To get the most value from a Costco membership, compare your likely annual savings and benefits with the fee—not just the size of your cart. Costco’s Executive membership adds $65 a year to the $65 Gold Star fee, and its 2% reward breaks even on about $3,250 in qualifying purchases made after you upgrade. Gas, food-court purchases and other excluded transactions do not count, so calculate from eligible spending rather than total Costco spending.
Gold Star or Executive: start with the fee and break-even point
Costco Customer Service lists Gold Star at $65 a year and says Executive costs an additional $65 a year. Executive members can earn an annual 2% reward on qualifying purchases. At that fee and rate, $3,250 in qualifying annual spending produces $65 in rewards: $65 ÷ 0.02 = $3,250. This is a calculation from Costco’s published fee and reward rate, not a Costco-published spending benchmark. Use $3,250 as a starting point, not a guarantee or universal recommendation. The estimate assumes you hold Executive before making the purchases, they qualify, and refunds or reward rules do not reduce the amount. The reward is capped at $1,250 in a 12-month period. An Executive membership may still suit someone below the break-even point if its other benefits are genuinely useful, but assign those benefits value only after checking the terms and comparing alternatives.

Costco pages have also surfaced $60 Gold Star and $120 Executive pricing, which conflicts with the later-dated $65/$130 customer-service answer. Prices and offers can change; check the live membership purchase page before joining or upgrading. Costco says an upgrade fee may be prorated for the remaining membership period on its Join Costco page.

Calculate your qualifying spending—not your total Costco bill
Build the estimate from purchases made by the eligible cardholders after the upgrade, then remove refunds and any excluded transactions. Costco’s current U.S. terms control which purchases count; do not assume every warehouse, online or service transaction earns the reward.
- Choose a 12-month estimate. Use a representative year of spending, rather than an unusually large stock-up or a single trip.
- Include only eligible cardholders. Costco says purchases by the primary member and active primary household cardholder apply. Purchases made before the Executive upgrade do not count.
- Separate known exclusions. U.S. gasoline and food-court purchases do not earn the Executive reward. Costco’s exclusion list also includes state-specific and transaction-specific items, so check its Executive membership and reward terms for the specific purchase.
- Account for refunds and reward rules. A refund can affect the reward, and eligible reward totals remain subject to Costco’s terms and annual cap.
- Estimate the reward. Multiply the remaining qualified spend by 0.02, then compare the result with the additional $65 annual fee. Treat the result as an estimate, not a promised payout.
Keep gasoline and food-court spending out of the 2% estimate
Costco’s U.S. Executive reward excludes gasoline and food-court purchases. Gas may still be worthwhile if the member-only price beats the alternatives available to you, but that is separate savings—not part of the 2% reward calculation. Compare the actual local price and any extra travel or waiting time before assigning it value.

Apply special rules to Costco Travel
Costco says qualifying direct Travel purchases earn the Executive reward after travel is completed, and the member must be Executive when the travel begins. Some charges and third-party travel are excluded. Check the reward FAQ and transaction terms before counting a trip in your estimate; do not treat the full booking price as automatically eligible.

Costco lists services and offerings that include member gasoline pricing, pharmacy, optical, tires, food court and Travel. Their value depends on what you would use anyway, local availability, the relevant transaction’s terms and the alternatives you can actually get. A service appearing in Costco’s membership lineup does not mean every charge for it qualifies for the 2% reward—or that using it is cheaper for your household.

- Gasoline: Compare the local member price with nearby stations, including any extra distance or time involved.
- Pharmacy and optical: Compare the specific prescription, product or service price and applicable terms with your current provider.
- Tires: Compare the full quote and service details with alternatives, rather than assuming the membership itself creates savings.
- Travel: Compare the itinerary, included features, cancellation terms and total cost with other options. Count only qualifying direct purchases toward the reward.
- Bulk household purchases: Buy a larger quantity only when you expect to use it before it expires or degrades. Airtight pantry containers may help organize dry goods you already use, but containers do not establish that bulk buying saves money.
Costco’s customer-service answer also states: “We offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee and will cancel and refund membership fees at any time if a member is dissatisfied.” This statement concerns membership fees; it should not be read as a promise about refunds for merchandise or other products. Check current offers and the fine print before counting them
Costco Travel and Viator offer
Costco’s Executive Reward FAQ says a Costco-exclusive 15% discount on activities, tours and excursions booked through CostcoTravel.com begins June 4, 2026, with the discount applied automatically at checkout. The FAQ says those excursions do not count toward the annual Executive 2% reward. This is a dated offer, not a permanent membership saving; verify its terms and availability before booking. SameDay.Costco.com credit
A Costco membership comparison page has surfaced a $10 monthly credit on an eligible SameDay.Costco.com order of $150 or more, powered by Instacart. Availability may depend on account and location, and the page does not establish that every member can use it. The reward begins accruing on qualifying purchases made after the upgrade; earlier purchases do not count. Costco says it issues the reward approximately two months before renewal. Its FAQ says the reward can be redeemed toward most merchandise at U.S. warehouse front-end registers, but not at self-checkout. For use at Costco.com, the FAQ says a member may use the reward at a warehouse to buy a Costco Shop Card. Check Costco’s current redemption rules before relying on a particular method or timing. A practical decision rule
- Choose Gold Star if your expected qualifying purchases after upgrading are well below $3,250 and you do not place enough personal value on Executive-specific benefits to cover the difference.
- Consider Executive if your realistic qualified spending approaches or exceeds $3,250, or if benefits you will actually use make the additional fee worthwhile to you.
- Recheck before upgrading if your spending estimate includes gasoline, food-court purchases, pre-upgrade purchases, non-eligible cardholders, or travel and service charges whose qualification you have not confirmed.
For a new member or an upgrade partway through a membership year, check the current fee and any applicable proration at checkout; then base the decision on the remaining term and eligible purchases you expect to make after the upgrade.
