Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe fastest way to get your Social Security Statement is through the official Social Security Administration (SSA) my Social Security account. After you sign in, you can view your yearly earnings history and estimates for retirement, disability, and survivors benefits. Review those figures at least once a year—ideally after the prior year’s wages have been posted—because SSA uses the earnings in its record when calculating benefits.
The free online Statement is not an employer-by-employer payroll report. If you need itemized employer information or a certified earnings record, you must make a separate request with Form SSA-7050, which has fees. This guide explains both paths, how to check the numbers, and what to do when something is missing or does not belong to you.

What the online Social Security Statement shows
Your Statement is a personal summary of the information SSA has on file. It normally includes:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Year-by-year earnings history used in Social Security calculations.
- Estimated retirement benefits at different claiming ages.
- Estimated disability benefits, if you became disabled.
- Estimated survivors benefits for eligible family members.
SSA calculates benefits from covered earnings in its record, so an omitted or incorrectly reported year can affect a future benefit estimate. The agency’s earnings-review guidance tells workers to make sure its record of yearly income is up to date and encourages an annual review.

The Statement’s earnings section is a yearly total and generally does not identify each employer. In some Statement displays, earlier years can appear combined or summarized. The account service also provides a separate option to review the full earnings history online. That fuller history is still not the same as a certified, employer-itemized report.
How to create or access your my Social Security account
Use SSA’s official my Social Security account service. SSA lists two identity-provider sign-in choices: Login.gov and ID.me. Do not send account numbers, passwords, identity documents, or other sensitive details to anyone who offers to retrieve the Statement for you.
Choose a sign-in method
- Login.gov: SSA describes this as the best option for most people in the United States. The setup calls for an email address, a government-issued photo ID, and a phone number.
- ID.me: SSA lists this option for people inside or outside the United States. Setup calls for an email address, a government-issued photo ID, and a device with a camera.
Account requirements and identity-verification screens can change. Follow the current prompts on SSA’s account page rather than relying on an old screenshot or a third-party walkthrough.
Sign in or create the account
- Open SSA’s official my Social Security page by navigating to the agency’s website yourself.
- Select the option to sign in or create an account.
- Choose Login.gov or ID.me and complete that provider’s identity-verification process.
- Return to the SSA account service after verification and sign in.
- Look for the link labeled Social Security Statement or a similarly named earnings-and-benefits option. Labels may be revised as SSA updates the service.
If you cannot complete identity verification, do not repeatedly submit inconsistent information. Use the paper or telephone alternatives described below, or contact SSA for instructions about your particular account.
Open the Statement and the full earnings-history review
Once signed in, open the Social Security Statement first. Read the benefit estimates and the earnings history for every displayed year. Then look for the account’s separate full earnings-record review flow if you need to inspect years that are summarized in the Statement.
Save or print a copy for your own records if the service offers that option. A saved copy gives you a dated reference when you compare the figures with tax documents later. Treat the online display as the current record at the time you view it; SSA can update reported wages after an employer or self-employed worker submits corrected information.

How to check the earnings numbers
Use records that cover the same tax year
For each year, compare the SSA amount with documents you already have:
- Form W-2 wage statements from employers.
- Federal or state tax returns and schedules.
- Pay stubs, especially year-end summaries.
- Self-employment books, invoices, and tax records.
- Other wage or payment records that identify the year and payer.
Employers report covered wages to SSA. Self-employed people report their earnings directly through their tax filings. Keep the original documents and make a note of which document supports each disputed year; SSA may request copies if you seek a correction.
Check the previous year after SSA has time to post it
SSA advises checking in August to make sure the prior year’s amount is correct. An employer’s wage report or a self-employed person’s filing may not appear immediately after the calendar year ends. If you check earlier and the newest year is absent, that does not by itself prove an error. Recheck after the normal reporting cycle, then contact SSA if the amount is still missing or wrong.
Understand why the number may not equal gross pay
The earnings figure on a Social Security record is not a universal total of every dollar shown on a pay stub or tax return. Social Security-covered wages and self-employment earnings are reported under the program’s rules. In particular, earnings above the Social Security taxable maximum do not appear as Social Security-taxed earnings in the same way as total gross income. A difference can therefore be legitimate even when your gross pay is higher.
When comparing documents, first confirm that you are comparing the same year and the same type of income. Separate wages, self-employment earnings, and amounts that were not subject to Social Security tax. If the SSA figure still cannot be reconciled, preserve the supporting records and start a correction inquiry promptly.
What to do when earnings are missing or incorrect
Contact SSA as soon as you identify a likely error. The online correction process is available only to some people and some situations; seeing a discrepancy does not guarantee that an online edit button will appear.

Start with the online correction option, if offered
- Sign in to your my Social Security account and open the earnings-record review area.
- Select the year or wage item that appears incorrect.
- Follow the displayed instructions to describe the problem and upload or identify supporting records, if the service permits it.
- Keep the confirmation or reference information supplied by SSA.
If the account does not offer an online correction path, use SSA’s instructions for a paper submission or office appointment. Do not assume that a missing online option means the agency will not review the case.
Prepare for a paper or office review
SSA may ask you to complete Form SSA-7008, Request for Correction of Earnings Record, and provide evidence such as W-2s, pay stubs, tax returns, or other wage records. In some cases, SSA may require an in-person visit. Organize copies by tax year and include a short explanation of what the agency record says, what your documents show, and how the figures differ.
If earnings that belong to another person appear on your record, tell SSA that the wages are not yours and ask how to remove them. Mixed earnings can result from a reporting or identity problem, and the agency may request additional documentation before changing the record. Do not alter or discard documents while the review is pending.
Know the usual time limit, but treat it as a qualified rule
SSA says earnings corrections ordinarily cannot be made after 3 years, 3 months, and 15 days from the end of the taxable year in which the wages were paid. The agency also lists exceptions, so this is not an absolute deadline for every case. Because evidence can become harder to obtain, submit a correction as soon as you notice the problem and ask SSA whether an exception applies to your circumstances.
When you need a detailed or certified earnings record
The free online Statement and full online earnings-history view are designed for personal review. They do not provide the employer-by-employer detail that some legal, immigration, pension, lending, or benefit applications require.
For itemized employer information or certification, SSA directs applicants to Form SSA-7050, Request for Social Security Earnings Information. The form page lists the following standard fees effective October 1, 2024:

Paper and phone alternatives
Automatic paper Statements for some older workers
SSA says workers age 60 or older who do not have an online account currently receive a paper Statement three months before their birthday. This is a recurring mailing policy, not a guarantee that every worker will receive a Statement at another age or on a particular date.
Request a Statement by mail
If you cannot use the account, SSA’s review guidance says a requested Statement can take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive by mail. Use the current SSA request instructions and allow the full processing window before reporting a non-delivery. A mailed Statement still will not substitute for SSA-7050 when an employer-itemized or certified record is required.
Call SSA
For help with an earnings review, correction eligibility, or a failed online path, call 1-800-772-1213. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. SSA lists hours as Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in most U.S. time zones. Have your questions and the relevant tax years organized, but provide personal information only through the agency’s official process.
If you live outside the United States
SSA lists ID.me for people inside or outside the United States. The online access described for overseas users covers domestic earnings; it is not a general foreign-wage reporting service. If your question involves work outside the United States, ask SSA how that work is treated under the applicable rules before assuming it should appear in the domestic earnings history.
A practical annual review routine
- Choose a date: August is the month SSA specifically recommends for checking the previous year’s income.
- Open the Statement: Sign in to your official account and review benefit estimates and every displayed earnings year.
- Run the full-history review: Use the separate account flow when the Statement summarizes earlier years.
- Gather evidence: Put W-2s, tax returns, pay stubs, and self-employment records in year order.
- Reconcile differences: Check whether the difference reflects the taxable maximum, non-covered income, or a reporting delay before labeling it an error.
- Act on a real discrepancy: Use the online correction path if available; otherwise follow SSA’s Form SSA-7008, mail, phone, or office instructions.
- Track the case: Keep copies of everything submitted and note the date, method, and any reference number.
Common situations and the right response
The newest year is not displayed
Wait until after the normal employer and tax-reporting cycle, then check again around August. If the year remains absent, contact SSA with the W-2 or self-employment evidence for that year.

The SSA amount is lower than your gross wages
Confirm that you are comparing Social Security-covered earnings rather than total gross income. Earnings above the Social Security taxable maximum and other non-covered amounts can make the figures differ without indicating a record error.
A former employer’s wages are missing
Collect the W-2, year-end pay summary, and any other proof showing the employer, year, and amount. Ask SSA whether the correction can be handled online; if not, submit the documentation through the method SSA specifies.
Wages from an employer you never worked for appear
Report the item promptly as earnings that do not belong to you. SSA may need identity and wage documentation before removing it, and the ordinary correction period can limit late requests unless an exception applies.

Stop and use SSA’s telephone or paper route rather than creating multiple conflicting accounts. Ask which alternative documentation or appointment process applies to your situation.
