Start with the reversible fixes: install every game, Windows, and graphics-driver update; verify the game files; close overlays, recording tools, mods, and unnecessary background software; then let the game finish its first shader-cache build before judging performance. If loading remains slow, check free RAM, VRAM, drive health, thermals, and whether the installation is on an SSD or M.2 drive. These steps separate a normal first-launch warm-up from a damaged installation, software conflict, hardware limit, or genuine game bug.
Follow the order below. It moves from low-risk checks that cost nothing to measurements and hardware changes, while preserving your saves and collecting the evidence a developer needs if the problem persists.

First, identify which problem you actually have
“The game is slow” can describe several different failures. The remedy depends on when the delay or instability occurs, so note the exact symptom before changing settings.

1. Establish a clean baseline before changing hardware
Check the published requirements
Compare your CPU, graphics card, available VRAM, system RAM, operating-system version, and storage configuration with the game’s minimum and recommended requirements. Minimum specifications describe a floor for starting the game; they do not promise the same settings, frame rate, or loading behavior as a system at the recommended level. If a PC meets only the minimum, start by lowering demanding options rather than assuming the installation is defective.
Install all updates
Apply the game’s latest patch, run Windows Update, and install the current driver for your GPU. Steam Support’s launch checklist specifically calls for updated Windows and drivers, a check of system requirements, file verification, and disabling non-essential software. Reboot after major driver or Windows updates so pending components are actually loaded.
Record the starting state
Before making several changes at once, note the current graphics settings, driver version, free RAM, free space on the system and game drives, and whether the game is running on battery. Change one category at a time where practical. That gives you a way to identify the fix and to undo a change that makes the problem worse.
2. Verify the installation files
File verification is a low-risk diagnostic because it checks the downloaded data without requiring you to delete the entire game. Capcom explains that the launcher compares file checksums with its server manifest and reacquires files that are missing or corrupted.
Use the launcher’s verification command
- Open the launcher that owns the installation.
- Select the game and open its management, properties, or settings menu.
- Choose the command labelled “Verify integrity,” “Verify files,” “Repair,” or the equivalent wording.
- Let the scan and any replacement download finish before launching the game again.
- Restart the PC if the launcher reports that files were repaired, then test the same save or location where the fault occurred.
The exact label differs among launchers. Do not interrupt the process or remove the game directory while it is comparing files. Verification will not repair a failing drive, an incompatible driver, overheating, or a game bug, but it quickly rules out a damaged download.
3. Remove software conflicts that affect launching and stability
A newly released game can conflict with software that injects an overlay, records the screen, modifies files, or scans the process. Temporarily close non-essential applications and test the game in a clean state.

Disable overlays and recording tools
Turn off game overlays, frame-rate counters, hardware-monitoring overlays, capture and streaming tools, and other recording utilities for the test. If the crash disappears, re-enable one tool at a time to identify the conflict. Keep a note of the tool and its version; that information helps support teams reproduce the issue.
Remove or update mods
Move third-party mods out of the game’s folders or use the mod manager’s disable function, then verify files again. A patch can change the files a mod expects, so a mod that worked before release-day updates may now cause a launch crash or broken assets. Keep a backup of mod configuration and save files before removing anything.
Test security software and permissions carefully
Security software can quarantine a new executable or block access to a game folder. Follow the game’s or launcher’s support instructions for an exclusion rather than disabling protection broadly. If the official troubleshooting page recommends it, test launching with administrator privileges. Restore normal security settings after the test, and do not approve an unknown file merely because it prevents a crash.
4. Treat first-session shader stutter as a warm-up process
Shader compilation is a common reason a new release stutters even when average frame rates look adequate. The game must create and store compiled shaders for your specific GPU and driver. Stalls can occur when a new effect or area is encountered for the first time.
Allow the game-specific compilation window
Square Enix states: “After installing and playing the game for the first time, the shader cache is created. Any stuttering should be resolved once the cache has been created.” Its 2026 support article gives a shader-compilation range of 35 to 90 minutes, depending on PC specifications. Keep the game running long enough for that title-specific process to complete, even if the first session is unpleasant, and then retest the same scenes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not interpret one short test immediately after installation as proof that the GPU is too slow. Avoid repeatedly deleting the shader cache or changing drivers during the warm-up, because either action can force compilation to start again.

Understand the CPU side of compilation
AMD says that background shader compilation reduces initial game load times and describes shader compilation as CPU-bound. For affected titles, it recommends allowing about 15 minutes of gameplay before measuring performance. That is a general testing guideline, not a replacement for a game’s own longer compilation estimate. If stutter continues after the cache has been created and the recommended warm-up has elapsed, continue with the memory, settings, thermal, and storage checks below.
5. Reduce the settings that create the most work
If the PC is near the minimum specification, lower settings before buying anything. Use the same scene and camera movement for each test so you can tell whether a change helped.
Change one demanding option at a time
- Shadows: lower shadow quality first; dynamic shadows can create substantial GPU work.
- Detail quality: reduce object, foliage, and environment detail if traversal causes pauses.
- Resolution: test a lower output resolution or an appropriate scaling mode when the GPU is overloaded.
- Window mode: compare the available fullscreen and borderless options if one mode causes instability.
Capcom recommends lowering settings when a system meets minimum but not recommended specifications. Make a note of the original values so you can restore them after a driver or game patch.
Stop automatic GPU-app overrides during diagnosis
GPU control applications can apply per-game “optimal” settings that replace the choices you make in the game. Disable automatic game optimization while troubleshooting so the game’s own settings are respected. Once the game is stable, you can test an automatic profile separately, but do not combine it with several manual changes when trying to identify a cause.
6. Check system RAM and graphics memory
Free system memory matters
SEGA Support associates less than 1 GB of free system memory with paging and repeated stutters. When Windows has to move data between RAM and storage, the game can pause and loading can take longer. Close browsers, launchers, editors, virtual machines, and other large applications, then check free memory while the game is running.
If closing applications restores smoothness, the immediate remedy is to reduce the background workload. If the problem returns with only the game open, compare total installed RAM with the game’s requirements and consider a measured RAM upgrade rather than guessing. A memory upgrade cannot repair corrupted files or a faulty driver, so complete the software checks first.

Watch for VRAM pressure
Insufficient VRAM can force the game to reduce data during loading to avoid an out-of-memory crash. Lower texture or detail settings where the game provides them, reduce resolution if necessary, and close other GPU-using applications. A graphics card with more VRAM may help when monitoring consistently shows the limit being reached, but do not infer a hardware failure from one crash during shader compilation.

7. Move the installation to faster, healthy storage
Mechanical hard drives are supported in the guidance from SEGA, but the company recommends installing the game on a solid-state drive (SSD) or M.2 for the best experience. Their higher read and write speeds can dramatically reduce loading times. This is most relevant when the loading screen is the bottleneck rather than rendering performance.
Check both drives before moving the game
- Confirm which drive contains the game and which contains Windows or the page file.
- Check drive health with the operating system or the drive manufacturer’s diagnostic utility.
- Leave usable free space on both the system drive and the game drive.
- After moving the game, run the launcher’s file-verification command again.
An SSD will not by itself fix a launch crash caused by a bad driver, a blocked executable, or a damaged installation. It can, however, remove a storage bottleneck that produces long loads and aggravates paging when free RAM is low.
Move rather than reinstall when the launcher supports it
Use the launcher’s built-in storage-management or library-move function when available. It reduces the chance of losing saves and avoids downloading the entire game again. Back up saves before any reinstall or manual folder operation, especially when the game does not clearly separate saves from its installation directory.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Check heat, power, and airflow
Desktop checks
Keep intake and exhaust vents clear, make sure fans can spin freely, and avoid testing inside a confined cabinet. Capcom says excessive heat can make gameplay less smooth and recommends better ventilation, lower settings, or a frame-rate limit. A frame-rate cap reduces sustained workload and can be a useful diagnostic: if crashes or severe stutter stop under a cap, heat or power delivery deserves closer inspection.

Laptop checks
Play on AC power rather than battery. Use the manufacturer’s thermal or performance controls, keep vents unobstructed, and place the laptop on a hard surface. SEGA links insufficient laptop cooling with reduced CPU and GPU performance and possible crashes. If performance falls only after several minutes, compare a cold launch with a warm one; that pattern points toward heat rather than a corrupted file.

Do not treat a cooling problem by removing safety limits or applying an untested overclock. Stabilize temperatures with normal manufacturer controls first, then retest at the same settings.
9. Use a decision path instead of buying parts at random
The least expensive and safest order is to rule out reversible causes before replacing hardware. Use this sequence when you are unsure what to try next.
- Launch crash: update Windows, the game, and the GPU driver; verify files; disable overlays and mods; then follow the launcher or developer guidance for security exclusions and administrator testing.
- First-session stutter: allow the game’s shader cache to build for its stated period, including the 35-to-90-minute range documented by Square Enix for its affected title, and use the approximately 15-minute AMD warm-up guideline before measuring.
- Traversal stutter after warm-up: check free RAM, VRAM pressure, settings, overlays, and temperatures. Lower shadows, detail, resolution, or window mode one at a time.
- Long loads: check free memory and storage health, then move the game from a mechanical drive to an SSD or M.2 when possible.
- Persistent failure: collect a reproducible case and contact the developer or launcher support.
This order prioritizes reversibility: updates, verification, and settings changes cost nothing and are easy to undo. Storage or RAM purchases are more defensible after monitoring shows that the existing component is the limiting factor. Reinstalling is more disruptive and carries save-data risk, so back up first.
10. Build a useful crash report when the problem remains
Repeated crashes after the baseline checks may be a game defect, a driver interaction, or a hardware-specific problem. A detailed report gives the developer a chance to reproduce it instead of sending a generic “it crashes” message.
Include the system details
- CPU model.
- GPU model and available VRAM.
- Total RAM and the amount free during the failure.
- Windows version and GPU-driver version.
- Game version and launcher used.
- Security software running during the test.
- Whether the game is on a mechanical drive, SSD, or M.2, plus available free space.
Describe a repeatable reproduction
- State whether the crash occurs before the menu, during loading, or in a particular area.
- List the exact actions that trigger it, in order.
- Say whether verification, a clean launch, lower settings, or a shader warm-up changed the result.
- Attach screenshots or a short video when they show the symptom.
- Include the newest crash-report archive requested by the developer.
Capcom notes that detailed reproduction information helps its team attempt to reproduce an error. Keep the report factual: identify what you tested and what happened, rather than claiming a cause you have not established.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that prolong the problem
- Judging performance during the first few minutes: shader compilation can make a new installation stutter until its cache is built.
- Changing five settings at once: you lose the ability to identify which change helped.
- Deleting caches repeatedly: this can force shader compilation to repeat.
- Reinstalling before verifying: verification can reacquire damaged files without the time and save-data risk of a full reinstall.
- Ignoring free memory: paging below SEGA’s one-gigabyte free-memory threshold can look like a GPU or storage failure.
- Using an automatic optimizer while troubleshooting: it can silently override the game’s settings.
- Disabling security protection permanently: use only the narrowly scoped test recommended by official support, then restore protection.
- Buying hardware without measurements: an SSD, more RAM, or a new GPU cannot correct a blocked executable, bad patch, or incompatible overlay.
A compact troubleshooting checklist
- Record the symptom, location, and whether it is reproducible.
- Compare the PC with minimum and recommended requirements.
- Install game, Windows, and GPU-driver updates.
- Verify or repair the game files.
- Close overlays, recording tools, mods, and unnecessary applications.
- Follow official guidance for security-software exclusions or administrator testing.
- Allow the title-specific shader warm-up; do not measure only the first few minutes.
- Lower shadows, detail, resolution, or window mode one at a time.
- Check free RAM, VRAM pressure, drive health, and free space.
- Use AC power and adequate airflow; apply a frame-rate limit if heat is suspected.
- Move the game to a healthy SSD or M.2 when storage is the demonstrated bottleneck.
- Back up saves before reinstalling or moving files manually.
- Send the developer a complete system profile and reproducible crash report if the issue survives these tests.
