Amazon generally does not refund the difference when an ordinary purchase becomes cheaper after you place the order. The old advice about a universal 30-day Amazon price-adjustment policy is outdated.
You can still ask Amazon Customer Service for a discretionary courtesy credit. If that fails, returning the original item and buying it again at the lower price may work—but only if the item is eligible for return and the savings outweigh the cost and hassle. Eligible pre-orders are the main exception because Amazon’s Pre-Order Price Guarantee can automatically apply a lower Amazon.com price.

First, confirm that it is the same Amazon item
A lower number on Amazon does not necessarily mean your purchase qualifies for any kind of price-change request. Before contacting support, compare the current offer with your order.
- Product: Check the same product detail page and ASIN, not just a similar-looking item.
- Variation: Confirm the size, color, quantity, edition, bundle, condition, and storage capacity are identical.
- Seller: Check whether the offer is sold by Amazon.com or a third-party seller.
- Fulfillment: Compare Amazon-fulfilled and seller-fulfilled offers where relevant.
- Actual price: Make sure the lower number is the item price, not a “starting at” price or a price that requires a coupon, Prime membership, Subscribe & Save, or another promotion.
Amazon Marketplace listings can have several sellers, and the featured offer can change. A cheaper offer from a different seller is not a price adjustment on your existing order.

Take screenshots of the current listing and your original order total. They can make the conversation with support easier, although screenshots do not create a right to the difference.
Option 1: Ask Amazon for a courtesy refund
Amazon does not publish a general entitlement to a post-purchase price adjustment for ordinary purchases. However, Customer Service may sometimes offer a one-time courtesy credit or refund. It is discretionary, so one agent cannot promise that every order will receive one.
- Open Your Orders on Amazon.
- Select the relevant order.
- Choose Problem with order, if that option appears.
- Select the closest price- or order-related topic.
- Alternatively, open Customer Service or Contact Us, select the order, and choose Chat or Request a phone call if available.
The exact menus vary by account, order type, seller, and issue. Contact seller is appropriate when you have a problem with a third-party seller; it is not an Amazon price-adjustment button.
Keep the request short and accurate:
“The identical item on this order has dropped from $X to $Y. I understand Amazon may not have a general price-adjustment policy. Could you check whether a one-time courtesy refund or credit is available?”

If the agent offers a credit, ask for the amount, payment method, and any conditions in writing. Save the chat transcript or take a screenshot. Do not treat an informal promise to refund the difference as a guarantee, particularly if you plan to return and reorder.
Option 2: Return the item and buy it again
If Amazon declines a courtesy adjustment, the practical way to get the lower current price may be to return the original item and place a new order. This is not a price adjustment; it is a separate purchase and return.
- Go to Your Orders.
- Select the purchase.
- Click Return or replace items.
- Choose the return reason that truthfully describes your situation.
- Select from the return methods Amazon offers.
- Place a new order at the lower price only after checking the new offer carefully.
Amazon says most items are generally returnable within 30 days of the estimated delivery date, but the deadline shown for your specific order controls. Some products, sellers, categories, and conditions have different rules or are nonreturnable.
Calculate whether the return is worthwhile
Compare the real savings rather than focusing only on the headline price drop:

Do not select “defective,” “damaged,” or “wrong item” when the real reason is that the price fell. Use an accurate change-of-mind or other applicable reason. Misrepresenting the return reason can create problems with return shipping, refunds, or account activity.
Risks of returning and reordering
- The lower price may disappear before you complete the replacement order.
- The new offer may be from a different seller or have different fulfillment, warranty, condition, or return terms.
- The item may no longer be eligible for return.
- A seller-fulfilled order may involve seller-specific return handling.
- You may need to pay for the replacement before the original refund is processed.
- A coupon, promotional credit, or other discount may not carry over.
If you need the item continuously, keep the original until the replacement arrives and is confirmed. Never assume Amazon will refund the difference after you reorder unless Customer Service has specifically confirmed that arrangement for your case.
Exception: Amazon’s Pre-Order Price Guarantee
Eligible pre-orders have a separate published protection. Under Amazon’s Pre-Order Price Guarantee, Amazon says you pay the lowest price offered by Amazon.com between the time you place the order and the end of the release date.
This does not apply to every pre-order. Check that:

Amazon says the order summary normally reflects the lowest eligible price within 24–72 hours after release. If the adjustment does not appear after that period, contact Customer Service with the order number and the guarantee language shown at checkout.

A sensible order of operations
- Verify the exact ASIN, variation, seller, condition, and final current price.
- Check the return deadline displayed under Your Orders.
- Ask Customer Service once, politely, for a courtesy adjustment.
- Save any response and details of an offered credit.
- Compare the savings with taxes, return costs, lost discounts, cash-flow impact, and the risk of a changed listing.
- Return and reorder only when the transaction is genuinely worthwhile and the return reason is accurate.
- If it is an eligible pre-order, allow 24–72 hours after release for the guaranteed adjustment before contacting support.
For future purchases, checking the price shortly before ordering can reduce this problem, but price tracking is not a substitute for Amazon’s return terms. A price drop after delivery is usually a negotiation opportunity—not an automatic refund right.
