Short answer: Windows 11 on Snapdragon X can run native ARM64 software and many older x86 or x64 applications through Microsoft’s Prism emulation. Prism cannot emulate a missing kernel, filter, shell-extension, or hardware driver. If an application opens but printing, scanning, audio, VPN, capture, or another device function does not work, troubleshoot the driver and service separately from the application.
What compatibility means on a Snapdragon X laptop
Snapdragon X notebooks use Windows 11 on Arm. There are three relevant software categories:

- x86 applications: older 32-bit Windows programs that Windows can often run through Prism.
- x64 applications: 64-bit Intel or AMD programs that supported Windows 11 on Arm devices can also run through Prism.
Prism is Microsoft’s emulation engine for everyday apps that do not yet have a native Windows-on-Arm release. Emulation translates processor instructions while the program is running; it does not translate a driver package, install a kernel component, or make a hardware vendor’s service ARM64-compatible. Microsoft’s support guidance is explicit: “Peripherals and devices only work if the drivers they depend on are built into Windows 11, or if the hardware developer has released Arm64 drivers for the device.”

In each case, the executable and the device stack are separate compatibility problems.

Identify which layer is failing
Classify the symptom before reinstalling software. The classification determines whether Prism, a Windows update, or an ARM64 driver can help.

Do not assume that a successful installation proves compatibility. An installer can copy files while a service, filter, or driver fails later when Windows starts the device.
Use this troubleshooting sequence
- Record the exact failure. Note the application version, Windows 11 build, Snapdragon X laptop model, peripheral model and revision, and whether the failure occurs during installation, launch, device detection, or a particular feature.
- Install Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install all applicable updates, restart, and check again. Compatibility behavior can change with Windows builds.
- Update the laptop maker’s firmware and drivers. Use the support page for the exact laptop model, not a generic package for another edition. Apply BIOS or UEFI firmware, chipset, graphics, audio, networking, and other OEM updates offered for Windows 11 on Arm.
- Find a native ARM64 application. Check the software developer’s download page or Microsoft Store listing for “ARM64,” “Arm,” or “Windows on Arm.” Prefer the ARM64 package when one exists; it removes an emulation dependency and generally provides the vendor’s intended feature set.
- Test an x86 or x64 release with Prism. If no ARM64 build exists, install the ordinary Windows version from a trusted vendor source. Prism handles many user-mode applications automatically on supported Windows 11 on Arm devices.
- Apply per-app compatibility options only when needed. Microsoft documents optional emulation and compatibility settings for uncommon failures. Use the app’s Windows compatibility properties or the relevant Windows 11 on Arm guidance, change one setting at a time, and retest after each change.
- Check the device stack independently. In Settings > Bluetooth & devices or Device Manager, verify whether Windows detects the hardware, reports an error code, or lists an unknown device. A running emulated app does not establish that its driver is present.
- Try Windows’ built-in driver. Disconnect and reconnect the peripheral, use Windows Update’s optional driver area when offered, and test the basic function in a Windows application. Avoid repeatedly running an x86-only manufacturer installer if the inbox driver already supports the model.
- Verify the exact model and revision. ARM64 support can differ between closely named devices and regional revisions. Use the model number printed on the hardware and compare it with the vendor’s Windows-on-Arm or ARM64 driver statement.
- Escalate or choose an alternative. Ask the vendor for an ARM64 application, driver, firmware, or a documented Windows 11 on Arm workaround. If support is unavailable, use a supported alternative application or peripheral, or perform that workflow on an x86-64 Windows computer.
When Prism can fix the application
Programs that usually benefit
Prism is intended for ordinary user-mode programs whose executable contains x86 or x64 instructions but whose work can be completed through Windows’ existing Arm-compatible APIs. Examples include many office utilities, editors, account tools, and other desktop programs that do not install low-level components. The app may run with some performance or battery trade-off compared with native ARM64 code, but no separate conversion is required.
Programs Prism cannot complete by itself
Prism does not recompile or emulate kernel-mode drivers. It also cannot supply a missing device filter, shell extension, protected service, virtual printer, anti-cheat component, or hardware-control module. A control panel that depends on one of these components can fail even when its main executable opens normally.

Microsoft Learn notes that Prism is available on supported Windows 11 on Arm devices and that some performance features require Snapdragon X-series hardware. That makes the laptop’s Windows edition and processor relevant: do not generalize behavior from an older Arm computer or a different Windows build.
How to test an emulated app cleanly
- Install the latest x86 or x64 release after updating Windows.
- Launch the program without the peripheral attached to separate application startup from hardware initialization.
- Open the application’s own diagnostics or About page and record its version and architecture if shown.
- Attach the device and enable one feature at a time. If the failure begins at device initialization, investigate the driver stack rather than changing Prism settings.
- Remove compatibility overrides that were added for another computer; an unnecessary override can create a new failure.
Drivers are a separate ARM64 requirement
A Windows driver is compiled for a specific processor architecture and operating-system interface. An x86 application can be translated by Prism, but its driver cannot simply be translated along with it. The driver must be included in Windows 11 or supplied by the hardware developer as an ARM64 package.

Printers, scanners, audio gear, and other peripherals
Start with the inbox Windows driver
Connect the device and check whether Windows 11 recognizes the model without the manufacturer’s setup program. For printers, add it through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device. For audio hardware, inspect Settings > System > Sound and Device Manager. If basic operation works, the device may be supported by an inbox driver even though the vendor’s optional control application is not.
Manufacturer installers may be the incompatibility
Microsoft warns that some manufacturer installers, including printer installers, may not work when the software lacks Arm support. An x86-only setup wizard can fail before Windows has a chance to use its built-in driver. Try the Windows device-add flow first, then ask the manufacturer whether it provides an ARM64 installer or a model-specific installation method.
Separate basic operation from advanced features
Test printing, scanning, playback, recording, or capture in a standard Windows application before installing optional utilities. Duplex controls, color-management panels, firmware upload tools, low-latency audio modes, macros, and proprietary effects often rely on additional services or filters. Record which basic and advanced functions work; report that distinction to the vendor.

USB, docks, and hubs do not create support
A cable, dock, or USB-C hub can change how a device is connected, but it cannot create an absent ARM64 driver. Changing ports is a reasonable electrical or enumeration test; it is not an architecture fix. If the same model fails on every port and Windows reports no compatible driver, the hardware vendor must provide one or the workflow needs an alternative.

Use the Works on WoA directory as a current check
Microsoft links to a Works on WoA compatibility directory containing a growing list of Windows-on-Arm applications. Search for the exact application and version before purchasing or migrating a workflow. Treat an entry as a current check, not a permanent guarantee: application releases, Windows builds, licensing components, and device integrations can change after a listing is published. A directory entry for an application also does not prove that every peripheral used by that application has an ARM64 driver.

Make the decision using five questions: Is there an ARM64 build? Does the workflow require a kernel or device driver? Is the vendor actively updating the product? Are all required features, not just launch, supported? Is replacing the software or peripheral cheaper than maintaining an x86-64 computer?
Common failure modes and recoveries
The app will not install
Check whether the download is an ARM64, x86, or x64 package and whether the publisher supports Windows 11 on Arm. Update Windows, obtain the current release, and try the vendor’s Store package if one is offered. If only an unsupported installer exists, Prism cannot guarantee that the installer itself will work; request an ARM64 package from the developer.
The app launches but says “device not found”
Confirm the device appears in Device Manager without an error, then test the inbox Windows driver and the exact model’s support page. If Windows sees an unknown device or a driver-start error, reinstalling the emulated app is unlikely to help. The missing component must be replaced with an ARM64 driver or removed from the workflow.

Only the vendor control panel fails
Use the device’s basic Windows controls to establish that the hardware works. Then look for an ARM64 control panel or a documented method that does not require the shell extension or service. Do not infer that the hardware is defective solely because an optional x86 utility is incompatible.
A workaround worked until a Windows update
Record the Windows build and driver version, install the laptop maker’s current firmware and drivers, and check the vendor’s release notes or support channel. Compatibility is version-sensitive; a workaround that depends on an old filter or service can break when Windows changes its driver policy.
What to send a vendor or IT support
- Snapdragon X laptop model and Windows 11 edition/build
- Application name, version, and whether it is ARM64, x86, or x64
- Peripheral manufacturer, exact model number, firmware version, and connection type
- The precise stage of failure: installation, launch, detection, printing, scanning, recording, or an advanced feature
- Device Manager status, error code, and whether the inbox Windows driver was tested
- Windows Update and OEM firmware/driver versions
Ask a direct question: “Do you provide an ARM64 Windows 11 driver and application for this exact model?” A generic statement that the product supports Windows is not enough; support for x86-64 Windows does not establish support for Windows on Arm.

When replacing the setup is the rational fix
If the developer confirms that no ARM64 application, driver, or filter is planned, further Prism experiments cannot supply the missing component. Choose a supported alternative application or peripheral after verifying its ARM64 coverage, or keep an x86-64 Windows computer for the legacy workflow. This is especially important for equipment used for work, recording, scanning, security, or production, where an untested workaround can fail at the moment the device is needed.
The Snapdragon X laptop remains suitable for the rest of the workflow when native ARM64 software or Prism-compatible user-mode applications meet your needs. Compatibility should be evaluated per application and per device, not as a single yes-or-no property of the computer.
