The lender then applies its own price reference, loan-to-value (LTV) policy and applicable regulatory limits before giving you a written offer. You receive the money after accepting the interest, fees, repayment schedule and collateral-release conditions, while the lender stores the pledged gold until you repay as agreed.
Eligibility, documents, valuation and repayment vary by lender and product. A Federal Bank product, for example, publishes an age threshold of 18 years and tenures from three to 12 months for described schemes; that is an example, not a universal rule. Verify the current terms for the exact lender and borrower category before handing over jewellery.

What a gold loan is and when it can make sense
A gold loan is secured borrowing. You pledge gold jewellery, ornaments or eligible coins; the lender keeps the collateral and advances an amount linked to the gold content it accepts. When you repay the amount due under the contract, the lender releases the pledged items. If you do not meet the contract’s payment or renewal requirements, the agreement may allow the lender to begin a default and auction process.
The security can make this route different from an unsecured personal loan, but it does not make the borrowing risk-free. The jewellery may have family, cultural or sentimental value that is greater than its assessed metal value. Decide first whether you can service the loan on the stated dates and whether losing the pledged items after a prolonged default would be acceptable.
#1 Best Overall
Use a gold loan only after comparing the complete written cost and the release procedure. A low advertised interest rate can be outweighed by appraisal, processing, renewal or overdue charges, or by a repayment structure that requires a large final payment.
Check eligibility before visiting a lender
Age and borrower status
Every lender sets its own borrower criteria. Federal Bank’s published example says individuals aged 18 or older with qualifying gold ornaments may apply. Other lenders and products can set different limits, require a particular legal capacity, or apply separate rules to non-resident customers. Treat the age and customer-category rules as product terms to confirm, not as a definition of every gold loan.
Gold that the product accepts
Ask whether the lender accepts your specific form of collateral. Policies can distinguish jewellery, ornaments and coins, and may set purity or ownership conditions. A lender’s assayer will determine whether an item qualifies and how much of its weight is gold. Decorative stones, wax, solder, clasps and other non-gold components do not increase the eligible gold value.
Tenure and scheme eligibility
Tenure is tied to the scheme. Federal Bank describes three-to-12-month ranges across the schemes cited in its published material. A farming-focused product can also require evidence connected with land or activity; Federal Bank’s Kisan Gold checklist is an example. Do not assume that a tenure or special-purpose requirement applies to a different lender or product.
Documents to prepare
Carry originals where the lender asks to inspect them and a complete set of copies or digital scans if its application process permits. An indicative Federal Bank checklist includes:
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- Identity proof, such as a passport, voter ID, driving licence, PAN or Aadhaar.
- Address proof.
- Recent passport-size photographs.
Non-resident customers may have additional requirements. A scheme designed for agricultural borrowers may request land or activity evidence; Federal Bank lists this for its Kisan Gold product. The exact checklist can change by customer type, state, product and current KYC policy, so ask the chosen lender for its latest list before you travel.
Information to confirm on your documents
- Make sure the name and date-of-birth details are consistent across identity and address records.
- Check that your address proof is current and accepted for the branch or application channel.
- Ask whether PAN or another tax identifier is needed for the proposed amount and whether a non-resident applicant needs passport, visa or overseas-address evidence.
- If the gold is jointly owned or belongs to an estate, ask what ownership or authority documents the lender will require before accepting it.
Prepare the gold and your questions
Separate the items you may pledge and note each item’s description, hallmark or stated purity, approximate gross weight and any stones. These notes are for your own control; the lender’s documented assay and net-weight measurement govern the offer. Photograph the items before handing them over, including distinctive marks, and keep a copy of the inventory the lender gives you.

Decide the amount you actually need rather than asking for the maximum available. A smaller principal reduces interest and leaves more margin if the lender’s assay comes in below your estimate. Also decide whether you can make periodic interest payments, monthly instalments, or a single principal-and-interest payment at maturity.
Bring a written question list. Ask for the annual interest rate and calculation method, every one-time and recurring fee, the exact due dates, renewal rules, consequences of a missed payment, the notice and auction process, and the steps and expected timing for getting the gold back after full repayment.
How to apply: the process from appraisal to disbursal
- Choose the product and channel. Confirm that the lender accepts your type of gold, your borrower category and the tenure you need. Request the current KYC checklist and a schedule of charges.
- Submit the application and KYC documents. Complete the lender’s form accurately. The lender may verify identity, address and other eligibility information before or alongside the collateral assessment.
- Watch the weighing and assay. The assayer should identify the items, determine purity and separate gold from stones and other non-gold material. Ask the staff to show you the gross weight, deductions and resulting net gold weight, and make sure those figures appear in the collateral or appraisal record.
- Review the valuation and offer. The lender applies its price reference, purity conversion and LTV policy to the eligible gold. Check the proposed principal, interest method, fees, tenure and repayment dates against what you requested.
- Read the agreement before signing. Look specifically for renewal conditions, late or overdue charges, prepayment terms, insurance or storage provisions, default notices and the auction clause. Ask for explanations of any term you cannot calculate from the document.
- Receive the funds and records. Keep the sanctioned-loan document, appraisal or collateral receipt, fee schedule, repayment calendar and disbursal confirmation. These records should let you identify the pledged items and the amount required to close the account.
- Store payment evidence. Save every receipt, statement, electronic confirmation and communication about renewals or changes. Do not rely on a verbal promise about a due date or an extension.
How the lender calculates the gold value
Net gold content, not gross jewellery weight
The starting point is the metal that the lender can value, not the item’s total weight. Stones, wax, alloys and other non-gold parts are deducted. A heavy necklace with substantial stonework can therefore support less borrowing than a lighter piece made mostly of high-purity gold.
Rank #3
Purity conversion
Federal Bank’s described method accepts cited jewellery below 22 carat but at least 18 carat, then translates the eligible metal proportionately to a 22-carat equivalent. This illustrates why a 20-carat item is not valued as if all of its net weight were 22 carat. A different lender or product can publish another eligible range or calculation, so obtain the method in writing.

Reference price
For the product described by Federal Bank, the reference is the lower of the preceding 30-day average closing price for 22-carat gold or the prior-day closing price published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association. Using the lower of two references limits the price used for that product. It is not evidence that every lender uses the same publication, look-back period or “lower of” rule.
A practical calculation framework
You can check the logic of an offer with this sequence:
- Start with each item’s gross weight.
- Subtract the documented weight of stones, wax, clasps, solder and other non-gold material to obtain net gold weight.
- Apply the stated purity conversion to express that metal as the lender’s eligible reference purity.
- Multiply the converted weight by the lender’s stated reference price.
- Apply the permitted LTV or product percentage to arrive at the maximum principal before fees or other adjustments.
The lender’s assay is decisive. A jeweller’s estimate, household scale or home testing kit cannot replace the lender’s assessment or establish the amount its rules permit.
LTV limits and the regulatory context
Loan-to-value is the share of the lender’s recognised gold value that can become principal. A 75% figure is often associated with a Reserve Bank of India circular dated January 20, 2014 for scheduled commercial banks within that circular’s stated scope. That historical limit should not be presented as the complete current rule for every lender or product.

The Reserve Bank of India issued the Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025, on June 6, 2025. The surfaced direction text says that only intrinsic gold or silver value is counted and that consumer bullet-repayment loans have a maximum tenor of 12 months. The applicable provisions can differ by regulated lender category and product. Check the current official RBI directions and the lender’s agreement rather than applying one percentage or one tenor to every offer.
LTV also explains why the amount you receive can be lower than a jewellery shop’s retail price. Retail pricing can include workmanship, design, taxes and stones, while the secured loan is based on eligible metal value under the lender’s policy.
Compare offers on equivalent terms
Obtain written illustrations for the same principal and a comparable tenor. Use this checklist rather than comparing a headline rate alone.
| Comparison point | What to obtain in writing |
|---|---|
| Total cost | Annual interest rate, calculation method, processing fee, appraisal fee, renewal fee, overdue charge and any other mandatory charge. |
| Valuation | Purity accepted, net-weight deductions, reference price, price date or averaging period, and the resulting eligible value. |
| Amount and LTV | Principal offered, percentage applied, and any reason the requested amount was reduced. |
| Repayment | EMI, periodic-interest or lump-sum structure; amount and date of every payment; and whether principal is due at maturity. |
| Tenure and renewal | Initial term, renewal eligibility, notice period, documents, fees and whether a renewal changes the rate or principal. |
| Default handling | Grace period, overdue treatment, written notices, auction triggers and how any surplus or shortfall is handled under the contract. |
| Collateral release | Documents required after the final payment, branch or channel for collection, identity checks and the lender’s stated release timeline. |
Compare total rupee cost for an equivalent amount and term. A loan with a lower nominal rate can cost more if it requires frequent renewal or adds substantial appraisal and overdue charges.
Repayment structures and how to manage them
EMI repayment
An EMI structure combines principal and interest in scheduled instalments. Federal Bank advertises EMI as one option for its products. Ask for an amortisation or payment schedule showing how each instalment is allocated and whether any final amount remains.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Lump-sum or bullet repayment
A lump-sum structure generally requires the principal, accumulated interest or both at a stated maturity date. Federal Bank advertises lump-sum options, while the 2025 RBI direction text identifies a 12-month maximum tenor for consumer bullet-repayment loans. Confirm whether the offer is classified as a consumer bullet loan and whether the stated regulatory limit applies to your product.
Periodic interest with principal at maturity
Some schemes may require interest payments during the term and principal at the end. Do not assume that paying monthly interest reduces principal. The agreement should state exactly what each payment settles.
Set up a repayment control
- Put every due date in a calendar with an alert well before the deadline.
- Keep the amount for a lump-sum maturity payment in a separate, accessible account as soon as the loan is disbursed.
- After each payment, match the receipt to the account statement and outstanding balance.
- Contact the lender before a missed date if cash flow changes; ask what formal renewal, part-payment or restructuring options are available and get any approval in writing.
Redeeming the pledged gold
After the lender confirms that principal, interest and all contractually due charges are paid, follow its stated closure procedure. Bring the loan account details and accepted identity documents, and request a closure or no-dues confirmation. Check the returned items against the appraisal inventory, including the number of pieces, distinctive marks and any recorded stones or attachments, before leaving the branch or collection point.
If the lender uses a central vault or a different release branch, ask about that process when you sign, not on the day you expect the jewellery back. The agreement should identify the documents, channel and timing for release. Keep the closure confirmation and the final receipt with your original loan records.
What happens if you miss payment
A missed instalment or maturity date can trigger overdue charges, collection contact, loss of renewal eligibility or a formal default notice, depending on the agreement. Continued default can lead to auction of the collateral after the notices and steps specified in the contract. Because the gold is security, the lender may not need to pursue the same process used for an unsecured loan.
Read the notice and auction clauses before signing. They should explain how the lender communicates a default, the time allowed to cure it, how the auction is conducted and what happens to any amount left after dues and costs. If you receive a notice, contact the lender immediately, request the exact payoff figure and ask which remedies are still available. Keep copies of every notice and response.
Common mistakes and practical fixes
- Estimating the loan from gross weight. Fix: require the assayer to record deductions and net gold weight.
- Treating retail jewellery price as collateral value. Fix: compare the lender’s intrinsic-metal valuation and reference price, not the shop price.
- Assuming a 75% LTV cap is universal. Fix: identify the lender category, product and current RBI provisions that apply.
- Choosing a maturity payment without a funding plan. Fix: reserve the principal and expected interest before accepting a bullet structure.
- Focusing only on the interest rate. Fix: add processing, appraisal, renewal and overdue charges to the comparison.
- Leaving without a collateral record. Fix: keep the item inventory, assay details, loan agreement and every receipt.
- Relying on a verbal extension. Fix: obtain a written renewal or revised due date from an authorised lender channel.
- Pledging irreplaceable jewellery casually. Fix: weigh the emotional loss and auction risk against alternatives before borrowing.
A final decision checklist
- I have confirmed that the lender accepts my gold type and borrower category.
- I have the current identity, address, photograph and any category-specific documents.
- The lender has recorded purity, gross weight, deductions and net gold weight.
- I understand the reference price, purity conversion, LTV and principal offered.
- I know the annual interest rate, calculation method and every mandatory fee.
- The repayment dates and structure fit my cash flow, including any final principal payment.
- I understand renewal conditions, missed-payment consequences, notice periods and auction provisions.
- I know how and when the lender will release the gold after closure.
- I have received copies of the agreement, appraisal, payment schedule and receipts.
Bottom line
Getting a gold loan is straightforward only when the collateral record and repayment terms are clear. Verify lender-specific eligibility and documents, let the lender value net intrinsic gold content, and compare the complete cost and default treatment in writing. Current RBI rules must be checked for the relevant lender and product; the historic 2014 bank circular is not a substitute for the 2025 directions. Borrow an amount and choose a term that you can repay without risking jewellery you cannot afford to lose.
