If a Windows PC feels sluggish, first identify which programs are using memory, close what you do not need, reduce unnecessary programs that launch at sign-in, and restart when necessary. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then use its Processes, Performance, and Startup apps tabs. These steps can reduce avoidable memory use, but they cannot create additional physical RAM or guarantee a particular speed increase.
This procedure applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s complete performance guidance is available in Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.

What “freeing up RAM” can and cannot do
Random-access memory (RAM) is the short-term workspace Windows and running programs use. When you open a browser, document editor, game, meeting app, or utility, that software uses part of the available memory. Closing an application that you are finished with allows Windows to stop maintaining that application’s active working data and makes memory available for other work.
Software housekeeping has a firm limit: it does not add physical memory to the computer. If the PC has too little RAM for the programs you routinely run, closing apps may provide temporary relief, but the underlying capacity remains unchanged. Microsoft cautions that older computers with outdated hardware may not show a significant improvement from performance troubleshooting. Do not expect a fixed number of gigabytes to be recovered or a guaranteed speed gain from any of the steps below.

RAM and storage are different resources. RAM affects the programs that are running now. Storage is the long-term space on the system drive used for Windows, applications, and files. Removing temporary files can recover storage space, but it is not a direct RAM-clearing technique.
The safest sequence to try first
- Observe memory use in Task Manager. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. On Processes, inspect the Memory column and identify applications you recognize but are not using.
- Close unneeded applications. Select an application you have finished with and choose the option to end or close it. Save work first. Do not terminate unfamiliar Windows processes merely because they appear in the list.
- Check the overall picture. Open Performance in Task Manager and review memory alongside CPU and disk activity. This helps distinguish a memory-heavy workload from a problem dominated by another resource.
- Review programs that launch automatically. Open the Startup apps tab and investigate entries you recognize but do not need immediately after sign-in.
- Reduce unnecessary background activity where Windows provides a control for that app. The exact route varies by Windows release and by the application. Change only settings you understand.
- Close unused browser tabs and restart if the PC remains sluggish. Reopen only the programs and tabs required for the next task.
Microsoft documents this monitoring-and-cleanup approach for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its performance guidance.
Use Task Manager to find the immediate cause
Processes: locate active memory users
Task Manager’s Processes tab is the most useful starting point when the computer is slow right now. Look at the memory figures for applications you recognize: a browser with many tabs, a video editor, a large spreadsheet, a game, or a meeting application may be using substantially more memory than a small utility.
- Save any unsaved work before closing an application.
- Close the entire application normally when possible, rather than ending a process abruptly.
- Investigate one or two obvious, unused applications first so you can tell whether responsiveness changes.
- Leave unfamiliar system processes alone. A process name that is unfamiliar to you is not automatically unnecessary.
Task Manager is an observation tool as well as a closing tool. If closing a known application does not change the symptoms, reopen it only if you need it and continue checking other causes rather than repeatedly ending random processes.
Performance: separate memory pressure from other bottlenecks
Select Performance in Task Manager to see resource activity over time. Compare memory activity with CPU and disk activity while the slowdown occurs. A PC that is busy with a CPU-heavy task or disk activity may not be suffering primarily from a lack of available RAM. This distinction prevents you from deleting files or disabling programs when the active problem is elsewhere.

Use the view as a pattern check, not as a promise of a particular threshold. The Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal percentage at which every Windows PC becomes slow, because the result depends on the computer’s hardware and the software running on it.
Close applications and browser tabs you are not using
Every open program is a candidate for review. Close document editors, launchers, media tools, chat clients, and other applications after you finish with them. In a browser, close tabs that are no longer needed, especially pages running active web applications or media.

Stop unnecessary startup programs
Startup programs run automatically when you sign in. A program that launches at every sign-in can consume memory before you open anything yourself. Windows 10 and Windows 11 provide two documented routes for managing them:
| Route | What it provides | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Settings > Apps > Startup | A list of applications with startup controls. | Turn off a recognized app that you do not need at sign-in. |
| Task Manager > Startup apps | Startup controls plus a view of each app’s startup impact. | Prioritize which recognized entries to investigate first. |
Microsoft’s step-by-step documentation for both operating systems is in Configure Startup applications in Windows. Menu names can vary slightly by Windows release.

How to choose an entry
- Open either Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Read the application name and publisher information. Disable only software you recognize.
- Ask whether you need the program ready immediately after sign-in. If you use it only occasionally, automatic launch may be unnecessary.
- Use the Startup impact information in Task Manager to help prioritize investigation; it is a prioritization aid, not a measurement of how much RAM the app will always consume.
- Leave security software, hardware utilities, accessibility tools, and other entries you rely on enabled unless you understand the consequences of changing them.
- After changing a startup setting, restart or sign out and sign back in, then observe whether startup and normal use improve.
Disabling startup does not uninstall the program. It changes whether Windows launches it automatically; you can still open it manually when needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLimit background activity selectively
Some applications can continue activity when you are not actively using their windows. Microsoft identifies background apps as one source of activity that can affect performance and describes controls for applications that expose background-permission settings.
There is no single background switch that applies identically to every program. The available control depends on your Windows version and on the app itself. Where Windows exposes a background-permission setting for a particular app, review it and stop unnecessary background activity only when you understand what the app will lose—for example, timely updates or notifications.
- Use the app’s documented Windows settings rather than ending unfamiliar processes in Task Manager.
- Keep background activity enabled for functions you depend on, such as notifications or synchronization.
- Change one app at a time, then observe whether the unwanted activity or slowdown changes.
Microsoft’s general performance article explains the background-app approach and its limits: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.
Restart when closing programs is not enough
If the PC remains sluggish after you close unneeded applications and tabs, restart Windows. A restart closes the current session and reloads Windows and the programs that are configured to start. Before restarting, save documents, finish or pause transfers, and close applications that may be recording or presenting.

After signing back in, open only what you need and watch Task Manager again. If the computer is responsive at first but slows after a particular application or workload is opened, that pattern is more useful than repeatedly restarting without identifying the trigger.
Storage Sense solves a different problem
Use Storage Sense when the issue is low disk space, not when you simply want to clear RAM. Storage Sense works on the system drive and can remove selected temporary files. Depending on your settings, it may also clean items in the Recycle Bin and Downloads folder. Microsoft says Downloads and cloud content are not handled unless you configure those choices.
Before allowing cleanup, inspect what Windows is set to delete. A file removed from Downloads or the Recycle Bin may be difficult to recover. Storage Sense settings and defaults can vary, so treat the preview and selected categories as a confirmation step.
Storage Sense can make room on the drive, but the cleanup itself is not a direct RAM-recovery step. Microsoft’s storage documentation is available at Manage drive space with Storage Sense.

Choose the action that matches the symptom
| What you observe | First action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A program you are finished with is using memory | Close that application from its normal interface, then recheck Processes. | It removes an active workload without changing Windows configuration. |
| The PC slows after many browser tabs or web apps are opened | Close unneeded tabs and applications. | Those open workloads are the immediate memory users. |
| The PC is busy as soon as you sign in | Review Startup apps and disable recognized, nonessential entries. | It reduces recurring activity at sign-in. |
| An app appears to keep working when you are not using it | Review that app’s available background-permission setting. | Background controls are app- and version-dependent. |
| Windows reports little free drive space | Review Storage Sense or Windows cleanup recommendations. | This addresses storage capacity, not RAM. |
| Performance remains poor after closing apps and restarting | Use Task Manager’s Performance view to compare memory, CPU, and disk activity while the slowdown occurs. | The limiting resource may not be RAM. |
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not confuse disk cleanup with RAM cleanup
Deleting temporary files or moving personal files can increase available storage. It does not give running applications more physical RAM. Use Storage Sense for a drive-space problem and Task Manager for an active-memory investigation.

Do not disable everything that starts with Windows
Startup entries can include tools you depend on for security, hardware features, accessibility, synchronization, or notifications. Disable only entries you recognize and do not need at sign-in. If you are unsure what an entry does, leave it enabled and investigate through the application’s own documentation rather than guessing.
Do not end unfamiliar system processes
Task Manager lists Windows components as well as ordinary applications. Ending an unfamiliar process can close work or affect system functions without solving the original slowdown. Restrict closing actions to applications you recognize and are not using.
Do not expect “RAM cleaner” software to be necessary
The documented Windows controls already provide the relevant actions for this task: observe resource use, close unused programs, manage startup and available background permissions, and restart. The official guidance does not establish a need for third-party RAM-cleaning software or a guaranteed result from it.

- When the PC slows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and inspect Processes.
- Close recognized applications and browser tabs you no longer need, after saving work.
- Check Performance to see whether memory, CPU, or disk activity best matches the symptom.
- Review Startup apps after installing software or noticing slow sign-in.
- Disable only recognized startup entries that do not need to launch automatically.
- Review background-permission controls only where Windows and the app provide them.
- Restart if the PC remains sluggish, then reopen only the required workload.
- Use Storage Sense separately when the problem is low system-drive space, and review deletion settings first.
When these steps are not enough
If the same workload repeatedly overwhelms the computer after you have closed unnecessary programs, reduced avoidable startup activity, and restarted, software housekeeping may have reached its limit. The steps above can remove avoidable activity; they cannot increase the machine’s installed RAM. Microsoft notes that older hardware may not show a significant improvement from performance troubleshooting, so persistent limitations may require changing the workload or eventually considering a hardware change—although installing more memory is outside this guide’s scope.
Keep a simple record of what was open when the slowdown occurred and what Task Manager showed for memory, CPU, and disk. That evidence helps you decide whether the next investigation should focus on a particular application, recurring startup activity, storage capacity, or an aging computer rather than repeating random cleanup.
