Stop every other connection, run a clean test beside the router (and over Ethernet if possible), then check your allowance, congestion status, obstructions, weather and equipment. Improve the home Wi‑Fi segment first; reduce video quality and background transfers to preserve priority data; and compare the cost of an add-on with waiting for your billing reset when high-speed data is exhausted.
Why satellite internet slows down
A slow connection can originate in several different places. The satellite link may be congested or affected by weather, but your own Wi‑Fi, a crowded household network, an old router, malware, an obstructed dish view or an exhausted high-speed allowance can produce similar symptoms. Treating every slowdown as a reason to buy a faster plan or router wastes money.

- Local Wi‑Fi: Distance from the router, walls and interference can make one room slow while another works normally.
- Device contention: Every connected device shares the service speed. A television stream, game download, cloud backup and video call running together can make each feel slow.
- Provider congestion or policy: Plans can have “up to” speeds and may deprioritize traffic after a high-speed or priority allowance is used.
- Weather and obstructions: Trees, buildings, heavy weather and installation problems can interrupt the signal path.
- Device or software problems: Outdated hardware, malware, background synchronization and an overloaded client can reduce measured speed.
- Latency: The long satellite path adds delay even when throughput is acceptable. It is most noticeable in fast multiplayer games and some VPN connections.
These causes require different fixes. A new router can improve coverage inside your home, but it cannot remove satellite congestion, clear an obstructed view or restore an allowance that has already been consumed.
Run a clean speed diagnosis before changing equipment
Use a repeatable test so you know whether you are fixing the satellite service or only the Wi‑Fi in one room. Viasat specifically advises stopping all other usage for an accurate test. Record the result rather than relying on how a single web page feels.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Stop household traffic. Pause streaming, game downloads, cloud backups, camera uploads, operating-system updates and large file transfers. Disconnect or pause devices that can resume automatically.
- Record conditions. Note download speed, upload speed, latency, the date and time, weather, and whether the test used Wi‑Fi or Ethernet. Peak-hour results and storm results should not be treated as your normal baseline.
- Test beside the gateway. Stand close to the router and repeat the test. If the gateway has an Ethernet port and your computer supports it, run a wired test as well. Wired and near-router results help separate the satellite service from wireless coverage.
- Test the problem room. Run the same test at the location where you normally experience slow service. A large gap between the near-router and distant-room results points to Wi‑Fi coverage or interference.
- Check the provider portal or app. Look for remaining high-speed or priority data, a deprioritization notice, outages, device-usage details and any scheduled maintenance.
- Inspect the signal path. Check for new tree growth, snow or other obstructions and review the provider’s alerts. HughesNet identifies trees and weather disturbances as causes of interruption; Starlink’s troubleshooting guidance includes obstructions, weather, alerts and cable checks.
- Restart safely. Reboot the modem or gateway and the test device. Keep the modem ventilated, reseat visible cables and confirm that Wi‑Fi is enabled with the expected network name and band.
- Repeat at another time. If near-router tests are consistently good off-peak but poor during busy hours, congestion is more likely than a defective router.
Viasat lists multiple users, router placement, peak congestion, malware and outdated devices among factors that can change a speed-test result. A clean log gives you evidence before you spend on hardware or data.
Fix the home Wi‑Fi segment without using more satellite data
Place the router centrally
Put the router as close as practical to the center of the living area, elevated and in the open. Keep it away from thick walls, large appliances, metal cabinets and enclosed shelves. Central placement reduces the distance and obstacles between the router and household devices. It improves local delivery; it does not increase the satellite plan’s maximum speed.
Use the two Wi‑Fi bands deliberately
If your equipment supports separate network names, split the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Starlink recommends assigning high-bandwidth devices to 5 GHz. Put a 4K television, console or nearby computer on 5 GHz when signal strength is adequate; use 2.4 GHz for devices farther away or for low-bandwidth smart-home equipment. Separating bands can reduce crowding and makes it easier to identify which devices are consuming wireless capacity.

HughesNet states that all connected devices share the service speed. Pause a large download before starting a video call, stop a second television stream while uploading a backup, and schedule game updates rather than allowing several to run at once. This changes the amount of contention without consuming any additional data.
Consider an older router only when coverage is the bottleneck
HughesNet says a router older than three years may merit replacement. Use that as a troubleshooting threshold, not a guarantee of faster satellite service. Replace or upgrade when your near-gateway test is good but distant rooms remain weak, the router cannot separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, or it drops connections under normal household load. A new router cannot correct provider congestion, an exhausted allowance, bad weather or a blocked satellite view.
Check cables, ventilation and device health
Loose or damaged cables can cause intermittent service. Keep the gateway’s vents clear and restart it if the provider’s troubleshooting process calls for a reboot. On a computer or phone, install pending system updates, close unnecessary applications and run a reputable malware check if unexplained slowness persists. Malware is one of the factors Viasat says can affect a speed test.

Interpret VPN results separately
Encryption and the extra routing path can reduce throughput. HughesNet states: “VPN usage will reduce the speed of your internet service by up to 70%.” That is a provider statement, not a prediction for every VPN, server or plan. Compare a clean test with the VPN off and on, and use a nearby VPN endpoint when your security policy permits. A router upgrade will not remove the VPN’s processing or routing overhead.
Reduce data usage where it matters most
Video is normally the largest controllable household transfer. Viasat publishes these estimates for streaming:
| Video quality | Published usage estimate | Approximate implication |
|---|---|---|
| 480p standard definition | About 0.7 GB per hour | About 7 GB for 10 hours |
| 1080p high definition | About 2.7 GB per hour | About 27 GB for 10 hours |
| 4K | Up to 9 GB per hour | Up to 90 GB for 10 hours |
These are Viasat’s published estimates; actual consumption varies by service, codec, frame rate and device. The page was current in 2026 and did not state a publication year. Use the figures to choose a conservative household setting, then verify actual usage in your provider portal.
Set a lower streaming resolution
Choose standard definition or the service’s data-saver mode for routine viewing. Reserve 1080p or 4K for content where the difference is worth the data. A large television does not require every program to stream at its maximum available resolution, especially when viewers sit farther away.
Turn off autoplay
Disable automatic playback of the next episode, previews and social-video feeds. Autoplay can consume data while nobody is actively watching. Check every television, phone, tablet and browser profile because a setting changed on one device does not necessarily apply to the others.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Turn off or disconnect Roku, Chromecast, Fire Stick, smart TVs and similar equipment when it is not being used. Standby devices can refresh applications, load previews or resume a stream. If a device has a sleep or bandwidth setting, use it rather than leaving a video app open indefinitely.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Control background refresh and synchronization
Disable background refresh for nonessential mobile apps and pause automatic photo, file and camera uploads when priority data is tight. Configure computers so cloud drives synchronize only selected folders or run on a schedule. Check phones, tablets and laptops separately; one forgotten device can consume an allowance overnight.
Use offline downloads strategically
Download music, shows, podcasts and large documents when a provider’s bonus or free window applies, or when the network is otherwise idle. Offline playback prevents repeated streaming of the same material. Keep downloads on local storage and delete them when they are no longer needed so a device does not repeatedly re-download content.
Schedule large transfers in provider bonus windows
HughesNet identifies a local-time Bonus Zone from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Viasat describes Free Zones on some plans. The exact hours, eligibility and treatment of traffic depend on the plan and location, so confirm the current terms in your account before scheduling a transfer.
- Schedule operating-system and application updates for the qualifying window.
- Queue game downloads and console updates instead of starting them during evening viewing.
- Run computer backups and large cloud exports overnight when the plan permits it.
- Start the transfer early enough to finish before the window closes; otherwise the remainder may count against priority data.
- Check the provider’s usage report afterward to confirm how the transfer was classified.
A bonus window may protect your allowance, but it does not guarantee a particular speed. Keep devices ventilated and configured to wake only when needed, and avoid leaving an unmonitored transfer running if it could continue into chargeable hours.
Manage security cameras and upload-heavy devices
Uploads are often overlooked because households focus on download speed. Continuous security-camera recording can consume substantial upload data. HughesNet recommends limiting recording or using motion-triggered recording and warns that continuous home-security uploads are a poor fit for its service.
- Use motion-triggered clips instead of continuous recording where security requirements allow.
- Lower camera resolution or frame rate only after confirming that the resulting footage still meets your safety needs.
- Set retention periods so old footage is deleted rather than repeatedly transferred.
- Schedule cloud exports during an applicable bonus or free window.
- Review each camera’s upload total in the provider portal or its own application.
Do not disable recording solely to save data if it would undermine insurance, legal or personal safety requirements. Instead, target resolution, retention and upload timing.

Understand priority data, deprioritization and add-ons
Satellite plans commonly distinguish an allowance of high-speed or priority data from service after that allowance is used. HughesNet says exceeding plan data can slow service during high-traffic periods. Viasat describes slower standard data after high-speed data is consumed. The connection may remain online, but performance can fall when the network is busy.

When speeds drop suddenly across every device, open the provider app or portal first. Confirm the remaining allowance, whether a token or add-on is active, the billing-reset date, any deprioritization message and which device categories used the most data. A sudden policy-related slowdown will not be fixed by moving a router.
Compare an add-on with waiting for reset
Some providers offer priority-restoring options, such as Viasat Data Boost or HughesNet Tokens. Availability, price, amount of data and geographic eligibility change, so verify the current offer in your account. Compare the add-on’s cost with the value of faster service for the remaining days in the billing cycle. If your household can use offline content, lower video quality and schedule transfers, waiting may be the cheaper choice.
| Situation | First financial choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Allowance nearly exhausted, little urgent work | Reduce video and wait for reset | Avoids an add-on when slower service is tolerable. |
| Allowance exhausted, work or school deadline | Check the current priority-data add-on | Pay only when the time saved is worth the verified price. |
| Allowance disappears unexpectedly | Review device usage before buying data | Find cameras, backups or autoplay that may repeat the problem. |
| Slow only in one room | Fix Wi‑Fi coverage | An add-on would not repair a local wireless dead spot. |
Latency is different from speed
Latency is the time data takes to travel between you and a service. Viasat explains that the distance to a satellite produces higher latency than cable or DSL and that the difference is most noticeable in certain fast-paced games and VPN use. A speed test can show a respectable download rate while an interactive application still feels delayed.
- Expect less responsive controls in fast multiplayer games than on low-latency terrestrial connections.
- Use game modes and applications that tolerate delay; no router setting can remove the satellite path.
- For VPN work, test the service with the VPN off and on and select a geographically sensible endpoint.
- Do not mistake a faster local Wi‑Fi link for lower satellite latency.
Latency and throughput should be tracked separately in your diagnostic notes. A plan advertised at an “up to” speed is not a guarantee: Viasat states, “Speeds are ‘up to’, not guaranteed and will vary.” Weather, congestion, equipment and policy can all change the result.

When weather or obstructions are the real cause
Satellite communication needs a clear path between the installation and the satellite. HughesNet identifies trees and weather disturbances as causes of interruption. Starlink directs customers to check obstructions, weather, alerts and cables. Inspect the installation after storms and as vegetation grows; a previously clear view can become blocked months later.

- WiFi 6E Unleashed – The 6 GHz band brings more bandwidth, faster speeds, and near-zero latency; Enables more responsive gaming and video chatting
- Connect More Devices—True Tri-Band and OFDMA technology increase capacity by 4 times to enable simultaneous transmission to more devices
- Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
- EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.
- Look for new branches, accumulated snow, ice or objects in the dish’s view.
- Check the provider app for obstruction, weather or outage alerts before changing settings.
- Inspect outdoor and indoor cable connections for looseness or visible damage.
- Do not relocate or remount outdoor equipment unless you can do so safely and within provider requirements.
- Compare performance in clear weather and during the event. A repeatable weather-only pattern points away from household Wi‑Fi.
Short weather-related interruptions cannot be tuned away with video settings. Data-saving steps still preserve your allowance, but they do not clear rain, snow or a blocked line of sight.
A practical weekly maintenance routine
- Review usage: Check the provider portal for total consumption and the highest-using devices.
- Inspect background transfers: Look for camera uploads, cloud synchronization, game updates and autoplay.
- Check the allowance: Note priority data remaining and the next billing reset.
- Run a controlled test when needed: Stop traffic and test near the router, then in the problem room.
- Check the installation: Look for obstruction, weather or cable alerts.
- Schedule large work: Move backups and downloads into the plan’s verified bonus or free window.
- Reassess equipment: Replace an aging router only if local coverage, band separation or connection stability remains the demonstrated bottleneck.
Keep a simple log of date, time, weather, test method, speed, latency and allowance status. It helps distinguish a recurring peak-hour policy effect from a failing device and gives provider support concrete information.
How to evaluate a different satellite plan
If your household repeatedly reaches its allowance or needs interactive applications, compare plans using the same criteria rather than headline download speed:
Recommended Free Tools
- Priority allowance: How much high-speed data is included, and what happens after it is consumed?
- Congestion policy: How does peak-time traffic affect customers who have used their allowance?
- Latency: Is the service suitable for your games, calls, remote work and VPN requirements?
- Installation conditions: Does your address have a clear, weather-resilient line of sight?
- Upload performance: Can it support cameras, backups and other outbound traffic?
- Address availability: Is the advertised plan actually offered at your installation address?
- Add-on economics: What does extra priority data cost compared with waiting for a reset?
Exact terms are address- and date-specific. Save the plan’s allowance, post-allowance policy and add-on conditions at signup so you can compare the offer with future changes.
What to do when each symptom appears
Every device is slow, including beside the router
Stop all traffic and retest. Check allowance status, outage notices, weather and obstructions, then reboot the gateway. If the clean near-router result remains poor, contact the provider with your logged times and conditions rather than buying a Wi‑Fi extender.
Only one room is slow
Compare near-router and distant-room tests. Move the router centrally, separate the bands, place high-bandwidth devices on 5 GHz when practical and consider a newer router if it is more than about three years old. These changes address local coverage, not satellite capacity.
Speed collapses after a predictable amount of use
Review the priority allowance and post-allowance policy. Identify the highest-using devices, lower video quality, disable autoplay, pause background sync and compare a verified add-on with waiting for reset.
Service fails during storms or after tree growth
Check weather and obstruction alerts, inspect the line of sight and cables, and document the timing. Data-saving settings will not repair a blocked or weather-disrupted path.
Web browsing is acceptable but games or VPN work poorly
Measure latency and compare VPN-on and VPN-off tests. Satellite path delay is inherent, and HughesNet says VPN use can reduce speed by up to 70%. Choose applications and schedules that tolerate the delay rather than expecting a router to eliminate it.
