A rejected account login, a registration or Aadhaar OTP, a return-filing EVC, and a GSTR-1 upload validation failure use different checks and sometimes different recipients. Use the symptom in the tables below to select the matching procedure instead of repeatedly requesting codes or changing unrelated settings.
These steps are based on GSTN’s official user guides and known-issue instructions. Portal labels and validation rules can change, so use the linked GSTN pages for the current screen wording. For an account-specific tax or legal question, contact the GST helpdesk or a qualified tax professional.

First, identify which GST workflow is failing
Before troubleshooting, note the form, step, message, and channel involved. A registration OTP may be split between email and mobile, while a GSTR-3B EVC is generated for final filing. Treating every message as a generic “GST OTP problem” often causes a user to enter an old code in the wrong screen.

| What you are doing | Typical symptom | Correct first action |
|---|---|---|
| Signing in to an existing GST account | User ID, password, or CAPTCHA rejected | Re-enter the registered credentials and the CAPTCHA exactly as displayed; do not share them. |
| New registration or enrolment | Email or mobile code missing, expired, or rejected | Check which channel received each code, use the portal’s resend option, and enter the newest code for each channel. |
| Aadhaar authentication during registration | Authentication link or Aadhaar OTP not completed | Follow the recipient and resend instructions in the Aadhaar workflow and complete the stated verification window. |
| Final filing of GSTR-3B | “OTP is either expired or incorrect” or “Your OTP is expired please try again” | Generate a fresh EVC OTP and enter it promptly; GSTN’s known-issue entry gives a 10-minute validity period for this EVC. |
| Preparing or uploading GSTR-1 | Invoice rejected, upload error file, or summary unavailable | Validate the recipient GSTIN and invoice date, download the error report, correct the data, and generate the summary when the portal permits. |
| Submitting a return | Filing button unavailable or return remains unfiled | Check the selected period, required earlier returns, summary, authorized signatory, and final status. |
GSTN’s GST Portal – Known Issues & Suggested Solutions describes the GSTR-3B EVC expiry message and sequential filing advice. The normal-taxpayer registration guide and Aadhaar Authentication FAQ cover registration-specific recipients and steps.

Fix a GST Portal login or credential rejection
A valid login is a prerequisite for return preparation. Start on the official GST Portal, select the appropriate user type, and use the user ID and password created for that account. Then type the CAPTCHA as shown on the current screen. A password that works for another user, an old provisional credential, or a CAPTCHA copied incorrectly will not authenticate the session.
Step-by-step login check
- Confirm that you are on the GST Portal and that the GSTIN or user profile you intend to use is the one shown in your records.
- Enter the exact user ID associated with that profile. Check for leading or trailing spaces and for confusion between similar characters.
- Type the password again rather than relying on an autofill value saved for a different account.
- Re-enter the CAPTCHA exactly as displayed and submit once.
- If the portal offers a password-reset or resend route, use the registered contact channel and follow that workflow instead of trying unrelated OTP screens.
Do not assume that clearing a browser cache, installing a cleanup utility, or changing browsers is an official cure for an authentication failure. The GSTN material cited here does not establish any of those actions as a universal fix. If the same credentials fail after careful re-entry, record the exact message and time and use GSTN support.
Protect the account while troubleshooting
GSTN’s enrolment guidance warns: “No government department or official would ask for your account credentials or OTP details.” Never give a password, security answer, or OTP to a caller, chat contact, or person claiming to be an official. If you think someone else accessed the account, change the password through the official portal and report suspected unauthorized activity to the GST Helpdesk. Do not continue experimenting with codes while another person may be viewing them.
Resolve registration and enrolment OTP problems
Registration can generate separate codes for email and mobile. GSTN’s Enrolment of Existing Taxpayer with Provisional ID and Password guidance explains that the two channels may receive distinct OTPs. An email code that is absent does not mean the mobile code is wrong, and entering the mobile code in the email field will fail.

When one or both codes are missing
- Check the email address and mobile number displayed or entered in the registration transaction. Verify that the phone has service and that the mailbox has capacity.
- Inspect the email spam, junk, promotions, and quarantine folders. Search for GSTN messages rather than relying only on a notification banner.
- Use the portal’s Resend action once the resend control becomes available. A newly issued code supersedes an older one for that transaction.
- Enter the newest email code in the email field and the newest mobile code in the mobile field, if the screen requests both.
- If the portal shows an expiration or invalid-code message, request another pair and stop trying the earlier pair.
Do not keep submitting an older OTP after requesting a replacement. This can make it difficult to tell whether the problem is delivery, expiry, or a mistyped code. Capture the transaction reference or temporary reference number shown by the portal before contacting support.
Aadhaar authentication is a separate path
Aadhaar authentication during registration has its own recipient and authentication-link instructions. Follow the process in GSTN’s FAQs – Aadhaar Authentication rather than applying the GSTR-3B EVC rule. The Aadhaar FAQ states a 15-day verification window after the applicable registration submission or TRN process; GSTN does not state a publication date for that figure, so check the live portal instructions in case the procedure changes.
If an Aadhaar link is not completed within the displayed window, return to the registration transaction and use the current resend or authentication option shown there. A registration OTP and an Aadhaar OTP can have different recipients and timing, so ask the portal to issue the code for the exact step you are on.
Fix an expired or incorrect OTP when filing a return
For the GSTR-3B EVC known issue, GSTN states that the EVC OTP is valid for only 10 minutes. Its suggested solution is: “As the EVC OTP is valid for only 10 minutes, you are advised to re-generate the OTP and fill in the latest OTP received through SMS/E-Mail.” The same entry identifies an incorrectly entered code as another cause of the error messages “OTP is either expired or incorrect” and “Your OTP is expired please try again.”

Use a fresh GSTR-3B EVC
- Remain on the final GSTR-3B filing screen and confirm that the return summary is the period you intend to file.
- Choose the EVC filing option and request a new OTP.
- Wait for the new SMS or email, then enter that latest code carefully. Do not use a code from an earlier request.
- Submit within the stated 10-minute EVC validity period.
- If the message persists, request one more fresh code and verify every digit before submission. Record the exact error if the second current code also fails.
The 10-minute figure is specifically attached to the GSTR-3B filing EVC entry in GSTN’s known-issues guide. It is not a universal expiry rule for every GST OTP, registration code, or Aadhaar authentication message. Use the timing displayed in the workflow you are actually completing.
Choose EVC or DSC for the right reason
GSTN’s GSTR3B – File Nil Return instructions show both Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) and EVC as filing methods, subject to the taxpayer and form requirements. A USB DSC token for GST filing is relevant only when you are using the DSC route and have a valid certificate installed and registered. Buying a token will not repair a rejected password, a missing registration OTP, or a portal-side outage. If EVC is available for your filing and you can receive the current code, it may be the simpler authentication method.
Correct GSTR-1 upload, invoice, and summary errors
GSTR-1 problems are often data-validation or sequencing issues rather than account-authentication failures. GSTN’s FAQs > Form GSTR-1 and its offline-upload guidance identify several checks.

Recipient GSTIN is invalid or inactive
Verify the recipient’s GSTIN before uploading. The GSTN FAQ says validation can fail when the recipient GSTIN is invalid or was not active on the invoice date. Check the number digit by digit and confirm that the recipient’s registration status covered the date of the invoice. A currently active GSTIN does not by itself prove that it was active on an earlier invoice date.

Use the error file instead of guessing
- Complete the invoice data in the portal, the GST Returns Offline Tool, or an ASP application connected through a GSP.
- Upload the generated JSON or submit the entered records using the route you selected.
- If GSTN creates an error file, download it from the upload-results area before making another submission.
- Read each listed field and record-level error, correct the source data in the offline tool or preparation system, and generate a new JSON file.
- Upload the corrected file and check whether the portal accepts it before moving to summary generation.
An error report points to data that needs correction; it is not evidence that a DSC token or a new login session will solve the issue. Keep the original file and the corrected version so you can identify which change removed the validation failure.
Generate the GSTR-1 summary at the permitted time
After invoice details are accepted, generate the GSTR-1 summary. GSTN’s FAQ notes that summary generation is rate-limited by an interval and that the system generates summaries periodically. If the portal tells you to wait, do not repeatedly click the control; allow the stated interval to pass, then try once. A missing summary can therefore be a timing state rather than a rejected invoice.
Understand preparation-route choices
| Preparation route | Useful when | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Direct entry on the GST Portal | You have a manageable number of records and want portal validation as you enter them. | It does not bypass GSTN validation or a portal outage. |
| GST Returns Offline Tool | You need to prepare records locally and upload a JSON file, especially for larger data sets. | It does not make an invalid or inactive recipient GSTIN acceptable. |
| ASP software through a GSP | Your business already uses an integrated preparation workflow. | The route is not proof that a vendor can repair a GSTN authentication or service problem. |
These are preparation options listed in GSTN’s GSTR-1 FAQ, not guarantees of uninterrupted service or a substitute for checking the official error file.

Check the period and filing sequence
- Confirm that the selected GSTIN, return form, financial period, and tax period are correct.
- Review whether required earlier returns remain unfiled. GSTN’s GSTR-1 FAQ states that GSTR-3B for a period cannot be filed if GSTR-1 for that same period is unfiled.
- Where prior periods are outstanding, file them sequentially as advised in GSTN’s known-issues material rather than jumping to a later period.
- Return to the target period only after the prerequisite status updates on the portal.
The same-period GSTR-1 prerequisite explains why a valid login and a correct EVC can still leave the GSTR-3B filing action unavailable.
Review, sign, and verify the final status
- Open the return summary and check figures, liability, and the selected period before signing.
- Select the correct authorized signatory. An account can contain more than one user, and the person signing must be authorized for that taxpayer.
- Choose DSC or EVC according to the method available for the form and taxpayer.
- Complete the authentication and wait for the portal response.
- Confirm that the return status changes to Filed. Download and retain the filed return or acknowledgement.
A generated preview, saved draft, or completed summary is not proof that filing succeeded. The status and retained filing record are the evidence you need for your records.
A practical diagnostic checklist
- Write down the exact error text, form, period, and screen where it appeared.
- Identify whether the failed action is login, registration, Aadhaar authentication, EVC filing, data upload, summary generation, or final submission.
- Use the registered email or mobile channel for that workflow and request a fresh code when the portal offers resend.
- Enter only the newest OTP; do not reuse a code requested before the latest resend.
- For GSTR-1, verify recipient GSTIN status on the invoice date and download any generated error report.
- For a blocked return, check same-period and earlier-period filing prerequisites before changing authentication methods.
- After submission, verify the status is Filed and save the acknowledgement or filed-return download.

Contact the GST helpdesk when the current credentials are carefully entered, the newest code is used in the correct workflow, and the portal still rejects the action; when an error file does not identify a fix; when a prerequisite status has not updated after the required filing; or when you suspect unauthorized access. Provide the GSTIN, user ID (but never the password), form and period, transaction or ARN, timestamp, exact message, and the steps already completed. Mask OTPs and security answers in every screenshot or email.
For questions about whether a transaction should be reported, the tax treatment of an invoice, or a legal filing obligation, use a qualified tax professional. Portal support can explain a technical status or workflow; it cannot replace professional advice on your tax position.
