IRS2Go has transitioned to the IRS app. Update the existing app through the official Apple App Store or Google Play listing; you do not need a separate download. You can check a federal refund without signing in, while account-only services use a secure IRS sign-in window. If a payment fails, switch to the official payment tools at IRS.gov rather than retrying blindly.
What changed: IRS2Go is now the IRS app
The Internal Revenue Service launched the IRS app on September 25, 2026, as the successor to IRS2Go. Existing users should receive the change through their normal app-store update process, or they can open the official IRS.gov/app page and follow its verified Apple App Store or Google Play link. There is no need to install a second app simply because the name changed.

Use only the store listing reached from IRS.gov. Look-alike apps, advertisements and unsolicited messages can be designed to collect Social Security numbers, passwords or payment information. The IRS says it will not request sensitive personal or financial information through an unsolicited text, email or pop-up.
Recommended Free Tools
The IRS currently lists iOS/iPadOS 15.1 or later and Android 7.0 or later as the minimum supported operating-system versions. Those requirements can change, so check the current FAQ before troubleshooting an older phone: IRS2Go to IRS app — Frequently asked questions.

Use this quick route for the problem you have
| What you need to do | Sign-in required? | Best official route | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check federal refund status | No | Where’s My Refund? in the app or on IRS.gov | You need your SSN or ITIN, filing status and exact refund amount claimed. |
| View account information or use account features | Yes | IRS app secure sign-in, with the IRS-approved identity-verification process | The app opens a secure browser window and then returns you to the app. |
| Make a bank-account payment | No for a guest payment | Direct Pay through the IRS payment tools | Keep the confirmation; do not submit a second payment until you know whether the first was accepted. |
| Pay by card or digital wallet | Generally available through IRS payment choices | IRS app or the payment links on IRS.gov | The IRS app help page warns that card and digital-wallet payments may carry a fee. |
| Review balances, payment history or an agreement | Usually yes for account details | IRS online account and the payment tools directory | A failed app screen does not prove that a payment was rejected. |
The IRS tools directory lists refund, payment, online-account and payment-agreement services. Choose the route that matches the task instead of repeatedly trying an app function that is unavailable or failing.
If the app is missing, still shows IRS2Go or will not update
1. Confirm that the name change is the issue
Seeing IRS2Go in your app list does not mean your account or refund data disappeared. The service moved to the IRS app. Open your device’s official app store, search for the IRS app and look for the listing reached from IRS.gov/app. If automatic updates are enabled, the replacement should arrive through the ordinary update process.
2. Check the operating-system requirement
The current IRS FAQ states a minimum of iOS/iPadOS 15.1 or Android 7.0. If your device is below that threshold, update the operating system if the manufacturer supports it. If the phone cannot meet the requirement, use IRS.gov in a browser for refund and payment tools rather than installing an unofficial package.

3. Use the store’s support for a download problem
The IRS FAQ directs users to Apple App Store or Google Play support for store-specific update and download failures. Check that the device has a working internet connection and enough storage, then retry through the official listing. Do not use an APK from a third-party site or an app-store mirror. IRS guidance does not establish deleting and reinstalling as a universal fix, so do not treat it as a guaranteed solution.

4. Keep using the web tools while the app is unavailable
Refund tracking, Direct Pay and other services remain available through IRS.gov. A temporary installation problem therefore does not require waiting for the app before checking a refund or arranging a payment.
Why you cannot sign in to the IRS app
Refund tracking does not require a login
If your only goal is to see a refund status, skip sign-in. Open Where’s My Refund? in the app or use the IRS refund-status page. Enter the taxpayer’s SSN or ITIN, filing status and the exact refund amount claimed on the return. A failed account login does not block this lookup.
Account features use a secure browser session
For account-only services, the IRS app transfers you to a secure browser window for IRS sign-in and then returns you to the app. The IRS help page identifies ID.me verification for these account features. Complete the identity check only on the IRS sign-in flow reached from the app or IRS.gov; never follow a login link in an unsolicited message.
Check for an expired session
The IRS FAQ says an active session may last up to 60 minutes while you are using the app. After the session expires, start the sign-in process again. A timeout is different from a rejected identity check: reopening the sign-in window can resolve the former, but not incorrect credentials or an identity-verification problem.

Recover credentials without exposing them
Use the IRS-approved sign-in support route linked from the IRS app help and FAQ pages. Do not give a supposed “app support” account your password, one-time code, SSN, bank details or card number. The IRS will not ask for those secrets through an unsolicited text, email or pop-up.
If the error is a device-specific code that the IRS material does not document, record the exact message and use the official sign-in or service-support path. There is no established universal fix for every code, and repeatedly guessing credentials can create additional lockouts.
How to check your refund when you cannot log in
Enter the three required pieces of information
- Open Where’s My Refund? in the IRS app or navigate to the tool from IRS.gov’s refund-status page.
- Enter the SSN or ITIN exactly as it appears on the filed return.
- Select the filing status used on that return.
- Enter the exact federal refund amount claimed, not a rounded estimate or the amount you expect after a later adjustment.
Understand the three status messages
| Status shown | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Return received | The return is in the tracker. | It is not an approval or a promise that money has been sent. |
| Refund approved | The IRS is preparing to send the refund. | The funds may not yet be posted by your bank or delivered by mail. |
| Refund sent | The IRS has sent the refund. | It does not guarantee that a bank has posted a direct deposit or that a paper check has arrived. |
Allow for the daily refresh
IRS Tax Tip 2022-60 says the tracker updates once a day, usually overnight, so checking repeatedly during the same day is not useful. The IRS page also contains historical guidance that an electronically filed return could generally first be checked within 24 hours after IRS acknowledgment. That older timing should not be read as a guarantee for every current return or filing situation.
When an IRS payment will not submit
Switch to an official payment method
If the app payment screen errors, open the IRS tools directory and choose the payment service directly. Direct Pay lets you make a guest payment from a bank account. The IRS app help page also describes card and digital-wallet options and warns that those methods may incur a fee.
Rank #4
- Open the payment tool from IRS.gov rather than from a link in a text or email.
- Choose the payment type and tax period that match your notice or account.
- Enter the requested taxpayer and bank or card information on the secure IRS or authorized payment page.
- Save or print the transaction confirmation number and the date submitted.
- Before trying again, check whether the first attempt was accepted or appears in your IRS account or bank activity.
Do not assume an error means rejection
The reviewed IRS pages do not state one universal processing time for every failed payment or for a missing activity entry. A timeout, a browser interruption or a delayed account display can leave the result uncertain. Keep the confirmation and use official IRS payment help to determine the status. Submitting a second payment before checking can create a duplicate payment.
Use account and agreement tools when the balance is the problem
The IRS tools directory includes online accounts for balances and payment history, plus online payment agreements for taxpayers who cannot pay in full. Those are separate services from simply retrying the app’s payment screen; choose the option that fits whether you need a record, a one-time payment or an arrangement.

Separate IRS transmission from bank or mail delivery
“Refund sent” means the IRS has sent the refund. It does not mean your bank has already posted a direct deposit or that the Postal Service has delivered a paper check. Banks and mail delivery require additional time, and the tracker can remain unchanged while those steps occur.
Check the return and allow the normal interval
Verify the routing and account information or mailing address on the filed return, and check whether an IRS notice explains an adjustment. Make sure the full processing interval has passed before requesting a trace. Calling the IRS does not speed up a refund according to the cited IRS guidance.

Request a trace when the refund is genuinely missing
The Taxpayer Advocate Service’s Lost or Stolen Refund guidance, updated March 30, 2026, describes these general thresholds:
- For direct deposit, a trace may be requested when the deposit has not arrived within five days after the usual 21-day period.
- For a paper check, a trace may be requested after six weeks.
- For a married-filing-jointly return, the process may require Form 3911.
- Other filing statuses can use the hotline or the online/app prompts described by the Taxpayer Advocate Service.
These are trace-guidance thresholds, not a promise that every return follows the same schedule. Confirm the current requirements on the Taxpayer Advocate Service page before filing a trace, especially if the return was amended, claimed a special credit or is subject to additional review.
Security checks that prevent a bigger problem
- Start downloads and sign-ins from IRS.gov/app or another IRS.gov page, not from an advertisement or unsolicited message.
- Verify the publisher in the Apple App Store or Google Play listing before installing an update.
- Never send a password, one-time code, SSN, ITIN, bank account or card details to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Do not use unofficial refund-status services that ask for a fee or promise to release a refund.
- If a pop-up claims your phone or refund is blocked and demands immediate payment, close it and open IRS.gov yourself.
The IRS’s transition FAQ and Tax Tip explain that verified links are the safe way to reach the app and refund tools. A familiar IRS2Go name in a message is not proof that the message is genuine.

Bottom line
Update IRS2Go through the verified store link because it is now the IRS app. Use Where’s My Refund? without logging in, use the secure IRS sign-in only for account features, and move failed payments to the official IRS.gov tools—especially Direct Pay—while preserving every confirmation. A “sent” refund still needs bank or mail delivery time; if it remains missing after the applicable interval, use the Taxpayer Advocate Service trace process.
