Most GST Portal failures can be traced to one of five stages: preparing the JSON, portal validation, summary processing, digital signing, or return submission. Match the message to its stage before changing anything. For Processed with Error, download the error report, correct the named rows in the current Returns Offline Tool, regenerate the JSON and upload again. For File could not be uploaded, validate the file against the current GSTR-1 schema and correct missing or malformed fields. Do not edit generated JSON by hand.
Identify the failure stage first
The same invoice can appear to fail for different reasons depending on when the portal stops processing it. Use the status or message to choose the remedy.

| What you see | Where the failure occurs | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Processed with Error | Portal processed the upload but rejected one or more rows | Generate the error report and correct every listed row in the current Returns Offline Tool |
| File could not be uploaded | File or schema validation before normal processing | Validate the JSON against the current GSTR-1 schema; fix required fields and regenerate |
| Invoices uploaded but tile count is unchanged | GSTR-1 summary has not been generated or is still processing | Use GENERATE GSTR1 SUMMARY and allow processing time |
| DSC authentication or emSigner error | Signing and identity verification | Check PAN, signatory, certificate validity, emSigner and the dongle |
| Your previous GSTR3B filing request is still in progress | Duplicate or unfinished nil-filing request | Wait at least 10 minutes, then restart from the Returns Dashboard |

Fix “Processed with Error” after a GSTR-1 upload
“Processed with Error” does not mean the entire return is lost. It means the portal accepted the upload for processing and identified one or more invalid records. GSTN’s Returns Offline Tool guide says the Error Report column will display a Generate error report link after processing completes.
#1 Best Overall
Step-by-step recovery
- Open the GSTR-1 upload area and wait until the upload status has finished processing.
- In the row showing Processed with Error, select Generate error report. GSTN guidance indicates that the report is downloaded as a ZIP file; the link can take approximately 15 minutes to appear.
- Open the downloaded ZIP and load the error report directly in the current GST Returns Offline Tool.
- Review every row and column identified by the report. Fix all listed errors, not only the first one displayed.
- Correct the underlying invoice data in the offline tool, regenerate the JSON and upload the new file.
- Keep the error report and the corrected source workbook until the portal shows a successful result.
Do not open the generated JSON in a text editor and change values manually. A hand edit can break the schema or leave the source data inconsistent. Make the correction in the current offline tool and generate a fresh file.
Checks that commonly clear the reported rows
- Confirm that the supplier GSTIN in the file is exactly the GSTIN of the taxpayer currently logged in.
- Check that each invoice date is on or after the supplier’s GST registration date.
- Look for repeated invoice numbers and duplicate supply records.
- For amendments, verify that the original invoice already exists on the portal and can be searched.
- Check required classification fields, including UQC where the error report identifies it.
Fix “File could not be uploaded” with schema validation
This message generally occurs before the portal can process invoice rows. The usual causes are an outdated offline tool, a JSON generated from an old schema, malformed syntax, or a missing required property. GSTN’s known-issues procedure recommends validating the JSON against the current GSTR-1 schema using the GST developer API schema and a JSON validator.
Correct procedure
- Download the latest GST Returns Offline Tool and the current GSTR-1 schema from the official GST resources available to you.
- Open the JSON validator and select the schema that matches the return type and current portal version.
- Validate the generated JSON before uploading. Record the exact property name and row identified by the validator.
- Open the source data in the current offline tool and supply the missing or invalid value. GSTN’s example is a missing UQC in an HSN section, which produces a required-property error.
- Regenerate the JSON from the corrected source data.
- Validate the new file again, then upload it through GSTR-1.
A file can pass local syntax validation and still be rejected for business rules such as an incorrect GSTIN, an invoice date before registration, or a duplicate invoice. Treat schema validation as the first check, not proof that the records are acceptable.

Typical validation symptoms
- Required property missing: enter the named field in the offline tool, such as UQC, and regenerate.
- Invalid GSTIN or UIN: check the number of characters, structure and whether the value belongs in that field. The portal uses “Enter valid GSTIN/UIN” for invalid values or structures.
- Unexpected or malformed JSON: regenerate with the current tool instead of repairing punctuation or brackets manually.
- Old schema or tool: update both before trying another upload because portal rules and field definitions change.
Resolve GSTIN, invoice-date, duplicate and amendment errors
Supplier GSTIN does not match the login
The supplier GSTIN embedded in the upload must be the GSTIN of the taxpayer whose account is open. This error often occurs when a multi-GSTIN business exports data for one registration and uploads it while logged into another. Switch to the correct registration or regenerate the file for the active GSTIN.

Invoice date predates GST registration
GSTN rejects an invoice date earlier than the supplier’s GST registration date. Compare the date in the source record with the effective registration date, correct the source transaction if it was entered incorrectly and regenerate the JSON. Do not simply change the date to make the upload pass if the commercial invoice itself is wrong; correct the accounting record and retain an audit trail.
“Enter valid GSTIN/UIN”
Check for transposed characters, extra spaces, an incorrect state-code prefix or a GSTIN entered in a UIN field (or vice versa). Re-enter the value in the offline tool and regenerate the file. A value that looks plausible is not enough if its format is invalid.
Duplicate supply invoice
GSTR-1 does not accept duplicate supply invoices. Search the relevant section and period before re-uploading. If the invoice is already present, do not submit it again; determine whether you need an amendment instead. If the duplicate was created in the source system, remove the extra row and regenerate.

“Original Invoice cannot be tracked” during an amendment
An amendment must point to an original invoice that the portal can locate. Search the original invoice using the same period, invoice number, date and recipient details used when it was first uploaded. If it is absent, upload the original record first, wait for it to process, and then submit the amendment. If the original is present but not found, compare every reference field for differences in punctuation, leading zeros and date format.

Invoices uploaded but not visible in GSTR-1
An upload can be accepted while the visible invoice count remains unchanged. GSTRN’s GSTR-1 guidance requires a summary-generation request before the tile counts and summary view update.
- Open the relevant GSTR-1 period.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page.
- Select GENERATE GSTR1 SUMMARY.
- Wait for the portal to process the request, then refresh or reopen the return.
Summary requests are interval-limited. A repeat request within 10 minutes can produce an error, and automatic processing may take longer than the button click. Do not keep submitting the same request while it is pending; first confirm whether the previous request has completed.
When to investigate the data itself
- If the summary completes but the invoice is still absent, check that it was uploaded under the correct GSTIN, return period and invoice section.
- Review the upload status for a later Processed with Error result and generate its report if necessary.
- Confirm that the invoice was not rejected as a duplicate or because its date predates registration.
Fix DSC, emSigner and EVC filing failures
Digital-signature problems are local setup and identity problems, not JSON errors. GSTN’s GSTR-1 FAQ states that the portal accepts PAN-based DSCs only.

- The certificate must be PAN-based, registered on the GST Portal and unexpired.
- The certificate must belong to the authorized signatory selected in the filing screen.
- The required current emSigner version must be installed and running.
- The DSC dongle must be connected and recognized by the computer.
- The signatory’s PAN and the certificate’s PAN must match exactly.
After correcting a certificate or signatory registration, close and reopen emSigner, reconnect the dongle and restart the signing step. If the certificate has expired, renew and register it before attempting authentication.

Authentication error RT-3BAS1031
GSTN’s known-issues examples identify Authentication has failed at emas (RT-3BAS1031) as a case that generally occurs when the DSC certificate is associated with a PAN different from the selected signatory. Select the signatory whose PAN matches the certificate, then retry. If no matching signatory appears, update the authorized-signatory registration rather than repeatedly entering the PIN.
Use EVC when it is permitted
Electronic Verification Code (EVC) is an alternative only for filing actions and taxpayer categories for which the portal allows it. GSTN sends the OTP to the authorized signatory’s registered email address and mobile number. If EVC is unavailable, confirm that both contact details are current and that the correct signatory is selected; changing browsers will not bypass an eligibility or registration problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Clear “Your previous GSTR3B filing request is still in progress”
For a nil GSTR-3B filing, GSTN advises waiting at least 10 minutes before retrying this message. The delay prevents duplicate submissions while the previous request is being recorded.
- Stop clicking the filing or submit button.
- Wait at least 10 minutes from the original request.
- Return to the Returns Dashboard.
- Select the financial year and return period again.
- Restart the nil-filing flow once, using the available verification method.
If the status remains unchanged after the waiting period, capture the message, period and request time for escalation. Do not create parallel requests in multiple tabs.

Fix IFF and e-invoice validation errors
IFF “Error in submission”
An Invoice Furnishing Facility submission can fail when the cumulative value of records reported exceeds the applicable limit. GSTN’s guidance is to remove some records from the current submission and report them in the next permitted period. Recalculate the cumulative value before retrying so the revised file stays within the limit.
Invalid HSN code 2176
The IRIS IRP troubleshooting guidance lists error 2176 for an invalid HSN code. Recheck the code against the current HSN requirements and the product description used in your accounting records. Correct the source item master or invoice row, regenerate the e-invoice data and submit again. HSN validation rules can change, so use the current IRP rules rather than an old saved list.
30-day e-invoice reporting window
For taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover of ₹10 crore or more, IRIS IRP records a rule effective 1 April 2025 requiring e-invoices to be reported within 30 days of the invoice date. A late attempt can therefore fail even when the JSON structure is correct. Check the invoice date, turnover category and reporting deadline before troubleshooting software.
February 2026 RSP-based validation relaxation
IRIS IRP also records a February 2026 relaxation for specified retail-selling-price (RSP)-based value validations. The relaxation applies only to the specified cases; it does not suspend other HSN, date, registration or reporting-window checks. Confirm that the transaction actually falls within the stated scope before relying on it.
Prepare an escalation file when self-service fixes fail
Escalate only after reproducing the error with the current tool and schema. Include:
- Exact error text and code, including capitalization.
- GSTIN, financial year, return period and relevant invoice number.
- Date and time of each upload or filing attempt.
- Offline-tool and schema versions used.
- The downloaded error-report ZIP or validator output.
- A screenshot of the portal status and, for DSC issues, the selected signatory name.
- Whether the same file failed after regeneration and whether the failure occurred before or after summary generation.
Remove passwords, DSC PINs, full bank details and unrelated customer information before sharing logs. Keep the original files unchanged so the corrected version can be compared with the rejected one.
Quick Recap
Prevent repeat GST Portal errors
- Update the Returns Offline Tool and download the current schema before each filing cycle.
- Run local validation before uploading a large batch.
- Maintain one source record for each invoice and a control check for duplicate invoice numbers.
- Keep registration-effective dates in the accounting master so pre-registration invoices are flagged before export.
- Use the GSTIN of the active portal login when exporting a file.
- Upload original invoices before attempting amendments and retain the original invoice reference.
- Allow processing time after uploads and summary requests instead of repeatedly clicking submit.
- Check DSC expiry, PAN association, authorized-signatory registration and emSigner before the filing deadline.
- Record the upload status and error report for every batch.
- Check current GSTN and IRP advisories because portal screens, tool versions, schemas, error codes and validation rules change.
