After the records are restored, test both forward and reverse resolution before diagnosing a particular client.
Why an ENS name can stop resolving after an upgrade
An ENS name does not contain its address, avatar, text records, or other data by itself. Applications ask the resolver contract assigned to that name for those records. The resolver address stored for the name is therefore the source of truth: reads should go to that contract, and authorized writes must target it as well.

ENSv2 migration can change that contract. A name that previously used a known Public Resolver may now point to PublicResolverV2. The migration can also leave the earlier resolver cleared or provide a resolver in the migration data. Changing the resolver does not automatically guarantee that every address, text, avatar, content-hash, or other record has been copied. A name can therefore appear registered while returning empty or incorrect records.
There is a second, independent failure mode. A wallet or dapp may still query the resolver address hard-coded in an older integration, assume that every name shares one resolver, use an ENS library from before ENSv2, select a different chain, or retain cached resolver data. In that situation, the protocol state can be correct while one application reports that the name is unresolved.

How ENS resolution is supposed to work

Reverse resolution alone is not proof that a wallet or dapp should display a name. The forward check prevents a stale, mismatched, or otherwise unverified reverse record from being presented as the address’s primary name.
Before you change anything
- Have access to the account that manages the ENS name. A read-only wallet connection cannot authorize resolver or record updates.
- Identify the chain where the name and its records are registered. Write down the chain before making changes; querying another network can produce an unresolved result even when the name is healthy elsewhere.
- Use ENS Manager, the official interface for names using a supported Public Resolver, or another ENS-aware lookup that can display the resolver assigned to the name.
- Prepare the records you actually need to restore: an address record, text records, avatar, content-hash, and any other application-specific entries.
- Keep the wallet’s seed phrase and private keys private. Support staff should never need either one.
Step-by-step repair
1. Select the correct network and managing account
- Connect the account that controls the name.
- Select the chain on which the name and its records are registered.
- Confirm that the ENS interface is reading that same chain before you interpret an empty result as data loss.
If the account or network is wrong, stop here and correct the connection. Do not submit resolver transactions until the interface shows the intended name on the correct chain.
2. Read the resolver actually assigned to the name
Open the name in ENS Manager and inspect its current resolver address. An ENS-aware lookup can provide a second reading. The address shown there is the contract applications must query and the contract authorized record writes must target.

Do not substitute a resolver address copied from an old integration, a wallet configuration, or an earlier support article. A cached address can produce both stale reads and failed or misdirected writes even when the name’s on-chain assignment has changed.
3. Determine what the migration changed
Compare the resolver now displayed with the resolver your previous setup expected.

ENSv2 migration can supply a resolver in migration data for some names. Treat the resolver displayed for this particular name as authoritative instead of assuming that all migrated names share one address.

4. Restore records in the current resolver
In ENS Manager, open the record editor for the name and select the resolver that is actually assigned. Copy or recreate the records your applications require, such as:

- the primary address record used for payments or identity;
- text records consumed by wallets, websites, or profiles;
- an avatar record;
- a content-hash record;
- any additional records that were present before the upgrade.
If your migration process provides a supported write path instead of direct editing, use that path. The important distinction is the destination: each write must be authorized against the resolver currently assigned to the name. A transaction sent to the old resolver will not repair reads from the new one.
5. Wait for and verify each on-chain transaction
- Submit the record update from the managing account.
- Wait for the transaction to be confirmed.
- Reopen the name and verify that the resolver and records shown by ENS Manager reflect the confirmed state.
Do not rely on a wallet notification that a transaction was submitted. Retest only after confirmation and after the interface has re-read the chain.

6. Test forward resolution in two independent clients
Resolve the name to its expected address and records in ENS Manager, then repeat the lookup in an independent ENS-aware client. Compare the chain selected, resolver address, returned address, and records.
- If both clients return the expected values, the on-chain repair is working.
- If ENS Manager works but another client fails, the discrepancy is probably in that client’s network selection, ENS library, resolver discovery, or cache.
- If both clients fail, return to the resolver assignment and record transaction. The name may still point to the wrong contract or the records may not have been written there.
7. Test reverse resolution and primary-name display
- Ask the wallet or ENS-aware client for the name associated with the address.
- Record the name returned by that reverse lookup.
- Forward-resolve the returned name.
- Accept it as the address’s primary name only if the forward result is the same address you started with.
This check matters when a wallet displays a name beside an address. A reverse record can exist while pointing to a name that no longer resolves to that address.

8. Isolate a client-specific failure
When independent lookups agree but one wallet or dapp still shows an unresolved name, check the client rather than submitting more blockchain transactions.

- Confirm that the wallet or dapp is connected to the same chain used in ENS Manager.
- Check whether its ENS library predates ENSv2.
- Look for integrations that assume one shared resolver address instead of discovering the resolver assigned to each name.
- Refresh or clear the application’s cached resolver data, then repeat the lookup.
An older library or fixed resolver assumption can fail independently of the name’s protocol state. Updating the client or its ENS integration may be necessary, but changing a correctly configured name will not solve that software defect.

When not to migrate or rewrite records again
Do not replace a resolver merely because a single wallet cannot display the name. First establish whether ENS Manager and an independent ENS-aware client agree on the on-chain state. If they do, repeated resolver changes can create a second problem by moving records away from the resolver applications should be querying.
Likewise, do not treat a reverse-name display issue as proof that forward records are missing. Reverse and forward resolution are separate lookups; validate them in their respective directions and require the reverse-to-forward address match before changing records.
What to collect before contacting support
If the name still fails across independent clients after the resolver and records have been checked, provide evidence that lets support distinguish protocol state from client state:
- the chain being queried;
- the ENS name;
- the resolver address currently assigned to that name;
- the transaction hash for the resolver or record update;
- the affected wallet or dapp and what it displays;
- the result from at least one independent ENS-aware lookup.
Never include a seed phrase, private key, wallet recovery file, or signing approval in a support request. Those secrets are not required to diagnose an ENS resolution problem.
