How to Invest in AI Companies Without Betting on a Single Winner

The most robust way to invest in AI without trying to identify one winning company is to diversify at the portfolio level. A broad-market fund can form a diversified core that may already include businesses developing or using AI; a thematic AI or robotics fund can add a deliberate tilt across several companies. The thematic label does not make a fund broadly diversified, and neither approach removes investment risk.

Before buying, match the vehicle to your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance, then inspect its holdings, concentration, overlap, index rules, costs, trading spread, geography and prospectus. The following framework helps you make that comparison without relying on a single stock forecast.

What it means to invest in AI without picking a winner

Investing in a single AI company concentrates your result in one management team, balance sheet, technology roadmap, valuation and regulatory outcome. If that company disappoints, the position can fall sharply even while other AI businesses succeed. Diversification spreads money among investments so that one failure has less influence on the whole portfolio. It reduces company-specific risk, but it cannot eliminate losses or guarantee a profit. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains the relationship between asset allocation and diversification in its Investor.gov guidance.

A fund is simply a container for multiple securities; its actual diversification depends on what the container holds. An ETF owning dozens of companies in one narrow industry can still be highly exposed to the same economic, geographic or regulatory shock. The SEC cautions: “But a mutual fund or ETF won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).” That is why the relevant question is not only how many holdings a fund has, but also how different those holdings and their risks really are.

Broad-market and thematic funds serve different jobs

A broad-market fund generally follows an index covering many companies and sectors. Its objective is wide market exposure rather than a particular technology theme. Because large public companies increasingly use or develop AI, such a fund may already give you indirect participation in the technology without requiring a separate AI purchase. You must check the fund’s actual holdings and index methodology to know how much exposure it provides.

A thematic AI or robotics fund intentionally narrows its selection to companies connected to an investment idea. It can spread a targeted position across multiple businesses, but the portfolio may remain concentrated by sector, industry, country, currency or index design. A thematic fund therefore works as an optional satellite holding, not as proof that the rest of your portfolio is diversified.

Comparison point Broad-market exposure Thematic AI or robotics exposure
Primary objective Cover a wide set of companies and industries in the selected market or region Track a narrower AI, robotics or related theme
Company breadth Usually broader across sectors; verify the index and number of holdings Multiple companies, but concentrated in businesses meeting the theme’s rules
Top-holding risk Depends on the index; large companies can still dominate Often more sensitive to a small group of leading constituents; inspect current weights
Overlap with an existing portfolio May already own many large technology companies Can duplicate those positions while adding smaller or overseas companies
Index selection rules Typically market-cap, country or broad-segment rules Theme definitions, screens, revenue tests, rebalancing schedules and eligibility rules
Geography and currency Determined by the broad index; may be domestic, global or regional Can introduce a deliberate concentration in particular countries or currencies
Costs and trading Compare the fund’s expense ratio and bid-ask spread Compare the same items; specialized strategies may cost more, but the actual figures are fund-specific
Best use in this framework Potential diversified core, subject to your full asset allocation Optional targeted tilt after you understand the additional concentration

This is a comparison framework, not an allocation prescription. The SEC says the suitable mix of investments depends on your risk tolerance and time horizon; no universal percentage of AI exposure is appropriate for every investor. Read the SEC’s asset-allocation guidance before deciding how a fund fits with your other holdings.

A step-by-step portfolio process

1. Define the job the investment must do

Write down whether you are seeking long-term growth, a diversified core, a targeted technology tilt or another objective. Note when you may need the money and how much volatility you could tolerate without selling in panic. A fund’s AI label cannot answer those questions for you. If the money has a short time horizon or a major spending purpose, a concentrated technology position may be inconsistent with that purpose.

2. Inventory what you already own

List every stock, mutual fund and ETF in your accounts, then identify the largest underlying companies and countries. Look through fund holdings rather than relying on fund names. A broad-market holding may already contain many prominent AI developers, semiconductor manufacturers, cloud companies or software businesses. Buying a thematic fund on top of it may increase the same companies’ combined weight instead of adding independent exposure.

Calculate overlap at the company level where the information is available. Also look for exposure to the same industry, supplier chain, country or currency even when the company names differ. Overlap is a portfolio-level issue: two funds can each look diversified in isolation while producing a concentrated combined position.

3. Decide whether you need a deliberate theme

If your existing diversified holdings already meet your objective, adding a theme is optional, not necessary for owning AI-related businesses. If you want a deliberate tilt, define the risk you are accepting: a narrower sector, a particular index methodology, foreign-market exposure or greater dependence on a few constituents. State the reason in writing so the purchase is not driven only by recent headlines.

4. Compare candidate funds using primary documents

Open the current issuer page, holdings file, summary prospectus and full prospectus. Record the information as of its publication or holdings date, because weights, fees and constituents change. The SEC’s ETF bulletin explains the features and risks to review before trading.

5. Place an order that reflects ETF mechanics

ETFs trade on an exchange throughout the day at a market price. That price can be above or below the fund’s net asset value (NAV), which is calculated from the value of the underlying holdings. Review the current spread between the bid and ask, particularly when a fund or its underlying markets are less liquid. A market order accepts the available price; a limit order lets you set the highest price you will pay or the lowest price you will accept, but it may not execute. Check the order preview, quantity and estimated value before submitting.

6. Monitor for changes without turning the theme into a trading contest

Set a review schedule that matches your overall plan rather than reacting to every AI headline. Recheck the fund’s objective, holdings, concentration, expense ratio, spread and prospectus when the issuer updates them. If a position becomes larger than you intended because of price gains, follow your pre-set rebalancing rules instead of making an improvised forecast about which company will win.

How to evaluate an AI or robotics ETF

Holdings and concentration

Start with the complete holdings list and the percentage in each position. Count how much the largest five and ten holdings represent, then examine whether those companies are economically similar. A fund with many small positions can still be driven by a few large ones. Check whether the displayed weights are net-asset weights, whether cash or derivatives are included, and the date of the snapshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Index objective and methodology

Read the index description in the prospectus. Determine how a company qualifies as an AI constituent, whether eligibility is based on revenue, business description or another screen, and how often the index rebalances. Understand position caps, minimum-size rules, country limits and what happens when a company no longer meets the criteria. A fund may own chipmakers, industrial automation firms, software vendors, medical-technology companies or other businesses that benefit from the theme without being pure-play AI companies.

Costs and the effect of fees

The expense ratio is deducted from fund assets and reduces the dollars left invested to compound. Trading commissions may be zero at some brokers, but the bid-ask spread and the difference between market price and NAV are still transaction costs. Compare the recurring expense ratio with the fund’s objective and the alternatives available in your account. The SEC’s fee-and-expense bulletin uses hypothetical illustrations; those examples are not forecasts of any particular fund’s return.

Geography, currency and market access

Identify where the fund is domiciled, where its holdings are incorporated and which exchanges they use. International securities can add currency movements, different disclosure standards, political risk and trading-hour mismatches. A fund listed in the United States can still own companies from many countries. The availability of a fund, its tax treatment and investor protections differ outside the United States, so readers in other jurisdictions must check local rules and products rather than assuming a U.S. ticker is accessible or suitable.

Prospectus risks and trading details

Read the summary prospectus section describing principal risks, including concentration, foreign securities, small-company exposure, tracking error, liquidity and volatility. Confirm the ticker, exchange, distribution policy and whether the fund uses securities lending, derivatives or other techniques. The latest prospectus controls when a website summary and an older article disagree.

Illustrative U.S.-listed examples and what their snapshots show

The following figures are dated disclosures, not recommendations or forecasts. They show why a holding count alone does not establish broad diversification.

Robotics and artificial-intelligence thematic fund

The issuer page for Global X BOTZ stated that the fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the Indxx Global Robotics & Artificial Intelligence Thematic Index. Its displayed data dated September 11, 2026, showed 83 holdings and a 0.68% total expense ratio. The same snapshot listed these five positions:

Holding Weight shown on Sep. 11, 2026
FANUC 8.13%
ABB 7.95%
Keyence 7.90%
Intuitive Surgical 7.79%
NVIDIA 7.63%

Those five positions represented a meaningful portion of the fund at that date, despite the 83-holding count. Weights move with prices, creations and redemptions, and index changes. Confirm the current holdings, expense information and prospectus on the BOTZ issuer page and in the 2026 summary prospectus before using the fund in a comparison.

Artificial-intelligence and big-data thematic fund

The issuer page for Global X AIQ stated that the fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index. Its displayed data dated October 2, 2026, showed 88 holdings. That source does not establish a complete side-by-side comparison with BOTZ, including current expenses, concentration or suitability. Verify the latest holdings, index methodology, costs and prospectus on the AIQ issuer page and the 2026 summary prospectus. The different theme definitions mean that two funds with similar names can have materially different companies, countries and risks.

Should you buy individual AI stocks or an AI ETF?

An individual stock gives you direct exposure to one company’s results and a potentially large upside or downside. You can study its financial statements, competitive position and valuation, but you bear the full consequences of being wrong about that company. Owning several individual stocks can reduce single-company risk, yet it requires enough capital, research and discipline to maintain genuine diversification.

An ETF bundles securities and handles index rebalancing according to its rules. It can make diversification operationally simpler, but you surrender control over the exact holdings and accept the fund’s fees, tracking differences, concentration and methodology. The ETF does not protect you from a falling sector or a broad market decline. The better choice depends on your existing portfolio, objectives, time horizon, risk tolerance, costs and willingness to research—not on whether one format is universally superior.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Equating a high holding count with low risk: inspect top weights, sector exposure, country exposure and correlations.
  • Ignoring overlap: combine the holdings of all your funds and stocks before judging diversification.
  • Buying from the name alone: read the index rules and prospectus to learn what the fund actually considers AI.
  • Using stale data: label every holding and fee with its as-of date and recheck the issuer’s current disclosures.
  • Forgetting ETF pricing: compare market price, NAV and bid-ask spread before submitting an order.
  • Underestimating fees: include the recurring expense ratio and trading spread in your expected outcome.
  • Making a fixed allocation without context: the appropriate mix depends on your complete financial plan, risk tolerance and timeframe.
  • Chasing performance: a recent rally does not prove that an AI label predicts future returns.
  • Treating a thematic fund as a complete portfolio: its narrow mandate may leave you exposed to one sector, industry or region.

Protect yourself from AI-themed investment fraud

Legitimate funds publish an investment objective, holdings, risks and costs; those disclosures are not promises of returns. Be especially skeptical of advertisements or messages promising high or guaranteed returns with little or no risk. The SEC, North American Securities Administrators Association and FINRA warn that AI themes are being used to lure investors into fraud. Their January 25, 2024 investor alert identifies guaranteed high returns and unregistered platforms as warning signs.

Before sending money, verify that the security and intermediary are registered where required, locate an official prospectus and confirm the ticker through a regulated brokerage. Do not rely on a chat message, celebrity endorsement, supposed AI trading bot or pressure to act immediately. A company’s use of AI—and a fund’s use of AI in its name—does not establish that it will outperform or even survive.

Tax, account and jurisdiction checks

The right account and tax treatment depend on your country, account type, holding period and personal circumstances. U.S. investors should read the fund’s tax sections and consult a qualified tax professional for questions about distributions, sales and losses. Investors elsewhere may face different fund domiciles, withholding taxes, reporting requirements, investor protections and product availability. Those differences are material; do not assume that a U.S.-listed ETF can be purchased or taxed in the same way in another jurisdiction.

A practical decision checklist

Use this checklist immediately before investing or adding to a position:

  1. Have I stated the goal, time horizon and risk I am willing to accept?
  2. What AI-related exposure do my existing stocks and funds already provide?
  3. What does this fund’s latest holdings file show, and what percentage sits in its largest positions?
  4. How much will the new position overlap with my current holdings?
  5. What are the index’s eligibility, weighting and rebalancing rules?
  6. What are the expense ratio, bid-ask spread and possible market-price-to-NAV difference?
  7. Which countries, currencies and industries will I add?
  8. Have I read the current summary prospectus and principal-risk disclosures?
  9. Am I making a deliberate long-term decision rather than reacting to a promotion or headline?
  10. What rule will tell me to review or rebalance the position?

The central decision is not which AI company will win. It is how much company-specific and theme-specific risk your complete portfolio can carry while still serving your financial goals. A broad-market core can spread exposure across industries; a carefully examined thematic fund can provide an intentional, limited tilt; and neither should be mistaken for a guarantee.
