How to Invest in a Stock With Limit Orders and Price Alerts

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To buy a stock without paying more than you consider acceptable, submit a buy limit order with your maximum price. To monitor the stock without repeatedly checking it, create a separate price alert for the level that matters to you. The alert only sends a notification; it does not place a trade. You must review the alert, decide whether the investment still fits your plan, and submit or modify an order yourself.

This U.S.-focused guide explains how limit orders work, how to place one, how to set an alert, what order statuses mean, and how to avoid duplicate or unintended trades.

What a limit order does

The SEC defines a limit order as “an order to buy or sell a stock at a specific price or better.” The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance gives that definition in its Understanding Order Types – Investor Bulletin, updated August 18, 2026.

A limit order establishes a price boundary, not a promise that a trade will occur:

  • A buy limit can execute at your limit price or a lower price. It will not execute above the limit.
  • A sell limit can execute at your limit price or a higher price. It will not execute below the limit.
  • If the market never reaches a tradable price at or better than your limit, the order can remain open or expire without a fill.
  • Even when the quoted price touches your limit, available shares, market activity, and the order queue can affect whether your order fills.

The SEC’s Limit Orders glossary entry explains the same price-versus-execution trade-off. A market order instead seeks execution at the best available price, but the final price can differ from the quote you saw when you submitted it.

Order type Primary objective Main trade-off
Market order Prioritize execution at the best available price You do not set a maximum purchase price or minimum sale price
Buy limit order Cap the price you will pay The order may not execute, or may execute only partially
Sell limit order Set the minimum price you will accept The order may not execute, or may execute only partially

Decide your investment and maximum price first

An alert or order setting cannot determine whether a company belongs in your portfolio. Make the investment decision before opening the trade ticket.

Define the reason for buying

Write down why you are considering the stock, what role it would play in your portfolio, and what would make your thesis wrong. A lower price does not automatically make a stock fairly valued. The alert level should prompt a review of your assumptions, not replace that review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a maximum acceptable entry price

For a buy limit, choose the highest price you are genuinely willing to pay for the specified number of shares. Do not use an arbitrary percentage below the current quote simply because it feels like a discount. Consider valuation, volatility, liquidity, your time horizon, and how much of the portfolio the position would represent.

Check the account and security

Confirm that the account has sufficient buying power, that the ticker and security are correct, and that your brokerage supports limit orders for that security and account type. Order availability, restrictions, and handling differ by firm; the SEC’s Brokers guidance recommends understanding a broker’s services and policies before trading.

How to place a buy limit order

  1. Open the security page or trade ticket. Search for the exact stock and verify the company name, ticker, and exchange shown by the broker.
  2. Select Buy. Make sure you are in the intended account and are not editing an existing order.
  3. Choose Limit as the order type. Brokers may display Market, Limit, Stop, or other choices. Select the limit option rather than relying on a default.
  4. Enter the share quantity. Confirm whether the platform accepts whole shares, fractional shares, or both, and review any minimums or restrictions shown on the ticket.
  5. Enter your limit price. This is the maximum price per share for a buy limit. For example, if the stock is quoted above a hypothetical $40 maximum, a buy limit at $40 will not execute unless the market can fill your order at $40 or less. The example does not predict whether or when that will happen.
  6. Choose the duration. Select the available time-in-force option, such as Day or Good-til-canceled, and read the broker’s explanation of how long it remains active.
  7. Review the preview. Check ticker, side (buy), quantity, limit price, duration, estimated cost, and any displayed fees or warnings.
  8. Submit the order once. After submission, record the order number and open the order-status screen. Do not assume that a confirmation screen means the order filled.

The exact labels and screens vary by broker and can change. If the platform does not offer a limit order for the selected security or account, do not substitute a different order type without understanding its price risk.

Choose an order duration you understand

Day orders

A Day order generally remains active only for that trading day. If it has not executed by the broker’s cutoff, it normally expires. “Trading day” and cutoff handling can differ for extended-hours sessions, holidays, and particular securities, so read the firm’s current disclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good-til-canceled orders

A Good-til-canceled (GTC) order can remain open beyond the day it is entered, but the maximum number of days, automatic expiration, and treatment during corporate actions differ by broker. The SEC notes that order types and policies vary by firm in its Investor Bulletin. Confirm the actual expiration date shown on your ticket rather than assuming GTC means indefinite.

Extended-hours considerations

Some firms offer separate extended-hours choices, while others limit order types or eligible securities outside regular sessions. Lower liquidity and wider spreads can make execution less likely or prices less representative. Use only the sessions and order choices you understand, and check the broker’s current rules.

Read order status instead of inferring a fill

A price alert, a quote, or a submission receipt does not establish that shares were purchased. Open the order-status page and interpret the broker’s displayed state.

  • Open or working: The order has been accepted and is waiting for matching shares at your limit or better.
  • Partially filled: Some shares executed; the remainder is still open unless the duration ended or you cancel it.
  • Filled: The broker reports that the requested quantity executed. Check the execution details and average price.
  • Canceled: The broker reports that the remaining quantity is no longer active. Verify that cancellation before submitting a replacement.
  • Expired or rejected: The order is not active. Read the reason, which may relate to duration, account buying power, security eligibility, or an invalid instruction.

The SEC’s Online Investing guidance emphasizes checking whether an order executed and confirming that a cancellation worked. If you place another order before verifying the first one, both can execute and create an unintended duplicate position.

What a stock price alert does

A price alert is a notification rule attached to a security. You specify a condition, such as the price moving above or below a level, and the broker sends a push notification, message-center notice, email, text, or another available channel. The alert does not reserve shares, submit an order, or guarantee that you can trade at the alert price.

Alerts are useful when you have already defined what you want to review. For example, an alert below a valuation threshold can remind you to recheck earnings, news, position size, and the order book. A rising-price alert can prompt a review of an existing holding or a planned sell decision. In either case, the notification is a decision checkpoint, not an automatic execution trigger.

Set a price alert in a brokerage app

Menus differ, but the workflow is usually similar:

  1. Open the stock, ETF, or watchlist entry. Verify the ticker and the security you intend to monitor.
  2. Find Alerts, Notifications, or the bell icon. It may be on the security page, watchlist, portfolio, or app settings.
  3. Choose the trigger. Select above-price or below-price and enter the target. Some platforms also offer percentage-move, news, or event alerts.
  4. Choose delivery channels. Enable push notifications, message-center notices, email, or text where offered. Device-level permission and the broker’s app settings may both be required.
  5. Save and test the configuration. Confirm that the target, direction, frequency, and delivery method appear in the saved-alert list.
  6. Review active alerts periodically. Remove stale alerts after your thesis, position, or target changes so an old notification does not drive a new decision.

Examples of broker alert features

These examples show how features can differ; they are not endorsements or a complete broker comparison.

  • Robinhood: Its U.S. support page describes custom stock and ETF alerts above or below a chosen level, movement alerts, and push notifications. It cautions that push delivery cannot always be guaranteed and depends on service availability and app and phone settings. See Price alerts.
  • Fidelity: Active Trader Pro documentation describes security price alerts, configurable trigger types, and delivery settings. The help page may not reflect the newest interface, so verify labels and behavior in the current platform: Active Trader Pro: Setting a Price Alert.
  • Charles Schwab: Its mobile-app information describes stock alerts for price changes, news, and events, with alerts accessible from multiple areas of the app. See Schwab Mobile App.

Before relying on an alert, confirm whether it covers watchlist securities as well as holdings, whether the trigger is based on the last trade, quote, or another data point, whether it repeats or fires once, and which notification channels are supported.

Use alerts and limit orders as a two-part workflow

  1. Set the investment rule. Decide what evidence would justify buying and the maximum price that fits your plan.
  2. Create the alert. Set a notification at the level that should trigger your review. It can be above or below the current price depending on your strategy.
  3. Wait for the notification without assuming execution. When it arrives, reopen the security page and review current information, spread, trading session, and your position size.
  4. Enter a fresh order deliberately. If the decision still stands, open the trade ticket, choose Buy and Limit, enter quantity and maximum price, select duration, and review the preview.
  5. Verify the result. Check whether the order is open, partially filled, filled, canceled, expired, or rejected. If you cancel it, confirm cancellation before replacing it.

This separation prevents a common error: treating an alert notification as proof that a trade happened or as an instruction to buy automatically.

Why a limit order may not fill

The market never reaches your price

If the stock stays above a buy limit, no purchase occurs. A sell limit can remain open when the stock stays below the minimum sale price.

The price touches your limit but available shares are insufficient

Several orders may be queued at the same price. Another order can execute first, leaving yours partially filled or open.

The quote is not the execution you can obtain

Displayed bid and ask prices can change quickly, and a quote from one session or venue does not guarantee a fill for your order. A brief trade at your limit may not provide enough liquidity for your entire quantity.

The order expired, was canceled, or was rejected

Review the status and broker message. Common causes include the selected duration ending, account buying-power rules, security restrictions, or an instruction the platform could not accept.

A gap moves the stock away

A stock can open above a buy limit or below a sell limit after news or a market closure. Your limit remains a boundary; it does not convert into a market order to chase the new price.

Common mistakes and safer fixes

Mistake Why it causes trouble Safer practice
Assuming an alert places an order You may miss the trade or believe you own shares when you do not Submit a separate order and verify its status
Using a market order when price control matters The execution price can be higher than expected for a buy Consider a limit order if a maximum price is essential
Entering the wrong ticker, side, quantity, or decimal A correct order type can still create the wrong position Read the preview line by line before submission
Replacing an order immediately after canceling The first order may still be active and both can execute Confirm the first order shows canceled before placing another
Leaving an old GTC order unattended It can execute later after your thesis or cash needs change Review open orders and expiration dates regularly
Relying on push notifications alone Delivery can fail because of service, app, phone, or permission issues Check the broker’s alert list and account activity directly
Setting an arbitrary discount target The price may never be reached, or the level may have no investment rationale Base the limit on your valuation and risk plan

How to compare brokerage order and alert tools

If you are evaluating brokers, compare the features that affect execution and monitoring rather than choosing by a single screenshot:

Feature Questions to ask
Limit-order availability Are buy and sell limits available for the stock, account type, fractional shares, and trading session you use?
Duration choices Are Day and GTC offered? What is the actual GTC maximum and expiration process?
Cancellation handling How does the platform show a pending cancellation, and where do you verify that the order is no longer active?
Alert triggers Can you set custom above/below prices, percentage moves, news, or events? Are alerts one-time or recurring?
Coverage Do alerts apply to watchlists, holdings, ETFs, and securities outside the portfolio?
Delivery and reliability controls Which channels are available, and how do app permissions, device settings, or service interruptions affect delivery?
Status clarity Does the interface clearly distinguish open, partially filled, filled, canceled, expired, and rejected orders?

The SEC notes that order types and policies differ by firm. Read the broker’s current disclosures and help pages for your account and region before relying on a particular behavior.

A practical review checklist

Before creating an order

  • Investment reason and time horizon are written down.
  • Maximum buy price or minimum sell price is defined.
  • Correct security, account, quantity, and buying power are confirmed.
  • Trading session and order duration are understood.

Before submitting

  • Order side says Buy or Sell as intended.
  • Order type says Limit.
  • Limit price and quantity are correct.
  • Estimated cost, expiration, and any warnings are reviewed.

After submitting

  • Order number and status are recorded.
  • Partial fills are checked before changing the order.
  • Cancellation is verified before a replacement is submitted.
  • Filled orders are checked in account activity or positions.

Questions that require broker-specific confirmation

Some details cannot be answered safely in a general guide because they vary by firm, security, account, and date:

  • Whether fractional-share limit orders are supported.
  • Whether a limit order can be submitted during premarket or after-hours trading.
  • The maximum lifetime of a GTC order.
  • Which quote or trade data point triggers an alert.
  • Whether an alert repeats, resets, or deactivates after firing.
  • Whether push, email, text, or message-center delivery is available and what happens during an outage.

Open the broker’s current order and notification documentation, then verify the options displayed on your own ticket. A feature described on an older help page may have moved or changed.

Bottom line for using both tools

Use a limit order when controlling the execution price matters more than guaranteeing a fill. Use a price alert to tell you when to reassess the stock, not to automate a purchase. The disciplined sequence is: define the investment and price boundary, create the alert, review the stock when notified, submit a separate limit order only if the decision still holds, and verify every fill or cancellation in the order-status screen.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
