A failed UPI payment normally returns any amount debited from the payer. A pending payment is still being processed, so do not send it again until the status is resolved. For a UPI funds transfer in which the payer is debited but the beneficiary is not credited, the beneficiary bank should auto-reverse the transaction by T+1. For a merchant payment with no confirmation, the auto-reversal deadline is T+5 days, with ₹100 per day compensation for a delay beyond that period. Save the transaction evidence, use the UPI app’s complaint flow, contact the relevant bank, and escalate through NPCI and the RBI Ombudsman process when the required waiting period has passed.
What each UPI status means
The label in your UPI app determines what you should do next. A status can change after the payment screen closes, so open the transaction history and read the latest status attached to the transaction ID or RRN.

Failed
NPCI describes a failed transaction as one caused by a technical issue at the payer’s or receiver’s end. The payment attempt did not complete. If your account was debited, NPCI’s UPI FAQ says, “In case of failures money will be refunded back to your account.” Check the account statement for the reversal rather than assuming that a failed label means the money has already returned.

Pending
NPCI’s UPI Help Guidelines explain that when an amount is stuck in the payment process at your end or the receiver’s end, the transaction goes into a pending state. Pending means there is no final confirmation yet; it is not the same as a completed payment or a final failure. The beneficiary bank may still be settling the transaction. Refresh the transaction history and wait for the status to update. Do not make a second payment while the first attempt remains unresolved.

Reversed or refunded
A reversed or refunded entry means the debit has been returned or is being posted back to the payer’s account. Match the reversal amount with the original debit and check the posting date in your bank statement. If the applicable RBI deadline has passed and the credit is missing, treat it as an unresolved complaint rather than retrying the payment.
Successful but the receiver says nothing arrived
First compare the transaction ID, amount, date and beneficiary details with the receiver’s bank statement. A notification can be delayed, while the account credit may already be present. If the beneficiary account is not credited, the payer’s bank and the beneficiary’s bank must trace the transaction using the UPI transaction ID or RRN.
What to do immediately after a failed, pending, or reversed payment
- Stop duplicate attempts. Do not send the same amount again when the original transaction is pending or when the debit has not been reconciled.
- Open transaction history. Use the UPI app’s history or your bank statement, not only the payment pop-up, to see the current status.
- Record the evidence. Save the UPI transaction ID or RRN, date, time, amount, payer and beneficiary details, status text, and screenshots. NPCI’s complaint process uses these transaction details and a complaint reference number.
- Check both accounts. Confirm whether the payer was debited and whether the beneficiary was credited. These two facts determine whether you are dealing with a failed debit, a transfer that needs reversal, or a merchant-confirmation problem.
- Note the transaction type. A person-to-person or account funds transfer follows a different reversal window from a payment to a merchant.
Why did my UPI payment fail?
A failure indicates a technical problem at the payer’s or receiver’s side, according to NPCI’s UPI Help Guidelines. The app may display a generic message even when the underlying issue is at the bank, payment-service-provider, network or beneficiary side. The useful question is not only “why did it fail?” but also “was my account debited, and was the beneficiary credited?”
- No debit and no credit: The attempt failed without a completed transfer. You can try again later after confirming that the app and bank are operating normally.
- Debit but no beneficiary credit: Keep the transaction evidence and apply the transfer reversal window described below. Do not send a duplicate while the first transaction is unresolved.
- Debit followed by a reversal: The transaction has been unwound. Confirm the returned amount in the account statement before initiating a new payment.
- Merchant debit without confirmation: Keep the receipt or order reference and use the merchant-payment deadline, which is different from a person-to-person transfer.
NPCI’s public wording is deliberately broad: “The transaction gets failed when there is some technical issue at your or receiver’s end.” Your bank or UPI app may show a more specific internal reason, but that message does not change the need to reconcile the debit and credit entries.
How long does a UPI payment stay pending?
There is no single universal clock for every pending transaction in the app. NPCI says a pending transaction may take time while the beneficiary bank settles it. Refresh the transaction history periodically and wait for a final success, failure or reversal status. The safest rule is to keep the original transaction open until the bank confirms its final outcome.

A pending status is not permission to retry. A second attempt can create two successful debits if the first transaction later completes. If you need to pay urgently, ask the beneficiary whether the original amount has arrived and use a different payment method only after you understand the risk of a duplicate. Keep both transaction references if you make any additional payment.
UPI reversal deadlines: T+1 versus T+5 days
RBI uses T to mean the transaction date. The deadline depends on whether the payment was a funds transfer or a merchant payment.
Recommended Free Tools
| Situation | RBI outcome and deadline | What you should retain |
|---|---|---|
| UPI funds transfer: payer debited, beneficiary not credited | The beneficiary bank should auto-reverse the transaction by T+1 if it cannot complete the credit. | UPI transaction ID or RRN, debit entry, beneficiary details and the date of the transaction. |
| Merchant payment: payer debited, confirmation not received | Auto-reversal is due within T+5 days. A delay beyond T+5 attracts ₹100 per day compensation under RBI’s framework. | Transaction ID or RRN, debit entry, merchant or order reference, confirmation screen and complaint references. |
These are different rules. Do not apply the merchant-payment T+5 window to a person-to-person transfer, or assume that a merchant payment must reverse by T+1. If the relevant deadline expires without a reversal, raise or update a complaint with the bank and keep the complaint reference number.
Step-by-step: fix a UPI payment that failed, reversed, or is pending
Step 1: Save a complete transaction record
Write down the UPI transaction ID or RRN exactly as shown. Also record the transaction date and time, amount, payer’s bank account or UPI ID, beneficiary’s UPI ID or account details, merchant name if applicable, and the exact status message. Take screenshots showing the status and the transaction details. Do not edit the screenshots or obscure the reference number needed by support.
Step 2: Establish the debit and credit facts
Look at the payer’s bank statement or account balance and ask the beneficiary to check the actual bank statement, not just a notification. Mark the result in a simple record:

- payer debited: yes or no;
- beneficiary credited: yes or no;
- merchant confirmation received: yes or no;
- current app status: failed, pending, reversed, refunded or successful.
This prevents support teams from investigating the wrong leg of the transaction.
Step 3: Apply the correct waiting rule
For a funds transfer where the beneficiary was not credited, allow the beneficiary bank’s auto-reversal process through T+1. For a merchant payment where confirmation was not received, use the T+5-day auto-reversal rule. The count starts with T, the transaction date, as defined by RBI.
Step 4: Check for the reversal entry
Search the payer’s account statement for a credit matching the original amount. The posting may appear as a reversal, refund or a bank-generated adjustment. Compare the amount and reference to the original debit. If the credit is partial, missing or unrelated to the original transaction, report that discrepancy rather than closing the complaint.
Step 5: Raise the in-app complaint
Open the transaction in the official UPI app and choose its transaction-help, dispute or complaint option. Select the closest issue, such as failed payment, debit but beneficiary not credited, pending transaction or merchant payment not confirmed. Enter the transaction ID or RRN and upload the saved evidence if the app requests it. Record the complaint reference number and the date submitted.
Step 6: Contact the banks that control the accounts
Contact the remitter or payer’s account-holding bank about the debit and reversal. If the beneficiary was not credited, the beneficiary’s bank may need to trace the incoming leg. Give each support team the same transaction ID or RRN and explain the debit/credit result in one sentence. Ask for a written or recorded complaint reference, the expected resolution date and the team responsible for the next update.

Step 7: Use NPCI’s complaint process if the issue remains unresolved
After using the app’s support route, submit the matter through NPCI’s UPI complaint process when appropriate. Include the transaction details and every earlier complaint reference. Keep the submission confirmation and do not open multiple conflicting complaints for the same transaction unless the support channel instructs you to do so.
Step 8: Escalate to the RBI Ombudsman process when eligible
First complain to the regulated entity involved, such as the relevant bank or payment-service provider. Under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2026, you can use the cost-free Ombudsman process when the regulated entity has not replied within 30 days or when its response does not resolve the complaint. Submit the original transaction evidence, the regulated entity’s complaint reference, the date of your complaint, and the response or proof that no response was received.
Which support channel should you use?
| Channel | Best use | What it can establish | Information to provide |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPI app transaction help | First report for a specific payment | Current status, in-app dispute record and initial routing | Transaction ID or RRN, amount, date, status and screenshots |
| Remitter or payer bank | Debit, reversal and account-credit questions | Whether the payer’s account was debited, reversed or adjusted | Account statement entry, transaction ID or RRN and complaint reference |
| Beneficiary bank | Receiver not credited after a transfer | Whether the incoming credit reached or was rejected by the beneficiary account | Beneficiary details, transaction ID or RRN and transaction date |
| NPCI complaint process | Scheme-level tracking after the app and bank routes | UPI complaint registration and reference tracking | Transaction details plus earlier complaint references |
| RBI Ombudsman process | Independent escalation after the regulated entity’s response period | Cost-free review when there is no reply within 30 days or the reply is unsatisfactory | Complete chronology, regulated-entity reference and supporting records |
What if money was debited but the receiver did not get it?
Do not pay again immediately. Confirm with the receiver that the account statement shows no credit, then identify whether the payment was a funds transfer or a merchant payment. Record the debit and wait through the applicable deadline in the T+1 versus T+5 table. If the money has not reversed by that deadline, complain to the payer’s bank and ask the beneficiary’s bank to trace the credit using the same transaction ID or RRN.
If the receiver later gets the money after you have started a complaint, update every open complaint and keep proof of the final credit. If you made a second payment because the first remained unresolved, tell support that both transactions may relate to the same obligation; do not assume the bank will automatically identify a duplicate without both references.

Check the account statement for a separate credit rather than relying on the app’s failed label. Capture the failed status, original debit and any later entries. Raise the issue through the app and then with the payer’s bank, quoting the transaction ID or RRN. Ask the bank to confirm whether a reversal has been initiated, the expected posting date and the complaint reference. If the applicable RBI reversal window has passed, include that fact in the escalation and retain the reference for the next level.

What if a merchant says payment was not received?
Compare the merchant’s order or receipt number with the UPI transaction details. A merchant may not receive an immediate confirmation even when the debit is visible. Ask the merchant to check its settlement records, but do not treat a merchant’s verbal statement as proof that the bank debit has failed. If no confirmation arrives, use the merchant-payment T+5-day rule and the ₹100-per-day compensation rule for delay beyond T+5. Keep the order reference, the UPI transaction ID or RRN, the debit statement and all support responses.
How to avoid duplicate debits and common mistakes
- Retrying a pending payment: This is the most consequential mistake because the original payment may later succeed.
- Using only a screenshot: A screenshot does not prove the final account posting. Check the bank statement and save the transaction reference.
- Calling only the app: The app can open the dispute, but the account-holding bank controls the debit and reversal ledger. Use both routes when the debit is unresolved.
- Reporting without the RRN: A complaint lacking the transaction identifier can take longer to route. Copy it exactly.
- Ignoring the transaction type: Funds transfers and merchant payments have different RBI deadlines.
- Closing a complaint after a verbal assurance: Keep the complaint reference until the account statement shows the reversal or the beneficiary confirms the final credit.
- Sharing security credentials: Support does not need your UPI PIN, one-time password, card PIN or full login password to trace a transaction.
How to document the case for a faster resolution
Create one chronological record for each disputed payment. Start with the transaction date and time, then list the app status, debit posting, beneficiary or merchant response, each support contact and each reference number. Attach unedited screenshots and statements that show the relevant entries. Use the same description in every escalation so that NPCI, the bank and the Ombudsman process are reviewing one consistent set of facts.
Separate facts from assumptions. “Payer account debited at 14:03; beneficiary statement shows no credit at 14:20” is more useful than “the network stole the money.” If a status changes, add the time of the change and preserve the earlier status. This record also helps demonstrate when the 30-day period for an Ombudsman complaint began.
When to escalate and when to wait
- Wait and monitor: The transaction is pending, no final debit/credit outcome is known, and the applicable reversal window has not expired.
- Contact the bank promptly: The payer was debited, the beneficiary was not credited, or a failed transaction has no matching reversal entry.
- Use NPCI’s process: The app and bank routes have not resolved the transaction, or you need scheme-level complaint tracking.
- Use the RBI Ombudsman process: The regulated entity has not replied within 30 days, or its response is unsatisfactory. The process is cost-free under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2026.
Safety checks during a payment dispute
Use only the support options inside your official UPI app, your bank’s verified website or statement, and NPCI or RBI’s official complaint channels. Never approve a collect request or scan a QR code merely to receive a refund. Receiving money does not require entering your UPI PIN; entering the PIN authorizes a debit. Do not disclose your UPI PIN, one-time password, card PIN or banking password to anyone claiming to be an agent.
Sources and scope
The status definitions and refund wording in this guide come from NPCI’s UPI FAQ and UPI Help Guidelines. The T+1 transfer rule, T+5 merchant-payment rule and ₹100-per-day compensation for delay beyond T+5 come from RBI’s failed-transaction framework. The 30-day escalation route is based on the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2026. Bank-specific menus, contact numbers, posting times and app behavior vary by provider, so use the labels and support details shown by your own bank and UPI app.
