Most GPU driver failures are repaired by following the right order: identify whether the problem is an installation conflict or a persistent hardware fault, let Windows Update finish any background driver transaction, reinstall the exact NVIDIA or AMD package with its clean-install option, and only then remove remnants in Safe Mode. A black screen during driver removal can be normal; a no-signal display that remains after reboot needs separate hardware and Windows troubleshooting.
First, identify what actually failed
“The driver crashed” can describe several different events. The repair depends on which one you have.

- Installation-time black screen: the display goes dark while an installer is changing the active driver, then returns after the installation or a reboot.
- Desktop crash or timeout: Windows recovers the display, an application closes, or the screen flickers while using the GPU.
- Persistent no signal: the monitor stays blank after reboot, including before the Windows sign-in screen. This is not automatically a driver problem.
- Installer failure: setup stops with an error, rolls back, or reports that another installation is in progress.
- Device Manager Code 43: Windows reports that the graphics device is not working properly.
Before changing anything, record the GPU model, Windows edition and version, installed driver version, the exact installer message, and whether the problem began after a Windows or driver update. Note whether the display returns after a normal reboot. This information determines whether to retry the package, roll back, clean the driver store, or inspect power and hardware.

On a fresh Windows installation, or after the first boot following an update, Windows can silently download and install a display driver in the background. NVIDIA Support says this transaction may take about 5–10 minutes and recommends leaving Windows alone for at least 15 minutes before starting a manual installation. Starting setup while that transaction is active can make the installer fail or leave you with the wrong package.

- Boot into Windows and wait at least 15 minutes if this is the first boot after installation or a major update.
- Restart the computer once the wait is complete.
- Download the exact package for your GPU and Windows version from the GPU manufacturer’s official support site. Save it locally before removing the existing driver.
- Run the vendor installer again. Do not repeatedly start the same installer while Windows is still applying updates.
If the installer succeeds but the driver is replaced after the next reboot, Windows Update may have reverted it. Treat that as an update conflict rather than as proof that the GPU is defective.
Step 2: Use the vendor’s built-in clean-install controls
NVIDIA: Custom installation
In NVIDIA setup, choose Custom (Advanced), then select Perform a clean installation. NVIDIA’s support guidance specifically recommends this path after Windows has finished its background driver installation. A clean installation resets NVIDIA driver settings and replaces the package’s installed components; it does not test the GPU’s power delivery, PCIe connection, temperature, or physical condition.
AMD: Clean Install or Factory Reset
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition exposes a Clean Install option in supported installers, and AMD also documents a Factory Reset workflow. Use the option offered by the package you downloaded. As with NVIDIA’s clean install, this is software remediation, not a hardware diagnostic.

AMD installer errors: what each code means
AMD publishes named failure modes that are more useful than simply rerunning the installer.

Error 1603 is a category, not a diagnosis. If it persists after updates and a clean retry, check system-file integrity and services instead of assuming the graphics card has failed.
Step 3: Escalate to a complete driver cleanup only when needed
Use a full cleanup when the normal clean-install option fails, when you are switching between vendors, when an earlier package left remnants, or when the installer repeatedly rolls back. AMD provides its own Cleanup Utility and Factory Reset paths. Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a cross-vendor third-party option for removing residual display-driver files.
Prepare before entering Safe Mode
- Download the exact OEM driver package first and keep it on the PC or on removable storage.
- Save any work and close applications.
- Disconnect the internet before cleanup so Windows Update cannot immediately install a different display driver. Disconnect Ethernet or disable Wi-Fi.
- If you use BitLocker or another full-disk security feature, make sure you can unlock the system after a restart.
DDU sequence
- Open Windows Recovery options and boot into Safe Mode.
- Run DDU and choose the display-driver cleanup-and-restart action for the vendor you are removing.
- Allow the computer to reboot. The screen may flicker or briefly turn black while the active driver is removed; that short interruption is expected.
- Remain offline after the reboot and run the driver package you prepared before cleanup.
- Restart normally, confirm the driver version in Device Manager or the vendor control panel, and reconnect the internet only after installation is complete.
Do not interpret the temporary black screen during removal as the same problem as a no-signal condition that continues after reboot. If the monitor remains blank, power the computer off and test the display connection, another output, or another monitor before repeating cleanup.

When AMD’s own utility is preferable
If you are staying with AMD and the installer offers a supported Cleanup Utility or Factory Reset, that first-party route is easier to document and troubleshoot with AMD Support. DDU is useful when remnants remain or when changing vendors, but it adds another tool and another opportunity to remove the wrong package. Always verify the selected vendor and GPU before confirming cleanup.
Step 4: Reinstall and verify the result
- Run the saved NVIDIA or AMD installer while still offline.
- Choose the vendor’s clean-install control when available.
- Restart even if setup does not demand it.
- Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and confirm that the expected GPU appears without a warning icon.
- Check the installed driver version and test a normal desktop workload before launching a demanding game or benchmark.
- Reconnect the internet and watch whether Windows replaces the package or the display goes blank again.
If the display works until Windows reconnects, the remaining fault is likely a driver-selection conflict. Capture the version Windows installs and the version you intended to keep; that evidence is more useful than another blind reinstall.
What to do when the screen goes black
The screen is black only during installation
Driver replacement can briefly interrupt the display. Wait for setup to finish and allow the installer to reboot. Do not force power off immediately unless the computer is clearly unresponsive for an extended period. After reboot, determine whether Windows reaches the sign-in screen and whether the monitor regains signal.

The screen stays black after reboot
A persistent no-signal state can come from a loose PCIe card, an incorrect display output, a power problem, a bad cable or monitor, firmware settings, or a failed component. Try the following in order:

- Turn the computer off, reseat the graphics card, and check that its retaining bracket is secure.
- Reconnect the monitor cable and test another output on the GPU. If the processor or motherboard provides integrated graphics, use that output temporarily to reach Windows and inspect Device Manager.
- Check that every required GPU power connector is attached. AMD’s stability guidance specifically recommends independent PSU cables rather than a single daisy-chained cable where the power supply provides separate leads.
- Verify that the power supply meets the GPU’s stated requirements.
- Remove or bypass a PCIe riser cable while testing. A riser can add a signal or power fault that looks like a driver crash.
- Try another known-good display cable or monitor.
A clean install cannot correct insufficient power, poor PCIe contact, a failing riser, or a defective card. If the system loses signal before Windows loads, continue with hardware isolation rather than repeating driver cleanup.

AMD lists random reboots, application hangs, display-driver timeouts (TDRs), blue screens, and WHEA hardware events as stability symptoms. Once the package is installed correctly, investigate software and hardware separately.
Check for a documented driver regression
Read the release notes for the installed version and for the previous stable version. AMD’s release notes for Adrenalin Edition 24.5.1, dated May 23, 2024, document an intermittent application crash or driver timeout in specified RDNA 3 scenarios. A version-specific note like that is evidence for trying an earlier package, not evidence that every user should roll back.

- Check the vendor’s release notes for that version and the preceding package.
- If a regression is documented, install the earlier package using the normal clean-install option or the offline Safe Mode sequence above.
- Keep the version that is stable for your workload and record why you selected it.
Isolate third-party software
Use Windows selective startup to start with Microsoft services only, then re-enable non-Microsoft services in groups. Overlay software, hardware monitors, RGB controllers, overclocking utilities, antivirus modules, and capture tools can interact with a display driver. If the crash disappears in selective startup, re-enable items systematically to identify the conflict rather than leaving every service disabled.

Repair Windows system files
Corrupted Windows files can prevent a driver from installing or cause instability after installation. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run sfc /scannow. Restart when it completes and retry the installation or stability test. If SFC reports that it could not repair all files, use System Restore to return to a restore point from before the failures, provided one exists.
Review power and physical installation
Check PCIe seating, independent PSU cabling, the power supply’s capacity, and any riser cable. These checks are especially important when crashes happen under load, after moving the computer, or after installing a higher-power GPU. A driver reinstall should not be used as a substitute for correcting a power or connection fault.
Windows Device Manager Code 43
Microsoft defines Code 43 as the graphics-device driver notifying Windows that the device is not working properly. The code confirms a device/driver problem state, but it does not identify whether the root cause is corrupted software, an incompatible package, insufficient power, a PCIe connection, or hardware failure.
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Open the GPU’s Properties and read the exact status text on the General tab.
- If Windows cannot find a newer driver, obtain the package and installation instructions from the GPU manufacturer’s official site, as Microsoft recommends.
- If Code 43 returns after an offline clean installation, stop treating it as an ordinary installation error and perform the PCIe, PSU, cable, riser, and alternate-display checks.
NVIDIA and AMD: where the troubleshooting paths differ

The common sequence is more important than the brand: settle Windows Update, use the exact package, clean the software only when necessary, then investigate documented regressions and hardware.
How to prevent the same failure on the next update
- Keep a known-good driver package locally before starting an update.
- Record the current driver version and create a System Restore point when your Windows configuration permits it.
- After a fresh Windows install or major update, allow the background driver transaction to finish before running vendor setup.
- Read release notes for known application crashes, timeouts, and unsupported configurations before adopting a new version.
- Avoid changing the driver, GPU overclock, PSU cabling, and multiple monitoring utilities at the same time; changing one variable makes failures easier to identify.
- Keep the GPU firmly seated and its power connectors fully inserted. Recheck them after transporting the computer.
When to stop reinstalling drivers
Stop repeating installation attempts when the same crash survives an offline clean install, a documented rollback, selective startup, and system-file repair, or when the computer loses signal before Windows loads. At that point, test the GPU in a known-good system if possible, test another GPU in the same system, or seek qualified hardware service. Driver cleanup can remove software remnants, but it cannot prove that the graphics card, power supply, motherboard slot, cable, or riser is healthy.
