How to Identify Unusual Trading Volume in Indian Stocks Before You Buy

Do not buy an Indian stock simply because its volume is unusually high. First compare the activity with that stock’s own recent baseline, study how price responded, verify a disclosed catalyst, check delivery and liquidity, review NSE surveillance information, and complete SEBI’s broader due-diligence checklist. A volume spike is a screening signal; it is not proof of genuine accumulation or a prediction of returns.

What “unusual volume” means

Trading volume is the number of shares exchanged during a period. “Unusual” means activity that is materially different from the stock’s normal pattern, not a fixed number that applies to every company. A large-cap share that trades millions of shares daily needs a different benchmark from a thinly traded small-cap share. The useful question is therefore: How exceptional is today’s volume relative to this stock’s own recent history?

SEBI’s investor guidance tells investors to review the latest price and volume, historical data, corporate announcements, financial health and valuation before investing. NSE provides price, volume, deliverable-position, bhavcopy and surveillance-indicator reports that can support that review. Neither source establishes a universal retail rule such as “two times average volume equals a buy.” Volume variation is one input into market surveillance, not an official entry threshold.

A spike can reflect informed buying, a legitimate news reaction, portfolio rebalancing, a large negotiated trade, intraday speculation, forced selling or coordinated activity. The number becomes useful only when you identify which explanation fits the rest of the evidence.

Start with a stock-specific baseline

Choose a comparable lookback

Use a clearly stated recent period, such as the previous several weeks of normal trading sessions, and compare the current session with that history. Exclude days that were obviously abnormal for a known reason when calculating a “typical” level, but keep those days visible for context. A corporate-action adjustment, a long trading halt or an exchange-wide disruption can make a simple average misleading.

Record the baseline method in your notes. A mean is easy to understand but can be pulled upward by one huge day. A median better represents a normal session when the stock has occasional bursts. Whichever method you use, apply it consistently and compare like with like: regular-session volume with regular-session volume, and the same share class and exchange data series.

Separate absolute size from relative change

A percentage increase can look dramatic in a very illiquid security even when only a modest number of shares changed hands. Conversely, a heavily traded company may absorb a large absolute increase without the same price impact. Note both the current share count and its ratio to the baseline. Also consider whether the reported activity is concentrated in a short part of the session, because a late rush can produce a high daily total without representing broad participation.

Do not turn a multiple into a rule

There is no regulator-approved volume multiple that forecasts a profitable trade. NSE surveillance material considers volume variation alongside other variables, including high-low variation, client concentration, close-to-close variation, market capitalization, delivery percentage, unique PANs and P/E. Those factors are designed to identify securities that deserve scrutiny, not to tell an individual investor when to buy.

Read price and volume together

Volume has no direction by itself. Price behavior supplies the first interpretation, but even a matching price-volume pattern is not conclusive.

Price response during the high-volume session Possible interpretation What to verify next
Price rises and closes near the session high Demand may be strong, especially if the move follows a credible disclosure. Check the announcement, delivery information, follow-through in later sessions and valuation.
Price rises early, then closes well below the high Early buying may have met heavy selling; the move may be distribution or a failed breakout. Review intraday reversal, closing volume, subsequent sessions and shareholder or promoter disclosures where available.
Price falls on expanded volume Could indicate distribution, forced liquidation, bad news or a broad market sell-off. Look for company filings, sector news, margin-related pressure and whether the whole market declined.
Price moves little despite very high turnover Buying and selling pressure may be balanced, or shares may have changed hands repeatedly intraday. Compare deliverable position with traded volume and examine liquidity and concentration.
Price spikes and quickly reverses Momentum may have failed, or the move may have been driven by a rumour or thin order book. Search official exchange disclosures and treat an unexplained reversal as a reason to wait.
Volume expands while price remains inside a narrow range Position building, absorption or churn is possible; direction is not established. Wait for a confirmed move and check whether participation is broad or concentrated.

A high-volume advance is not automatically “buying,” and a high-volume decline is not automatically a bargain. The close, the intraday path and the next sessions matter more than the headline volume number.

Verify what caused the activity

Start with official company and exchange disclosures

Look for earnings, guidance, fundraising, acquisitions, demergers, dividends, buybacks, credit events, management changes, regulatory orders and other corporate actions. Read the filing itself rather than relying on a headline. Check the time of the announcement against the time of the price and volume move. A disclosure published after the market moved cannot automatically explain an earlier spike.

NSE notes that rumours or media reports can have a significant impact on a security’s price and volume. When a security shows a spurt without a major corporate announcement, the exchange may seek clarification. That makes a social-media claim an unverified lead, not a catalyst. If you cannot match the story to an official filing or a credible, attributable report, mark the explanation as unconfirmed.

Classify catalyst quality

  • High quality: a dated company or exchange filing that clearly describes a financially material event.
  • Medium quality: a credible news report that cites named documents or participants but is not yet confirmed by the company.
  • Low quality: anonymous messages, screenshots, chat-room posts or claims that contain no document, date or attributable source.

The classification is not a prediction. It tells you how much independent verification is needed before you risk capital.

Check whether the news is already priced in

Compare the timing and size of the move with the information’s economic significance. A small announcement can generate a large reaction in an illiquid stock, while a major result may produce little movement if investors anticipated it. Read the actual numbers, obligations and risks in the disclosure; do not infer a company’s prospects from the volume bar alone.

Use delivery and liquidity data to distinguish turnover from ownership change

Traded volume counts shares exchanged, including shares that may be bought and sold repeatedly within the session. Deliverable-position or delivery-percentage data helps show how much activity resulted in shares being carried beyond the day, where the exchange publishes that information. It is not a guarantee of long-term conviction, but it adds context.

Compare delivery information with the stock’s normal range rather than judging one day in isolation. A high delivery percentage with a credible catalyst can indicate that more participants accepted overnight exposure; a low percentage alongside enormous turnover can be consistent with intraday churn. Neither pattern proves who is right about the company.

Liquidity changes the meaning of every percentage. In a thinly traded stock, a few orders can move the price sharply, spreads can widen, and an apparently large volume multiple may represent a small absolute market. Check typical traded value, bid-ask depth when available, price-band constraints and whether a small order would materially move your entry or exit price.

  • Ask whether you could exit a position without relying on a single buyer.
  • Use a limit order when market depth is poor; a market order can fill at an unexpectedly wide price.
  • Reduce position size when the stock’s normal traded value is small relative to your planned investment.
  • Watch for concentration indicators or repeated activity by a narrow group of accounts.

Check NSE surveillance and trading controls

Before acting on an unusual move, review the relevant NSE surveillance pages and reports. Depending on the security, you may see information about the Additional Surveillance Measure (ASM), Enhanced Surveillance Measure (ESM), price bands, trade-for-trade settlement, periodic call auctions or other controls.

These measures are protective or pre-emptive tools, not a finding that a company is fraudulent. They can nevertheless change execution, settlement, margin and liquidity conditions. Their presence is a reason to slow down, read the applicable notice and investigate the underlying business rather than treating the label as either a buy signal or a condemnation.

Why surveillance can matter to your decision

NSE’s surveillance framework considers combinations of high-low variation, close-to-close variation, volume variation, delivery percentage, client concentration, unique PANs, market capitalization and P/E. A stock may attract attention because several indicators align, not because one volume number crossed a universal threshold. NSE guidance for trading members also calls for systems that detect abnormal behavior with respect to the price or volumes of securities and investigate alerts.

Review at least these items:

  • Whether the security is listed in an ASM or ESM stage and the date of the notice.
  • Whether a price band, trade-for-trade requirement or periodic call auction applies.
  • Any exchange clarification request or company response concerning unusual activity.
  • Whether settlement, margin or trading conditions differ from ordinary sessions.

Do not assume that removal from surveillance validates the company, or that inclusion proves wrongdoing. The practical implication is that your evidence burden should be higher and your position size more conservative.

Return to the business and valuation

Volume analysis is a filter; it does not replace fundamental due diligence. SEBI’s investor checklist calls for understanding the business, comparing competitors, assessing economic conditions, reviewing at least two years of financial statements and considering P/E and intrinsic value along with price and volume.

Business and sector questions

  • What does the company sell, and which customers, geographies and suppliers drive revenue?
  • Is the reported catalyst likely to change earnings, cash flow, debt or competitive position?
  • Are sector conditions improving for the whole industry or only for this company?
  • Does the company have a history of meeting guidance and communicating material risks?

Financial-statement questions

  • Are revenue and profit growth supported by operating cash flow?
  • How have debt, interest costs, working capital and share count changed?
  • Do receivables, inventories or contingent liabilities require explanation?
  • Are the latest statements audited, and are there qualifications or material notes?

Valuation questions

Compare the stock’s valuation with its own history and relevant competitors, while recognizing that ratios differ by sector. A volume spike can occur when a richly valued stock becomes even more expensive or when a distressed stock is repriced. Neither situation is automatically attractive. Record the assumptions behind your valuation and the evidence that would invalidate them.

A repeatable seven-step workflow

  1. Define the baseline. On the NSE reports portal, retrieve historical price and volume data for the stock. Choose and document a recent average or median, and note any unusual sessions that could distort it.
  2. Describe the price response. Record the open, high, low, close and the intraday path. State whether the move advanced, declined, stalled or reversed; do not label it bullish merely because volume was high.
  3. Locate the catalyst. Search company announcements and exchange disclosures around the time of the move. Separate a confirmed filing from a media report, rumour or message that cannot be verified.
  4. Inspect delivery and liquidity. Compare deliverable-position or delivery-percentage data with the stock’s normal range. Check traded value, spreads, depth, price bands and whether concentration could amplify the move.
  5. Review surveillance status. Check ASM, ESM, price-band, trade-for-trade, periodic call-auction and related NSE notices. Read the notice’s operational consequences before placing an order.
  6. Complete fundamental checks. Apply SEBI’s guidance: understand the business, compare competitors, assess the economy and sector, review at least two years of financial statements and consider valuation.
  7. Write a decision rule before buying. Record the catalyst, baseline comparison, entry conditions, invalidation point, maximum position size and evidence that would make you stand aside. If the explanation remains unclear, wait or pass.

How to compare two unusual-volume situations

When two stocks both show a dramatic increase, score them on the same axes instead of choosing the one with the larger headline multiple.

Axis Questions to answer Why it changes the decision
Baseline-relative volume How unusual is the session compared with this stock’s own recent history, using a stated average or median? Prevents a normal high-volume stock from looking exceptional and a thin stock from looking safer than it is.
Price response Did price advance, decline, stall or reverse, and where did it close relative to the range? Shows whether buyers controlled the session or whether selling absorbed the move.
Catalyst quality Is there a verifiable company filing, a credible report or only an unconfirmed claim? Determines how much independent verification is required.
Delivery and liquidity Did deliverable activity change, and can you enter and exit without moving the market? Distinguishes possible ownership transfer from intraday churn and highlights execution risk.
Surveillance context Does an NSE measure, price band or settlement restriction apply? Signals that trading conditions and the evidence burden may differ from normal.
Fundamental confirmation Do financial statements, business performance, sector conditions and valuation support the move? Reduces the risk of treating attention as business improvement.

Warning signs that deserve extra investigation

None of these signs proves manipulation or guarantees a loss. Each means that the simple “volume is high, therefore buy” story is inadequate.

  • A very large increase in a security that is normally illiquid or thinly traded.
  • A sharp price move with no identifiable company announcement or credible explanation.
  • A spike followed by a rapid reversal or a close far from the session high.
  • Heavy activity combined with concentration indicators or an NSE surveillance measure.
  • A social-media or messaging-app claim that cannot be matched to an official exchange filing.
  • A volume surge that conflicts with the company’s financial condition, cash generation or valuation.
  • Repeated limit-up or limit-down sessions that make ordinary exit assumptions unrealistic.
  • A move that appears large in percentage terms but is small in absolute traded value.

Illustrative cases

Case 1: Confirmed results, orderly advance

A company publishes results before the session, the filing explains a material change in earnings, volume is well above its documented baseline, price rises through the day and closes near the high. Delivery data is not unusually weak, liquidity is adequate and no restrictive surveillance notice applies. This is a stronger candidate for further analysis than an unexplained spike, but you still need to test valuation, cash flow and whether the market had already anticipated the result.

Case 2: Rumour-driven spike and reversal

A message claims that a company will receive a major order. The stock jumps on heavy turnover, no matching exchange filing appears, and it closes well below its high. The combination of an unverified catalyst and reversal is a reason to stand aside until the claim is confirmed or rejected. Buying because the stock “was once higher today” would turn uncertainty into an entry signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Case 3: Thin stock under surveillance

A lightly traded stock records a large percentage increase in volume and price, but the absolute traded value remains small. NSE lists a surveillance measure and the stock has a narrow price band. Even if the chart looks strong, execution and exit risk are substantial. The prudent response is to understand the notice, verify the business and consider passing rather than assuming the surveillance label predicts direction.

Case 4: High turnover, little price change

A liquid stock trades heavily while ending close to its prior close. Delivery information is near its normal range and no major disclosure is found. The activity may reflect short-term churn, hedging or a large transfer between participants. Without a directional price response or credible catalyst, volume alone supplies little basis for a purchase.

Build a written pre-trade checklist

Use a one-page record so an exciting chart does not replace analysis:

  • Baseline: lookback period, average or median method, current volume and absolute traded value.
  • Price: open, high, low, close, range position and whether the move held or reversed.
  • Catalyst: filing title and date, or an explicit note that no credible catalyst was found.
  • Delivery: current deliverable position or percentage compared with its normal range.
  • Liquidity: typical turnover, spread, depth, price band and expected exit conditions.
  • Surveillance: ASM, ESM, trade-for-trade, call-auction or other applicable notice.
  • Fundamentals: business, sector, two years of statements, cash flow, debt and valuation.
  • Risk plan: maximum rupee exposure, invalidation condition, holding period and evidence that would trigger an exit or no-trade decision.

Set the invalidation condition before placing the order. Examples include failure of the disclosed catalyst to materialize, a close back below a defined technical level, deterioration in the company’s financial evidence or inability to exit at a reasonable price. The condition should be specific enough that you cannot quietly move it after the trade goes against you.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using a universal threshold

Mistake: treating any fixed multiple of average volume as a regulator-backed buy signal.

Correction: state your own baseline method and combine volume with price, catalyst, delivery, liquidity, surveillance and fundamentals. NSE’s surveillance inputs are not retail entry rules.

Confusing turnover with accumulation

Mistake: assuming every share traded represents a new long-term owner.

Correction: inspect deliverable-position data where available and consider whether repeated intraday trades explain the turnover.

Ignoring the close

Mistake: reacting to the session high while overlooking a sharp reversal.

Correction: record the closing location within the day’s range and examine the next sessions before concluding that demand persisted.

Accepting rumours as catalysts

Mistake: treating a message, screenshot or anonymous post as confirmation.

Correction: match the claim to an official filing or a credible, attributable report. NSE recognizes that rumours can significantly affect price and volume and may seek clarification when a spurt lacks a major announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overlooking execution risk

Mistake: sizing a thin stock as if it traded like a liquid large company.

Correction: relate position size to normal traded value, use limit orders when appropriate and assume that a price-band or surveillance restriction can make an exit difficult.

Where to get the underlying information

Use SEBI’s investor guidance for the pre-investment checklist: latest price and volume, historical data, corporate announcements, financial health, competitor comparisons, financial statements and valuation.

Use NSE’s reports portal for price, volume, deliverable-position and bhavcopy data, together with surveillance indicators. Check NSE’s market-surveillance overview, ASM information, trading-member surveillance guidance and rumour-verification material to understand why a move may receive additional scrutiny and what a trading restriction means.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save the dated documents you relied on. Exchange pages and company disclosures can be updated, and a later explanation should not be confused with information that was available before your proposed trade.

When the correct decision is to wait

Waiting is rational when the catalyst cannot be verified, the price has already reversed, liquidity is too poor for your position size, surveillance conditions are unclear, delivery data does not support your interpretation, or the company’s financial evidence conflicts with the market excitement. Missing one trade costs less than entering a position whose risks you cannot describe.

The disciplined answer to “Should I buy because volume is unusually high?” is therefore “not yet.” Use the spike to start an investigation, not to end one. A purchase becomes defensible only after the activity has a credible explanation, the trading conditions are understood, the business and valuation have been checked, and your risk rule says the potential reward justifies the possibility of being wrong.
