You can get help with federal student-loan payments, repayment plans, and forgiveness questions without hiring a debt-relief company. Sign in to StudentAid.gov, open your account Dashboard to identify the federal loan servicer assigned to you, and contact that servicer through the official contact details shown in your account. Servicers answer questions, process payments, explain repayment plans, and handle plan changes for the U.S. Department of Education at no charge.
This guide covers federal loans only. Private-loan borrowers must use their lender or private servicer, not the federal StudentAid.gov process.

What free federal student-loan help includes
A federal loan servicer works on the Department of Education’s behalf. The servicer is the company that sends billing information, receives payments, maintains your servicing account, and helps you navigate available federal repayment options. Federal Student Aid (FSA) manages federal loan records and oversees servicers, while the servicer handles your day-to-day account questions.
Free assistance can include:
- Explaining your current balance, interest, payment due date, and account status.
- Reviewing repayment plans and helping you request a plan change.
- Discussing whether an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan may fit your income and family circumstances.
- Explaining deferment, forbearance, consolidation, and other account actions that may apply to your loans.
- Checking whether your payment history or employment information may support a forgiveness or discharge program, subject to that program’s eligibility rules.
- Correcting servicing or payment-record problems and explaining what documentation is needed.
FSA also provides account support through its Federal Student Aid Information Center and its virtual assistant, Aidan. Use the current contact methods displayed after signing in rather than relying on a phone number copied from an old article, message, or social-media post.

How to find your federal loan servicer safely
1. Sign in to StudentAid.gov yourself
Type StudentAid.gov into your browser or use a bookmark you created yourself. Do not follow a sign-in link in an unsolicited text, email, or social-media message. The official account is the starting point for identifying who currently services your loans.
2. Open the account Dashboard
After signing in, review the Dashboard and loan details. The servicer name and account information shown there are more reliable than a contact name supplied by a caller or marketer. Servicer assignments can change when the Department transfers a loan, so check the Dashboard whenever you receive a transfer notice or a message you do not recognize.
3. Use the official contact details
Open the servicer information in your account and use the email, chat, telephone, or mailing options listed there. If you cannot sign in or are unsure which servicer is connected to your federal loans, contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center through the current instructions on StudentAid.gov.
4. Verify a transfer
When a loan moves to a new servicer, the Department of Education still owns the federal loan; the new company performs servicing duties. Confirm the transfer in your StudentAid.gov account and in official correspondence. A legitimate transfer should not require you to pay a fee simply to keep making federal payments.

What to ask your servicer
Prepare your questions before you call, chat, or send a secure message. A focused request helps the representative identify the right application or documentation.
- “What repayment plans are available for each of my loans?”
- “How do I lower my payment amount?”
- “Would an income-driven plan be appropriate for my income and family size?”
- “Can I pause my payments, and what would that cost over time?”
- “Which months count toward forgiveness, discharge, or another program I am pursuing?”
- “Do you need updated income, family-size, employment, or tax information from me?”
- “What is the deadline for the action described in my notice?”
- “Can you send the explanation and any payment estimate through my secure account?”
Record the date, the representative’s name or identification number if provided, the case number, documents requested, and the deadline you were given. Keep copies of submitted forms and confirmation screens. If the answer is unclear, ask the servicer to explain the effect on your payment, interest, total balance, and progress toward any discharge or forgiveness program.
If your payment is unaffordable
Contact the servicer before you miss a payment
Tell the servicer as soon as you know the scheduled amount is not manageable. Waiting can lead to delinquency, additional collection activity, and fewer practical choices. Ask for a review of every repayment plan for which you might qualify, not only a temporary pause.

IDR plans calculate payments using factors such as income and family size. Depending on those circumstances, an IDR payment may be as low as $0. A $0 scheduled payment is still a plan payment; it does not mean the loan has been forgiven, and eligibility and recertification requirements still apply.

Federal Student Aid generally recommends considering IDR before deferment or forbearance when the affordability problem is expected to last. Ask the servicer to explain the plan’s eligibility rules, how often income information must be updated, what happens if your income changes, and whether your particular loans qualify.
Use the official repayment application and calculator
After signing in to StudentAid.gov, use the current Repayment Calculator and online application process to review available plans. Treat any projected amount as an estimate until the servicer approves the application and confirms the effective date. Your actual bill can depend on loan type, outstanding principal, interest, income, family size, and information in your account.
Repayment options: compare the trade-offs
No single option is best for every borrower. Compare the choices on the same five questions: what you pay now, how the payment is calculated, what happens to interest, whether the time counts toward a program, and how long the option lasts.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Income-driven repayment | Can be lower than a standard payment and may be $0 in some circumstances. | Based on factors such as income and family size, subject to the plan’s rules. | Interest treatment varies by loan and plan; a lower payment does not automatically mean a lower total cost. | Some qualifying payments may count toward applicable programs, but the specific program and payment requirements control. | Only eligible borrowers and loans qualify; income and family information generally must be updated as required. |
| Deferment | Payments are temporarily paused when an approved deferment applies. | Based on a qualifying condition and the documentation required for that deferment. | Interest often continues on at least some federal loans, increasing the balance or total amount paid unless handled under the applicable rules. | Time in deferment may not count toward some forgiveness or discharge programs. | Temporary and condition-specific; the servicer must confirm the qualifying reason and end date. |
| Forbearance | Payments may be paused or reduced for an approved period. | Based on the type of forbearance and the servicer’s approval. | Interest generally continues to accrue, which can increase the balance and repayment cost. | Months in forbearance may not count toward some programs, depending on the program and the type of forbearance. | Temporary, with eligibility, limits, and renewal rules that depend on the specific forbearance. |
Ask for a borrower-specific comparison before choosing. The same pause can have different consequences depending on your loan type, current plan, interest rate, and the forgiveness or discharge program you are pursuing.

Deferment and forbearance: questions to answer first
A payment pause can solve a short-term cash problem, but it is not automatically cost-free. Before accepting one, ask the servicer:
- Will interest accrue on each of my loans during the exact dates of the pause?
- Will unpaid interest be added to principal later, and if so, when?
- What will my estimated balance and payment be when the pause ends?
- Will these months count toward the forgiveness, discharge, or payment-history requirement I care about?
- What is the precise start date, end date, and renewal limit?
- What lower-payment or IDR alternatives are available instead?
Obtain the answer in writing through your secure account when possible. A representative can explain the rules that apply to your loans; a general internet explanation cannot determine your individual outcome.

Federal Student Aid’s current FAQ says servicers will notify borrowers in the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan before the end of 2026. The notice process, rather than the date of an unrelated FSA email, controls your deadline.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Read the notice in your servicer account and note the date it was issued.
- From that servicer notice date, count the 90-day period provided to choose another eligible repayment plan.
- Use the official Repayment Calculator and online application to review plans available to you.
- Submit your choice through the official process and save the confirmation.
- If you do not choose a plan, the servicer will send a final 30-day notice. If you still do not act before that final deadline, the servicer will automatically enroll you in a fixed-payment plan, according to the current guidance.
Plan availability, deadlines, and legal requirements can change. Check your own servicer inbox and the current StudentAid.gov instructions for the exact date and the plans for which you qualify. Do not assume that another borrower’s notice date or plan options apply to you.

How to avoid unnecessary fees and scams
Paid enrollment is not required
Federal Student Aid says borrowers do not need to pay a company to apply for a federal repayment plan, request a federal consolidation, lower a payment, or check potential forgiveness eligibility. Your servicer can provide those services without an enrollment, subscription, maintenance, or success fee.
A fee request does not, by itself, establish that every business is fraudulent. It does mean you should ask why you are paying for a federal service that is available directly from the servicer and StudentAid.gov, and whether the company is asking you to sign documents you do not understand.
Protect your account credentials
Federal Student Aid states: “The U.S. Department of Education and our partners—including loan servicers—will never ask for your StudentAid.gov username and password.” Never give those credentials to a company, caller, text sender, or purported representative. A legitimate helper can explain a process without taking control of your federal account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWarning signs
- An unsolicited call or message claiming that immediate payment is required to prevent forgiveness from expiring.
- A demand for money before anyone will explain a federal plan or submit a form.
- A request for your StudentAid.gov username, password, or multifactor-authentication code.
- Pressure to sign a power of attorney, blank form, or document that changes your banking information without time to review it.
- Promises that forgiveness is guaranteed regardless of loan type, employment, payment history, or program rules.
- Contact information that does not match the servicer shown in your StudentAid.gov account.
If you already shared information or paid
- Change your StudentAid.gov password immediately and make sure the account email, telephone number, and mailing address are still correct.
- Contact your official servicer through the account Dashboard and explain what happened.
- Ask your bank or card issuer whether recurring or unauthorized payments can be stopped.
- Submit a complaint through the Federal Student Aid complaint process and report suspected fraud to the Federal Trade Commission or the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
- Keep copies of messages, receipts, contracts, payment records, and screenshots.
When a servicer does not resolve the problem
Start with a secure message or call and request a case number. State the specific correction you want, attach relevant records, and ask when you should expect a response. If the first response does not address the issue, ask for escalation and submit a written complaint through the federal process.
Continue making any payment you can according to the instructions in your account unless the servicer confirms a different arrangement. Do not stop payments solely because a third party says a dispute or forgiveness request is pending. If you cannot make the scheduled payment, contact the servicer immediately and ask what approved option can prevent the account from becoming delinquent.
A practical free-help checklist
- Sign in to StudentAid.gov directly.
- Check the Dashboard for each federal loan and its current servicer.
- Review notices in both the StudentAid.gov account and the servicer account.
- Ask the servicer to compare available repayment plans, including IDR.
- Use the official Repayment Calculator and application when a plan change is appropriate.
- Before choosing deferment or forbearance, ask about interest, total cost, end date, and program-credit consequences.
- Save applications, confirmations, correspondence, and case numbers.
- Never pay an unaffiliated company for a federal service the servicer provides free.
- Never share your StudentAid.gov password or authentication code.
- Recheck current guidance before acting on a SAVE notice or any other time-sensitive communication.
What free help cannot promise
Contacting a servicer does not guarantee loan forgiveness, a particular payment, approval for a deferment, or correction of every account problem. Federal programs have eligibility requirements, and some require qualifying payments, qualifying employment, specific loan types, or other conditions. Only your account records and the applicable program rules can determine whether your months or employment qualify.
Because repayment policies and plan availability can change, treat a general explanation as a starting point. Confirm the current rule, your personal deadline, and the effect on your loans with your servicer and the live StudentAid.gov instructions.
