What “missing or incorrect” crypto data means
Australian tax reporting can fail in several different ways: an exchange export is incomplete, a wallet is omitted, a transaction is assigned to the wrong tax category, a crypto-to-crypto swap is treated as invisible because no Australian dollars were received, or a price and date are entered without evidence. A closed exchange account, lost device, disconnected wallet or old email address can make the gap harder to see, but it does not remove the need to reconstruct the activity.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) expects records for every crypto asset and transaction. The record set includes receipts; transaction dates; the purpose of a transaction; the other party, which may be a crypto address; Australian-dollar values; exchange records; wallet records; keys; and relevant fees. Preserve private keys securely and never publish them as part of your tax file.
If the return has not been lodged, complete the reconstruction before submitting it. If it has already been lodged and crypto was omitted or placed in the wrong income category, an amendment is available. Tim Loh of the ATO explains: “So if you forgot to add it into your tax return or made a mistake like adding it into investment income like gross interest or claiming a deduction, instead of reporting a capital gain or loss, you can lodge an amendment.”

Start with an account and wallet inventory
Create a master list before downloading anything. Include accounts that held crypto briefly or were later closed; a small deposit, test transfer or fee can affect the chain of evidence.
- Centralised exchanges and broker accounts, including accounts opened under an old email address or phone number.
- Self-custody software wallets, hardware wallets and paper backups.
- Every public wallet address you controlled, grouped by blockchain and asset.
- Smart-contract platforms used for swaps, staking, lending, liquidity or airdrops.
- Bank accounts, cards and payment services used for fiat deposits, purchases or withdrawals.
- Tax returns and workpapers for prior years, including any crypto schedules or capital-gains calculations.
Record the wallet address, network, account owner, period used and where the recovery material is stored. Do not put seed phrases or private keys in an ordinary spreadsheet, email or cloud note. Your tax workpaper needs to prove control and activity without exposing credentials.
Download primary records before trying to calculate tax
Exchange dashboards often show a summary that is less complete than a formal export. Download the original files and save an unedited copy with the export date. If an exchange offers separate reports, obtain each relevant category:
- Trades, conversions and order fills, including the asset sold and asset received.
- Deposits and withdrawals for crypto and fiat.
- Staking, lending, rewards, mining, referral payments and airdrops.
- Trading, network, withdrawal and platform fees.
- Fiat-funding history, card purchases and cash withdrawals.
- Monthly or annual statements and PDF confirmations where available.
Keep a second working copy for cleaning and matching. Never overwrite the original export. Note the account’s reporting time zone and whether timestamps are shown in local time or UTC; mismatched time zones can make an otherwise valid transfer appear to occur before its corresponding trade.
When an exchange account is closed
Contact the exchange’s customer-service team or insolvency administrator in writing. Request the complete transaction history, account statements, identity details associated with the account and the date range you used. Retain your request, the response, attachments and any notices explaining that records cannot be supplied. A partial response is still evidence: mark the period and transaction types it covers, then identify the remaining gap instead of treating the account as fully reconstructed.
Search your own records for confirmation emails, two-factor-authentication notices, deposit addresses, withdrawal notices, invoices and downloaded statements. Match those documents to bank entries and on-chain transactions. Do not fill a missing price or date with a guess merely because the exchange no longer operates.

Reconstruct wallet and blockchain activity
For each public address, use a blockchain explorer for the relevant network. The ATO specifically identifies blockchain explorers and exchange customer service as ways to recreate lost records. Export or save the explorer pages where possible, and retain the transaction hash for every movement.
- Identify the address and network. Confirm that the address belongs to your wallet and that you are viewing the correct chain. Similar-looking addresses on different networks are not interchangeable.
- Capture each event. Record the transaction hash, timestamp, asset, quantity, sending address, receiving address, fee and any contract interaction.
- Group related movements. A withdrawal from an exchange and a deposit to your wallet may be the same transfer. Match quantity, asset, time and transaction hash rather than counting both as separate acquisitions.
- Investigate contract calls. A single transaction can contain a swap, liquidity action, reward or fee. Read the token movements and contract name; if the tax purpose remains unclear, flag it for review.
- Map addresses to ownership. Label your own addresses, exchange deposit addresses and unknown counterparties. An address can be the counterparty record required by the ATO, but it does not by itself prove who controls it.
Blockchain data proves that an event occurred on-chain; it may not prove the Australian-dollar value, the commercial purpose or the identity of the other party. Pair it with exchange, bank, invoice or email evidence and state the limitation in your workpaper.
Recover fiat evidence and connect it to crypto events
Download bank and card statements for every period in which crypto activity occurred. Search for exchange names, payment processors, reference numbers and round-dollar transfers. Build a matching column that links each fiat entry to an exchange deposit, purchase, sale or withdrawal.
Where a bank payment cannot be linked, do not force a match. Label it “unresolved” and investigate whether it was a personal transfer, a fee, a failed order or a payment to a different account. Keep invoices, sale confirmations and correspondence for transactions involving goods or services. These documents help establish purpose and the Australian-dollar amount at the relevant time.
Classify the purpose, counterparty and tax event
Before calculating amounts, give every row a transaction type and purpose. At minimum, use labels such as purchase, sale, crypto-to-crypto exchange, transfer, fee, staking or other reward, airdrop, lending activity, payment for goods or services, and unknown. Add the counterparty or wallet address and the evidence supporting the label.

Transfers require particular care. A movement between accounts you control may be a record-keeping transfer rather than a disposal, but the facts, ownership and transaction purpose must be established. Keep the withdrawal and deposit together, preserve both hashes or statements and have a registered tax agent review uncertain cases.
Calculate each disposal in Australian dollars
For every event that is a disposal, calculate the Australian-dollar market value at the transaction time, disposal proceeds, cost base and allowable fees. Use a consistent valuation method and record the source, timestamp, asset pair and exchange or market used. The method should be reproducible by someone reviewing your file later.
| Ledger field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Date and time | Timestamp, time zone and source record | Prices and ownership can change within minutes; the source time lets a reviewer reproduce the valuation. |
| Asset and quantity | Token symbol, network and units sent or received | Prevents similarly named assets or cross-chain movements being merged. |
| Event type | Purchase, disposal, swap, transfer, fee, reward, airdrop or unknown | Separates potential CGT events from movements that need different treatment. |
| Australian-dollar value | Market value at the transaction time and valuation source | Supports proceeds, cost-base and income calculations. |
| Fees | Asset, quantity, Australian-dollar value and who charged it | Fees can affect the calculation and must be supported by a receipt or statement. |
| Counterparty and purpose | Name where known, otherwise address or platform; commercial purpose | These are part of the ATO’s required record set. |
| Evidence and confidence | File name, transaction hash, statement page and confidence level | Makes gaps and assumptions visible instead of hiding them. |
For an acquisition, retain the evidence that establishes the cost base. For a disposal, retain the evidence for proceeds and the asset’s acquisition history. If an asset was acquired in several lots, preserve the lot-level trail and the method used to identify the units disposed of. Do not silently change a historical price to make totals reconcile.

Reconciliation is the control that catches double-counted transfers, missing fees and unexplained balances. Work from opening to closing holdings for each asset and wallet.
- Enter opening balances supported by prior statements or the prior-year workpaper.
- Add purchases, deposits, rewards and other acquisitions.
- Subtract disposals, withdrawals, fees and confirmed transfers out.
- Compare the calculated closing balance with each exchange statement and on-chain balance.
- Investigate every difference. Classify it as a missing event, duplicate, timing difference, unsupported balance or valuation-only difference.
- Compare the final ledger with any ATO pre-filled or matched information and retain notes explaining agreements or discrepancies.
The ATO’s crypto-assets data-matching program covers the 2014–15 to 2025–26 income years. The protocol was last updated on 25 April 2024. A mismatch does not automatically establish an error, but it is a reason to review the period, account and transaction type rather than ignore the difference.
Choose a reconstruction approach based on evidence quality
A calculator or spreadsheet is only as reliable as the records imported into it. The following comparison helps decide what to use and when professional review is needed.

| Approach | Evidence quality | Coverage strengths | Typical limitations | Review requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange exports plus statements | Primary account records | Trades, deposits, withdrawals, fees and fiat funding for that exchange | Does not cover self-custody wallets or a closed account’s missing period | Check time zone, duplicate transfers and omitted reward products |
| Wallet history plus blockchain explorer | On-chain evidence | Public transfers, contract calls, quantities and hashes | May not establish Australian-dollar value, purpose or counterparty identity | Match addresses to ownership and obtain valuation evidence |
| Bank, card and invoice records | Financial evidence | Fiat deposits, purchases, sales and payments for goods or services | May not show the token quantity or the wallet receiving it | Link each entry to an exchange or on-chain event |
| Estimate for an unresolved gap | Lowest evidence quality | Can document an unavoidable assumption when primary data cannot be recovered | Creates audit risk and may misstate proceeds, cost base or ownership | Document the method and have a registered tax agent assess whether disclosure is appropriate |
| Synchronised crypto record-keeping software | Depends on imported source data and settings | Can combine exchange and wallet accounts and flag unmatched movements | Unsupported integrations, misclassified transfers or missing historical prices can flow into the result | Review imports, classifications, valuation settings and exceptions manually |
The ATO recognises reputable crypto tax calculators that sync exchange and wallet accounts as one way to recreate records. Treat synchronisation as an aid to collection and reconciliation, not as proof that every classification is correct. Export the underlying files and retain the software’s calculation report with your own review notes.
Document assumptions and use evidence tiers
For every unresolved row, write what is known, what is inferred and what remains unknown. A practical evidence scale is:
- Tier 1: Original exchange export, statement, receipt or transaction hash tied to a known wallet.
- Tier 2: Two independent records that agree, such as a bank entry matched to an exchange confirmation or an explorer record matched to a withdrawal statement.
- Tier 3: A single indirect record, such as an email without a matching statement or an explorer event with no confirmed ownership.
- Tier 4: A documented estimate used only after reasonable recovery attempts, with the uncertainty clearly stated.
Never invent a date, price, quantity, wallet owner or counterparty. If a range is unavoidable, preserve the calculation for each assumption and explain why the selected figure is reasonable. Keep a review log showing who made the classification, when it was changed and which evidence supported the change.
Amend an Australian tax return that was already lodged
If crypto was left out, reported under the wrong income category or treated as a deduction instead of a capital gain or loss, prepare an amendment rather than quietly changing the next year’s figures. Rebuild the affected year’s ledger, identify the exact omitted or misclassified items and calculate the corrected result.
- Assemble the source files, ledger, valuation schedule and reconciliation for the affected year.
- Separate confirmed figures from estimates and attach an assumptions schedule to your workpapers.
- Recalculate the relevant capital gains, capital losses or other income treatment using the corrected transaction classifications.
- Compare the corrected figures with the lodged return and record each field that changes.
- Lodge the amendment through the applicable ATO process or have a registered tax agent lodge it for you.
- Retain confirmation of lodgment and the complete calculation pack with the original return records.
Where several years are affected, do not amend only the first year you notice. Review opening balances and carried-forward amounts so that one correction does not create a new inconsistency in a later return.
When professional help is the safer option
Use a registered tax agent when the facts exceed a straightforward exchange-and-wallet history, especially for:

- Decentralised-finance transactions, staking, lending, liquidity positions or complex smart contracts.
- Large unexplained gaps, unidentified wallets or uncertainty about who controlled an address.
- Numerous crypto-to-crypto swaps, airdrops or rewards with incomplete Australian-dollar valuations.
- A possible voluntary disclosure or concern that the ATO’s data matching may identify a discrepancy.
Give the agent the original exports and your uncertainty log, not just a final spreadsheet. The purpose of professional review is to test classifications and evidence, not to replace missing facts with unsupported numbers.
Keep the records for the required period
The ATO says records generally need to be kept for at least five years from the later relevant record, transaction or CGT-event point, and long enough to cover the usual two- or four-year amendment period. The ATO’s record-keeping guidance was last updated on 16 June 2024. Retain records longer when an amendment, review or dispute remains open.
Store the original exports, PDFs, bank statements, explorer captures, transaction hashes, valuation sources, software reports, ledger versions, amendment confirmations and correspondence in a structured folder. Use read-only or backed-up copies and record the export date so a later reviewer can distinguish an original file from a cleaned working file.

Final pre-lodgment checklist
- Every exchange, wallet, smart contract and funding account is listed.
- Original trade, deposit, withdrawal, reward, airdrop and fee records are saved.
- Closed-account requests and responses are retained.
- Each wallet address is mapped to an owner or marked unknown.
- Transfers are matched and not double-counted.
- Crypto-to-crypto swaps are reviewed as potential disposals.
- Australian-dollar values, proceeds, cost bases and fees have a stated source and time.
- Purpose and counterparty or address are recorded for each transaction.
- Opening and closing balances reconcile for every asset and account.
- Unresolved items have written assumptions and evidence-quality ratings.
- ATO matched or pre-filled information has been checked.
- An amendment is prepared for any already-lodged return that omitted or misclassified crypto.
- The full calculation pack is backed up and retained for the required period.
Common failure modes and the correction
Counting an exchange withdrawal and wallet deposit twice
Match the asset, quantity, timestamp and transaction hash. Keep both source records, but create one transfer relationship in the ledger.
Treating every wallet movement as a sale
Identify whether the movement was a transfer, payment, swap or contract interaction. Preserve ownership evidence and obtain advice where the purpose is uncertain.
Ignoring swaps because no cash was received
Review every asset-for-asset exchange as a potential CGT disposal and capture its Australian-dollar market value at the transaction time.
Using a current price for a historical event
Use a contemporaneous valuation source, record the timestamp and explain any unavoidable estimate. A current balance is not historical disposal evidence.

Relying on a software total without checking imports
Inspect account coverage, unmatched transfers, duplicate transactions, missing fees and classification rules. Keep the raw exports so the total can be reproduced independently.
Replacing unknown facts with confident numbers
Mark the row unresolved, document recovery attempts and escalate to a registered tax agent. An explicit uncertainty is safer than an invented date, price or ownership claim.
