After you have paid every amount due on an Indian gold loan, ask the lender to close the account and release the pledged jewellery. Under the Reserve Bank of India’s 2025 gold-and-silver collateral directions, a covered lender should return it the same day and must do so within seven working days of full repayment or settlement. At collection, compare every item with the collateral certificate, record any discrepancy before signing, and keep a written handover receipt.
The exact rule that applies can depend on the lender and the loan’s timing. The directions were issued on June 6, 2025, updated on September 29, 2025, and require implementation as soon as possible but no later than April 1, 2026. Loans sanctioned before a lender adopted the directions continue under the earlier applicable guidelines, so check your sanction date and lender policy.

1. Confirm that the loan is completely repaid
Gold is released only after the account has been fully repaid or formally settled. A payment that covers only principal, or an instalment that leaves interest, penal charges, taxes or another contractual fee outstanding, is not necessarily enough to trigger release.
Request a written closure figure
Ask the lender for a current foreclosure or closure statement showing:
#1 Best Overall
- Outstanding principal;
- Interest calculated through the proposed payment date;
- Applicable fees, taxes, late charges or other amounts under your agreement; and
- The total required for full repayment or settlement.
Pay through a traceable channel and retain the receipt, bank debit entry or transaction confirmation. Then ask for written confirmation that the loan account is closed and that no amount remains payable. A lender’s contract may make release conditional on full payment plus applicable charges. For example, an RBL Bank gold-loan form marked March 2026 states that pledged articles are released within seven working days after receipt of full payment, including applicable charges; that wording is an example of a lender-specific contract, not a universal form for every lender.
Check whether the account was settled rather than repaid
A negotiated settlement can also qualify as “full repayment or settlement” for the purpose of release if the lender accepts the agreed amount and records the account as settled. Obtain the settlement letter and ensure it identifies the loan account and confirms that the pledged ornaments are to be returned.
Make a pre-closure file
Before making the final payment, assemble the loan account number, sanction or pledge date, collateral certificate, contact details registered with the lender and copies of earlier receipts. Check whether your address, mobile number and email are current. Those details matter because the RBI directions call for reminders when collateral remains uncollected, provided the lender has registered contact information. A complete file also makes it easier to prove when the lender received the amount needed for closure.
2. Ask for release and note the deadline
Contact the branch or servicing channel immediately after the account is closed. State the loan account number, date and amount of the final payment, and request a specific appointment or dispatch arrangement for the pledged jewellery. Ask the staff member to confirm whether collection is at the original branch or another designated location; do not assume every lender uses the same procedure.
The RBI timing standard
Paragraph 35 of the Reserve Bank of India (Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral) Directions, 2025, says:
“A lender shall release or return the pledged eligible collateral held as security to the borrower(s)/ legal heir(s) on the same day but in any case, not exceeding a maximum period of seven working days upon full repayment or settlement of the loan.”
Thus, same-day return is the expected norm, while seven working days is the maximum period for covered lenders. Count working days according to the lender’s operating calendar and keep evidence of when the lender received your full repayment. The deadline is tied to full repayment or accepted settlement, not to an earlier part-payment, a promise to pay or the date on which you first ask for the ornaments.

When you pay electronically, save the transaction timestamp and the lender’s acknowledgement of receipt. If you pay at a branch, request a stamped receipt that shows the date and amount. If the lender says its system has not yet posted the payment, ask when posting will occur and request that the explanation be put in writing.

When the lender is responsible for delay
The 2025 directions specify compensation of ₹5,000 for each day beyond the prescribed release period when the delay is attributable to the lender. This is a conditional regulatory remedy, not an automatic payment for every late collection. The lender must assess the cause and apply the rule where the delay is its responsibility.
If the delay is not attributable to the lender, the directions require it to communicate the reasons to the borrower or legal heir. Ask for those reasons in writing rather than relying on a telephone explanation. Keep a simple timeline listing the payment date, closure confirmation, promised release date, actual collection date and every call or email.
3. Prepare for collection without assuming one universal document list
The sources do not establish a single identity-document checklist for every lender. Before travelling, call the branch or customer-service channel and ask exactly what it requires for your loan and location. Confirm whether it wants:
Recommended Free Tools
- A government identity document and address proof;
- The loan account number, pledge receipt or collateral certificate;
- The closure statement or final-payment receipt;
- A recent photograph, signature or account-holder presence; and
- Any lender-specific release or indemnity form.
Take originals where requested and keep copies or digital scans. Do not surrender your only original receipt without obtaining an acknowledged copy. Ask whether the lender requires an appointment, whether all pledged items will be available at one visit and how long the verification is expected to take.
If another person will collect the jewellery
Tell the lender before the visit. Earlier Reserve Bank guidance for urban co-operative banks describes a process in which the borrower gives a signed letter of authority and confirmation, and the authorised person signs a receipt. That guidance is not a universal requirement for every bank, non-bank lender or loan vintage. The lender may require its own authority format, identity checks, witness or legal documentation. Obtain written approval before the authorised person travels, and ensure the receipt names both the borrower and the person who actually received the ornaments.
If the borrower has died
Ask the lender for its written legal-heir procedure before anyone visits. The available regulatory material does not establish one standard set of succession documents for all lenders. The lender may need proof of death, heirship, indemnities, probate or other documents, depending on the ownership record and local law. If heirs disagree, obtain advice from a qualified Indian lawyer rather than asking a branch to decide ownership informally. A legal heir is expressly included in the RBI release wording, but that does not eliminate the lender’s identity and succession checks.
4. Use the collateral certificate as your checklist
When a lender accepts pledged jewellery, the 2025 directions require a collateral certificate or e-certificate in duplicate. One copy remains with the loan records and one should be given to you. Bring your copy to the release appointment. If you were never given one, ask the lender for a copy of the original record before accepting the jewellery.

Read the certificate while the jewellery is placed in front of you. Check:

- The description and number of each ornament;
- Purity in carats;
- Gross weight;
- Net gold or silver content;
- Deductions for stones, alloy or other non-precious material;
- The image recorded at pledge;
- Any damage, breakage or defect noted at acceptance; and
- The value used when the loan was sanctioned.
Count items, inspect clasps, stones and other features, and compare markings or photographs where available. The directions require verification at release to the borrower’s satisfaction. Take enough time to do this before signing a receipt. If staff ask you to sign first and inspect later, explain that the receipt should accurately record the condition at handover.
What to do about a mismatch
If an item is missing, a quantity or weight differs, the purity appears inconsistent, or a new defect is visible, do not sign an unqualified receipt. Write the discrepancy on the handover document, photograph the items and certificate where permitted, and request a copy of the lender’s original collateral record and inspection notes. Ask for the lender’s formal complaint reference before leaving.
The 2025 directions provide for suitable compensation for loss or discrepancies. Where damage was caused by the lender, repair costs are to be borne by the lender. Preserve the certificate, payment proof, photographs, correspondence and any valuation report so the complaint can be assessed against the original record. Do not alter, clean, repair or hand the jewellery to a third party before the lender has inspected a disputed item.

After you have verified the jewellery, obtain a receipt that identifies the loan account, date of return and the person receiving the items. It should state whether the items were accepted in good condition or list every exception you recorded. Keep the receipt with:
- The pledge receipt or collateral certificate;
- The closure or settlement letter;
- Final-payment evidence;
- Emails, letters, SMS messages and complaint numbers; and
- Photographs or scans of the returned items and their packaging, if relevant.
Earlier Reserve Bank guidance for urban co-operative banks expressly calls for a borrower receipt after ornaments are returned. Even where a different lender’s current process uses an electronic acknowledgement, retain the downloadable copy or confirmation email. Check that the acknowledgement is dated and linked to the correct loan account; a generic visit slip may not prove that the pledged articles were actually handed back.
6. Escalate a missed deadline or unresolved discrepancy
Start with a written lender complaint
Send the complaint through the lender’s stated grievance channel and, where practical, to the branch manager. Include the loan account number, full-repayment date, the date the seven-working-day period expired, and the remedy requested. Attach payment and closure evidence, but keep the originals.
For a delay, ask the lender to confirm whether it accepts responsibility and to calculate any ₹5,000-per-day compensation required by the RBI directions. For a discrepancy, identify each item and request inspection against the collateral certificate, correction or return, and any compensation or repair payment applicable to the loss or damage. Ask for a written response and a target date, rather than relying only on a call-centre ticket.

A useful complaint record
Use a dated subject line such as “Release of pledged gold after full repayment—loan account [number].” State the payment amount and date, attach the closure confirmation, quote the promised or required release date, and describe each missing, damaged or mismatched item separately. Request preservation of the original valuation and collateral records. Keep the sent email, delivery confirmation and complaint number in the same file.

If the lender says the delay is outside its control
Request a written explanation naming the event and the dates affected. The directions distinguish lender-attributable delay from delay for which the lender is not responsible; a complaint does not by itself prove eligibility for compensation. If the explanation changes, ask the lender to reconcile the dates with its payment and inventory records.
Uncollected collateral
The directions tell lenders to periodically remind borrowers or legal heirs by letter, email or SMS, where contact information is registered, when pledged collateral has not been collected after repayment. Collateral remaining with a lender for more than two years after repayment or settlement is treated as unclaimed under those directions. Do not wait for a reminder: contact the lender promptly and update your address, phone number and email if they have changed. Unclaimed status does not make it sensible to postpone collection or discard your paperwork.
7. Account for older loans and lender-specific rules
Before relying on the 2025 timeline, identify both the lender and the loan’s sanction or adoption date. The directions were updated on September 29, 2025 and set April 1, 2026 as the latest implementation date. A loan sanctioned before the lender adopted the directions remains subject to the earlier applicable guidelines. Your agreement, closure letter and the lender’s published policy may therefore matter alongside the current RBI baseline.

8. Common situations that need extra care
The branch says a fee is still due
Ask for an itemised statement and the contractual clause authorising the amount. Pay only after you understand whether it is part of the agreed closure figure, and obtain a revised written confirmation that the account is closed.
The pledge receipt is missing
Tell the lender before visiting. The lender may be able to locate the duplicate collateral certificate in its records, but the available sources do not establish that every lender will accept the same substitute declaration or indemnity. Follow the lender’s written process and keep a copy of any declaration you sign.
The jewellery belongs to someone else
Do not ask the lender to release it to an informal claimant. Ownership disputes are not resolved by the seven-working-day release rule alone. Ask for the lender’s legal process and obtain qualified local legal advice if the parties cannot agree.
The lender is not a covered regulated entity
The RBI directions cited here apply to covered lenders. If the loan came from a local or unregulated lender, do not assume that the RBI timeline or compensation provision applies. Review the contract and seek advice from an Indian consumer or property lawyer about recovery and documentation.

The lender offers only a partial return
Ask which items the lender says remain pledged and why. Compare its explanation with the closure statement and collateral certificate. Do not treat a partial handover as final acceptance if the account was fully repaid and the certificate lists additional ornaments.
9. Why the paperwork matters
In a September 30, 2024 supervisory communication, the RBI described deficiencies it had observed in some gold-loan practices, including customers not being present during valuation and weak auction transparency. That communication was directed at covered entities’ policies and practices; it does not establish what happened in any individual loan. For a borrower collecting jewellery, the practical lesson is to preserve the original certificate, insist on an item-by-item check and document disagreements immediately.
10. A concise collection-day checklist
- Carry the collateral certificate or pledge receipt, closure evidence and the identification documents the lender confirmed by phone.
- Ask the staff member to show every pledged item before you sign.
- Compare description, count, purity, gross and net weight, deductions, image and recorded defects.
- Write any mismatch or damage on the receipt and request a complaint number.
- Sign only an accurate acknowledgement, obtain your copy and store it with the loan records.
- If the release is late, send a written complaint with the full-repayment date and request the lender’s explanation and any compensation due under the applicable rule.
Frequently Asked Questions
How soon should I get my gold after full repayment?
For a lender covered by the RBI’s 2025 directions, same-day return is the expected norm and seven working days is the maximum after full repayment or settlement. Check whether your older loan remains under earlier applicable guidance.
Does the seven-working-day rule apply after a part-payment?
No. The trigger is full repayment or an accepted settlement recorded by the lender. Ask for a closure or settlement letter before requesting release.
What if the lender delays returning the jewellery?
Complain in writing, preserve payment and closure proof, and request the lender’s explanation. Where delay is attributable to the lender, the 2025 directions specify ₹5,000 for each day beyond the prescribed period; it is not automatic for every delay.
What should I check before signing the handover receipt?
Compare each ornament with the collateral certificate: description, count, purity, gross and net weight, deductions, image and recorded defects. Write any mismatch or damage on the receipt before signing.
Can someone else collect the gold for me?
Ask the lender in advance. Earlier RBI guidance for urban co-operative banks describes written authority and a receipt, but requirements vary and that guidance is not universal. Follow the lender’s own authorization and identity process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat happens if the borrower has died or the receipt is missing?
Request the lender’s written legal-heir or missing-receipt procedure before visiting. There is no single document list established for every lender; disputed ownership may require qualified local legal advice.
The Bottom Line
Pay the exact closure amount, obtain written confirmation that the account is fully repaid or settled, and request release immediately. For covered lenders, RBI’s 2025 directions expect same-day return and set a seven-working-day maximum, with conditional ₹5,000-per-day compensation for lender-caused delay. At handover, verify every ornament against the collateral certificate, record discrepancies before signing, and keep the receipt and complaint trail.
