How to Fix an EPFO Pension Stopped for a Missing Life Certificate

By TheFinanceBase Team 9 min read

If your Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) pension stopped because you missed a life-certificate update, submit a current certificate as soon as possible, keep the acknowledgement or Pramaan ID, check your record on the EPFO Pensioners’ Portal, and contact EPFO if payment remains stopped. You can use Jeevan Pramaan from a supported smartphone or submit through a bank, Common Service Centre (CSC), EPFO office, postal service, or another listed channel.

EPFO’s published material does not set a universal number of days for restarting a stopped pension or a single arrears procedure. Your individual case must therefore be confirmed through the pension-status enquiry or EPFO’s help and grievance channels.

First, confirm that the stoppage is related to the life certificate

Check your Pension Payment Order (PPO), bank statement, previous Jeevan Pramaan acknowledgement, or other receipt for the month in which your last life certificate was accepted. Also check whether any unrelated issue—such as a bank-account change, incorrect PPO details, or a payment-disbursing problem—is affecting the pension.

Once the certificate date and the reason for stoppage match, proceed with a new submission. Keep your PPO number, Aadhaar details used for authentication, pensioner name, date of birth, and the name of the pension-disbursing agency available. Use the details exactly as they appear in the pension record; mismatches can delay the agency’s ability to locate the certificate.

When an EPS life certificate becomes overdue

For an EPS pensioner, EPFO says the life certificate must be updated within one year of the previous submission. The relevant month is tied to the month in which the last certificate was submitted, rather than to a universal calendar deadline. If the pensioner also fails to submit in the same month of the following year, EPFO’s 21 June 2024 circular says that “pension would be stopped from the succeeding month.”

For example, if the last accepted certificate was submitted in March, the next update is due within one year of that submission. Missing the corresponding month in the next year can result in the pension being stopped from the following month. The November deadline often mentioned in other pension guidance should not be substituted for the EPS rule described by EPFO.

The circular also records a historical backlog: 449,288 life certificates had been pending for more than three years as of 19 June 2023. That figure is a dated historical count, not a current estimate of pending certificates.

How to restart the pension after missing the certificate

  1. Gather the pension record. Locate the PPO number, the last certificate acknowledgement if available, the pensioner’s Aadhaar-linked authentication details, and the name of the pension-paying bank or other disbursing agency.
  2. Choose an accepted submission route. Use Jeevan Pramaan with face authentication if a supported smartphone is available, or select a CSC, pension-disbursing bank, EPFO office, IPPB or post office, postman or banking-alliance home service, or UMANG. The practical choice depends on whether the pensioner can travel and whether assistance is needed.
  3. Submit a current certificate. Follow the selected service’s identity and life-status authentication process. Review the PPO and personal details before final submission.
  4. Save proof immediately. For Jeevan Pramaan, retain the SMS acknowledgement and Pramaan ID and download or print a copy if the service offers it. For an in-person or assisted route, request a receipt or transaction reference and record the date, location, operator or bank branch, and any reference number.
  5. Check whether EPFO has recorded the update. Use the enquiry options on EPFO’s Pensioners’ Portal to review pension status and payment information. A certificate acknowledgement proves submission, but the portal or the disbursing agency must confirm that it has been matched to the pension record.
  6. Escalate an unresolved stoppage. If the certificate is valid but payment remains stopped, contact EPFO through its official help route or attend a Nidhi Aapke Nikat camp. Give the representative your PPO details, certificate acknowledgement or Pramaan ID, submission date, and the pension-paying agency’s information. EPFO’s pensioner portal lists 14470 for assistance and describes these camps as providing grievance redressal and support.

Which submission method should you use?

Route Authentication and assistance Travel Proof to retain
Jeevan Pramaan on a smartphone Face authentication through the phone camera; the pensioner completes the process with on-screen guidance. Can be completed from home when the device, app and authentication work. Jeevan Pramaan SMS acknowledgement and Pramaan ID; a certificate copy may also be downloaded.
Common Service Centre (CSC) An operator provides the assisted generation service and handles the available biometric or face-authentication workflow. Travel to a CSC is normally required. Keep the generated acknowledgement or reference supplied by the centre.
Pension-disbursing bank Bank staff or the bank’s approved service handles the certificate process; the exact equipment and procedure vary by branch. Usually requires a branch visit unless the bank offers an eligible home service. Ask for a receipt or transaction reference and record the branch and submission date.
EPFO office Staff-assisted submission or help with a pension-record issue. Office visit required. Obtain a written acknowledgement or inward reference where available.
IPPB or post office Postal staff provide an available generation or submission service. Visit the participating location unless a home option is available. Retain the postal receipt or service reference.
Postman or banking-alliance home service A visiting service may assist at home where offered in the pensioner’s area. May avoid travel; availability is location-dependent. Request a service acknowledgement and note the agent’s details.
UMANG Use the pension-related service shown in the current app; available functions can change. Can be remote when the required service is enabled for the pension record. Save any confirmation number or screen record provided by the service.

EPFO’s Citizen Charter lists these routes, but it does not state that one route restores a stopped pension faster than another. Select the route that gives you a usable acknowledgement and the best chance of completing authentication correctly.

Submitting Jeevan Pramaan from home with a smartphone

EPFO’s July–September 2025 newsletter says EPS pensioners can submit Jeevan Pramaan without visiting an EPFO office or bank and describes the smartphone service as completely free. The mobile face-authentication option uses the phone’s camera and does not require a separate biometric device.

Check the device and app requirements

  • The current Jeevan Pramaan app page lists Android 10 or later and iOS 14 or later for the mobile applications.
  • The phone needs a functioning front-facing camera and enough battery to complete the identity and face-authentication process.
  • Use the official app listing and current on-screen instructions. App names, permissions and screens can change, so do not rely on an old installation guide.
  • If the pensioner cannot use a supported phone or the face scan repeatedly fails, switch to a CSC, bank, EPFO office, postal route or another accepted channel rather than delaying the certificate.

General submission sequence

  1. Install or open the current Jeevan Pramaan application and choose the face-authentication life-certificate service.
  2. Enter the pension and identity information requested by the app, including the PPO and disbursing-agency details. Check spelling and numbers before continuing.
  3. Complete the Aadhaar-based identity and face-authentication prompts. Position the face in the camera frame, use even lighting, remove anything that obscures the face, and follow the movement or stillness instructions shown by the app.
  4. Submit the certificate only after the app displays a successful generation message. A partially completed form or a camera scan that ends without confirmation is not proof of submission.
  5. Save the SMS acknowledgement and Pramaan ID. Write the identifier down as well as storing the message, because it is the key reference when asking the pension-disbursing agency to locate the certificate.

If the phone method does not work

  • Camera or face scan failure: clean the lens, move to brighter but indirect light, keep the phone steady, and remove hats, masks or dark glasses if the app instructs you to do so. If repeated attempts fail, use an assisted route.
  • Unsupported operating system: do not install an unverified package or assume an older phone will work. Use another supported device already available to the family or submit through a CSC, bank, EPFO or postal channel.
  • Details rejected: compare the PPO, name and agency information with the pension record. Ask the disbursing agency or EPFO to correct a record mismatch instead of repeatedly submitting different spellings.
  • No acknowledgement: treat the certificate as unconfirmed until the app, SMS or service operator supplies a reference. Record the time and seek help from the channel used.

Using an assisted or in-person route

A CSC is useful when the pensioner needs an operator to manage the device and authentication. A pension-paying bank or EPFO office is preferable when the problem may involve the pension record itself, because staff can help identify the disbursing account or PPO issue while taking the certificate.

IPPB, post offices, postmen and banking-alliance home services can help pensioners who cannot easily reach a branch, but availability depends on the area and the participating service. Ask in advance what identification, PPO information and receipt the operator requires. UMANG may provide a remote option where the relevant pension service is enabled, but the current menu should be checked at the time of submission.

Before leaving an in-person appointment, verify that the acknowledgement shows the correct pensioner, PPO and submission date. Keep the original receipt and a photograph or photocopy in a safe place.

How to verify that EPFO has received the certificate

Jeevan Pramaan says the certificate is stored so the pension-disbursing agency can access it, and the service sends an SMS acknowledgement containing a Pramaan ID. That acknowledgement confirms the digital submission, but it does not by itself establish that a stopped payment has already been released.

  1. Wait until the service has produced a successful acknowledgement rather than relying on an unfinished screen.
  2. Use the Pramaan ID or other receipt when checking the pension record.
  3. Open EPFO’s Pensioners’ Portal and use its pension-status and payment-enquiry options.
  4. Compare the portal result with your bank statement and note the date of every enquiry.
  5. If the portal does not show the certificate or the payment remains stopped, contact EPFO or attend a Nidhi Aapke Nikat camp with the complete evidence file.

Restart dates and arrears: what is—and is not—promised

The official material establishes the certificate deadline and the available submission routes, but it does not promise a fixed restart time after a late certificate is accepted. It also does not set out one universal arrears schedule for every pensioner whose payments stopped.

Do not assume that a successful submission means the next payment will arrive on a particular date, or that every missed instalment will be credited automatically. Ask EPFO or the pension-disbursing agency to confirm three separate points: whether the certificate is matched to the PPO, whether the pension has been reactivated, and how any past instalments will be handled in your case.

When escalating, state the exact month in which payment stopped, the date and route of the new certificate, the Pramaan ID or receipt number, and the result shown by the pension-status enquiry. This gives the officer a complete timeline without requiring you to resubmit the same certificate repeatedly.

Common mistakes that prolong a stoppage

  • Using the wrong deadline: applying a November rule from another pension arrangement instead of counting from the last EPS certificate submission.
  • Submitting without recording proof: closing the app or leaving a service centre without the Pramaan ID, receipt or date.
  • Entering a different PPO or agency detail: a certificate can be difficult to match when the pension information does not correspond to the EPFO record.
  • Assuming a historical drive is still active: a 2024 special initiative cannot be treated as a standing home-visit service.
  • Making repeated untracked submissions: multiple attempts without references make it harder to identify which certificate was accepted. Record each attempt and use the first confirmed acknowledgement when escalating.
  • Waiting for an automatic restart: check the pension-status enquiry after submission and contact EPFO if the record or payment does not change.

What the 2024 special drive means for today’s pensioner

EPFO’s 21 June 2024 circular described a one-month initiative beginning 20 June 2024 in which newly recruited Social Security Assistants helped facilitate updates for long-pending certificates. It was a dated administrative drive, not evidence of a permanent home-visit service or a current promise that an official will visit every pensioner.

For a current stoppage, rely on the submission channels presently listed by EPFO and preserve your own acknowledgement. If you need help, use the pension-status enquiry, EPFO’s official help route or a Nidhi Aapke Nikat camp rather than waiting for a historical initiative to return.

Evidence checklist for an EPFO follow-up

  • PPO number and pensioner’s full name
  • Date and route of the latest life-certificate submission
  • Jeevan Pramaan SMS, Pramaan ID or service receipt
  • Name of the pension-disbursing bank or agency
  • Month in which the pension stopped
  • Screenshot, printout or notes from the Pensioners’ Portal enquiry
  • Details of any earlier complaint, camp visit or bank conversation

With that record, ask EPFO to verify the certificate-to-PPO match, confirm reactivation, and explain the treatment of missed payments. Those are case-specific decisions; the published guidance does not supply a universal turnaround or arrears guarantee.
