1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou do not have to invest an inheritance in one transaction. First identify exactly what you inherited, reserve money for taxes and near-term needs, address high-interest debt, and then invest the portion intended for long-term goals according to a diversified allocation. You can invest that amount immediately or divide purchases across a written schedule. Phasing is mainly a behavioral tool: it can make market volatility easier to tolerate, but the available evidence does not establish that it produces better returns than investing a lump sum immediately.
This guide is for U.S. readers. Inherited traditional IRAs, workplace plans, real estate and other property have rules that differ from a cash inheritance. Confirm the current tax and beneficiary requirements for your specific assets before selling, distributing or transferring anything.

1. Identify what you inherited before deciding where to invest
An inheritance is not automatically a cash balance. The first decision is to inventory the assets and obligations, not to choose a fund.
Classify each asset
- Cash or bank deposits: Confirm whether the money has already cleared probate or another estate process, whether any tax payment is expected, and who legally owns the account.
- Securities in a taxable account: List each holding, its current value, registration, cost-basis information and any restrictions. Selling everything immediately can create an allocation and tax decision at the same time.
- An inherited traditional IRA: Beneficiary status and the account owner’s date of death affect distribution requirements. A beneficiary generally cannot simply treat the account as their own.
- A workplace retirement plan: Obtain the plan’s beneficiary and distribution paperwork. Employer-plan rules can differ from IRA rules.
- Real estate, a business interest or personal property: Estimate realistic sale or operating costs, insurance, debt attached to the asset and the time needed to convert it to investable cash.
- Other property: Gather valuation and ownership documents before assuming it can be sold or transferred without consequences.
Ask the estate representative, custodian or plan administrator for a complete statement of what you own, what remains payable and which deadlines apply. Keep copies of beneficiary forms, transfer instructions, appraisals and tax documents. Do not move an inherited retirement account until the receiving account is titled correctly; an administrative error can change how a distribution is treated.

2. Separate near-term money from long-term investment money
Only the portion that can stay invested through market declines belongs in a long-term portfolio. Make a written list of expected uses over the next several years, including housing, education, medical costs, family support, a planned business purchase and taxes. Put those amounts in a suitable cash reserve rather than exposing them to a price drop that could force a sale.
Rebuild emergency savings
Investor.gov’s guidance on lump-sum payments specifically includes an inheritance and suggests considering emergency savings before investing. Size the reserve around your household’s essential expenses, job stability and insurance coverage. A larger reserve may be appropriate when income is irregular or a major expense is foreseeable.
Review expensive debt
High-interest credit-card or similar revolving debt can be a priority use of a windfall. Paying it down gives a known reduction in interest cost, unlike a market return that is uncertain. Keep enough cash for bills and emergencies; do not drain every liquid account to eliminate debt.
Reserve for taxes and obligations
Do not assume that an inheritance is entirely tax-free. The tax treatment depends on the asset, its sale, distributions and your jurisdiction. Set aside a conservative amount until a tax professional has reviewed the estate documents and your expected income. State inheritance or estate taxes, property taxes and professional fees are not resolved by the general federal guidance discussed here.
3. Set a target allocation from goals, time horizon and risk capacity
For money reserved for long-term goals, choose an allocation before selecting individual investments. Investor.gov explains that the appropriate mix of asset types depends on your time frame and risk tolerance, and that diversification spreads exposure across investments to reduce concentration risk. Diversification cannot prevent losses when markets fall.
Match risk to the date you need the money
- Near-term goals: Keep the required amount in cash or another lower-volatility vehicle whose access and protections you understand.
- Intermediate goals: Use a mix that limits the chance a single market decline coincides with the spending date. Revisit the plan as the date approaches.
- Long-term goals: You may be able to tolerate more fluctuation, but only if you can continue holding through a decline and do not need to sell to meet a fixed obligation.
Use a written allocation policy
Write the intended percentages or dollar ranges for broad asset categories, the account in which each will be held, and the circumstances that would trigger a rebalance. The policy prevents a rising market from quietly turning a diversified plan into a concentrated one. There is no universally correct stock-and-bond percentage for an inheritance.

Consider the inheritance’s existing concentration
If the estate transferred one company’s shares, a single property or a narrow industry holding, count that exposure when setting your overall allocation. A plan can be diversified only after considering all accounts and assets, not just the new brokerage account.

4. Should you invest an inheritance all at once or over time?
There are two legitimate implementation choices after you have identified the long-term amount and its target allocation.
| Approach | How it works | What it helps with | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immediate investing | Invest the designated amount according to the target allocation as soon as the account and plan are ready. | More of the money is exposed to the portfolio’s potential returns sooner, and the plan is completed in one step. | The full amount experiences market movements immediately; a decline soon after purchase can be emotionally difficult. |
| Scheduled investing | Hold the designated amount in an appropriate cash vehicle and invest predetermined portions on specified dates. | Creates a routine, limits the size of any single purchase and can reduce the temptation to make decisions after headlines or a short-term loss. | Cash held back can lose purchasing power to inflation or miss market gains while it waits. The available sources do not establish a performance advantage over immediate investing. |
Choose the approach you can follow without changing course after the first market decline. Phasing is not a market-timing method unless you start altering dates or amounts based on forecasts. A schedule that is repeatedly postponed is an uninvested allocation, not a completed plan.
5. Build a phased-investment schedule you can execute
A schedule should be specific enough that a future, stressed version of you can follow it without making a new market judgment.
- Set the investable amount. Subtract near-term spending, emergency savings, high-interest debt payments, expected taxes and a margin for unresolved estate obligations from the inheritance.
- Choose the end date. Decide when the entire long-term amount should be invested. A shorter schedule reduces the time cash is idle; a longer schedule may feel more manageable but increases the opportunity cost of waiting.
- Choose equal or purpose-based installments. Equal dollar installments are simple. You can also invest according to your target allocation each time, or direct larger installments to categories that are below target after market movements.
- Write the dates and amounts. Use calendar dates and dollar amounts rather than phrases such as “when the market feels safer.” Include the account, investment category and funding source.
- Automate where available. Set recurring transfers or purchases only after confirming that the account has sufficient settled cash and that the instructions match your target allocation.
- Define exceptions in advance. An emergency expense, a tax bill or a corrected beneficiary instruction can justify pausing. A news story or a one-week market decline is not a new plan.
- Invest the final installment and review. Once the schedule ends, compare the portfolio with the written allocation and rebalance only under the rules you established.
Illustrative schedule
Suppose an inheritance leaves $120,000 for a long-term goal after reserves and obligations are set aside. A six-installment plan could invest $20,000 on each of six predetermined dates, with every installment divided according to the chosen allocation. The example demonstrates the mechanics only; it is not a recommendation for a particular amount, interval or asset mix.
6. Decide where to keep cash while purchases are pending
Uninvested cash still has a product, rate and protection structure. The SEC’s guidance on cash sweep programs says investors should understand the arrangement used for their particular account, including the rate, fees and applicable protections.

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Where is the cash swept? | It may be placed in a bank deposit program, a money-market fund or another arrangement. These are different products. |
| What protection applies? | Do not describe all brokerage cash as FDIC insured. Confirm whether a bank-deposit program has applicable deposit insurance and whether a fund has securities-account protections instead. |
| What rate is paid and how often can it change? | A quoted yield may be variable. Ask whether the rate is promotional, net of expenses or subject to a minimum balance. |
| What fees or limitations apply? | Check account fees, fund expenses, transfer restrictions and the time required for cash to settle before a scheduled purchase. |
| How quickly can you access it? | Match settlement and withdrawal timing to your installment dates and emergency needs. |
Compare the cash option on its actual terms, not merely by its headline rate. Keep documentation of the sweep choice so you know what happens if the brokerage changes programs or rates.
7. Handle an inherited traditional IRA before taking distributions
An inherited traditional IRA is the most important reason not to treat every inheritance as a cash deposit. IRS Publication 590-B (2025) and the IRS beneficiary guidance distinguish between spouses and non-spouse beneficiaries and apply different distribution requirements based on facts such as the beneficiary relationship and the date of death. Rules can also differ for deaths before 2020.
Non-spouse beneficiaries
A non-spouse beneficiary generally cannot elect to treat the inherited traditional IRA as their own and generally cannot roll amounts into or out of it as if it were a personal IRA. A trustee-to-trustee transfer may be possible when the account is established and titled as an inherited IRA for the correct beneficiary. Distributions are generally included in the beneficiary’s taxable income when received.
Surviving spouses
A surviving spouse can have different choices from a non-spouse beneficiary, including options that may allow the account to be treated differently for distribution purposes. Do not assume that a spouse’s option applies to another beneficiary or that a form labeled “rollover” is appropriate without confirming the account type and title.
Before you request money
- Obtain the decedent’s date of death, year-end account value and beneficiary designation.
- Ask the custodian which inherited-account registration is required for each beneficiary.
- Confirm the distribution schedule that applies to this relationship and date of death.
- Estimate how a distribution will affect taxable income in the year received.
- Have a qualified tax professional review the instruction before submitting it, especially when multiple beneficiaries, a trust, a previous distribution or a pre-2020 death is involved.
IRS Publication 559 (2025) explains that taxable distributions from an inherited traditional IRA are generally reported as income to the recipient. The exact amount and timing still depend on the account’s facts and current rules. Keep the distribution confirmation and tax forms with the estate records.
8. Compare fees before choosing an account or adviser
Fees reduce the amount of money left in a portfolio to earn returns. The SEC’s fee guidance recommends looking beyond a single trading commission.

Request a written fee schedule and ask whether a quoted percentage applies to the inherited assets, the entire household relationship or only assets under management. Ask what services are included, whether tax preparation is separate, and how you can leave the relationship.

Self-directed investing may be workable when the inheritance is straightforward cash, your allocation is documented and your tax situation is simple. Professional assistance can be valuable when the estate includes inherited retirement accounts, a trust, a business, real estate, concentrated securities, several beneficiaries or a large one-year tax decision.
Questions for an investment professional
- What credentials and registrations can I verify independently?
- Are you acting as a fiduciary for this engagement, and in what capacity?
- How are you paid, and what other product or account charges will I incur?
- Will you provide a written investment policy and a schedule for deploying the inheritance?
- What tax advice do you provide, and when do you coordinate with my tax professional?
- Who has custody of the assets, and how can I receive statements directly?
Investor.gov’s lump-sum guidance encourages due diligence on investment professionals. Verify the person’s current credentials, disciplinary history, services and fee arrangement before transferring assets or signing discretionary authority. A tax professional and an investment adviser may be separate specialists; one license does not establish expertise in every inherited-asset issue.
10. Practical plans for common inheritance situations
Cash inheritance with no urgent spending
Keep the amount needed for emergency savings, debt and known taxes in an accessible account. Set a target allocation for the remainder, then choose immediate investing or a dated installment plan. Check the sweep terms for any cash waiting to be invested.
Inherited taxable securities
Do not let the inherited holdings dictate your permanent portfolio. Document the positions and basis information, determine whether selling creates a taxable gain or loss under your circumstances, and compare the concentration with your target allocation. A staged sale and staged reinvestment can be coordinated, but tax consequences should be estimated before each major transaction.

Inheritance tied up in real estate
Estimate carrying costs, debt, maintenance, insurance and a realistic sale timeline. Until the property is sold or otherwise monetized, it is part of your total asset allocation and concentration risk. Do not promise yourself that a future sale will fund a scheduled installment until the transaction is complete.
11. Common mistakes and how to recover
Investing before understanding the asset
Problem: A beneficiary sells or transfers an account without confirming its tax status. Recovery: Stop further transactions, retain every confirmation and contact the custodian and a qualified tax professional promptly.
Putting near-term money into volatile investments
Problem: A market decline arrives before a tuition payment, home purchase or tax bill. Recovery: Rebuild the cash reserve and revise the allocation so dated obligations are not dependent on market prices.

Problem: Each installment is postponed until the market appears safer. Recovery: Write new dates based on your financial capacity, not a forecast, and automate the remaining purchases.
Ignoring fees because the inheritance is large
Problem: Small-looking percentages and recurring charges continue on a larger balance. Recovery: Request the full annual dollar cost, compare alternatives with the same service scope and move only after checking transfer and tax implications.
Assuming diversification means no loss
Problem: A diversified portfolio is sold in panic because the investor expected stability. Recovery: Reassess whether the allocation matches the actual time horizon and ability to tolerate loss; change it deliberately rather than reacting to a single headline.
12. A final implementation checklist
- Inventory every inherited asset, account owner and obligation.
- Confirm whether any inherited retirement account is an IRA, workplace plan or another arrangement.
- Set aside emergency savings, high-interest debt payments, foreseeable spending and a tax reserve.
- Record beneficiary status, the account owner’s date of death and all custodian deadlines.
- Write a diversified target allocation based on goals, time horizon and risk tolerance.
- Choose immediate investing or a dated schedule and document the reason.
- Check the cash-sweep location, rate, fees, access and applicable protection.
- Compare transaction, advisory, fund and account costs.
- Verify any professional’s credentials, fiduciary role, compensation and service scope.
- Keep statements, transfer forms, tax documents and the investment policy together.
The right result is not the fastest possible purchase. It is a plan that protects money needed soon, respects the special rules attached to inherited assets and puts long-term money into a diversified allocation on a schedule you can maintain through ordinary market uncertainty.
