You can receive a 401(k) employer match while making student-loan payments only if your employer has adopted the optional SECURE 2.0 qualified student-loan payment match feature. Ask the plan administrator to confirm that feature, then verify your loan, the match formula, the annual payment cap, certification method, deadline, vesting rules and payment schedule. A qualifying payment creates an employer contribution to your retirement account; it is not cash paid back to you.

What the student-loan match actually is

Section 110 of the SECURE 2.0 Act permits an employer to treat an employee’s qualified student-loan payments as the basis for an employer matching contribution. The provision covers eligible 401(k), 403(b), SIMPLE IRA and governmental 457(b) plans. The Internal Revenue Service describes the provision in Notice 2024-63.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Permission is not a mandate. Congress allowed the design, but each employer decides whether to add it to its retirement plan. An employer can also set administrative procedures within the statutory rules. Therefore, the first question is not how much you owe; it is whether your particular plan includes the feature.

The law applies to contributions for plan years beginning after December 31, 2023. Notice 2024-63’s detailed guidance applies to plan years beginning after December 31, 2024. For earlier plan years beginning after December 31, 2023, the IRS says plan sponsors may rely on a good-faith, reasonable interpretation of the statute.

Follow this six-step process

1. Ask whether your plan adopted the feature

Send HR, benefits or the recordkeeper a precise question: “Does our plan match qualified student-loan payments under SECURE 2.0 section 110?” Ask specifically about the 401(k) plan rather than assuming every retirement plan offered by the employer has the same terms.

If the answer is no, your loan payments cannot generate this particular retirement match. You may still be able to contribute to the 401(k) normally, and your employer may offer a separate educational-assistance benefit described below.

2. Obtain the controlling plan instructions

Request the Summary Plan Description, a plan notice or the administrator’s written claim instructions. Record the answers to each item in this checklist:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which plan year applies to a payment?
  • Which employees are eligible?
  • What match rate and formula apply?
  • Is there an annual or per-pay-period claim deadline?
  • Are claims filed through payroll, the retirement-plan recordkeeper or a third-party administrator?
  • How often are student-loan matches deposited?
  • When do those contributions vest?
  • What documents or certifications must accompany each claim?

These are plan-specific operating terms. The statute does not supply one universal deadline, portal or match percentage.

3. Confirm that the loan and payment qualify

A qualified student-loan payment is made by the employee during the plan year to repay a qualified education loan, within the applicable annual limit, and is certified under the plan’s process. You must have a legal obligation to repay the debt. The loan proceeds must have been used for qualifying higher-education expenses for you, your spouse or your dependent, subject to the statutory conditions.

Keep statements showing the borrower, account number, payment date and amount. Save bank or servicer confirmations as well as any payroll or benefits submission. Do not assume that a payment made by another person can be claimed by you simply because you are related to the borrower.

4. Calculate the annual payment room before stopping your own deferrals

For 401(k) and 403(b) plans, the qualifying-payment amount for the year cannot exceed the applicable section 402(g) limit—or your compensation, if lower—minus your elective deferrals for that year. In formula form:

Maximum qualifying loan payments = min(applicable section 402(g) limit, compensation) − elective deferrals.

The limit changes by tax year, and the calculation uses your own deferrals. Check the limit for the relevant year rather than relying on a number from an old article or a prior plan notice. A student-loan payment does not create extra room above the statutory limit.

For an illustration only, suppose a hypothetical section 402(g) limit is $20,000, compensation is $80,000 and your elective deferrals total $8,000. The qualifying-payment ceiling under the formula would be $12,000. The figures are examples, not a current legal limit or a promise about your plan.

5. Complete the required certification

The IRS notice allows a plan to require certification for each payment or to accept one certification covering the year. The information can include the payment amount and date, confirmation that you made the payment, and an affirmative statement that the loan is qualified and was incurred by you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some payment details may be independently verified, but the statements that the loan qualifies and that you incurred it require your affirmative certification. Follow the plan’s exact method and retain a copy of everything submitted. A missed certification or deadline can prevent an otherwise qualifying payment from being counted.

6. Check the deposit and vesting after filing

Only payments made during a plan year can support a student-loan match for that same plan year. A plan may deposit this match less frequently than its ordinary elective-deferral match, but it must contribute the student-loan match at least annually. Check your account after the stated deposit date and compare the contribution with the plan’s formula.

Student-loan matches must vest in the same manner as the plan’s elective-deferral matches. If your plan uses a vesting schedule, review it before treating the contribution as permanently yours.

Who and what qualifies as a student-loan payment

The employee must have the repayment obligation

The payment must be made by an employee who is legally obligated to repay the qualified education loan. A cosigner with a legal payment obligation may qualify for a match on payments that the cosigner makes. A guarantor generally does not have that obligation unless the primary borrower defaults. The person who makes the payment is the person who can receive a match based on it.

The debt must finance qualifying education

The loan proceeds must have been used for qualifying higher-education expenses for the employee, spouse or dependent, subject to the statutory requirements. A personal loan used for unrelated spending is not transformed into a qualified education loan merely because payments are sent to a student-loan servicer.

Payment timing matters

A payment made outside the plan year cannot be shifted into a different plan year for this purpose. If your employer’s plan year differs from the calendar year, use the dates in the plan documents, not simply January through December. Ask whether the plan uses the date the servicer receives the money, the date it clears your bank or another stated convention.

How the annual cap interacts with your 401(k) strategy

The payment cap is designed to coordinate loan-based matches with elective-deferral limits. Increasing your 401(k) contribution can reduce the amount of student-loan payments that can be counted under the formula. Reducing deferrals may increase the loan-payment room, but it can also reduce the amount you personally save and may affect other plan features.

Input What to verify Why it matters
Section 402(g) limit The limit for the applicable tax year It sets one side of the statutory ceiling for 401(k) and 403(b) plans.
Compensation Your compensation used under the plan’s rules If compensation is lower than the section 402(g) limit, compensation controls that part of the calculation.
Elective deferrals Your total deferrals for the year, including any already made Deferrals are subtracted from the ceiling.
Qualifying loan payments Payments you made during the plan year and certified Only payments within the remaining room can support the match.

Because the limit is year-specific, calculate the room whenever you change your contribution rate, receive a compensation change or approach the end of the plan year. Ask the administrator how it handles deferrals made before you joined the student-loan feature and whether it performs any automatic reconciliation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How the match must compare with the ordinary 401(k) match

The statutory design requires parity between elective-deferral matches and qualified student-loan payment matches. A plan offering the feature must use the same match rate for both types of contributions, limit student-loan matches to employees otherwise eligible for elective-deferral matches, make the feature available to all employees eligible for elective-deferral matches under the applicable rules and vest the two types of match in the same manner.

Parity does not mean every employee receives the same dollar amount. Your result still depends on the plan’s formula, your eligible compensation, the certified loan payments and the annual cap after deferrals. The plan documents control the details.

Choose a sensible split between deferrals and loan payments

Do not stop contributing automatically when you hear that loan payments can earn a match. First identify how your plan calculates the match and whether your current deferrals already capture the ordinary match. Then model the alternatives using the administrator’s formula.

Situation Question to ask Action to consider
You receive an ordinary match only on your own deferrals Will loan payments qualify for the same match rate? Compare the value of continuing deferrals with the retirement contribution generated by certified payments.
Your deferrals are high relative to the annual cap How much qualifying-payment room remains after deferrals? Ask for a year-to-date calculation before changing contributions.
You are close to the plan-year deadline Can late-year payments still be certified and processed? Follow the written deadline and submit records promptly.
You are subject to a vesting schedule When do the student-loan match contributions become vested? Include the vesting schedule in any comparison with direct loan assistance.

The right split depends on cash flow, interest rates, emergency savings, tax considerations and your plan’s terms. The student-loan feature changes the source of the matching contribution; it does not eliminate the need to choose an affordable savings rate.

Do not confuse the match with section 127 educational assistance

An employer can also offer educational assistance under Internal Revenue Code section 127. That is a separate benefit from a retirement-plan match: the employer may use it to pay qualifying student-loan principal or interest directly rather than contributing to your 401(k).

The IRS educational-assistance FAQ states that qualifying student-loan payments and other educational assistance share a combined $5,250 per calendar year federal exclusion. Unused amounts do not carry forward. The amount is adjusted for cost-of-living increases for taxable years beginning after 2026, so check the current IRS guidance for later years at the IRS educational-assistance FAQ.

The employer’s written section 127 plan generally must include the student-loan benefit. An amendment may not be needed if the existing plan already covers all permitted benefits, but ask HR to confirm the written terms. Using section 127 assistance can also affect how much of the $5,250 exclusion remains for tuition, books or other eligible educational assistance in the same calendar year.

Feature SECURE 2.0 student-loan match Section 127 educational assistance
What you receive An employer contribution to the retirement plan Eligible employer assistance toward qualifying education expenses or student-loan principal or interest
Where it goes Your 401(k), 403(b), SIMPLE IRA or governmental 457(b), if covered by the plan Handled under the employer’s written educational-assistance program
Key annual rule For 401(k) and 403(b), the section 402(g)/compensation ceiling is reduced by elective deferrals Qualifying loan payments and other educational assistance share a $5,250 calendar-year exclusion under the IRS FAQ
Adoption Optional retirement-plan feature Requires an eligible written section 127 program that includes the benefit
Unused amount Handled under the plan’s matching and vesting rules The $5,250 exclusion does not carry forward

Documents to keep for an audit or dispute

  • The Summary Plan Description and any student-loan match notice.
  • The plan year dates and your eligibility confirmation.
  • Loan statements identifying the borrower and debt.
  • Servicer receipts or bank records showing each payment date and amount.
  • Copies of annual or per-payment certifications.
  • Messages confirming claim receipt, approval or rejection.
  • Account statements showing the employer contribution and vesting status.

Organize records by plan year. This makes it easier to show that each payment fell within the correct year and that the amount did not exceed the remaining statutory room.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming the law makes the benefit automatic

SECURE 2.0 authorizes the feature but does not require adoption. If HR says the plan does not offer it, ask whether a section 127 program or another repayment benefit exists instead.

Using a payment made by someone else

Only the person who made the qualifying payment can receive a match based on it. Clarify the legal obligation and payer before submitting a claim, especially for family payments, cosigned loans and automatic payments from a shared account.

Quoting an outdated annual limit

The section 402(g) limit changes by year. Use the applicable year’s limit and subtract your actual elective deferrals; do not rely on a static dollar figure copied from an older explanation.

Missing the plan’s certification deadline

The IRS rules permit annual or per-payment certification, but your plan chooses the operating process. Put the stated deadline on your calendar and submit records before it, allowing time for a servicer statement to arrive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting a cash reimbursement

The described student-loan match is an employer contribution to a retirement account. It does not reimburse your bank account or reduce the loan balance directly.

Ignoring vesting

A contribution shown in your account may not be fully yours until the plan’s vesting requirements are met. Compare the student-loan match with the ordinary match using the same vesting schedule.

Combining section 127 and retirement-plan rules

Track section 127 assistance separately from the retirement match. Educational assistance uses a calendar-year exclusion, while the student-loan match follows the retirement plan year and its matching rules.

Questions to put in writing to your administrator

  1. Has the plan adopted SECURE 2.0 section 110 qualified student-loan payment matching?
  2. What plan year and payment-date rule apply?
  3. Which employees and loan types qualify?
  4. What is the exact match formula and eligibility requirement?
  5. How does the plan calculate the section 402(g)-based ceiling after my elective deferrals?
  6. Do I certify each payment or once annually?
  7. What payment records and loan statements are required?
  8. Where and by what date must I submit a claim?
  9. When are student-loan match contributions deposited?
  10. What vesting schedule applies?
  11. Does the employer offer section 127 educational assistance, and how does using it affect the $5,250 calendar-year exclusion?

Save the written answers with your plan documents. If an answer conflicts with the Summary Plan Description, ask the administrator which document governs and request a corrected explanation before relying on the benefit.
