How to Help Your Business Recover After Road Construction Disrupts Customer Traffic

Start by confirming exactly how customers can reach you, then make those directions easy to find and keep them current as construction changes. Coordinate with the road project team about entrances, parking, signs, and work phases; use your own sales and customer records to decide what else to adjust. There is no established universal revenue-loss estimate or recovery timeline for businesses affected by road construction.

First, confirm how customers can reach you

Do not assume a road-closure sign means your business is inaccessible. Verify the approved route and the conditions at the site before publishing directions. Walk or drive the approaches customers typically use and check:

  • Which turns and roads remain open, and which entrance customers should use.
  • Whether parking is available and how customers reach it.
  • Whether a safe pedestrian route remains open.
  • How delivery drivers should reach the business.
  • What will change in the current and next construction phases.

Ask the project contact for the current phase plan and the next planned access change. FHWA identifies maintaining access for businesses and residents as an objective of work-zone traffic management: FHWA Work Zone Traffic Management.

Coordinate with the road project team

Contact the project owner or information office early, while there is still time to discuss access and mitigation. Be specific: explain which approach customers miss, what barrier or sign obscures the entrance, which customer hours matter, and whether a temporary entrance or directions to an alternate entrance could help. FHWA guidance says early involvement by affected businesses can help identify impacts and develop mitigation.

Possible measures include signs or information directing motorists to a business and, when required, relocating access points. FHWA’s Module 5 training workbook notes: “Access may require a temporary entrance, or signage clearly marking an obscured entrance.” The project owner controls public-road traffic devices, so coordinate requests rather than installing or changing official traffic-control signs yourself. Ask about customer peak periods and keep in touch as the work advances; access arrangements may change with construction phases. See FHWA business-access guidance and its Module 5 training workbook.

Make accurate access information easy to find

Use consistent, verified directions wherever customers look for you: your storefront, website, business profile, social accounts, booking page, and direct customer messages. State whether you are open, which entrance to use, where parking is available, and how to contact you with questions. Recheck time-sensitive directions and note when they were last verified; update them promptly if a route or work phase changes.

  • Product Material: crafted from 20 mil thick, heavy-duty, rust-proof reflective material, combined with laminated aluminum, the "Construction Ahead" sign exhibits exceptional resistance to harsh weather conditions; Be it the relentless sun, pouring rain, or wild winds, this sign stands rigorously tested against nature's elements, ensuring continuous visibility and utility throughout its lifespan
  • Easy to Install: prioritizing the user's experience, the construction sign features rounded edges, minimizing any risk of scratches or injuries during installation; Pre-punched with reserved mounting holes and accompanied by mounting screws, users can effortlessly and securely apply the sign, ensuring swift deployment at construction sites

A window notice or, if local rules allow it, a portable sidewalk sign may make an obscured entrance easier to spot. Confirm sign and right-of-way rules before placing anything near a public road or sidewalk. FHWA guidance supports signage as one possible access strategy; it does not endorse a particular retail sign or promise that signage will restore sales.

Match outreach to the disruption

For a short, minor job, routine project information may be enough. Longer or more disruptive work may call for broader communication. Choose channels based on who needs the information and how quickly it may change:

  • Storefront notices: Reach people who pass the site; keep directions short and visible.
  • Owned online channels: Update your website, business profile, social accounts, and booking page with the same route details.
  • Direct messages: Send concise, verified updates to customers who have opted in.
  • Community and project channels: Ask nearby businesses, a business association, or the project information office whether they can share consistent access notices.
  • Printed route cards or flyers: Consider these as an additional channel for nearby customers when the disruption warrants it.

FHWA describes project information, alternate-route communication, timing, and evaluation as parts of public outreach. Its guidance suggests that the scale of a campaign should reflect how long and disruptive the work is: FHWA outreach guidance and FHWA campaign guidance.

Choose business adjustments with your finances in view

An offer, delivery option, flexible appointment, or alternate pickup arrangement might address a specific inconvenience, but there is no established evidence here that discounts reliably recover construction-related losses. Before changing prices or adding a service, consider the cost, gross margin, staffing, and capacity. A promotion that increases sales can still hurt cash flow if it costs more than the additional business is worth.

Use your own records to judge whether a change is helping. Compare similar weekdays and times where possible, and note construction phases alongside sales, transactions, cancellations, customer questions, or visits if you track them. These are practical directional measures, not proof that construction caused a particular change or that a promotion caused a recovery. FHWA recommends monitoring work-zone strategies and lists measures such as traffic volume, travel time, delay, incidents, complaints, and user costs; these are not a business sales formula. See FHWA Work Zone Traffic Management.

What to expect—and what not to assume

Construction conditions, access routes, and sign rules vary by location and can change over time. Verify current details with the project owner and relevant local authority. The available transportation-agency guidance supports access coordination and outreach, but does not establish a standard percentage of lost revenue, a typical recovery period, or a guaranteed marketing tactic. Use the business’s own baseline and records to make decisions, and revise the plan as site access changes.
