consequences. Ask what you pay to buy, own, and sell. A lower sticker fee is not the only consideration, but recurring fees reduce the return that remains for you.
  7. Verify the provider. Confirm that the securities firm, adviser, platform, or professional is registered or licensed where required. Use the independent professional lookup at Investor.gov rather than a link supplied by a promotional message.
  8. Set an allocation rule. Decide in advance how much the position may grow before you rebalance, how often you will review it, and what event would make you sell. A written rule reduces the temptation to chase headlines.
  9. Place the trade or open the service. Confirm the fund’s exact legal name, share class, ticker if applicable, order type, account, and tax status before submitting. For direct indexing, review the initial basket and any excluded securities before authorizing trades.
  10. Monitor the reasons, not daily prices. Review holdings, fees, index changes, tracking difference, and your total allocation at the interval set in your plan. Do not change the strategy solely because a news cycle makes AI look temporarily popular or unpopular.

How to inspect an AI or technology ETF

The SEC recommends asking four questions before buying a fund: “What fees and expenses can I expect to pay for buying, owning, and selling this fund?”; “What specific risks are associated with this fund?”; “How is the makeup of the fund’s index determined? What are the actual holdings?”; and “How does the fund’s investment strategy fit with my investment goals?” Use the fund’s current documents to answer each one.

Read the index methodology

Find out how a company qualifies for inclusion, how the index defines AI or technology, whether revenue is required, how companies are weighted, and when the index rebalances. A rules-based index can still produce a concentrated portfolio if a few companies receive large weights or if the eligible universe is narrow.

Check actual holdings and overlap

Do not infer diversification from the number of lines in a holdings list. Add the largest positions and compare them with your broad-market funds, sector funds, employer stock, and other accounts. If several products own the same companies, your economic exposure may be much larger than it appears from the number of funds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review turnover, liquidity, and tracking

Frequent rebalancing can increase transaction costs and taxable distributions. A fund that trades infrequently may still diverge from its index because of expenses, sampling, corporate actions, or cash. Compare the fund’s published tracking history with its benchmark and examine trading volume and spreads before placing a large order. No universal “good” threshold is published; judge the figures against your objective and account type.

Fees are a return drag, not a footnote

The SEC states that fees and expenses reduce investment returns and that, when holdings perform identically, the lower-cost fund generally produces the higher return. That is a comparison principle, not a promise that the cheapest product will outperform every other product.

For a fund, identify the total expense ratio and any purchase, redemption, account, or transaction charges. For an ETF, also consider the bid-ask spread and the possibility that your trade price differs from the fund’s net asset value. For direct indexing, add the advisory fee, trading costs, custody or platform charges, and the cost of implementing exclusions or tax management. Ask whether a quoted price is recurring, waived temporarily, or limited to a particular account size; no current prices or minimums are published for any provider.

Compare costs on the amount you will actually invest and over the period you expect to hold the position. A small annual percentage applied to a large balance can become material. Taxes, trading behavior, and the portfolio’s tracking difference can matter as much as the headline fee, so record the complete cost structure before deciding.

Tax and account considerations

The right implementation depends on whether you are investing in a taxable brokerage account, an employer plan, an individual retirement account, or another account with its own rules. The same fund can produce a different after-tax result in different accounts. Check the account’s tax treatment, contribution and withdrawal rules, and the fund’s distribution history before investing.

Taxable accounts

In a taxable account, sales and fund distributions can create reportable gains or income. A thematic ETF’s turnover and a direct-indexing service’s trades may affect when those events occur. Keep statements and cost-basis records, and do not sell solely to harvest a loss without understanding replacement-security and wash-sale rules.

Retirement accounts

Retirement accounts can change the tax timing of contributions, distributions, and trades, but they do not eliminate investment risk or make a concentrated theme prudent. Check the specific plan menu and account rules rather than assuming every ETF or direct-indexing service is available.

Direct-indexing tax management

Ask exactly how tax-loss harvesting works: which lots may be sold, how replacement securities are selected, how long restrictions last, how the service handles wash-sale issues across linked accounts, and what happens when a losing position rebounds. Harvesting can create a tax result while still leaving you with market exposure, but it can also produce a different portfolio and future tax obligations. A tax professional can evaluate your personal situation.

Verification and fraud guardrails

A joint alert from the SEC, the North American Securities Administrators Association, and FINRA dated January 25, 2024, warns about unregistered or unlicensed platforms claiming to use AI, guaranteed-return promises, pump-and-dump promotions, deepfake impersonation, and AI-generated investment information that may be inaccurate or fabricated.

  • Verify the firm, adviser, and platform independently through Investor.gov or the relevant regulator before sending money.
  • Read the prospectus, advisory agreement, fee schedule, privacy terms, and risk disclosures; do not rely on a social-media post or sales page.
  • Treat “guaranteed,” “risk-free,” or unusually precise return claims as a warning sign. AI technology does not change the basic risk of owning securities.
  • Confirm the destination account and contact details using a source you found independently, especially after a message, call, or video appears to come from a professional.
  • Use AI tools, if at all, for organizing questions or documents—not as the sole source for a buy or sell decision.

The regulators put the warning plainly: “Be cautious about using AI-generated information to make investment decisions or to attempt to predict changes in the stock market’s direction or in the price of a security.”

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming a thematic label guarantees diversification

Problem: You buy a fund because its name says AI and never inspect its index or holdings.

Correction: Read the methodology, list the top holdings and sector weights, and compare them with everything else you own. If the portfolio is narrower than expected, reduce the allocation or use a broader route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting funds instead of underlying companies

Problem: Several funds make the portfolio look diversified even though they own many of the same securities.

Correction: Look through the holdings and estimate your combined exposure to repeated positions and industries.

Choosing on expense ratio alone

Problem: A low fee distracts you from tracking difference, spreads, turnover, tax costs, or a poor fit with your objective.

Correction: Compare the complete cost of buying, owning, and selling, together with the portfolio’s rules and implementation quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting direct indexing to match an index exactly

Problem: Exclusions, fractional-share limits, cash, trading schedules, and tax decisions cause the account to diverge.

Correction: Ask how the service measures and reports tracking difference, which decisions you control, and what deviations are expected.

Following AI-generated predictions

Problem: A chatbot, synthetic video, or polished website presents a confident forecast or a “secret” AI strategy.

Correction: Verify the registration and documents independently, seek primary disclosures, and make the decision using a written allocation plan rather than a prediction.

A decision framework you can use

If your priority is… Start by evaluating… Questions to resolve
Maximum diversification and simplicity A broad-market index mutual fund or ETF What benchmark does it track, how much overlap do I have, and what are the total costs?
A measured AI or technology tilt A thematic ETF as a limited satellite allocation How narrow is the index, what are the top holdings, how often does it rebalance, and can I tolerate the volatility?
Exclusions, concentrated legacy holdings, or hands-on tax management Direct indexing What is the minimum, what are all fees, how are trades and taxes handled, and how far may returns deviate from the index?
Uncertainty about the right allocation A written investment plan and an appropriately licensed professional What loss can I tolerate, when will I need the money, and how will I rebalance?

There is no universally correct AI allocation. A route is sensible only when its diversification, concentration, costs, taxes, and operational demands match your circumstances. If you cannot explain the index rules, holdings, fees, and risks in your own words, pause before investing.

What to review after you invest

  • Holdings: Check whether the largest positions or sector weights have changed materially.
  • Index rules: Read notices about methodology changes, reconstitutions, or a change in the fund’s objective.
  • Costs: Compare the current expense ratio, advisory fee, spreads, and account charges with the figures you recorded.
  • Tracking: Note the difference between the portfolio and its benchmark over the period the provider reports.
  • Allocation: Rebalance according to your prewritten rule instead of reacting to short-term performance.
  • Provider status: Recheck registration if the firm changes names, ownership, contacts, or the platform used to access the account.

Fund holdings, fees, index rules, and availability change. Before each new investment or material increase, use the current prospectus, shareholder report, holdings data, and account disclosures.
