Windows 11 on Arm can run both x86 and x64 user-mode applications through Microsoft’s Prism emulator, but it cannot emulate kernel-mode drivers. An app may therefore open normally while its printer, plug-in, Explorer menu, anti-cheat module, accessibility tool, or hardware feature fails because that component needs an Arm64 build. The most reliable performance solution is a native Arm64 version; the practical compatibility path is to update Windows and the app, replace incompatible drivers or integrations, select the correct graphics API, and then adjust Prism settings per application.
Windows 11 24H2 introduced Prism and improves translation efficiency and CPU use compared with earlier Windows on Arm releases. Windows 10 on Arm emulates x86 only, so an x64 application requires Windows 11 with Prism. No official source establishes a universal speed multiplier or compatibility percentage: results depend on the exact app, build, workload, drivers, and peripherals.

What Windows on Arm can and cannot run
Application architecture is only the first layer of compatibility. The operating system can translate instructions executed in user mode, while code that runs in the kernel or is injected into system processes must be compiled for Arm64.
| Application or component | Windows on Arm behavior | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Native Arm64 application | Runs directly on the processor with the best efficiency and usually the fewest compatibility variables. | Use it when the publisher offers one. |
| x86 application | Windows 11 translates it through Prism; Windows 10 on Arm supports x86 emulation but not x64 emulation. | Use current Windows 11 and test the app’s integrations. |
| x64 application | Supported through Prism on Windows 11 24H2 and later. | Install current updates and verify vendor support. |
| Arm64EC application | Lets a publisher port selected modules to Arm64 while retaining compatible x64 components. | Install the publisher’s Arm64EC release if available. |
| Kernel driver or kernel-mode plug-in | Not translated by Prism. | Obtain an Arm64 driver or replace the hardware or software. |
| Shell extension, injected DLL, or other system-process integration | Must match the architecture of the Windows process it enters. | Install an Arm64 build or disable/remove the integration. |
Drivers commonly account for failures that look like application bugs. Device and printer drivers, user-mode driver framework (UMDF) components, antivirus and virtualization drivers, assistive-technology modules, and anti-cheat drivers all need Arm64 versions. Emulation cannot translate their kernel-mode portions.

Why an x86 app can be slow even when it works
Prism operates as a software translator. It just-in-time compiles blocks of x86 instructions into Arm64 instructions and applies optimizations to the generated code. Translation adds work, particularly during first launch, while a large application compiles frequently used code, or when its workload repeatedly generates new code. Microsoft also caches translated code, so subsequent runs normally avoid some of the initial translation cost.
Native Arm64 code avoids that translation layer and can use the processor’s Arm instructions directly. An Arm64EC build can deliver many of the same benefits incrementally: a publisher can port performance-sensitive modules while retaining x64 modules that have not yet been converted. If neither native nor Arm64EC software exists, a correctly configured x86 or x64 installation can still be usable, but performance is workload-specific. Do not rely on a generic percentage improvement or assume that an app that launches will match native speed.
First diagnosis: identify the exact failing layer
1. Record Windows and application versions
Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition, version, and OS build. Confirm whether the machine is running Windows 11 24H2 or later, where Prism supports x86 and x64 emulation. On Windows 10 Arm, an x64 program will not be supported by the operating system’s x86-only emulation.
Recommended Free Tools
Record the application’s full version and the installer architecture. A publisher may provide separate x86, x64, Arm64, or Arm64EC packages. If an Arm64 package exists, install it rather than tuning the emulated package.

2. Reproduce with the smallest workload
Write down whether the symptom is a crash at launch, a slow first start, slow repeated use, a graphics error, a missing device, a failed print job, a missing shell menu, or an instability that appears only with a plug-in. Test the application without optional extensions and with the exact peripheral or document that triggers the problem. This distinction prevents a missing driver from being mistaken for a Prism performance issue.
3. Check for architecture-specific dependencies
List every component that starts with the app or integrates with Windows: printer software, scanners, VPN or security agents, virtualization tools, cloud-storage overlays, Explorer context-menu handlers, input method editors, accessibility tools, plug-ins, and anti-cheat modules. Ask each vendor for an Arm64 build. A 32-bit or 64-bit user-mode application can be emulated while one incompatible injected DLL prevents the host process from loading.
Step-by-step repair procedure
- Confirm the platform and architecture. Verify Windows 11 24H2 or later for x64 emulation, determine whether the app is x86, x64, Arm64, or Arm64EC, and choose a native Arm64 release when the publisher supplies one.
- Install Windows and application updates. Prism behavior and compatibility change through Windows servicing. Install current Windows updates and the vendor’s latest application, plug-in, and runtime updates. Record the exact Windows build and app version before contacting support so the vendor can reproduce the same combination.
- Update or replace drivers first. Visit the device, printer, security, virtualization, assistive-technology, and anti-cheat vendors’ support pages and look specifically for Arm64 packages. If no Arm64 driver exists, the dependent feature may remain unavailable even though the main executable opens. Do not expect an x86 or x64 kernel driver to be translated.
- Temporarily remove integrations. Disable optional plug-ins, Explorer context-menu handlers, cloud-storage overlays, input method components, and assistive technologies, then retest. Re-enable them one at a time after the base application is stable. An integration that injects a DLL into an Arm64 Windows process must provide a compatible architecture.
- Select a supported graphics path. If the application offers DirectX and OpenGL choices, use its DirectX mode when OpenGL newer than 1.1 or hardware-accelerated OpenGL is required. Microsoft documents x86 applications using DirectX 9, 10, 11, or 12 as supported on Arm. A graphics failure limited to an OpenGL path is not necessarily fixed by changing Prism’s CPU settings.
- Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Search Windows for Program Compatibility Troubleshooter, select the executable, and let Windows test recommended settings before changing advanced emulation controls. Apply a recommendation only if it fixes the specific symptom, and keep a note of the original setting.
- Open the per-app Prism controls. Right-click the application executable, choose Properties > Compatibility > Change emulation settings, and leave the profile at Default for the first test. Do not change several controls together; otherwise you cannot identify which change helped or hurt.
- Test stricter profiles when necessary. If Default still crashes or behaves incorrectly, test Safe, then Strict, and finally Very strict, one at a time. These profiles can improve compatibility for code that makes assumptions about instruction behavior, but they generally trade away performance and can introduce new instability. Revert immediately when a profile worsens the result.
- Use advanced controls only for a matching symptom. Test hybrid-execution behavior when an x86 application conflicts with CHPE; test application-cache behavior when launch or repeat-run anomalies point to translated-code caching; enable strict self-modifying-code support for software that generates code at runtime; and test disabling RWX or floating-point optimizations only when diagnostics implicate those paths. Change one control, reproduce the failure, and document the result.
- Verify the complete workload. After a fix, restart Windows and test the normal document, plug-in, printer, graphics scene, or game workload. Check sleep/wake, multiple launches, and the exact peripheral. Then compare the result with the vendor’s support matrix and Microsoft’s evolving Works on WoA database before deploying to other machines.
How to choose Prism settings without making performance worse
Prism settings are per application because a profile that helps one program can harm another. Microsoft describes the trade-off plainly: changing emulation settings can increase compatibility, generally at the cost of performance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Setting or profile | When to try it | Expected trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Default | Always the starting point for a new installation. | Best general balance; preserves normal optimizations. |
| Safe | When Default produces a reproducible compatibility fault. | More conservative execution, potentially lower speed. |
| Strict | When Safe does not resolve the fault and the app is sensitive to translated execution behavior. | Further compatibility safeguards; greater performance cost is possible. |
| Very strict | Last profile test before seeking a vendor fix. | Most conservative profile and the highest likelihood of a speed penalty. |
| Disable translated-code cache | Only to diagnose a launch or repeat-run cache anomaly. | Forces recompilation at runtime and normally makes performance worse. |
| Strict self-modifying-code support | Software generates or changes executable code while running. | May fix correctness at a cost to throughput. |
| Hybrid execution control | An x86 app shows a conflict associated with CHPE. | Can remove a compatibility conflict but may reduce optimization. |
| RWX or floating-point optimization controls | Only when a controlled test points to the corresponding code path. | Potential compatibility gain with possible performance loss. |
After each change, use the same reproduction steps and capture startup time, the action that failed, crash frequency, and CPU behavior. If the symptom changes but does not disappear, return to the prior profile and ask the publisher for an Arm64, Arm64EC, or patched emulated build.

Graphics-specific failures
Graphics APIs are a frequent source of misleading compatibility reports. Microsoft documents x86 applications using DirectX 9 through DirectX 12 as working on Arm. OpenGL support has a limitation: applications requiring OpenGL above version 1.1 or hardware-accelerated OpenGL may not work through the documented path.
Use the application’s DirectX option
Look in the program’s graphics, renderer, or startup options for DirectX 9, 10, 11, or 12. Select the DirectX renderer, restart the program, and test the same scene or document. If the application has no DirectX option and requires newer or hardware-accelerated OpenGL, Prism settings are unlikely to supply the missing API capability; seek a vendor update or an alternative workflow.
Separate rendering from driver problems
A DirectX application can still fail if the display driver is outdated or lacks an Arm64 build. Update the graphics driver supplied for the Windows on Arm device, then retest with optional overlays and plug-ins disabled. A crash that disappears only after removing an overlay points to that injected component rather than to the application’s x86 instructions.

Common symptoms and the correct fix
The application opens, but printing or scanning fails
The user-mode interface may be emulated while the printer, scanner, or UMDF component relies on an incompatible driver. Install the manufacturer’s Arm64 driver and matching utility. If none exists, use a device with Arm64 support or a documented network workflow that does not require the incompatible local driver. Changing Prism from Default to Very strict cannot translate a kernel driver.

An Explorer context menu or cloud overlay is missing
Shell handlers and overlays load inside Windows processes, so their DLL architecture must match the host process. Install an Arm64 shell extension or disable the old handler. Reinstalling the x86 application alone does not convert an injected shell DLL.
A game starts but its anti-cheat system blocks it
Anti-cheat drivers commonly use kernel-mode code. Confirm that the game publisher and anti-cheat vendor support Windows on Arm and provide Arm64 components. If support is absent, the game may remain blocked regardless of Prism profile.
The first launch is slow, but later launches improve
That pattern is consistent with just-in-time translation and the translated-code cache. Leave caching enabled unless you are specifically diagnosing a cache-related anomaly. Disabling the cache forces recompilation and is normally a performance regression.
The program crashes only after a plug-in is enabled
Start the host without plug-ins, then add them individually. Obtain Arm64 or Arm64EC versions of the failing plug-in and its runtime. A plug-in that injects x86 or x64 code into an Arm64 process can fail even when the host application itself is emulated successfully.

Native Arm64, Arm64EC, and emulation: a decision guide
| Choice | Best use | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Native Arm64 | Daily workloads, long-running tasks, heavy graphics, and battery-sensitive mobile use. | Must exist for the exact application and all required plug-ins and drivers. |
| Arm64EC | Large applications whose publisher is porting modules gradually. | Unported dependencies can still impose compatibility requirements. |
| x86 through Prism | Established applications with no native build and user-mode dependencies. | Translation overhead and architecture-specific integrations can limit speed or functionality. |
| x64 through Prism | Windows 11 24H2 or later when the publisher supplies only x64. | Not available through Windows 10 Arm’s x86-only emulation; still cannot cover kernel drivers. |
For a business or household deployment, choose the architecture only after checking every required peripheral and plug-in. A native application paired with an unsupported printer driver is not a complete solution, while an emulated application with fully supported Arm64 peripherals may be adequate.
When troubleshooting cannot solve the problem
Stop changing Prism settings when the evidence points to a missing architecture rather than translated user-mode instructions. The durable fixes are an Arm64 driver, an Arm64 shell or plug-in component, an Arm64 or Arm64EC application release, a vendor patch that removes unsupported dynamic code, or different hardware. Ask the vendor to confirm support for the exact Windows build, application version, processor family, peripheral model, graphics API, and workload.
Do not treat a successful launch as proof of full compatibility. Test printing, scanning, file associations, Explorer menus, authentication, sleep and resume, graphics acceleration, plug-ins, updates, and any security or anti-cheat feature that the real user needs.
Deployment checklist
- Windows 11 24H2 or later is installed when an x64 application is required.
- The application’s architecture and exact version are recorded.
- A native Arm64 or Arm64EC build has been selected whenever available.
- Every device, printer, security, virtualization, accessibility, and anti-cheat driver has Arm64 support.
- Shell extensions, overlays, IMEs, and plug-ins have matching architecture builds.
- The application uses DirectX when its OpenGL requirement exceeds the supported path.
- Program Compatibility Troubleshooter has been tried before advanced Prism changes.
- Prism remains at Default unless a controlled test justifies Safe, Strict, Very strict, or an advanced option.
- Translated-code caching remains enabled for normal use.
- The exact peripheral and workload pass repeated tests after restart and sleep/wake.
- The vendor support matrix and Microsoft’s Works on WoA information have been checked before wider deployment.
The Bottom Line
Fix x86 compatibility on Windows on Arm from the outside in: use a native Arm64 build when possible, update Windows and every dependency, replace incompatible drivers and injected components, select DirectX for affected graphics workloads, and adjust Prism one setting at a time. If the failing code is kernel-mode or lacks an Arm64 component, emulation cannot provide a software-only fix.
