If you see a charge you did not make, contact the card issuer immediately through the official app, the number on the back of the card, or an official statement. If your issuer offers a temporary lock, turn it on while you are contacting the issuer—but do not treat the lock as a fraud report or dispute. Ask the issuer to review the account, cancel the compromised card and issue a replacement when appropriate, and explain how to dispute every unauthorized transaction.
Quick reporting limits further use and helps preserve your legal protections. A card lock controls an existing payment card; a security freeze on your credit reports is a separate identity-theft measure that helps prevent someone from opening new accounts in your name.

What to do first when a credit-card charge looks fraudulent
Work through these actions in order. Do not wait to determine whether an unfamiliar transaction is merely a delayed or recurring payment before alerting the issuer; the issuer can help identify it while protecting the account.

Do not use a link in an unexpected text, email or social-media message, and do not rely on a number supplied by an unsolicited caller. Tell the representative that you see an unauthorized transaction or believe the card details were stolen.
- Activate the issuer’s temporary lock, if available. This can be a useful short-term control while the account is being reviewed, but it does not replace reporting the fraud.
- Ask whether the card should be canceled and replaced. A replacement normally has a different number, expiration date and security code. If the card information was exposed, a permanent replacement is generally safer than simply unlocking the old card.
- Identify and dispute every unauthorized charge. Give the transaction date, merchant name and amount. Ask how the issuer wants the dispute submitted and whether it requires written follow-up.
- Record the contact. Keep the date and time of each call, the representative’s name or identification number, confirmation numbers, copies of letters and screenshots of relevant transactions.
- Review the rest of the account. Look through recent transactions and statements for additional unfamiliar activity, including small “test” charges that may precede larger purchases.
The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance is direct: “If your credit, ATM, or debit card is lost or stolen, don’t wait to report it.” Visa similarly says that an unauthorized transaction should be reported to the financial institution immediately. Those instructions apply even if you have already used an in-app lock.

How a card lock or freeze works—and what it does not prove
A card lock is an issuer-controlled setting that temporarily restricts some activity on a particular card. The name, location and behavior vary by issuer. One app may call it “Lock card,” another “Freeze card” or “Turn card off.” Because there is no universal standard, the issuer must explain exactly what the control does for your account.
A lock is a temporary control, not a fraud claim
Tapping a lock button normally does not tell the issuer that a transaction is unauthorized, open a formal dispute or guarantee that a replacement card will be sent. Make a separate fraud report and ask for a case or confirmation number.
Transactions a lock may not stop
No single rule applies across issuers to recurring payments, digital-wallet transactions, transactions already authorized before the lock, refunds or delayed postings. Ask the issuer:

- Whether recurring subscriptions, automatic bill payments and other merchant-initiated charges continue.
- Whether a card stored in a digital wallet remains usable.
- Whether a transaction already approved can still post after the lock.
- How quickly the setting takes effect and how it can be removed.
A pending transaction may complete even after a lock, and a merchant may submit a charge later under rules that differ from an ordinary purchase. Only the issuer can explain the treatment for your card and account agreement.
When to leave the card locked
If you are checking whether a misplaced card is somewhere safe, a temporary lock can be useful. If you see an unauthorized charge or believe the number was copied, do not unlock the card merely because no new charge appears. Ask the issuer whether it recommends cancellation and replacement instead.
How to report and dispute an unauthorized charge
Give the issuer a complete transaction list
Before calling, note each questionable transaction’s posting date, amount, merchant descriptor and whether it is pending or posted. Include transactions that look related even if they are small. Do not wait for several statements to arrive before reporting a pattern.

Ask for the issuer’s required dispute method
Many issuers accept a dispute in the app or by phone and may request a written statement. Follow the issuer’s instructions exactly. If written follow-up is requested, send it promptly and retain a copy, delivery evidence and any attachments. The FTC advises prompt reporting and written follow-up; the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says credit-card providers generally investigate disputed charges within two billing cycles.
Keep a dispute file
- The account’s last four digits, not the full number in unsecured notes.
- Transaction dates, amounts and merchant descriptions.
- The date you first noticed the activity.
- Every call, message, letter, confirmation number and response.
- Copies of statements with the disputed items marked.
- Evidence that the physical card was in your possession, if relevant.
Continue checking statements while the investigation is open. A disputed charge can be removed temporarily and later restored, or a second unauthorized charge can appear after the first report.
Do not acknowledge a fraudulent purchase as yours
Describe facts accurately. If you do not recognize a merchant, say that you did not authorize the transaction and ask the issuer to identify the merchant. Do not guess who made the purchase or claim the card was stolen if only the account number may have been exposed.
Credit-card liability: why fast reporting matters
U.S. consumer protections depend on what happened—whether the physical card was lost, whether only the account number was stolen, and when you notified the issuer. Review your cardholder agreement and report promptly rather than relying on a general limit.
| Situation | General rule described by the CFPB | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Lost or stolen card reported before it is used | The cardholder cannot be held responsible for unauthorized charges. | Report the loss immediately and ask whether the card must be canceled and replaced. |
| Unauthorized use before a lost or stolen card is reported | Maximum liability is generally $50 under the circumstances described by the CFPB. | Notify the issuer as soon as the loss or unauthorized use is discovered. |
| Only the account number is stolen; the physical card was not lost or stolen | The person generally has no liability for unauthorized use. | Dispute each charge and follow the issuer’s written-dispute process. |
| Most Visa credit and debit cards | Visa’s Zero Liability Policy generally applies, subject to exceptions and transaction conditions. | Notify the issuing institution immediately; the issuer determines account-specific coverage. |
Visa lists exceptions to its Zero Liability Policy, including certain commercial and anonymous prepaid cards and transactions not processed by Visa. Do not assume that every card, transaction type or account receives identical treatment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe $50 figure is a general CFPB guidepost, not a reason to delay. The applicable agreement, facts and law control the outcome.

Card lock versus a credit-report security freeze
These controls address different risks:
| Control | What it addresses | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer card lock or freeze | Temporary control over transactions on an existing payment card. | Use the issuer’s app if available, then separately report fraud and dispute charges. |
| Credit-report security freeze | Restricts prospective creditors’ access to a credit report, helping prevent new accounts from being opened in your name. | Consider it when the incident suggests broader identity theft or attempted new-account fraud. |
| Fraud alert on credit reports | Signals to prospective creditors that they should take additional steps to verify identity. | Consider it with other identity-theft measures when appropriate. |
A credit-report freeze does not stop purchases on an existing credit card. Conversely, locking your card does not stop someone from applying for a new account using your identity.
When the incident may be broader identity theft
A single unfamiliar card charge may be limited to one account. Take wider steps if you find unfamiliar bank accounts, loans, utility accounts, address changes, tax records or other evidence that someone is using your identity.
- Close affected accounts. Ask each financial institution for its fraud department and follow its instructions.
- Contact the institutions involved. Tell them which accounts or applications are not yours and ask how to block further activity.
- Report identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov. The CFPB recommends this step for identity-theft situations.
- Consider fraud alerts or security freezes on your credit reports. These are separate from the card issuer’s account controls.
- Review credit reports and statements regularly. Look for accounts, inquiries and addresses you do not recognize.
If only one card number appears compromised, do not assume that a credit-report freeze is required; ask the issuer whether the facts indicate broader exposure.

Checking automatic payments, wallets and replacement-card details
Automatic payments
When a replacement card has a new number, update legitimate subscriptions, utilities, memberships and other automatic payments linked to the old card. Make a list before the old card is canceled if you can do so safely. Do not update a merchant you do not recognize until the issuer confirms whether it is legitimate.
Digital wallets
Ask the issuer whether the old card’s digital-wallet token is disabled automatically or must be removed separately. The lock behavior for wallet transactions is issuer-specific, so confirm it rather than assuming that locking the physical card blocks every wallet payment.
Pending and recurring transactions
Ask which pending charges can still settle and whether recurring charges continue after cancellation. A replacement card may not stop a merchant that has a separate payment authorization or updated card-on-file details; the issuer can explain what action is available for a particular merchant.

Safely destroying the old card
After the issuer confirms that the old card is canceled, cut through the chip, magnetic stripe and printed number before disposal. Shred statements that contain account information. These steps do not replace issuer reporting, but they reduce the chance that discarded information will be reused.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How to avoid scams while trying to stop fraud
Fraudsters sometimes pose as a card company’s “security department.” They may pressure you to reveal a one-time code, full card number, password or online-banking credentials, or sell unnecessary “loss protection.” The FTC says there is no need to pay for the loss-protection insurance described in its consumer guidance.
- End an unexpected call and dial the number on the card yourself.
- Open the issuer’s app by typing its address or using the previously installed app, not an unsolicited link.
- Never share a one-time passcode with a caller who contacted you first.
- Do not move money to a “safe” account because someone says your card is under attack.
- Do not install remote-access software at an unknown caller’s request.
- Ask the issuer to confirm whether a message, phone number or payment request is genuine.
An issuer may ask you to verify information, but you control the channel by independently contacting it.
A practical documentation checklist
Create a simple timeline as soon as you notice the problem. Include:
- When and where you first saw the charge.
- When you locked the card, if you used that feature.
- When you called or messaged the issuer and which official channel you used.
- Whether the physical card was lost, stolen or still in your possession.
- Which charges you disputed and the case numbers.
- Whether the issuer canceled the card and the expected replacement method.
- Which legitimate automatic payments need to be moved to the replacement card.
- Any related identity-theft indicators and reports made to other institutions.
Store records securely. Do not email or text the full card number to yourself or anyone else.
Common mistakes and the safer alternative
Only locking the card
Why it fails: A lock may not file a dispute or cover every transaction type. Safer alternative: Lock it if useful, then contact the issuer and report each unauthorized charge.

Waiting for a second charge
Why it fails: Delay can allow additional use and complicate the timeline. Safer alternative: Report the first unauthorized transaction promptly and let the issuer investigate.
Calling a number in a text message
Why it fails: The message may be a phishing attempt. Safer alternative: Use the number on the card, an official statement or the issuer’s independently opened app.
Assuming a credit freeze locks the card
Why it fails: A credit-report freeze concerns new-account applications, not purchases on an existing account. Safer alternative: Contact the card issuer for the existing account and use credit-report protections only when broader identity theft is a concern.
Failing to update legitimate bills
Why it fails: A replacement number can cause valid payments to fail. Safer alternative: Make a list of legitimate card-on-file merchants and update them after the replacement arrives.
Questions to ask the issuer
- Is the card currently locked, and when does the setting take effect?
- Does the lock block online, in-person, recurring and digital-wallet transactions?
- Can a pending or previously authorized transaction still post?
- Should the card be canceled and replaced because the number may be compromised?
- Which transactions are being treated as unauthorized?
- How must I submit the dispute, and is written follow-up required?
- What is the dispute case number and expected investigation process?
- Will the replacement have a new number, and how will it affect automatic payments?
- Do I need to remove the old card from a digital wallet?
- Does the account show signs of identity theft beyond this card?
What happens after you report the problem
The issuer may ask questions about your possession and use of the card, place a temporary credit while investigating, request documents or issue a replacement. Keep monitoring statements during that process. The CFPB says providers generally investigate disputed credit-card charges within two billing cycles, but the issuer’s notices and your cardholder agreement govern the specific case.
If the issuer denies a dispute, read the explanation, compare it with the transaction facts and agreement, and ask what additional documentation or appeal process is available. Continue retaining every communication. If the matter involves broader identity theft, follow the separate reports and account-closing steps described above.
Bottom line for a suspected fraudulent charge
Use an issuer lock as a temporary precaution, but the decisive steps are immediate issuer contact, a formal report of the suspected fraud, a dispute for each unauthorized transaction and careful monitoring afterward. Ask for cancellation and replacement when card details may be compromised. A credit-report security freeze can help with new-account identity theft, but it cannot stop spending on the existing card.
