Live sports are less forgiving than on-demand video because playback must keep receiving new data while the event is happening. DAZN Help explains that “Live-streaming sports events needs a faster internet download speed than something that‘s been pre-recorded and available on-demand.” That is an official service statement, not a universal measured threshold. A speed test by itself cannot tell you whether the cause is bandwidth, Wi-Fi interference, an overloaded home network, an outdated app, an unsupported device, an internet-service problem, or an outage at the streaming service.

Why does my live stream keep buffering or running behind?
“Buffering” means the player pauses while it gathers more video data. A stream can also drop to a blurry resolution, stutter, freeze on one frame, or continue playing while remaining noticeably behind the live action. Those symptoms can have different causes, so note exactly what you see before changing settings.

Check scope as well as symptoms. If every app on one television fails, the device or its local connection is more likely involved. If several devices fail at the same time, investigate the router, internet service, or a wider outage. If only one service fails while other live video works, its support team needs to investigate.

Use the streaming service’s own speed guidance
There is no single speed number that guarantees smooth live sports everywhere. Providers publish different thresholds for different resolutions, regions, and numbers of simultaneous viewers. Treat the following as dated, attributed examples, not interchangeable minimums.

Compare like with like: service and geography, resolution tier, one stream versus several devices, and the result at the actual viewing location. A high headline speed measured next to the router does not prove that the television in another room is receiving a stable connection. Conversely, a brief low result during a household download may not represent your normal service.
A six-step fix for buffering and lag
1. Identify the symptom, event and scope
- Write down the sport, league, event and start time.
- Record whether the problem is pausing, quality drops, freezing, stutter, or a consistent delay behind the live action.
- Try a different event in the same service, then a different streaming app on the same device.
- If possible, try the same service on another supported device. ESPN recommends testing another app and another device; TVNZ+ also advises checking for known issues.
This simple comparison prevents an expensive plan or equipment purchase when the fault is limited to one app, event feed, or device.
2. Measure the connection where you watch
- Run a speed test on the television, streaming box, phone, or computer that is actually playing the game. If the device has no test tool, run the test in the same room on a phone connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Test during the buffering episode, not only at a quiet time.
- Compare the result with the service-specific table above and with the quality you selected. Keep the test result, time and connection type for support.
Speed is only one part of quality. A result that briefly meets a provider’s number can still accompany packet loss or interruptions. The reviewed provider pages do not establish a universal latency setting or a cross-service percentage of streams that buffer, so do not treat either as a guaranteed pass/fail test.

3. Test the local Wi-Fi path
- Move the viewing device temporarily closer to the router, with fewer walls or large appliances between them.
- If the device and router have suitable ports, connect them with Ethernet and replay the same event.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, video calls and other streams while testing.
- Ask other household users to stop high-bandwidth activity for a few minutes, then compare playback.
If the closer or wired test is clearly better, Wi-Fi coverage, interference or household congestion is contributing. That result does not prove the streaming provider or internet service is faultless; it tells you where to focus next. NFL+, TVNZ+, Sling and NOW all mention a wired connection as a troubleshooting option.
4. Restart the network and viewing equipment
- Close the streaming app and turn off the viewing device.
- Restart the modem and router using the equipment maker’s normal procedure.
- Wait for the network indicators to show that service has returned. NBA’s support guidance says to wait one to two minutes when resetting the network; other providers publish different power-cycle sequences, so follow the instructions for your device and service.
- Turn the viewing device back on, reconnect it, reopen the app and test the same event.
A restart clears temporary software and connection states. It will not repair a damaged cable, a weak wireless location, a provider outage or an unsupported operating system, so continue through the remaining checks if the symptom returns.
5. Verify app, operating-system and device support
- Check the service’s current supported-device and operating-system list for your model.
- Install pending firmware, operating-system and app updates.
- Force-close the app rather than merely switching away from it, then reopen it.
- If the service still fails, sign out and back in or reinstall the app, provided you know your credentials and any downloaded settings will not be lost.
- Test a supported browser or another supported device. If only one app remains faulty, contact that app’s support team rather than replacing your network equipment.
Support pages and device lists change. NBA and NOW pages were recently updated in 2026, ESPN guidance cited here dates to 2025, and older instructions may no longer match current menus. Use the labels shown on your device today.

- Sport, league and exact event
- Date and local time, including time zone if relevant
- Device manufacturer, model and operating-system version
- App name and version or browser and platform
- Country or region and viewing location
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection
- Speed-test result taken during the problem
- Error message, on-screen code or screenshot
- Whether another app or device worked
- Every restart, update, reinstall or wired test already attempted
NBA’s support guidance specifically requests several of these details. If measured speeds remain consistently below the applicable service guidance after local checks, give the same record to your internet provider. Ask the streaming service whether it has a known incident before assuming your home network is at fault.
Why buffering can happen even when your internet speed seems fine
The test was taken in the wrong place or at the wrong time
Your plan’s advertised speed is normally measured at the modem or by the provider, while playback depends on the connection at the viewing device. A test beside the router may hide a weak signal in a distant room. A test taken after the event may miss evening congestion. Repeat the measurement during the failure and in the room where you watch.
Other devices consume the available capacity
The number shown by a speed test is shared by phones, televisions, consoles, cameras, computers and smart-home equipment. A single stream may work until a large upload or several simultaneous streams begin. Pause those activities for a controlled retry. If playback returns, schedule backups and updates outside major games or separate them from the viewing device where your router allows.
Wireless quality is unstable
Distance, walls, interference and crowded wireless channels can cause brief interruptions even when an occasional speed test looks healthy. The closer-position and Ethernet comparison is more informative than buying equipment immediately. A consistent improvement when wired points to the wireless path; no improvement suggests you should investigate the service, device or internet connection next.

The app, device or event feed is the problem
An outdated app, unsupported operating system or faulty event stream can mimic a network fault. Another app and another device provide a practical control test. If only one event or service fails while others play normally, preserve your notes and escalate with the event details rather than changing your entire home setup.

Cat6 Ethernet cable: a targeted test
A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a sensible, relatively low-cost accessory when your viewing device and router both have compatible ports and you can route the cable safely. Use it first as a diagnostic: connect, replay the same event and compare. If the wired result is stable, you have evidence that Wi-Fi coverage or interference deserves attention. If the cable changes nothing, return to the service, device and ISP checks. Confirm port types, cable length and placement before purchasing; a cable cannot fix a provider outage or an unsupported app.
Router or mesh Wi-Fi system: only for a demonstrated coverage problem
Consider a router or mesh system only after the closer-device test, wired comparison and congestion checks show that distance or home coverage is the limiting factor. Check compatibility with your modem and internet provider, the size and construction of your home, available wired backhaul and the locations where you need coverage. The troubleshooting evidence identifies distance and network conditions as possible causes, but it does not establish that any particular model or purchase is necessary.

Faster internet service: upgrade only after measurement
An upgrade is reasonable when your measured speed at the viewing device remains below the relevant service guidance during normal household use, or when your household needs more simultaneous streams than the current plan can sustain. Ask the ISP about recurring price, equipment rental, installation, data caps and contract terms. Do not upgrade solely because one event buffered if a wired or closer test, app update or provider outage explains the incident.

A practical spending checklist
- Keep screenshots of the test that demonstrated the problem.
- Try the no-cost controls first: pause competing use, move closer, restart, update and test another device.
- Buy a cable only when both endpoints and a safe route are available.
- Price the full recurring cost of a router, mesh system or faster plan, including rental and installation, not just the advertised headline price.
- Use the provider’s return policy if a conditional equipment test does not improve playback.
Service-specific cautions and changing guidance
Official instructions are not permanent specifications. NFL+ guidance cited here is from 2026; Sling and TVNZ+ pages were accessed in 2026; ESPN’s cited page is from 2025; and the DAZN statement is from a page about 2.6 years old at the time it was reviewed. Supported devices, app steps, quality tiers and outage information can change by region and edition. Recheck the service’s current help page when an instruction conflicts with the menus or requirements you see.
Do not combine one provider’s number with another provider’s quality label. For example, a figure published for one HD stream cannot be used as a guarantee for several 4K devices in another household. The meaningful comparison is always the same service, quality tier, number of viewers and measured conditions at the device.
When the stream is still behind after it stops buffering
A delay behind the live action is not automatically a bandwidth failure. Live platforms may introduce delivery and playback delay, and a service can remain behind while playing smoothly. Compare the same event on another supported app or device and check whether the provider reports a known incident. If only one service is delayed, provide the event, device, platform, region and time to that provider. If every service on every device is delayed or repeatedly stalls, document the network tests and involve the ISP after local checks.
